I had a recipe that required ahi tuna, so I stopped into Moby Ricks - finally. This was my first time not just at this location but...ever. The guys there were very friendly and helpful. I decided last minute that I was going to take home a bunch of shucked oysters with my tuna. Score! They shucked them right there (you also have the option to take them home and do it yourself). The oysters were delicious-even though they forgot one. I was sad. Honest mistake, I guess. The ahi tuna was great-I made it in 2 different ways-tartare with spicy mayo and seared. Delicious. Really fresh seafood and I like the new (ish) location. Very spacious with a counter for coffee and takeout. I spied beer taps and there might be plans for getting those up and running at some point. They are now finally settled into their new location at 26A Congress Street. This is the former location of the R.S. Taylor & Sons Taproom. Moby Rick's kitchen is not ready yet so they don't have the ability to prepare any of the fish at this location. They are hoping to have the kitchen completed by Summer. For cooked fish you'll currently have to go to their Clifton Park location (which currently is only providing takeout during the COVID-19 restrictions). Since we were in Saratoga we decided to check out their new location and bring something home to cook for dinner. There was a lot of fresh fish to choose from and we narrowed it down to either halibut or sea bass. I decided on the sea bass because we've never cooked it at home before. It was about $35/lb., which is a fair price. My wife prepared it with some white wine, butter and shallots and it was absolutely delicious. The fish was so fresh and tasty. read more

Stopped by to pick up some fresh seafood. Everything looked fresh and the serve was wonderful. The guy behind the counter was so helpful and gave some great suggestions. I picked up fresh shrimp, scallops, halibut and tuna. I made fabulous salad with the scallops and a shrimp pasta with the shrimp. I was talking to the guy (forgot his name) while he helped me, I told him that I love catfish. He told me they get catfish. Before I left he took my information so he can contact me when he gets it. Sadly I have a regular customer and after my last few visits I am extremely disappointed. I have been overcharged on two occasions, received the wrong amount of fish and today received the worst piece of salmon with gashes mostly end. Went there for take-out today and tried two "lunches"... lobster roll and mussels in coconut milk. The lobster roll (see my pic) was warm, full of big lobster chunks, and well seasoned as opposed to the other one I had (at a well-regarded place in Boston) which was heavy on the mayo and add-ins to increase the bulk. The mussels are reputedly the same as served at the late lamented Tiznow's... several didn't open but the sauce was so delicious I am willing to forgive anything. These come with a side, either fries or a salad. I chose salad and got specimen cups of Asian slaw and beet salad, both fine. The lunch also comes with house made pickles which were also fine; apparently in contrast to the menu these are only supposed to be served with sandwiches but the server cut me a break. During the few quick minutes I was waiting I perused the tubs of fish available. Maybe 30 varieties and fairly priced, to say the least. We have been buying from Rick at the farmer's market and rarely a misfire. They will also sell and shuck oysters for you at a buck apiece currently. Nothing wrong with that. Since this place is 3 blocks from my house, my personal star rating is through the roof. Any time I crave incredibly fresh seafood, or an appetizer of a dozen oysters on the half shell, I snap my fingers and it is done. But it's well worth four stars for the freshness, quality and value even if you drive some distance to get here. Minuses: this is in the bleak old Pepper's space which feels like a general store in the deep south. No seating if you want to enjoy your meal on the premises. But maybe that's how Rick keeps his prices in line. UPDATE: as of 10/24/12, the price of a shucked oyster has increased to $1.50. And so it goes.... Today I tried the ceviche and it did not impress... routine cuts of fish in bland seasoning. But there was some interesting marinated tuna and a fellow patron told me it was delicious. read more

Whenever I'm in Saratoga, I always Yelp "Seafood" to see if there's any new seafood restaurants or stores which have just opened, especially after having been disappointed at the seafood section at the otherwise great Healthy Living Market and Cafe. So I was quite excited to discover Moby Rick's and read good reviews. I've always purchased my seafood from the frozen food department or the seafood section of a supermarket. So the higher price was new to me, but then again, so was the quality. We didn't check out the fish and other items in the frozen display. While the tuna, scallops, salmon, char, etc., all looked great, we opted for something a bit less expensive this first time, the red perch. Even though that was still more than I'm used to paying in a grocery store (it was $13.95 a pound), two 4-oz. fillets for about $8.00 was find for dinner, and you can't beat the taste of fresh fish. Unfortunately, as has been noted in some other reviews, there were a small number of very small bones left in my fillet. Even so, it's nice to have this as an option. read more

Excellent seafood! This is a takeout store only though. Owned by a guy who's family are ocean fisherman down in Long Island which provides some of the awesome catches he sells. You can buy the fresh fish, which are all on display in the frozen display cases at the counter, to bring home and cook yourself or they will cook it for you there in the back. They have 3 kinds of chowder available too, my favorite is the Gentleman's Chowder which is a cross between New England Clam and Manhattan Clam Chowder.....Mmmmmm very good! For lunch today, I had the fish and chips dinner, which was outstanding. It didn't come on a roll though which surprised me but it was still excellent. The "chips" are homemade french fries which were also great. The dinner came with a nice serving of coleslaw as well and I very much enjoyed it too. The slaw was on the sweeter side like I prefer and not at all spicy hot like some others enjoy. Also got a small container of the Chowder and an ice tea. Lunch came to $20 which seemed a little high for takeout for 1 but well worth it as I enjoyed every bite of everything I had. Other customers in line ahead of me were all raving about the crab cakes too but I will have to try those another day. Service by the owner was excellent....friendly and personal. I expect I'll be a regular here, especially for the next month of Fridays during Lent.....and whenever I'm in the mood for great seafood after that. read more

I have been going to Moby Rick's Seafood Store for the past couple of years. I really like their new location. The store is very, very big and very, very clean! Anyway, I went there yesterday at their new location and was blown away by the size and the variety of seafood. The staff is super friendly and even helped me pick out some Oysters. They even opened them up for me and put them inside a plastic container with ice which I returned to them today. I'm glad I had Greg open the shells for me. He was having a little of a hard time himself doing it and I told him that if I was doing it, I would be at the Saratoga Emergency room now! Honestly, if you really love seafood and want the best of freshness, this is the place to go! Thanks guys! read more

Full disclosure: I had a LivingSocial, but I spent above it because the place was so good!! It was so nice walking in and seeing a really fresh seafood market. I have been buying mine from not the best sources (read: grocery stores) so it was lovely to have discovered a wonderful alternative. It smelt really fresh and ocean-y in there, but not fishy, which is great. Onto the food, I got the half dozen of shucked oysters, which were perfect size, amazingly fresh, I could have ate them forever. I also got the baked haddock with a side of bok choy and mashed potatoes. The haddock was really good and the portion was huge! I literally made three meals out of one. The sides were very good as well, especially the mashed potatoes. I also bought a container of sea scallops that I plan on using this week (haven't decided on how yet, but I know it will be delicious!) My only qualm about the whole thing is that since they do offer cooked food, they should have at least one or two small tables inside. There was definitely room by the window. Since it was the last day of November I don't know if they put tables outside or not in the warmer months, but they definitely should. It would also be nice to have a place to sit while waiting to pick up an order (though you can always call ahead). All of the employees were very kind and I had some nice conversations while I was waiting for my food. In all, would definitely recommend, and I will be back again. read more

Malapeques from PEI and Plymouth MA oysters...much better. Long Island sound is OK for fresh fish (they have the striped bass and even bluefish here...). great seafood selection, fantastic fish and chips and fish, shrimp, and chips. The shrimp was a coconutty breading with Thai sweet chili sauce and tasted fresh. The guys are so welcoming and really appreciate the patronage during covid. Their local artist friend apparently made their mural/menu recently and it's gorgeous and so fitting! Had I looked before leaving the store, would have refused it. Called to complain, said no problem we'll run a credit to your credit card. 3 more calls over 4 days got the same "no problem" reply. After selling fresh seafood at the Saratoga Springs Farmers Market for the past year and a half, Rick Lofstad sensed a great business opportunity. Saratoga had an appetite for his (relatively) local fish from the long island sound so he decided to open a retail space in the recently vacated Peppers Market space on Lake Avenue. At the new store Rick is selling his lovely fresh seafood that he catches. He will also sell seafood that doesn't meet the criteria for the farmers market (of being local or caught by his boats, but is nonetheless yummy.) He regularly has a wide variety of seafood,. from sole and sand shark to cod, monkfish, squid, clams, blowfish, and scup as well as clams and mussels. In the store he is also selling prepared food and meals for take out. On the first day he had several nice selections including some sort of fried fish and a lobster risotto. I bought some ready made crab cakes and blowfish. I'd had a very busy day and both are easy and quick to prepare. (btw blowfish are succulent and tasty and easily prepared by sauteing in butter for about 5-6 min). The crab cakes were very tasty and generous in size. I weighed them when I got home and their weight was exactly 1/2 lb, so at $3 each, they were a good value. Both were very tasty. The store is so new that they are still putting on finishing touches. Their selection was quite good but I expect it to continue to expand. While Rick is a fisherman, a former chef from Tiznow appears to be on board and is responsible for the prepared food. I understand this is the only real seafood market in Saratoga; however, that doesn't explain the: exorbitant prices, mediocre service, and inexplicable pieces in my Mediterranean salad. I really was excited to try this place. I grew up clamming and fishing off of Long Island. I LOVE any and all kinds of seafood. Other than the odd Mediterranean salad pieces; the shrimp, crab and scallops were excellent. My husband I walked in and weren't acknowledged. The one worker was filling a bag for a customer but could have said, "Hi," or, "Welcome," or anything! Instead, he stared for a bit then got back to work. Odd. A middle-aged man eventually came from the back and asked, "What do you need?" That's just the customer service part. Honestly, I don't expect anyone to roll out the red carpet as Her Royal Highness appears but customer service is an important part of, well, customer service. Best fresh fish in the 518. The fish is brought in from the Hamptons and is comparable to what you would find in the NYC restaurants. I do not do the precooked fish so I can't comment on that. However, their fresh salmon, swordfish and monkfish is the best texture and taste in the area. Their oysters are comparable to a restaurant quality as are the clams and mussels. Love picking up cooked fish here. Mony Rick's is a good addition to Saratoga. I like the rustic look of the shop. A bit of constructive criticism: Ginny's review is right about the fillets...sometimes you get a good piece with no bones, other times you get lots of bones. One of the newer young men working in the store needs training and/or an attitude adjustment. His phone answering/order taking isn't up to the task and he isn't any better in person. All it takes is a less than stellar experience and people can get turned off which takes a good viable business and sends it in a downard spiral, so I wanted to share that. For three: The selection is very limited, you could find the same things in your local hannaford or price chopper, so many other places in town you could go for a better selection and better prices. Moby Rick's new location at 26A Congress St is definitely an upgrade from their previous location but I hope they will continue to transform the space to reflect the homely personality from their past location, with old photographs and news clippings or maybe a themed mural on the chalkboard walls? The fresh seafood at Moby Ricks never disappoints and the staff is super friendly and wonderfully helpful. The staff is attentive to every customer and readily answers any questions regarding the expansive selection of seafood in their cases. I frequently left with more than I intended to buy because there was always something new I wanted to try. This is the freshest seafood I have found and I was a weekly customer while I was in the area. I stopped in after taking a wrong turn in Saratoga Springs. Glad i stumbled upon it. It's a small fish shack with lots of fresh fish (organic salmon, mahi mahi, tuna steaks, shrimp, crab legs, etc) as well as frozen stuff (lump crab meat, crab cakes, etc). I wound up ordering a lobster roll with potato salad. It was so good....big chunks of lobster, seasoned perfectly only to be complimented by an awesome potato salad.
