Before booking, we were very clear that we were relatively new divers and had never done a drift dive. We specifically expressed that we wanted to feel safe and properly supported. We were assured it would be fine, but once we were in the water, the support simply wasn't there. There was very little help with weights at the start. I quickly realized I was underweighted and had to go back and get more, which immediately separated me from the group. From there, things only got worse. I ended up alone on the reef during a drift -- something that should never happen -- and ultimately had to surface solo and wait for the boat by myself. To make matters worse, my surface marker/flag device wouldn't inflate properly, and I had to be picked up alone. At no point did I feel like anyone from the team was proactively ensuring I was safe or accounted for. Afterward, the only response I received was essentially, "Sorry you had a bad experience." That was the extent of the support. The diving itself may be beautiful, but the staff's lack of attentiveness and concern for client safety and experience was deeply disappointing. When newer divers communicate nervousness and inexperience with drift diving, that should be taken seriously -- not brushed aside. This wasn't about conditions or bad luck. It was about a lack of care and leadership. I would not recommend this operation to newer divers, and I left feeling unsettled rather than excited about the dive.

Our group, the Clemson Scuba Club, booked a Spring Break trip with Black Flag Charters. As happens in diving, weather resulted in several dives being canceled. We didn't think much of it at the time, but several other dive companies were still going out those very same days, and it could have been divable conditions, but we acted in favor of what we thought was safety. We completely understood that safety comes first and had no issue with the cancellations themselves. The problem began afterward. Black Flag acknowledged that our organization was owed a refund totaling $3,072.33 for the canceled portions of the trip. Unfortunately, despite months of emails, text messages, phone calls, and payment requests, we have still not received the agreed refund. The amount of $3,072.33 is remarkably low to begin with, as we only got to dive 1 of the 6 dives we charted and paid for, but were being given back not even half of what we paid, and then the owner Anthony Falzon made up some bogus reason about paying his staff (who didn't end up doing their job, since we never even went to the marina???) and the equipment being rented from yet another company. Throughout this process, we made every effort to resolve the matter privately. We gave the company multiple opportunities over several months to make good on its commitment before pursuing any formal action. We were patient, remained professional, and consistently communicated our only goal: receiving the refund that had already been acknowledged. Instead, we were met with repeated delays and long periods of little or no communication while our student organization remained responsible for refunding members who had paid for services that were ultimately not provided. It has become clear at this point, after Black Flag has taken down their website, that they are trying to just turn tail and run away with thousands of college kids' money. We have been in contact with the BBB, West Palm Beach attorneys, and the small claims court of West Palm Beach. As president of the Clemson Scuba Club, this has been incredibly frustrating because these funds belong to our members, many of whom are college students. We have documented our communications and have now begun pursuing formal avenues to recover the money after exhausting every reasonable attempt to resolve the issue directly. We have proof of PDF's and emails that they sent us showing that they agreed to pay us $3,072.33, but yet have not I cannot emphasize enough that I cannot recommend doing business with a company that acknowledges a refund is owed yet, in our experience, does not follow through with payment despite months of good-faith efforts to resolve the matter. I genuinely hope they choose to make this right. Not only for us, but if they have any desire of doing business again, then for future customers as well.

Drove an hour to have them no-call-no-show. Disrespectful. Waste of time. Lost a full day of diving.read more

On a dive in July 2022, I accidentally forgot to take my safety marker into the water, and my dive buddy (who also forgot his marker) and I surfaced about a half mile from the boat. We were spearfishing, and 3 sharks were circling, and another boat came by. We were not given instruction prior to this dive on what to do in a situation like this, so we climbed on the other boat and asked them to take us back to the charter. When Sandy realized what happened, she absolutely went ballistic, saying "get off that ****ing boat right now. Get your *** back over here" and several other things. When I got back on the dive boat, I apologized and basically just let her keep on yelling at us. I have also seen her on many occasions be very harsh and rude to Vicki, who also serves as a captain on the boat, and sometimes is also a Divemaster in the water with us. I guess I am a glutton for punishment, because on September 2, I went on her boat again (my wife, who had witnessed the first fiasco, thought I was crazy). On my second dive, I accidentally forgot my surface marker (again). I couldn't believe I made that mistake again, and I was very upset with myself. I shot a barracuda, intending to eat it, but it turned out it was over 36", so it would not be good to eat. It was still a legal fish (as a trophy), but I shot it with the intent of eating it. When I got back to the dock (Sandy was not on the boat that day), she cursed me out again for forgetting my safety sausage a second time and went on and on. It's not like I didn't feel bad enough already, and because I had my 4 foot speargun, the boat was able to find me with no accident. At the time, I just let rant go. After thinking about it a day or two, I e-mailed Ocean Quest and told her how I was very disappointed with how she behaved and how I didn't think it was ever OK to curse a customer out. I even told her that if she had simply said, "Matt, if you do this again, you can't dive on my boat", I would have been fine. It was after all my mistake, and a potentially very dangerous one that would put myself at risk. However, when she didn't even have the courtesy to respond after a couple of days, I decided it was time to write this review. It appears my review has been removed, so I will keep posting it until I receive a simple apology, as I want others to be aware. I have at least 4 dive buddies who likely will not use her again after this latest incident.

Our captains don't just drive the boat! They dive too on a regular basis, and this is why nobody knows the reefs better then us!!

There was some heavy swell.... maybe even 6' seas. Made the trip out a little rougher than usual... and getting back on the boat can be difficult if you are not used to it. The boat crew all did their jobs wonderfully, and kept everyone safe. Several divers decided they did not want to make the second dive... and since we were close in, the captain actually went in and dropped those divers off (that is good service) and then took the rest of us back out for another dive. Sites were nice, Captain and crew know the area, and put an emphasis on safety and fun diving. I will definitely dive with them again...

They took us to beautiful dive spots where we saw sea turtles and thousands of tropical fish. A spectacular experience.
