Let me start by saying that Firecakes on Clark, in Lincoln Park, is so much better than the one on Hubbard, in the Loop. No offense, the reason I say that is because the employees at this Clark location are so friendly and chill. I like that type of service, don't you?? In comparison to Beacons, Stan's, Voodoo's, and Do-Rite's, I would also say that Firecakes is in the top three (3). They are less commercialized, less over the top, and the simplicity in the Tahitian Vanilla epitomizes this type of donut shop. They're a throwback to a classic neighborhood place to come to, for these treats. My favorites, in no particular order are: - Cannoli donut (4) - Birthday cake donut (5) - Apple fritter (2) - Tahitian Vanilla (number 1) - Cinnamon roll (3)...I decided to rank them... Firecakes Donuts has never disappointed me over all the years I've patronized the business. The inside of the donut shop has been adjusted to only accommodate to-go orders. It is a lot more spacious when you go inside as you wait to place your order. The staff is always so friendly and willing to explain any of the seasonal donuts they have in stock. No matter the crowd size they always seem to get the line moving quickly. The donuts are priced like many gourmet donuts so it's not cheap and can add up if you start to buy multiples. The donuts are definitely worth the cost. When in doubt I always get either the Tahitian Vanilla Iced or Valrhona Chocolate Iced because those are always consistently good. They're completely different vibes but either donuts will help with your chocolate or vanilla fix. Both are very flavorful and balance each other out if you opt to get them both. read more

They do not have a dining area, but they do have a covered patio area on the side of the shop. They offer more than just donuts. You can get stuffed cookies, ice cream, coffee and tea. They had me at stuffed cookies. They have an exotic assortment of donuts. They have both yeast and cake. I went with a pistachio, a wildflower honey glazed and a PB &J. I also got a stuffed sprinkle cookie. They were soft, fluffy and very savory. I was very happy with my choices. The guy that was working the counter during my visit was very friendly, patient and helpful. The baked goods are pricey, but so delicious. They stored pretty good and were tasty even the next day. Location is right on the busy street by other bakery and sweet spots. There was no line when we walked in. Lady in front was really friendly and helped out when asked what certain flavors were. I ordered an iced chai tea and it had the right amount of chai and sweetness to it. Also got the sprinkled donut. The base, the actual donut is really good not too overpowering on the sweetness. Saw Firecakes pretty high on a "best cinnamon roll" list, so I had to stop by! The cinnamon roll did not disappoint! My only preference is that the icing is more cream cheese-forward, but their airy roll and sweet icing was still amazing! Also enjoyed how evenly it was baked, rather than having a crispy outside and gooey middle. I also love that they have creative seasonal flavors! I've been a regular, almost weekly, customer at firecakes for over a year. Great yeast donuts and always fun seasonal flavors. But after the last 2 experiences at this location, I will not be going back for awhile, nor will I be recommending it to friends who ask me about donut recs, as I get donuts all the time and am somewhat known for it. A few weeks ago the girl helping me didn't say hello, didn't say "have a nice day" and was just plain rude. I emailed the customer service email about it, as it was an off encounter, to let them know about it. He responded back and appreciated me letting him know. Well, when I went today, I asked about the lack of the seasonal donuts they had just put on their instagram. I usually get 2 donuts and they only had 1 of the 4-5 flavors they had advertised. One of the girls working, who I'm pretty sure was the same girl that was rude to me before, gave me the biggest sass when I asked about it. Basically told me that it was my fault for coming so late in the day (it was 12pm) and WOW, that encounter ruined my day. I'm sorry, but that is not how you treat and talk to a customer. I don't even know where to begin but there sure is a wonderful variety to pick from. I did an online order for Firecakes. They have a pick up window on the side. I've been wanting to try one their donut ice cream sandwiches but just ordered two donuts instead. They had a lot of good options, and perhaps should order a dozen next time but I decided just to stick to their Churro donut and their buttermilk old fashioned. The churro tasted just like a churro but in donut form. A great option for this donut would be to make a filling version of this donut and fill it with hazelnut, chocolate or caramel like a lot of churros are. Nonetheless, it was still executed perfectly. Firecakes Donuts: The story of this donut shop begins with the owner's grandfather, who was a baker in the logging camps of northern Wisconsin in the 1930's. He was renowned throughout the region for his unique bread, and after acquiring a round dough cutter, the first "firecakes" were born. Their current secret recipe is based off the original. For my first visit to the shop I went with the "Peanut Butter Cup". It's a yeast bismark filled with whipped Skippy peanut butter mousse. On top is a Valrhona chocolate icing & a candied-peanut sprinkle. I found the doughnut to have a great soft and chewy texture and it was obvious that it was freshly made. I got it because I love peanut butter and the filling did not disappoint, in fact I enjoyed it more than the peanut butter buttercream in my favorite MKE doughnut shop Cranky Al's (Firecakes is more like actual peanut butter, but I like that Cranky Al's has vanilla icing and sprinkles). Doughboy approved, although it makes me kind of sad that there isn't one in MKE since it technically began in WI. *My friend got the "Buttermilk Old Fashioned" and "Tahitian Vanilla" and was nice enough to let me sample them. Wow this place looks WAY bigger on the outside than it actually was inside! The inside is filled with what looks like inventory so no actual seating inside, though they do have a little outdoor seating area. I have been passing this every day as I've been staying locally while in town and decided on my final day to check it out for a midday sweet treat. I prefer cake donuts so stuck to the classic sprinkle donut. It was super soft, the icing perfectly complemented the cake donut so it was sweet, but not overpoweringly so. You can almost feel the sugar The valrhona chocolate was moist which is usually not true in a chocolate donut especially 15 mins before close. The Orange poppyseed is light not too sweet and crunchy. A better pairing than lemon poppyseed. The apple fritter was ok just the right amount of sugar but a little soggy. Last was the chocolate peppermint, the peppermint balances the chocolate and the marshmallow offset the texture of the donut - I like it. This is my second time having Firecakes and although I'd say they are above average... I just don't think they're super special. CAVAET - Last time I tried the mini lemon filled and the orange glazed old fashioned. I must say for somebody that doesn't really like filled donuts, it may have been the best I've ever had so definitely props on that one but everything I've had since just really hasn't been impressive EXCEPT The rhubarb fritter that I got today. That was definitely delicious and I would come back for a fritter or the mini filled perhaps! But they are both seasonal so they will only be in the stores on a rotation. I'm a glazed old-fashioned girl so I was very excited to see several flavors but I tried the orange previously and the pistachio today and was again kind of disappointed. The texture is good and the glaze is good but the flavors are really lacking. I also was excited to try the vanilla iced but I walked over to the cash register after ordering and didn't realize that the worker actually gave me a chocolate iced and I don't like chocolate, so that was a bummer. I should've paid closer attention. Last but not least was the churro which was a little dry and just tasted like a mediocre sugar cinnamon donut. Overall I'd prob give a 3.5/5 but I'd only come back for an interesting rotational fritter or mini. I'll leave the glazed old fashioned flavors to Stan's. read more

I love this place. Consistently ridiculously good donuts. We come here with some regularity even though it's not close to home because they are that good. Just had their fall donuts: apple spice and sweet potato. Yum. The sweet potato one was definitely something I can't say I had before. Great invention. You can't go wrong. Just get everything. They also usually have 1 or 2 gluten free ones available if you're in the need. And they are tasty as well. My only qualm is this place is uncomfortable inside to eat there. I think the place was originally planned with an indoor seating idea? But never brought that back after COVID? But there are a couple counters and table in there but it seems the staff uses them now for deliveries. So I can't tell if you are allowed to be in there lingering with your purchases or not. (I asked this them and they said yes but I'm not sure every employee would let me). Would be nice to bring back an inviting place to eat inside when the weather isn't kind for the outside seats. But be warned that it might not be the greatest place to meet a friend to chat over a donut and coffee. read more

I'd only ever had their Tahitian vanilla a couple of times and didn't quite feel qualified to review the entire establishment based on just one donut flavor, however pillowy and delicious that donut may be. What did compel me to finally go ahead and write a review was their excellent offerings for Paczki Day 2022. I ordered a Cherry Cheese, Almond Plum and a Blackberry Elderflower. All three were absolutely perfect. The fillings were true to their descriptions but didn't overwhelm the delicate brioche-like dough. The online ordering was simple and they got my order correct (I also ordered paczki from another donut chain and they messed it up so special kudos to Firecakes for quality control!) I will definitely be back for paczkis next year but I will make a point to come back and try some of their offerings too. read more
