I was on a mission for some dank donuts, and Firecakes did not disappoint! Was buying some breakfast to surprise a friend. They open at 6:30am, and I was the first one in. It's a really cute shop, well-kept and neat with a hipster vibe. There's a glass case with some very delectable looking donuts. I went with the pistachio, espresso cream, peanut butter cup, and berry. I highly recommend the espresso cream--that was far and away the superior choice. The coffee flavor of the cream was deep, roasted, and earthy. So dang good. The berry one was also quite good, and it had sugar frosted fresh blueberries on it--nice touch. The donuts are about $3 each. There was a very epic looking birthday cake donut, which looked like two donuts stacked on top of each other and adorned with sprinkles. That looked pretty tasty, but it was $12. Would definitely come back. read more

Firecakes is located on the main Clark St strip, so there's a lot of hustle and bustle and parking is tough! However, we were super pleased to find a beautiful outdoor space to enjoy our donut and coffee! I do think Firecakes' donuts are good, I'm just much more into all of the fancy frills and fillings at other places. Our super plain Jane glazed donut was dyed pink, which I loved, and tasted a-okay! I've also had a couple of their minis in the past, and remember really enjoying the chocolate espresso. Although this wouldn't necessarily be my first choice given donuts or location, I would return if in a pinch! read more

They offer a nice variety of donuts that are different than the usual selections at other chain shops. Most of their donuts are the cake style donuts (not my preference, but still tasty). You can tell that each donut is crafted with care. All of my staff interactions have been great, even in their food cart. Will be back for sure. They were super busy when we arrived, to the point that we had to wait outside for the inside to clear out, since there's not very much space inside this location. $3 per donut and our donuts tasted like what you'd get at a Dunkin Donuts or from a convenience store honeybun. They were dry, despite the overwhelming amount of frosting trying to hide that fact. Definitely aesthetically pleasing, but they tasted bland and not at all fresh. Firecakes remains one of my favorite places to get a fancy donut in Chicago -- ranking right up there with Stan's, Doughnut Vault, Do-rite donuts, and other local favorites. Everytime I visit River North, I need to make a stop here to grumble a bit at the prices but then convince myself it's all worth it after taking a few bites of their consistently great donuts. This Lincoln Park location provides fortunately provides those same great flavors and textures and makes me hopeful that they'll eventually expand beyond Oak Park into the Northwest suburbs. Here were my thoughts on the different donuts I tried: - Seasonal fritter: Nice, crispy, and huge. One of my guilty pleasures as this has the perfect mix of firm cake batter, crispy fried exterior, and just the right amount of glaze. I know, it's not healthy but I can't stop eating it. - Matcha iced: The yeast donut is perfectly fluffy like a cloud, but with a nice light hint of matcha that is very aromatic, but not too sweet. Nicely balanced with a beautiful light green color. - Mini creme brulee: Small in sized but packed with flavor. The donut is nice and fluffy on the inside with a perfectly crisp outside. The inside is filled with a very light, but aromatic custard. - Pistachio Old Fashioned: Beautiful looking donut, though I'm personally not a fan of this style due to the slightly sour aspect. But if I had to eat anyone's old fashioned donut, this would be it. The pistachio is noticable in the look, but not too much in the flavor of the donut. Triple valhrona chocolate cake: One of the more refined chocolate donuts I've had. It has a deep chocolate flavor, with discernible differences between the firm chocolate cake, crisp chocolate shell, light frosting, and small chocolate bits. It's a bit muted, but well thought out donut. Overall, this Firecakes location is very comparable to the River North location and definitely worth a visit if you live anywhere here. The donuts may be a bit pricey, but the experience will be memorable. read more

I like Firecakes donuts, I think they're tasty, the staff there is friendly. My first visit was on a Sunday really close to closing time and I hadn't realized it because the staff didn't make me feel rushed. I ended up getting a box of a half dozen at the time and then an Arnold Palmer. The lemonade is tart, and I think by itself it would be great, but when you mix it with the iced tea it makes it the wrong side of tart. The donuts themselves are good, I've had the glazed, the chocolate iced, and the vanilla iced as well as the peanut butter cup. They're all good, but a little on the pricier side. I came here earlier this morning and ordered the chocolate mascarpone fig creme brûlée and the pumpkin pie donut. The bakers did a really good job with making the shell similar to a normal creme brûlée. I can hear the small cracks as I took each bite. The chocolate mascarpone was okay, I didn't have much filling in my donut. The pumpkin pie donut was surprisingly unsweet, despite it being covered in sugar. Even the creme on top was not that sweet either. It could've used a bit more sugar to be honest. But overall, I liked the donuts. They do have a lot of fun & cool options to pick from though. The special Pride donuts were soooo sweet and sugary! I liked them just fine as that's totally my style, but my friend found them to be a bit too much. I didn't love the Mimosa donut but I suppose if you're a big fan of the cocktail, it may be right up your alley. On the great quest for best donut shop in the city, Firecakes doesn't quite get there. They are aesthetically pleasing, fresh, and not overly dense or dry like how some cake donuts can be. It was a tad bit on the sweeter side, but not overwhelmingly so. They also have donuts + ice cream pairings here! They give you a default rectangular glazed donut and you have the option to choose from chocolate, vanilla, and pistachio ice cream. I think my favorite part of this donut shop is that they offer mini versions of their larger donuts so you can get a few of them and sample all of their flavors. DONUTS DONE RIGHT This place continues to be my favorite donut shop in Chicago. They make some of the most delicious donuts ever and that's a fact. I'm a huge fan of their peanut butter cup donut. Pre-Pandemic, I would always bring out of town friends and colleagues here for dessert. First they would say, "Donuts?" Then they would walk away extremely happy.
