This place has been super popular because of Instagram. I swear I have seen dozens of posts about the donut ice cream sandwiches from this place. I have not gotten the ice cream sandwich thing, but I will report back when I do. When I came here, I got the vanilla donut mainly because it was super cute. But those donuts are soooooo good. The donuts at Dunkin Donuts take one second to eat whereas these ones took me a solid ten minutes to eat. Of course, that was mixed with some conversation. Also, it was super good. But I do have to say, I am more a fan of cake donuts than yeast donuts so that was poor ordering on my part. But it was still really good so I'm not mad at all! But next time I go there I would like to try the old fashioned vanilla or one of the seasonal donuts. But because it is not the greatest donut I have ever had, I cannot give it five stars. read more

I came in this past Saturday around 11am and the selection was little to none. Since they were out of the buttermilk old fashioned, I tried the Tahitian vanilla iced and triple chocolate cake. The vanilla donut was very good, however the chocolate was not. Anyway, the vanilla was so good I came back the following morning to buy more to share. I got an assorted half dozen. Unfortunately, they were not as fresh as the day before. Firecakes makes the best buttermilk old fashioned in Chicago imo, but Sunday it fell flat. My boyfriend and cousins just thought they were ok. The dough itself was just so light and fluffy it leaves you wanting more. To this day I regret not getting more for the road. Aside from the donuts, the shop itself is really small. The ice cream sandwich is actually pretty plain, both donut- and ice cream-wise. Might be better to get one of their fancier donuts and put your own ice cream of choice in it. The triple chocolate donut is pretty good but not mind-blowing; the main distinguishing factor is the bits of Valrhona chocolate on top, which are yummy and add a nice crunch, but I wasn't impressed with the donut or glaze. Man o man! The donuts in this place are amazing! Stopped in there after a trip to the zoo recently. My boys devoured the donuts. I guess looking at animals can work up a powerful appetite. The chocolate frosted donut didn't stand a chance. There was enough chocolate on my boy's face for another donut at the end. I just wish they hadn't found the chocolate peanut butter donut. Firecakes was one of the highlights of my trip to Chicago; although I was only visiting the city for 3 short days, I went there on at least 4 separate occasions. They offer the perfect variety of donuts and a cozy sunlit seating area to enjoy enjoy them. My favourites had to have been the Maple Bacon Long John and the Chocolate Hazelnut Long John, but this could have changed if I had the time to try their full menu :) The donut ice cream sandwich was good, but I think it would have been better on a cakier donut, rather than the Honey Glaze. Since I was so obsessed with their food, I wanted to bring back something for my friend who can't have dairy. Thankfully they had a vegan cupcake (which looked delicious), which the staff was kind enough to box and save for me while I roamed the city for the day. I hired five cakes for my daughter's wedding that was planned in May 2022. After at least two emails requesting the event planner to call me she did call me to allow me to give my credit card to her over the phone. She asked if I wanted to include a tip at the time I was putting my down payment in February. I declined, stating I would like to give cash tip in person on the day of delivery. She informed me that the money may not make it back to the shop! Not very reassuring statement as to quality of delivery personnel . I found the means of communication of email only, to be very impersonal and not helpful as I was wanting to discuss ideas with the event planner Beth. I was directed to the website for any help in this area. I was told to call the week before the wedding to put in my donut order which I did and once again I was unable to talk with Beth and was told to email her . She sent me a link which I assumed was for me to choose my donuts only to find out that I was not supposed to use the link to order , it was just for donuts available to choose from that would work on the wall. I still don't know how I was supposed to communicate which donuts I wanted. She canceled that order and used my selections (from the link I was not supposed to order on) for the original order. I was never able to talk to her. My daughter however was able to have a conversation with her and placed the order . I received an early morning voice mail on the day of my daughter's wedding inquiring if I was still in need of the 90 donuts that I ordered on this link. This was while I was at the church with the donut wall already set up with donuts!! I would not recommend Firecakes to anyone who is planning a donut wall for their event. read more

I cannot believe the customer service (or lack there of) that this establishment possesses. The manager (Judith?) was incredibly rude, and scoffed at me while I was placing my coffee order. This was in addition to speaking over an employee as well as my friend while we were at the counter. I'm starting to build a little more experience when it comes to higher quality doughnuts since I've had Do-Rite on several occasions now... Do-Rite is my benchmark 5 star doughnut place. Anyways, I came to Firecakes with my date after dinner around 8:30pm on a Wednesday. When we got in, there was no line... but a rush of people came in about 10 minutes later. There's less variety than Do-Rite (or at least during the time I came in), but this place has a strength in doing so. First, there are some mini versions of the larger doughnuts for people who are calorie conscious or want to try many doughnuts at once. Second, I tasted and felt that the quality of the doughnuts were very high (master of few compared to being a jack of all trades). The employee was super welcoming, patient, and kind (always a good sign). The interior is small, but there is enough seating for up to 6 people maybe. My date got the donut ice cream sandwich and I got the bigger bacon doughnut. Her sandwich was so good because the doughnut was thick and they gave a good slab of ice cream too. You can taste the freshness, quality, and attention to preparation from her ice cream sandwich. The bacon pieces on top of my bigger bacon were... big and thick. There was a lot of complex flavors coming from the richness and slight saltiness of the bacon paired with the sweetness of the doughnut base. I can't say, between Do-Rite and Firecakes, that one is better than the other overall due to the differences explained above. Both are great places and please do visit Firecakes if you're anywhere near the area for decliious dessert or a sweet treat! I don't give these often, but Firecakes earned a rating of 5 stars! Pretty disappointed with this location, they seemed to be out of everything. First my daughter just wanted the ice cream from the ice cream sandwich.. so we ordered it not put together. When she was ready to eat it and asked for a spoon he said a knife was all they had. I also ordered a ice cream sandwich and was told there was no hot fudge or plate for it.. then I ordered a cappuccino and again was told anything espresso was unavailable because the machine was off since they said they were closing soon (in an hour). Employee just seemed very blah, quiet, and hard to understand. Donut and iced coffee were both very good. Ice cream was meh. I've heard great things about the oak park location so hopefully Ill have a better experience there. read more

This is my favorite donut shop in Chicago. Thy have great staff, great service, and best of all, AWESOME food! I always come for the ice cream donut sandwich. The ice cream surprisingly doesn't melt as quick as regular ice cream, and it is very rich and creamy. The donut is prepared very well and is not too sweet and not too bland. The staff are very helpful and efficient, and patient with our order. I recommend visiting if you ever crave for a sweet treat, as they have other great donuts that they sell. I've been seeing posts about Firecakes on social media for a while now and I've been meaning to stop in. Went there for breakfast on a Saturday and to be honest I was a bit disappointed. I ordered the orange poppy seed donut which was way too sweet. The glaze on the outside was pure sugar and was an unpleasant barrier to the inside of the donut. I sampled a few other donuts which I also found to be very sweet. None of the donuts were served hot. I did like their coffee and the ambiance of the cafe- nice place to spend a chilly morning. Within about 30 mins, my donuts arrived, with no coffee. The ticket clearly said donuts and coffee were ordered. The drive basically went ‍ "sorry, but I have other deliveries". I called Firecakes and they offered me a refund. Me, dealing with a crabby toddler who is boycotting sleep, and having found out this morning that my Keurig died on me, insisted that I needed a coffee. They brought me one!!! This place is the cutest! Our hostel was nearby, so we came here for breakfast one morning. The interior offers a vintage vibe without being pretentious. Very instragrammable. There is scant seating, so don't look here for a group setting. The donuts themselves are incredible unique--maple bacon pineapple!? I went for a lemon poppyseed old fashioned, which was great for the first few bites, but then it got too sweet and dense for a breakfast item. They do artisan donuts that simply taste amazing. Their take on traditional favorites like the Jelly or the Old Fashioned will have you comparing other donut shops to gas stations. It's small and cozy with a fireplace and seating for only a few small groups. Great little spot for a morning stop with La Columbe coffee on deck as well. This review is slightly skewed by the fact that I was introduced to donuts in Los Angeles, which I never knew was like- the fresh donut capital of the world. (Simply put- it had more fresh donut places than anywhere I've ever lived.) The girl who was working today around 2:00 pm was extremely warm and friendly. I needed to separate the donuts with nuts on them from the ones that didn't and she was more than happy to provide separate boxes for them. If I didn't have to interact in any way with the really unfriendly people who work here, I would probably stop by every week to pick up donuts. Have had some wonderful buttermilk and pistachio old fashioned here plus really good valrhona triple chocolate cake donuts. Donuts are good here. The service is NOT. The cashier lady was flustered and distracted by a family before me and gave away my purchase to them. When I mentioned that the customer before me took mine, she did not want to hear that. When I got to my car I realized the bag was missing a donut. It was pouring outside so I didn't go back. This particular Firecakes almost seems like a hidden gem. The area was pretty quiet and we had walked over from Wrigley Field on a Wednesday morning looking for it. There was only one woman working in there but it wasn't busy or anything so that was fine. Would have tried the Ice cream donut sandwich but it was cold that day haha. Grabbed 6 donuts (2 honey glazed, 2 churro, 1 old fashion and one peanut butter), a lemonade and a chai latte with soy milk. Everything was pretty good. Probably wouldn't get the peanut butter again though. It was cute but I was surprised by the amount of peanut butter. There were a couple tables inside and a couple outside as well. Would definitely recommend if you're in the area. To some it may be pricey for donuts. I think i spent almost $25 on all of it but to me it was worth it and about what I've been spending on donuts since being in Chicago. Hopefully the other location is as good as this one. read more

Firecakes is the first honest to goodness, old school, tender, soft, delicious donut I've had in North America since Lee's in Vancouver, and the only other place I know of where you can get a REAL donut rather than the cakey bullcrap that most boutique shops sell, or the generic bready mass produced crap at most stores. I am not the biggest donut fan as I tend to find most places prepare them too sweet or the pastry itself is lacking. I found Firecakes while walking around with a few friends and we were hungry for a snack. I was pleasantly surprised with the donuts - not overly sweet on a soft yet crisped dough.
