My experience with Fireclay Tile was deeply disappointing. I used these tiles for a Master bathroom project, I bought matte subway tiles so nothing complicated in regards to shape or layouts. The tiles I received were so misshapen and inconsistent that my installer -- a seasoned professional whose entire career is focused on tile work -- had to spend nearly twice the normal amount of time recutting and adjusting them just to make them usable. The glazing defects were deeply concerning. Fireclay, including the CEO who I spoke to directly, attributes these issues to the handmade nature of their products, referring to them as "crazing," which involves visible cracks in the glaze and is presented as normal by this company. Within the first 90 days, I had to replace more than 10 tiles due to this defect. Fireclay has indicated that this "crazing" is related to the recycled materials used in their tiles, trying to normalize it. At this price point better consistency and quality control should be expected in glazing formulas, inconsistent ingredients are why they are unable to make this right.. Cracks in tiles--especially those used in wet areas--are not normal and should not be dismissed as acceptable. Many tiles also broke throughout project due to uneven edges and brittle spots. Handmade should mean high craftsmanship, not unpredictable sizing, warping, and defects. My installer was shocked by the poor quality and described these as the worst tiles he has worked with in terms of shape, size, and durability. He even noted that basic Home Depot tiles would have performed better. Fireclay shifted to a money-driven, direct-to-consumer business model years ago when they were in a turnaround period ( check out the many articles that the CEO released) . While selling directly to consumers is not inherently an issue--these are subway tiles, and they should not be difficult to install--but the reality is very different. Even when following Fireclay's specifications precisely, the tiles' warping, defects, and extreme inconsistency made installation unusually difficult. This was true even for a certified professional with decades of experience. In the end, the tiles look acceptable only because of the significant extra labor required which led to double the cost, as well as the overage material I had to purchase to ensure I could keep up with the breakage . Over the three years they've been installed in my bathroom, I've continued to replace tiles that cracked due to "crazing." What should have been a premium experience turned into an expensive, exhausting ordeal. I would not recommend Fireclay Tile to anyone expecting consistent quality, durability, or transparent guidance. read more

Update with photos at bottom ** , I saw someone selling their left over Evergreen tiles on FB Marketplace and fell in love with the deep, rich color. I was already planning a remodel in my bathroom in deep green/gold/black and it seemed perfect. I did some Research and found they have a showroom here in SF. Went to go look around and see the tile in person. We were greeted by Mark at the door. He was very friendly, and offered tons of info on their process and different tiles, etc. Mark made us feel welcomed even though we didn't have an appt and we didn't spend too much time in the showroom. He helped me every step of the way and answered all my questions. Just keep in mind, lead times to receive tile can be 6-8weeks, not including shipping. All tiles are made to order and handmade so it takes some time. I've finally finished the remodel. However, if there is one complaint I have about this tile, I really wish you could see more of the crackling from far away. You really can't tell unless you get reallllly close. There are parts of the wall where I ran out of tile and had to use small square tiles. I found someone selling their remnants off FB marketplace (by another company) but I feel it blends really well! I went with the tiles on FB because for the amount I needed to finish the bathroom, it wasn't worth the price. I spent $50 instead of $800. read more

Fireclay makes beautiful tile, but at $34 per square foot, most people would expect a sample tile to color match or come at least close to the tile ordered. When i received my tile from fireclay, the color was not even close to the sample and the trim pieces also were not even close. When i reached out to the company, i was told that there is a color variation disclaimer on their website. I didn't realize that meant i would be receiving tiles that don't even come close to the appearance or the sample tile. To add to it, two of the boxes i received in my shipment were an entirely different color (which ironically matched the sample tile way more), these boxes couldn't even be used in the project because it would completely ruin the look of the bathroom. I am now stuck with extremely expensive tile I don't really like and I just want people to be warned that the sample tiles won't even look like the tile shipped to you and that you may receive extremely different colors in the same shipment. I find this extremely unacceptable for such pricey tile. I won't be purchasing tile from this company ever again. read more

He helped us pick out a gorgeous patterned moroccan style design that had a lovely geometric pattern and subtle colors that complemented the other paint and tile choices in our bathroom. At the time that I am writing this, I am still waiting for additional tile to finish the job, because I came up short. How I came up short is questionable. My wife and I had problems with Fireclay from day one. Initial order - I tried four times to submit an order online, with no success. Fireclay couldn't figure out what the error was. So I had to write a check, and then email them a picture of the check (we're on the east coast, they're on the west), before they would initiate the order. The online ordering issue was never figured out. Many weeks later, we received our tiles - but not enough to complete our job. Follow-up order - We had to send a 'control sample' back to them to order the additional tiles. (I'm unclear as to why Fireclay can't hold on to at least one tile from the job, temporarily, in case this kind of issue comes up. Poor quality control process imho.) Three-plus more weeks go by. When we finally received the additional tiles, they were the WRONG color - even though we sent a control sample to work from, and Fireclay knew the correct color from our initial order. Second (attempted) follow-up order - So, Fireclay agreed to fix their mistake at no charge to us. Kudos to them. But they again needed a control sample, for which they provided a shipping label. We mailed the tile sample out immediately. Two weeks later, they told us they never received the sample. Again, a big stumble - it took that long for Fireclay to notify us, even though it was Fireclay's label (for overnight delivery), allowing them to track the package's delivery status. At that point, a simple tile order had taken two and a half months to try to resolve, and Fireclay still fell short in completing our order. So, after speaking with our rep Robin (who was very helpful throughout), Fireclay gave us the choice of trying one more time, or getting a refund on the tiles. We chose the refund. Again, kudos to them for offering the refund, but our experience with Fireclay was fraught with difficulties from the outset. So...unfortunately I can't recommend them. I'm sure if you live locally/San Francisco area you'd have a better experience, but I would very strongly suggest that if you aren't near their showroom or production facility, you should choose another tile vendor. read more

I highly recommend Fireclay Tile. My wife and I just remodeled our bathroom using Fireclay tiles on the walls surrounding the tub and on the floor. The tiles are beautiful! Every person who came to work on our bathroom complimented us on the tiles, and our friends and family loved them, too. Ariel, a showroom designer, helped us with colors, and was very helpful throughout the entire process. She answered all of our questions quickly. We also had three renderings done. The bathroom looks just like the rendering we picked, if not better. Overall, we had a great experience and the bathroom looks wonderful. The tiles are expensive, but worth it. I ordered tiles from Fireclay for a small job--re-tiling around my fireplace. I chose Fireclay based on a combination of selection, apparent quality, and price (relatively lower than some other handmade tile companies). I was particularly impressed with the customer service--the assigned design consultant Tiffanie was super helpful and thorough in helping me decide how many tiles I needed, including providing a really useful 3D rendering based on the dimensions I sent her. The tiles took awhile to arrive once ordered, but they were packed super carefully (arrived in pristine condition) and were just what I hoped for. Minor color variation, but that added to the look. They are also notably more sturdy than some of the mainstream commercial options I considered. Tiffanie has followed up multiple times to check how the project is going and if I'm happy with the tiles, and again, the customer service has been notable. The only downside is the cost for a small job--there was a $150 "small batch" charge, and it didn't make sense to order enough tiles to go above the threshold that would eliminate that. However, on the plus side, there seemed to be a number of extra tiles beyond the square footage I paid for, so it was great to have some spares in case anything went wrong during installation. This is the third and final time that I will order from Fireclay. The first two times my orders were filled in a timely manner and I was very happy. Thats why this most recent experience came at such a surprise. I ordered the tile and needed it quickly so I paid an additional $1280 in quick ship fees. I followed up several times during the order process as they said for the additional money the order would ship in 3-4 weeks. at the close of the third week, I was told the order was complete. During the following emails to ask about shipment I was told that it needed to cold for 24 hrs but would go out immediately and take 3-5 business days to get from CA to IL. They sat on the finished product for 1 week before shipping. Then sent me an email saying my order was delayed by 3 weeks. Then sent me a confirmation it shipped. Then told me it would take 3 weeks to get to IL. the entire experience has left a very bad taste in my mouth. not to mention they sent me an advertisement for the same tile on a 5day ship at less than 1/2 what I spent. no more orders for me. I'll be sure to warn others too. Update: 4/22/23 Fireclay rep contacted me. They said they were very sorry about the confusion caused by their mixed messages. They offered to reimburse me for the entire order. As I said previously, the first two orders went smoothly. Absolutely gorgeous, with magnificent staff. Katie is your best bet. I described my idea and motifs to her; she asked only a few clarifying questions while listening carefully. Then she helped me pull down every sample I thought might work and watched while I tried this combo and that. What I thought I wanted didn't create the right effect, very frustrating: it wasn't harmonious. When I asked, Katie quickly built a new sample set with just one change, and everything fell into place. It was unexpected but exactly right. Then she even set out a few alternates, and they were gorgeous as well, but her first try was on the nose... and it's about to be on our walls. Talk to Katie. She's an artist in her own right. I saw a picture online. It led me to the website. I read about the company. I could really get behind an employee owned b corp and hand made stuff, even if the prices were astonishing. I was really excited about it. I ordered some samples. It took 3 tries to get me the sample I actually wanted. I was told that I had to order 4 to 8 weeks out from the time I needed them. I thought that was a lot, considering I was ordering less than 50 square feet of tile, but, I did it anyhow. When I followed up I was given excuse after excuse for why they were delayed. At one point I wanted to add 3 square feet of tile and was told my order would take an additional 2 weeks. It took so long to receive my tiles (4 weeks past the max of 8 weeks) that I have to hire someone separately to do the backsplash instead of bundling it with other work. To top it off, some of the tiles in the package are damaged - not broken from shipping but warped and misshapen. I think that the story for the company is very compelling but if you want to be charging far above premium prices you need to work on your customer service experience. Just absolutely terrible. In the time that it took to complete this order, I ordered, received and installed all the other tiles and hardwood for my home. It took a lot for me to write this review as I don't normally write negative reviews, but, I could not let this one pass. Really disappointed. read more

I ended up ordering my fish scale tiles from Fireclay for several reasons. I ordered color samples from several companies, and Fireclay was the only one that did not charge me for the samples or the shipping! I had a personal account rep who helped me on the phone and online by sending me pictures and more, yes more, color samples. Her name was Tiffannie, and she was GREAT! The pricing was competitive with the other companies I looked at. I think that FIreclay was slightly less by the time it was all said and done. When my tile arrived from California all the way to Delaware it looked fine. Only two tiles were broken! I will post pics in April of the finished kitchen when I get back to the beach . Fireclay has an outstanding color range to choose from. They also have a number of unusual sizes and shapes that really get your ideas flowing. The staff are very patient, knowledgeable and helpful. Jane went out of her way when we finalized our order; she logged in on her day off to make sure our order went through. You can get free samples to take home to be sure the colors work in the light and space of your own home. We ordered during a peak period and were told it would be 7 to 9 weeks for the tiles to arrive (they are all hand painted). Ours took the full 9 weeks but were well worth the wait. Great customer service at both the San Francisco location and the San Jose location. I am not a big spender, but the staff at the SF location treated me like I was buying the whole place. I just needed a couple of tiles to replace two odd sized and super odd colored cracked tiles in my bathroom. The sales person gave me some sample tiles to take home and then gave me directions to the "bone yard" in San Jose in case the samples didn't work. They didn't so off to the boneyard I went. I spent half a day outside in the sun going through boxes and boxes of tiles looking for a 2"x6" aquamarine, flat finish ceramic tile and ......never found it. But the staff at the San Jose store was also very nice. If you come up empty handed after an endless and exhausting search but still give a place a great review they must be good. I will use them someday on a real project and I hope you will too. read more

I have been ordering samples of Fireclay tile, dreaming of the day when we'd be ready to use them in a project. A local B-corp, using recycled materials and environmentally friendly practices, with so many beautiful colors, so many shapes - what's not to love? I have amassed many samples, for so many future fantasy applications. As a homeowner, and not a renovation expert or a designer, my only experience with tile is as a handy DIYer, using whatever we liked at the big box store. I finally had a project that was right, and I was prepared to bite the bullet on purchasing the most expensive tile I've ever ordered, so I reached out to Fireclay to get the scoop. There is no way to order on your own online, and there is no information posted on the website about what lead times might be like, so I eagerly awaited a response from my design consultant, blissfully unaware of how long it takes to get tile, admittedly not thinking that they may not make it until I order it. After two weeks with no response, I reached out again, figuring, okay, maybe we won't have time to do anything fancy, we'll skip the design consult phase, and just get some simple tile, that should be quicker. After another week of missing each other, I finally heard from my design consultant, and apparently stunned her into silence with my naivete. She informed me that a 4-6 week turnaround is actually quite quick (it's often 8+weeks) once she managed to speak again. That may have worked for us three weeks ago when I first reached out, but at this point, it's longer than I'm willing to wait to get this project wrapped up. You don't know some of this stuff until you learn, and this was my first experience, so now I know. I'll select my tile much earlier when we start our next renovation, and I'm tempted to shop for it somewhere that feels a little friendlier about helping me understand the process. I know my job isn't huge, and my turn around time on this one is short since we didn't plan to be doing this project right now, but sometimes you just have to pounce. The bottom line is, I have been dreaming and waiting to get this tile until I could afford to splurge on it, and it was disappointing to get such mediocre service. Guess I should have read the Yelp reviews in advance so I had some idea of what to expect around timing, but it seems like the Fireclay folks should also be used to answering that type of question for those of us who don't order tile every day. read more
