We were dealing with ugly bathroom tiles and a big hole in the wall. I contacted three contractors and all three were comparable in pricing. One contractor didn't make a site visit. Another contractor couldn't start until two weeks later. Alex made a site visit and was very personable. With the lead time, we chose Alex. Right when we chose him, he wanted to start that day! I said OK. That afternoon the demolition began. In two weeks he completed the job. He will work around your schedule. We had a family incident and needed to push back the work a day. We also had to wait a few days for the faucet to be delivered. The hours are up to you. We were OK with his team working into the late evening to get the job done because we were down a bathroom. Vitali and Alex work really really hard and long hours. There were some up sale items, but we picked which ones we wanted. Our vanity was in bad shape; so we updated the vanity, sink, backsplash and faucet. Alex quoted us a great price and offered to do tile flooring which would have made the bathroom even nicer, but we decided that the flooring would be fine. Maybe save that for the next remodel. Going through any type of remodel or home update is emotional and risky. We did a home remodel years back and that's when we learned you can really only choose two of the three: quality, cost, or speed. With Alex we were able to get close to all three. Obviously your home is very dear, and there are small little things that you can sweat over. Your home will never be perfect. Not a year goes by without some work that needs to be done to my home. Our project was tiling two adjoining bathrooms. Our contractor had already stripped the floor to the subfloor. Alex and his colleague laid the Ditra waterproofing in preparation for the tile. They were able to work with our very special condition: we were using tiles from mixed remainder boxes from Heath Ceramics ($5 / box!) which are only available sight-unseen - so you can only see the colors, shapes, and sizes after you buy them. While we had laid out the tiles on mesh backing to communicate the patterns, Alex and his colleague, Roman, had to carefully figure out how to make them fit. The smaller bathroom used lozenge-shaped tiles in a basketweave pattern that ran at a diagonal which required creating small slices of tile to fill the space next to the bathtub. The other room used tiles that were not perfectly square and therefore were laid using an irregular spacing that reinforced the (carefully selected) mix of colors and glazing. After years of putting it off, I finally decided to re-tile our fireplace. Alex was instrumental in making sure I chose the right tile - - a designer I was working with had originally recommended a marble façade, but Alex noted how the existing tile was stained from years of burning fires in the fireplace and recommended that I install a porcelain tile so that I could wipe things clean. That alone made working with Alex worth it, since I would've been very disappointed to of spent so much money on new tile and installation only to have the same staining problem a year later. He also recommended that I reinstall the hearth tile, which after almost 100 years, was looking a bit shabby, and he noted that with the new façade, the hearth tile being dated would be even more apparent. Alex and his crew did an amazing job of installing a new tile floor in the connected kitchen, laundry room, and bathroom of our 108 year old home. There were lots of cuts and odd angles. They also invested the time to come up with a layout for the large rectangular tiles that worked well both structurally and visually. When he first visited the house to prepare his bid Alex immediately saw a change in the floor angle where there had been an addition (many years ago) that I never noticed even though I have lived in the house for over 40 years. He immediately said how that would affect the installation, something else none of the other people who bid on the job noticed. He also diagnosed the likely need for some structural repairs to the floor due to an old toilet leak. Once the old floor was removed it turned out he was right. His crew did the necessary removal of the old wood floor, installed additional joists and put in new wood. I did the preparation (removal of old vinyl floor and underlay and installation of the new backerboard. Alex was fine with that and even gave me some pointers on how to do it. He did all this work with the best price of any of the estimates I got. In addition, when it was clear that there would be some add-on costs because of the floor repairs he did the additional work for a fair addition to the cost. It only took 2 days and we were able to use extra 12" tiles from another project, which he cut to size for both the rectangular pieces on the front facade and larger pieces on the bottom. They also had to even out the concrete underneath the bottom tiles so they would sit flush with the wood floor. There's an axiom that goes, when you hire a contractor you have to make a trade off between 3 factors: 1) speed, 2) affordability, 3) workmanship. You can have any 2, but you can't have all 3. Alex just completed our bathroom tile and our experience with him was so good that we think he proved this axiom to be completely false. -- Speed: Alex understands that managing his client's expectations is almost as important as doing the actual work. In our case we would be without the use of our shower for several days and Alex was crystal clear with us about how long the job would take. Not only was his estimate of time very reasonable, but he finished the job several days early. One might think he estimated longer than he really needed, but in the end it didn't matter to us because we would have been just as happy with the original timeline. -- Affordability: You should always get several competing bids - and always for the same amount of work if possible. That way you can compare apples to apples in terms of labor and materials. In our case Alex's quote was very reasonable. He came the same day we called him and showed up on time. He provided a written estimate and honored the price when we decided to hire him. The whole time he was working he kept us informed of materials costs so we wouldn't have any surprises. -- Workmanship: If you're going to hire Alex you have to first understand that he only does tile setting and nothing else. We were thrilled with the quality of his workmanship. After the tile grout was done he even went back over the work to look for any gaps and made sure it was absolutely perfect. DECISION We recently got our bathroom fixed. We had to get the floor + wall + tub surroundings tiled, and on that occasion also decided to replace the tub fixtures. For the tiling, I had gotten 3 quotes from various tilers in SF (all picked based on YELP review, proximity, and felling lucky). All 3 made good impressions, however eventually not only came Alex out as the most affordable, but he also was the only one (!) who actually recommended to tear out the old (rotten wood) floor first, rather than just tile over it (as the other two, pricier tilers had suggested). So I felt this guy is honest and proud of good craftsmanship, and we decided to go with Alex. PLANNING We had a pretty good idea how we wanted the bathroom to look like, and selected the tiles and a shop of our own choice, then provided the drawings to Alex (and reviewed with him... he was OK with the plans). Since we wanted to change some of the faucets etc. we had to include a plumber. We had the choice of bringing in our own plumber or go with Alex' recommendation (what we did). EXECUTION Since we have only one bathroom and a fairly small apartments (and a little kid) having work down with us there was not an option. So we picked a time where we were traveling (in fact, out of the country0, and handed the key over to Alex to get the work done while we were out. We stayed in touch via email / phone while out (although there was not much to discuss, since all went well). While he could not commit on getting 100% done in a (short) timeframe (incl. holidays / weekends), he said he would "do his best". And he did indeed! There was a plumbing issue 9the fixtures I had bought did not fit), so his plumber bought new ones (and of course gave me the bill, but that was exactly what I wanted, rather than the project being delayed because of that). RESULT In summary, Alex not only delivered, but even over-delivered. Some of the things he said may be difficult to do (hard to describe here, but e.g. having the tile meet the hardwood exactly under the door) he even did, and pretty much all in the allocated time (only short follow-up visits were needed). I even asked him to install a new shower rod, for which he had to drill holes into the tiles... and one broke in that process, that he immediately replaced, without charging extra time. Our new bathroom looks great, and we're really happy that we want with Alex for that job. SUMMARY Excellent service, easy process, great result, and affordable. There is really not much to improve. If anything, it was hard at times to understand him when on a call phone (English is not his mother tongue, nor is it mine), but it was not an issue, especially not during F2F meetings - but I thought I'd point it out in case it's a big deal for somebody.
