Hook & Ladder - gluten free bread
    Maddy R.

I ordered for pickup at the Bloomington location. The people working were extremely nice! They do have gluten free bread as an option (pictured below). Overall would recommend!

Where's the meat? Sandwiches tasted good but they were all bread and no meat! I feel like someone is either not doing their job or skimping on the meat!

Tuna sandwich on wheat with no onion was the order....

The quality of the pastrami, its seasoning, the textures and bright flavors of the breads and bagels the nova the chopped liver the extra creamy marinated Cole slaw and perfect half sour pickles ( wISH they had bialys!). All perfect. All old world. Our favorite very old deli in West Palm Beach was sold 1.5 years ago and gone gone gone are the DELIGHTFUL happy charming old staff and the perfect old world flavors, cooking. In Sarasota where we just lived the last 5 years, a new deli closed after just 2 years, and there is nothing left. We've been visiting family in Sarasota every year for 40 years. Gone too in the Twin Ciries is the ownership by brothers Scot and Stu of Hopkin's beloved Crossroads Deli just last year. The new owners, a corporation owning 6-8 other restaurants have CHANGED almost all the recipes for breads, cakes , wonderous cookies and 80 % of all pastries! No more butter, no more fine ingredients and no more of their once " Grossinger's taste/quality" STELLAR seeded rye bread! They even eliminated the lemon flavoring. In their incomparable lemon coconut cake! Their stuffed cabbage is one of their only true deli dishes left. Sandwiches are half their original size...... heart breaking after going there 3-4 times a week for 25 years........ Cecil's of course had to cut back on the $$ use of butter in their pastries. But they have WORKED VERY HARD to still retain their wonderous long long ago heart warming flavors. ALL their sandwiches are AUTHENTIC. Old world New York City flavors! Made with care and love. My husband loves their beautiful generous Nova salmon platte. Noshing away happily! I love their pastrami Rachel's with plentiful half sour pickles lots of Russian dressing and creamy Cole slaw. Mmmmmm. I hope and pray Cecil's owner refrains for a long long time from selling his rare business. We must support Cecil's too.... Or lose it with all the others, and lose part of our joy and heart. At lunch,…read morethere can be a mad rush for their classic roast beef sandwich, but the staff handles the crowd with efficiency and detail. I was on the street in front of Clancy's when one of their customers was mis-identified as an officer of an organization that was terrorizing Minneapolis. It had nothing to do with Clancy's! As I tried to get to my car, people yelled the most obscene and disgusting epitaphs at the couple in front of me. I was just walking down Grand Avenue. They were even spitting at this innocent individual. As a liberal who marched for civil rights and against the war in Vietnam during the 1960s and 1970s, I was horrified. Blaming Clancy's is ignorant, and an integral part of how this country is dismantling. Clancy's Meats & Fish is important to our neighborhood, and represents the kindness and empathy that has been representative of Minnesota for decades. Give them your support.

On one side is a meat market with a variety of cuts of steaks, lamb, and other meats, which all looked fresh and quite nice. They also have a variety of items such as canned goods, pasta, eggs, etc. on the shelves opposite the meat counter. The entire place is quite sunny, pleasant, and cozy. On the other side is the eat-in, take-out deli sandwiches, that are made to order. The quality of the ingredients is excellent. The bread is freshly made (crispy baguette type) and you have a choice of Roast Beef, Roast Turkey, Tuna Salad, Smoked Ham, or Corned Beef. All sandwiches are $16.50 each (including tax) and come with a choice of mayonnaise, spicy stone ground mustard, red leaf lettuce, thin sliced red onion, salt, pepper, oil, vinegar, raw grated horseradish, pickled jalapeno, and roasted bell pepper. The default includes all toppings so if you don't want everything, be sure to specify what you do NOT want. Surprisingly, they do not carry any diet soda, nor do they stock any national brands (only local pop). There is a large menu on the wall, and you order at the counter and pick up the order (no table service). The food was attractively presented, and very, very good. My only gripe (besides the lack of diet pop) is that it's on the expensive side for lunch. Two sandwiches, a couple of bags of chips, and a couple of cans of pop will easily top $40, although I'd say the quality is top-notch.

Today I tried their Roast Beef on Weck, which is carved roast beef on a type of roll called a Weck (a Kaiser-style roll topped with coarse salt and caraway seeds.). The restaurant was busy, and this is not a trendy place! I'd be surprised if there was anyone in the restaurant who was not of Medicare age (which also describes me; I'm not being ageist, just truthful). This is something that is available for lunch, during the week (not on weekends). Previously, I wanted to order this before. It was at the beginning of the lunch hour, so unfortunately the end pieces were cooked well-done. I asked if they would cut from the center, which is much more rare, but they wouldn't do that. This time, we came later and I could see that the roast beef was gloriously rare, which is what I like. The sandwich was quite enjoyable because it was juicy and flavorful. It comes with a side of cole slaw which is vinegar based (which I liked, but isn't traditional in the Midwest). It's difficult to find good, rare roast been in the Twin Cities, so this was another good find. My wife had the matzo ball soup, which remains high quality. The beef on weck sandwich (with coleslaw) was nearly $20, which is a bit on the expensive side. The service is spotty. It depends upon who is your waitstaff person (I knew it would be slow based on our previous experience with this person).

I immediately started to worry. Unfortunately my worries have slowly " come true" ...and with an extremely upset heart, Crossroads has changed. Scott and Stu had dedication and sheer love of cooking and baking with the BEST of ingredients and exquisite rare perfect use of spices. Their flavors in everything they touched were some of the VERY BEST I have experienced nationally and in my home state of NY where my father taught Biochemistry in the Bronx at Einstein Med School (1955-1980) and where my intense passion for Delicatessen cuisine originated. Coming almost daily to Crossroads truly made my day! I adored EVERYTHING they created. Even shipped a large lemon coconut cake to mom's beloved 90 year old boss at Scarsdale Medical Center 8 years ago! Today: Their rye bread with caraway seeds was identical to Grossinger's. Now almost zero flavor. The broasted chicken if served hot fresh out of the cooker is still excellent. Some of the original spices gone. The lemon coconut cake has zero real lemon flavor just deep yellow coloring, Their pastrami and corned beef also lost 1/3 to 1/2 of their original flavor plus the size of the sandwiches 1/3-1/2 the original size. The new main dishes are almost tasteless. Their original recipes for matzo ball soup, etc are still good - - vary 8-10 rating. They no longer use as much/ perhaps any butter in their coffee cake " breads" which used to be a 10. Many cookies and tiny pastries in the same display case are still good. Compared to many other restaurants today they are now just " an ok". Gone are the days when Crossroads Deli was " TRULY SPECTACULAR "......

The store is right next to a kosher sushi spot which is pretty convenient for those who keep kosher. When I walked in, it was quite crowded with a lot of other Jews ( I am also Jewish) which I always take as a great sign, but the selection was super limited compared to what I am used to and the prices were incredibly high for most normal items. I know there is always a large markup for kosher items, but this was significantly higher than I have seen before and seemed to apply to items which are generally kosher by default like oil and other regular household supplies. Furthermore, a lot of the items have no price tag - especially the freezer section which made me have no idea what I was going to pay until I got up front. I ended up leaving with a box of frozen knishes (7.99) and a refrigerated pair of knishes (4.99). The refrigerated section knishes were delicious, I heated them back up in the oven when I got home and really enjoyed it. Much better than the knish I had at Cecil's. But as a store, the prices are way too high for me to give a higher rating even though it is nice to see a kosher store.
