Hook and ladder was good...until I found a hair in it
    Erin C.

I'm pretty easy to please and rarely share an opinion unless it was stellar experience or a complete dud. Unfortunately, this take out trip was pretty bad. First, they were out of meatballs. Bummer..but okay I'll order something else. I get the hook and ladder with a side of Mac n cheese. The Mac n cheese was terrible--very soupy and no flavor (also no breadcrumbs). The sandwich was pretty good until I pulled out a long piece of hair (not my hair color). Ugh. Staff weren't very friendly or motivated either. I don't think we'll be going back.

It's been a few years since I went here. I don't really remember much about it. Not memorable or bad but wasn't impressed enough to go back.

On my most recent visitation there were fifteen bikers enjoying a mid-ride bean kick. This coffee isn't good, but it doesn't matter, it's the spot to congregate. Third space final boss. I'll keep it simple for the rookies to understand why this place absolutely crushes: STEP #1: Go to Big Dave's Deli STEP #2: Order his sandwich STEP #3: Savor the price, wolf the grub STEP #4: Enter into a hash brown scented coma At one point in time some quartet of old dudes played euchre here enough to make their wives jealous. On top of that, the town didn't let this place close even when it tried. It's a beacon of hope that fights inflation and ensures full tummies. Big Dave is the biggest for a reason.

Today, I spent some time clearing out my father's home and helping my nephew, who'd been staying with him prior to his death, settled in a new residential situation. As I was driving through Danville on the way home, I stopped at the town square and decided to have a late lunch in the area. To be honest, I headed first to Square Burger. However, as a wheelchair user I was dismayed to see a step into their establishment. No go. I wasn't in the mood for Mayberry Cafe despite my love for the place. I looked over and realized this was a great chance to check out The Beehive. The Beehive is just off the square and shares a building with Two Guys Pies. The US 36 entrance is not wheelchair friendly, however, the back entrance has a nice concrete ramp (I did find the sidewalk a bit narrow - I noticed as I entered here that had I desired to visit Two Guys Pies there was a bicycle on the sidewalk that would have easily blocked my access). This is an attractive building. The Beehive has been here a little over 10 years. I'm not sure I'll describe The Beehive accurately - it's sort of a coffeehouse meets breakfast/lunch joint where you can also get fresh, local honey and other frozen goods to take out. They do catering and offer deli sandwiches, beer/wine carryout, a build your own salad menu, local meat and produce, and the aforementioned frozen goods. They also have a small retail area where you can buy honey, t-shirts, and other items. A good amount of their sweets utilize honey instead of sugar. I parked on the square in one of their accessible spots (parking is free, up to 5 hours for accessible parking but only two hours for others). I wheeled around the building - someone was planting plants/flowers and was super friendly and stopped his work to make sure I could get through). They close at 4pm on Saturdays - I arrived about 3ish. I ordered one of their combos that included a 1/2 sandwich, chips, and a drink. They do have unsweetened iced tea, fountain drinks, and a variety of canned/bottled drinks (including Choc-ola!). They also have a ton of coffee/latte type options. I found the prices to be reasonable. This is especially true given these are healthier options (though certainly not everything here qualifies as "healthy."). The employees were friendly. They were quiet, however, service was quite good. I loved the atmosphere. I had zero issues finding a wheelchair friendly table. I could independently reach everything I needed, though I'm sure they'd have assisted if needed. This wasn't a mind-blowing experience. It was simply a really good lunch in a pleasing atmosphere at a fair price. After an emotional experience like clearing out my family home (which isn't yet done), this was a great way to relax and calm the emotions. I enjoyed the sandwich, which is toasted, and they had Miss Vickie's potato chips. I'm not sure why it took me so long to stop here, however, I'd easily return for the simple yet wonderful menu, great drinks, warm atmosphere, and friendly employees.

It's just passed the Cafeteria entrance with a nice size sign that can be seen easily from that point. Hand sanitizer is located directly in the middle of the entrance. Masks are required to enter and all staff wear them as well plus the employees were wearing gloves. Market Place was a pleasant surprise as I entered and saw the cafeteria style hot and cold buffet pans. Unfortunately, the buffet closes at 2:00 p.m. and it was 4:00 p.m. but deli sandwiches, burgers and salads are available until 11:30 p.m. There's probably much more but I only saw a few customers orders. Joe, the owner, has a terrific personality and a fun guy and said he'd take good care of me when I came back downtowns. You cannot phone in orders but the line moved very quickly. A nice dining area is at the opposite end of the coolers with approximately 9 or 10 tables. You'll find a full coffee menu with a barista next to the check out counter. I picked up a hot Pumpkin Spice Latte along with a bottled Diet Coke. Along the side walls are chilled wall cases with many types of beverages, all types of snacks, salads, yogurts, fruit cups, cheese sticks, P3's and much more. A small breakfast island contains boxed cereals. So many options in this much needed and appreciated Cafe that stays open till 11:30 p.m. Patients' family and friends plus all the employees have a evening option to grab a meal, snack or beverage. Thanks Joe! I'll be back!!
