The food quality at Firehouse Subs was fine -- no complaints there. Unfortunately, everything else about the experience was unacceptable. The staff's behavior was shockingly unprofessional. Employees were loudly swearing and openly talking negatively about customers where everyone in the dining area could clearly hear. It created an uncomfortable and awkward environment. Operationally, it was just as bad. They waited until our subs were completely finished -- and getting cold -- before even starting the fries. Basic timing and coordination seemed nonexistent. On top of that, I witnessed employees punching in coworkers over the phone who were apparently late to work, which raises serious concerns about integrity and management. The dining area was also dirty, with tables that hadn't been wiped down. Again, the food itself was fine. But professionalism does not exist here. I won't be returning. read more

By far the best Firehouse subs I have ever been to! Customer service was on point and that is hard to say in this day and age! Sat and ate lunch and watch 15-20 customers come in, and all were given OUTSTANDING customer service. This is such a hard thing to find nowadays that it was worth writing a review. Im not a huge fan of their food and stopped here more out of necessity to eat than desire for a Firehouse sub, but I will definitely be back! I usually have a decent experience with Firehouse but tonight I was rather disappointed. I walked in to an empty restaurant except for two other people waiting ahead of me. They had already been helped, but I was told there would be a 20 minute wait because they were backed up. I assume they were understaffed, but there were three employees behind the counter. The boy who took my order did not hand me a cup when I'd asked for a drink. I also ordered a steak and cheese, and I got a cold, soggy sub that had a spicy sauce on it that doesn't usually come on the steak and cheese. I loved Firehouse when we lived in Jacksonville and was happy when this location was built shortly after we moved to Virginia Beach. Today I took my kids there for lunch. Kids 12 and under eat free on Tuesdays, two kids per medium (or larger) combo meal. The kids get a sandwich, chips and a drink. I think there's a small up charge for a cookie or brownie to replace the chips. We were all excited about the soda fountain that lets you mix different flavored drinks. John is right though, it can take people a while to decide what they want, especially if they have little kids. Also, it can take a first-timer a minute or two to figure the thing out. The staff was mostly friendly. There was a girl training a new guy and she seemed agitated, but hey, we all have off days. Our food came out very quickly. I wasn't even done filling our drinks by the time our food came out. I love the firehouse theme and so do the kids. The TVs are a nice touch, too. My son enjoyed watching soccer while we ate. If you get a kids meal don't forget to grab them their firefighter hat. They never hand them to you and I tend to forget to grab one unless my kids mention it. read more

I stopped by tonight (7/8/17 6:40pm) and just wanted a plain sub (lettuce and tomato only) and to my surprise there was cheese on the sub. Ugh. I wish I weren't lactose intolerant but I am and will either have to give the sub away or deal with the consequences. lol I don't get what went wrong. I triple checked with the cashier about NOTHING else being on my sub and with an attitude she said "lettuce and tomato only" however her co-worker making the subs either doesn't understand simple instructions or doesn't care...either way I spent $7 for nothing. I've been to Firehouse Subs twice recently. The first time I got a Medium sized Italian sub and it was tasty but not a good deal for the price, in my opinion. I enjoyed the toppings like cherry and banana peppers. They don't offer sweet peppers. The next time I got the Medium sized Philly cheesesteak style sub. Both subs were tasty. This one was over priced as well but had a fair amount of meat. The best part both times happened to be the managers on duty. I like my subs a little wet and messy so I appreciate the cardboard box as opposed to paper wrapped around my sub. I don't like the idea that you can't see the toppings like you can at Subway but even the bread tasted much better than Subway. More meat than Subway's and more expensive, of course. I always plan to remember the employees names who are most helpful and kind. I just remember in this case they were both managers who happened to be preparing the subs as well. I think the store is clean and the employees are helpful and kind. I'd recommend their subs and plan to return to try the Smokehouse beef with cheddar sub, if memory serves me. read more

Went out to lunch with my wife, mom and daughter. We were looking for a sandwich shop and there was Firehouse Subs. It was a clear choice for an outstanding sub and a great eating environment, surrounded by firefighter stuff and an open table set up. The dining area is clean and well stocked. The staff was highly friendly and professional in their service to the customer. We were sitting around talking and they policed up our table and took a picture of our party for us. My daughter and mom loved the meatball sandwich, my wife enjoyed the Firehouse steak and cheese and I relished my turkey, bacon, ranch sub. It is an outstanding place to gather and eat great food. They also have a rack of hot sauces that is mild, but the hot is Firehouse Hot. read more

Yeah it's a chain, but their sandwiches are gobblicious..yes, I made that up. This location at Indian River and Kempsville seems to be well run and very clean. I've always received my food promptly and correctly and never have experience much of a line. I'm one of those guys that finds what he likes and then pretty much sticks to it. My favorite sandwich is the Firehouse Hero! Premium roast beef, smoked turkey and Virginia honey ham with lettuce, tomato, onions, deli mustard and a dill pickle on the side! Another thing that makes these sandwiches so phenomenal is the fact that they use Boar's Head deli meat! I also like the fact that they carry Miss Vickie's kettle cooked chips. They are a perfect pairing with the sandwich. Firehouse Subs also has a huge touch screen Coke machine that allows you to get like 30 different types of soft drink. You can mix and match like me for unlimited combinations. I prefer half Fanta orange and half Fanta peach. (I want one of these for my bedroom) I always prefer to eat in because when you carry those subs with steamed meat for long periods of time the hoagie roll gets soggy and kind of ruins the sandwich for me. Brought my family here for the first time the other day. They are so stuck on Subway and I keep telling them they have to try it. Finally, I win. So my wife and I split the smoked brisket and cheddar. She loved it! I normally get it with jalapenos but she won't eat it like that. My son tried a bite and loved it. My daughter tried it, thought it was good but she just wasn't hungry. She tore up some Cherry-Limeade though! Welcome to Firehouse! I love all of their sandwiches, but the hook and ladder is my fave. I love the spicy deli mustard. They have a row of hot sauces set up for you to try, they are labeled so you know how hot. The drink machine confuses people. Too many options and only one person can use it at a time. If you aren't getting a meatball sub you are doing it wrong. I definitely prefer the sweet and spicy. The kids eat free on tuesdays promotion is a definite winner, although I do wish they had a few more/better options available for kids. My kids usually just end up with a grilled cheese sandwich - but it's free on tuesdays so it's hard to complain too much about the options there. They have one of those coke machines with way too many options - but there's specifically has a cherry limeade that is definitely worth getting. The soda machine is the coolest drink machine ever, but the bad part is that many people take a long time deciding if they want to make diet-peach-vanilla-fanta or strawberry-cherry-diet-coke, and you end up waiting 5 minutes to make your drink. Addicted to their chicken salad sandwich! If you have ever had gourmet gang's and love it, try firehouse's. Not a fan of many chicken salad sandwich at to many places, but i LOVE theirs! A little pricer than subway, but way better in my opinion! I love that they give you a pickle with your sandwich! Love the whole firehouse theme and the fact that my kids each get a fireman hat everytime we eat here =) They have an iphone app to order so its extremely fast. I am writing a review on the samething as before . DRY BREAD. I bought a large sub and when I opened it there was dry bread . Its not hard to tell when making a sandwhich that the bread is dry . It crinkles when you touch it. I understand costs having been a restaurant manager. However their has to be a way to keep the bread from getting dry. Its disappointing to find out your bread is dry . We ordered online for pick up and when we arrived they were fighting and yelling with another customer when we walked in about her order that they made a mistake on. They were not very friendly and ran out of our soup so we had to get chili which we did not want. Came home with our order which we found out the messed up on. Stopped in to grab a sub for my grandson. His favorite is the meatball sub and since it was Monday the sub was advertised for 5.55. I was charged the full price. When I asked the server she had no idea. She asked the manager and the manager's response to me was, it is only 64 cents, as if I was supposed to say oh that's okay. My response was "so?"
