My pets are my babies. I value them more than any material item. So it says a lot that I will trust Firgrove veterinary clinic with my babies. I've had really great experiences and I drive quite a drive just to get to them even just to have my crybaby of an 85 pound middle-aged male pitbull's nails cut. Sadly, this place used to be good. However, recently, they hired young technicians that don't quite know what they're doing. My cat came in for a simple neutering, which has turned into (so far) 6 days of torture for my cat. His incision has opened countless times, with flesh falling out. He has had bloody stool, and I recently found out they prescribed too strong of drugs (controlled pain killers). My poor cat is now being seen by a couple other urgent cares. Each one has expressed horror when looking at my cat. 10 years ago, this was the best veterinary hospital in town. Now, I can sadly never go back. read more

BEWARE. Do not bring your large breed dogs here! I just had the WORST vet experience here with my cane corso puppy. I was immediately judged by the vet for having a corso breed. (She has two corsos apparently that are terrible dogs and chew up her house/car......which sounds like owner error to me) She told me she would never recommend a corso breed to anyone. She was vocally upset that he had his ears cropped and tail docked. She criticized the way they looked and how appearance wise they didn't look good. Not once did Dr. Dickerson tell me if my puppy was healthy and any helpful advice. She didn't greet me nor my dog when she entered the room. He had peed while we were in the exam room and she freaked out and yelled! As I was cleaning it up she yelled at me to not use paper towels and to use a normal towel....Mind you I'm there with my two young kids that even picked up on how rude she was being. I cannot believe me and my family were treated this way today. I left feeling so judged just for having a certain dog breed and not once felt the "compassion and family oriented atmosphere" they claim to have. I did try to speak to the manager, Tanya. Who literally just said "oh we are sorry we won't have you see that doctor again". Super helpful. I will definitely not be back. -0/10 do not recommend. read more

Our silver lab fractured his Molar. We came to Firgrove for the first time they quickly got him and scheduled surgery for the next available time. The care our our Lab received was exceptional! FINALLY... A vet and assistant who love animals. My last vet office at Value pet clinic were only interested in $$. These people were genuinely kind and interested in my dog. Kind and gentle as well as informative about my dogs ear issues. My dog was totally against anyone looking at his ears, and he is 109 lbs of strength. Instead of holding him down they were clever and gently rubbed his ears and then snuck a peek. Going to the vet is always a stresser for me as I hate to have my dogs stressed. I have to say that this was a non stresser. Also they did not keep me waiting more than 5 minutes in the room. read more

Hands down best vet I have taken a pet to!! We had an emergency last night with our pup I called and left a message with them at about 3:30am today and received a call back at around 7:30 saying I could bring my pup in right away so they could monitor him and run labs on him. I got updates throughout the day which just eased a lot of my stress! The staff is so caring and really takes their job seriously! Dr kos was so compassionate and explained everything so well! If I could give this place more than 5 stars I totally would! They are definitely there for your pets needs and not just about money like some places. Dr. Shirley has saved my 12 year-old papillon's life several times. She's been in severe respiratory distress several times from Congestive Heart Failure, requiring oxygen, and most recently was in kidney failure caused by her CHF meds and needed daily intravenous fluid treatment. I trust Dr. Shirley and the Firgrove staff with my dog's life-literally. So much so, that I make the drive from Gig Harbor for her medical care. My dog recently had surgery to remove a large mass on his back leg. It was done at a different animal hospital, NOT firgrove. His whole incision got infected shortly after the surgery as the vet never gave us any antibiotics for him. We rushed him to a 24 hour hospital a couple nights later because there was a strong odor and still lots of blood coming out 4 days later. We were given strong antibiotics and he had to stay at the hospital for 3 nights. After we picked him up he had to stay on his meds and have his bandages changed at the vet EVERY Single day. We went to firgrove vet to have his bandages changed because it was closer to our house and cheaper than any other place we've been to. Today was our 4th day in a row coming here and I had to write a review to say how amazing they've been with my pet. The first day we went they did a full examination, changed his bandages and even let us watch to see the incision (which we've never been able to see up until now). So far we have seen 3 different doctors at this vet and many different nurses and every single one has been amazing and positive. Compared to the three other Vets we've been to in our area, this one is definitely the most friendly and uplifting place we've been to. They genuinely care about your pet! Highly recommend coming here. Update: we've so far we've consistently seen Dr. Haviland, Dr. Kos and Dr. Barber. All are absolutely fantastic. Would recommend any of the three! read more

First off, I would recommend this place to anybody. The staff is extremely helpful and you can tell that everyone here has a true love for pets -and this includes everyone, starting from the people who answer my frequent phone calls, to the techs, to the vets (Dr. Barber, thank you). My husband and I came here with our Shih Tzu hoping they would be able to fix the last vet's mess after a nightmare of an experience with Banfield Pet Hospital and to be honest, we were nervous entrusting our baby to someone else after what had happened with our last vet. We had just spent close to $500 and yet our dog had just had a seizure not even two full days after Banfield lanced his anal abscess and prescribed him bogus antibiotics. He also had maggots crawling out of his wound and was so terrified by his last visit that he cowered when even I or my husband reached out to touch him. I think it is also worth mentioning that Firgrove was willing to work with us and our budget seeing as we had just flushed $500 down the toilet on our last vet. No body flinched and the quality of care was not compromised when it was mentioned. Their first and foremost concern was my pet's health and our confidence in their care. The techs here totally understood how nervous we were and coaxed us into letting him get checked out. Instead of berating me with talk of unnecessary blood work or removing any glands from my dog, the staff simply assessed the problem, told me exactly what was wrong, what they were planning on doing to fix it, and mentioned what the next step would be if Plan A failed. No one here tried to sell us anything; I wasn't asked multiple times if I was interested in microchipping my dog, getting his nails trimmed, or if I was running out of flee and tick removal at home. Our vet, Dr. Barber was fantastic. He was incredibly insightful and patient with us; answered each and every one of our questions, addressed all of our concerns, and more importantly, our pup didn't cower when he entered the room when we came in for a follow up. He is just the type of person you want caring for your pet. He prescribed the proper medication, explained what went wrong with the last vet's diagnosis and treatment, and that same day, my baby ate, drank and pooped for the first time in three days. His abscess is now almost completely healed; I have a second follow up with Dr. Barber on Friday, and am happy to say that my pup now eats, sleeps and plays like usual. read more

I recently adopted an 8 mo old kitten from the Humane Society (Mocha). She got a cat cold shortly after I brought her home (woke me up with machine-gun cat sneezes on night 2). I was going to wait for it to pass on its own but by day 4 the poor cat was sneezing so violently that blood started to appear! I called Firgrove and they cleared out a spot for me to come right in. They greeted me at the entrance and asked for me to keep my pet in the car with me since cat colds are super contagious to other felines. We didn't have to wait long before they brought us into a checkup room with a vet who didn't own cats at home so she didn't have to worry about spreading the cold. She was brilliant. Absolutely adored our cat and made us feel at ease while they checked her out. They gave me some drops and medicine for our new kitten. I was surprised that it cost around $150, but not enough to knock off a star. I'm just new to being a cat owner so I didn't know what to expect or if that was the normal price for this type of care. Either way, I'm very happy I found this place and feel comfortable bringing the newest member of our family back here! read more

I've taken my pets to this clinic several times now, I really like the vet and the assistants are really nice. However, there's a blonde front desk lady that just seems to have a poor attitude, she's never friendly up front or on the phone. It also doesn't seem to matter when my appointment time is, I have to wait at least 15 minutes in the waiting room. Even when taken back, it's still a long wait to have someone come in. I think the shortest appointment I had was an hour, just for a kitty vaccine and post op. Usually I'm not one to write reviews but I called two places today to schedule an appointment, Firgrove and another place that had WAY better customer service. Too bad too, Firgrove vet is super close to home, but rather see if the grass is greener somewhere else. read more

I have been a client of this vet for over 15 years, when I first started bringing my pets to them they were great over the years their service has become extremely so-so. The reasons I chose this vet at the beginning is they told me if the need arose they would come to the house to help my pet over the rainbow bridge, well they reneged on that, their prices increased immensely, it should not take 3-4 weeks to get an appointment. I have become very disenchanted with their services. They also prolonged the whole not being able to go inside with your pet. Would I recommend them ? 15 years ago yes. Today not so much. They also have had a lot of turnover with personnel which makes me think there is poor management now. read more

Firgrove Vet is hands down the best Veterinary place in Puyallup. I've taken all my animals to Firgrove for the last 25 years. Dr Barber is to me, the very best for dogs and his wife is a close 2nd. Dr Barber saved my dachshunds life when she was about 4 years old. We woke up to find our dog bleeding out of her mouth. Raced her to the vet and Dr Barber knew right away what was wrong. My dog had a very rare, nearly always fatal disease. Had he not known of the disease my dachshund would have died! Dr Barber has been there when we've had to put our cats down due to old age. Most recently, I brought my 16 year old Bengal because the noises he was making from his throat were not normal. When we got to the vet, of course he stopped making that noise but luckily I had video'd it on my phone. Dr Shirley (owner of Firgrove over 40 years) took one look at my video and knew right away that he had polyps in his throat. She did a quick non-invasive procedure on him to confirm. I was so dang happy, my Bengal's still going strong! We are just keeping an eye on it to make sure it's not cancerous. The place is very clean, the staff are incredibly friendly, they've taken me at last minute for emergencies, they do everything they can to keep costs down. What more could you want?! read more

I can't say enough good things about Firgrove. We have been taking all of our animals there for years. Dr. Kos and Dr. Barber are our favorites but they are all good. They are genuinely kind to our animals and us. We recently had a terminal illness with our lab that they managed with so much compassion. Even on Lilly's final day, Dr. Barber offered options, support and honestly a very kind goodbye experience. My only negative would be new hires at the front counter. Sometimes they don't meet the quality of care as those that know how the clinic is run. More training upfront would be beneficial. The ladies who have been there a long time are awesome! read more

Only come here if you want to face a litany of administrative and service issues. This vet is disorganized and it shows in the way they handle their patients and clients. I used this vet from 2009 to 2021. During that time they have had near constant blunders ranging from the minor but somewhat annoying to the serious and extremely rude and inconvenient. Everything from being incapable of returning phone calls to the correct number to completely forgetting about me in a room while they had my cat for nearly two hours to scheduling me for an appointment at 8am on the weekend and then waiting for me to show up to tell me that they had made a mistake and were not going to honor my appointment. The staff is rude, unhelpful, and clearly couldn't care less when they step on your toes. On the day they forgot about me for nearly two hours I didn't receive so much as an apology or an explanation of why they'd left me for so long, they also never concluded my appointment but just sort of rushed me out of the room, clearly embarrassed. I have a shy ex feral cat who doesn't do well being handled by strangers, while at the office for an appointment with one of my other pets I asked for help finding a vet that could offer at home vaccine services because I thought that this may be best for my shy cat. The vet was unforgivably rude, they could not offer me those services from this office which I understood, but she also would not recommend any other vet that did have that service and kept insisting that I just bring her in and "see how it goes" (this from the vet that has been too scared to touch my cat the last time I brought her in) when I said I didn't think that was a good idea and reiterated that I thought a home visit vaccine would be best the vet responded by saying, literally word for word, "You just need to get that cat vaccinated as soon as possible. When she bites someone they will cut her head off for rabies testing." Yep, that's right, when she couldn't bully me into using their services she tried to scare me by talking about cutting off my cat's head. When I was fed up with them the first time and tried to leave and find another vet I was trying to get my elderly pets scripts transferred. Suddenly there were a bunch of very expensive appointments and tests that needed to be done before the office could send that information anywhere. They flat out refused to do so without these expensive appointments. These appointments were never needed before (or since then) and no one could explain to me why they were suddenly needed the moment they would no longer be able to profit off of me anymore. Its pretty clear they had every intention of using the expense as a way to prevent me from changing care providers. I was broke at the time and was scared my pets wouldn't receive their meds, so I stayed because I felt like I didn't have any other choice. I have finally had enough of the bullshit with these incompetent, dishonest, rude, and greedy people. I have the money to have my pets seen by a new vet and can afford to have them all seen as new by a new vet with no help from these jerks, seeing as it is the only way to get away from them. read more

I would give it zero stars if I could. I had an emergency bleeding wound on an animal and I ran out of quick clot. Called them because they are closer than running to petco. I called, they said they had it. I get there. Walk in. Shuffled back to my car, waited 5 minutes, they come and tell me they wont sell it to me because I'd never had an animal there. So basically they said tough you have an emergency, tough you need it, buy it elsewhere. Absolutely incredible. read more

The last 2 times we have visited Firgrove was for our Yorkie to be seen. Brutus was treated with care and love. No one was pushy and even took the time to hear all my concerns as I was a new PAWrent. I was given some great advice and suggestions, front counter staff was polite and respectful. I have had no issues or have not experienced any thing out of concern. I am sad to read the other reviews so I encourage you to give it a try and make your own informed decision, I am glad we did Dr. Greene is great we love her gentle nature and Brutus appreciates that as well because he is a very shy pup. read more

I will never go here again, after being with them for 8 years. A few years ago, my cat had cancer and was told that it was only in her kidney. So, I went through the expense of having her kidney removed only to find out that it was also in her throat, which was why she wasn't eating (they also did a barium swallow without my approval and still made me pay for it). I had to put her to sleep... the sweetest little kitty ever. I now have a dog who has terrible allergies. The prescription allergy medicine is extremely expensive. I found an online pharmacy that had it less expensively than buying it at Firgrove. They have approved this medication for the past two years and now all of a sudden, they won't approve it "because it's unethical to use an online pharmacy". They just try to gouge the customer. Do yourself a favor and find another vet. read more

My husband and I came her on September 8, 2016 with our female cat who was diagnosed with cancer on September 1, 2016 at a different Vet. The reason why we brought her here was to get a second opinion. Her back right leg and paw became really swollen, we took her to a different vet, where they took a biopsy. A few days after that she completely stopped eating drinking and using the litter box. She developed a very large scab where they took the biopsy, she even somehow developed open wounds that were infected and dripping puss. She even lost 4 pounds in 3 weeks. So coming to Firgrove they were able to see us. The vet and the vet techs were very nice and compassionate. Unfortunately the vet recommended that she be humanly euthanized. My husband and I already talked about that, but we wanted to fight for her and give her a fighting chance. But the vet felt around her abdomen and their was a good chance that the cancer has spread to her abdomen. He even said that he could see the spirit in her to fight, but her body was unable too. He did say we could try to help her feel better but it would of cost us more then we could afford and there was no way of telling if she would come out better or we would find her already passed away. When we did make the decision to put her down it was the hardest decision we have ever had to make. Especially for me, since she was my first cat ever. All the staff was very understanding and gave us all the time we needed and to spend as much time with her. We did decide to have her cremated and we will be able to bring her home when they call and say she is ready to come home. One of the vet techs stood next to her petted her and loved on her and we were telling stories about her. Very nice people who care about animals. After all was said and done my husband and I were hugged by most of the staff. What helped us a lot was the fact that they were able to work with us financially. I highly recommend this Veterinary Hospital. I will be bringing my other pets here. Update: My husband and I received a very nice card from them telling us that they are sorry and sad that we had to let our girl go. It was very thoughtful of them to do that. read more
