    Nine Locks

This was an excellent spot to hit before or even after your flight! The summer menu had amazing food pictures that we ended up ordered all our items from it. Lobster everything! And the lobster on everything was very nice and good portions/chunks of lobster. The cold lobster roll with that fresh lettuce was one of my favourite ones from the whole trip out East! Service was exceptionally fast and the waitress understood we had a flight to catch so she didn't doodle putting in our order and clearing the bill efficiently too. And the food did come out fast which was super appreciated considering this place was packed! Added in a Nine Locks brew which was a lovely beer while we enjoyed the cool decor. I'm glad we had time to hit this place before our flight.

    On the Dole $11

Got to the Halifax airport early, and this was the only sit down restaurant open at the time. There were fast food and coffee shops open, but that's not what we were looking for. I wasn't expecting much based on the reviews, but we were pleasantly surprised. They were serving breakfast only. I got "On the Dole" for $11, which was a great deal and a decent sized breakfast - 2 eggs, bacon, tater tots and multigrain toast with PB&J! Everything was yummy! Hubby got the breakfast tacos and said they were delish. Service is friendly and fast! The booths and chairs are super comfy. This is a solid breakfast choice when traveling through the Halifax airport.

If you're traveling out of Halifax Airport, not a bad spot to eat. They have lots of seating and it can get quite busy, but service is great. My friend and I both ordered the lobster roll with tater tots/fries and a Caesar. Decent sized portions and decent value for money, especially for something within an airport. They make the Caesar with either Maple or Habanero infused vodka (both made locally in NS) which gives it a unique spin especially if you like your Caesars spicy. Overall a good spot for a quick meal before your flight.

Lobster BLT with kettle chips $20.

Food that doesn't suck and isn't grossly overpriced at an airport? This was a first for me, lol. What a pleasant surprise. I think this pub is part of the Firkin Pubs chain. My husband and I were waiting for our flight back home to Ottawa and we wanted to have something to eat and decided on the Firkin and Flyer. We both got the Lobster BLT ($20). My husband got his with kettle chips (his first choice was tater tots, but they had ran out), while I got mine with a garden salad, with the dressing on the side. I was thrilled when they brought out my plate and I saw that the garden salad was a real mesclun mix, with no iceberg or romaine in sight. Yay! It also had cucumbers and diced tomatoes. The dressing was a balsamic vinaigrette. The dressing was a bit oily, but I used just a tiny amount so it was ok. Vegetables were fresh. The Lobster BLT was delicious! It has real chunks of lobster mixed in a mayo sauce with crispy bacon slices, lettuce and tomatoes. I was so happy that the lobster sandwich did not have any fake crab filler mixed in. Yeah, I know, no self-respecting restaurant should ever serve a lobster roll with fake crab in it, but it happens all the time in Ottawa :( So $20 for a tasty lobster sandwich with a side salad with real lettuces and not "wannabee salad ingredients" like iceberg, at an airport? Wow! Service wasn't the friendliest or most attentive. I finished my water part way through the meal and placed the empty glass by the edge of the table for our server to see, and she walked by several times but did not refill it :( Her mission seemed to be to get people in and out as fast as possible. I guess in an airport environment, this is the name of the game. But whatever, I'm just glad that I didn't pay $20 for fake crab and iceberg lettuce, lol. Yeah, my expectations at airports are low, but now they have been elevated. The food and prices at the Firkin and Flyer are in line with what I would expect of a pub not in an airport. Thank you for not gouging us and not compromising on quality and quantity just because you have a captive audience at the airport (I'm looking at you, D'Arcy McGee's at the Ottawa airport!!). Thank you for being a regular Firkin Pub that just happens to be at the airport.

    Lobster Poutine

I got the lobster poutine, I was a bit disappointed. It wasn't bad but it wasn't that good either. It was $25, service was pleasant and fast. French fries would have been better if they were the classic potato cut fries.

Meh. Nothing special for the price. Server wasn't especially friendly. Could be worse.

Super busy but the crew amazingly keep up with it, big portion & pretty reasonable price for airport restaurants. Nice music too! Love it!

She was laughing at the multiple old men at the bar. When we finally got her attention her words were 'you look confused' and I was - there was no sign about where to sit. Once seated my boyfriend got the engine room burger and ceaser salad - the lettuce on the bun was literally browning. I got the turkey dinner daily special and aside from the black hair on top of my turkey, it was dry and has absolutely no flavour. We waited a really long time for a refill. The atmosphere was grungy and definitely didn't feel welcoming. The most attention we received was from the multiple flies around us and our food. I wouldn't recommend this place and definitely won't be back.

But inside it's a largeish, busy pub with a dance floor, sports on the TVs, and - probably - lots of busy locals enjoying themselves. It's on the country pub side of things, with lots of wood, neon beer signs, that sort of thing. But the menu is big. My caesar salad was good; my chicken wings (they were on special) were just OK, a little on the thin side. Fast, efficient service. Seems full of friendly locals.

Our main course was crispy cod tails on lemon risotto topped with a terrific sauce of caramelized corn. The sauce was spicy and made the dish. For desert we had a lovely blueberry concoction with the unappealing name of "blueberry grunt"! This wasn't foodie food but super fresh ingredients prepared simply and beautifully. After dinner we moved into the main dining room for a terrific musician playing mostly NS folk music. All in all it was a great evening. Great food, great music, friendly people. We left a 10% tip despite slow service. The other table of four had been served, had eaten, and left by 7:05. I ordered fish and chips. Batter bit thick so uncooked inner dough in few places but fish was delicious. The chips??? I'm just going to post a picture showing total - quantity minus one chip - couldn't eat them! Cole slaw delicious. If you go before a show give them two hours! I honestly think the order was held up. Maybe lots of orders ahead?? but that other table had plenty of time! And they were literally less than 5 minutes at most ahead of us!

Even though we knew about where it was, we walked right past the beautiful two-story historic house initially. We knew by taking a look at the website they do not accept reservations, which was fine with us. We were, however, going on a Friday night. On walking into the main entry, that space was packed wall-to-wall. Within a few short minutes, one of the staff greeted us. They don't exactly have a formal wait list here, from what I could tell. The staff member offered us the drinks menu and asked if we'd like to order something while we waited on a table. We ordered up a couple of pints, then looked around for some open space to stand. They have two standing bar rails, one in the main area near the bar itself and another one in the middle dining area. This place has about the most creative layout of booths and tables I've ever seen. They do have an outdoor patio out back, but we didn't take a look at that. They have quite a few very comfy two-person booths around the interior. It appeared the way the wait list worked was that they either have a phenomenal memory, or they actually use the bar tab you open to work like a wait list. It seems to really be more about how many you have in your party, and the exact size of any tables/booths that open up. We might have waited about 30 minutes or so for our table for two up in the front of the main dining room. Every single person on the wait staff here is amazing. Let me just get that out of the way. The beer list is great, loaded up with so many good local and Nova Scotia craft beer options. The food menu is what really makes this place special, though. We were on vacation, so we may have a tendency for our eyes to be bigger than our stomachs can handle. There was just so many amazing looking dishes. We started out with a pickle jar, fried taters, and the tomatoes appetizers. I have to say, and my wife agrees, the tomatoes dish was the best of everything we had. Its made up of sliced cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, shallots, capers, and garlic chips. All that is sitting on top of creme fraiche. By the time you're finishing the dish, you start thinking about a straw to finish up that creme fraiche. Good grief, that was so good. Don't pass on the fried taters, though. Those seemed to be mashed potatoes formed into rectangular big fries, cooked almost like panko and served with horseradish sour cream. After all that, we could only muster splitting the deli style chop salad with cold water shrimp on it. Our great waitress talked us into an order of the brown bread, a very soft kind of Irish soda bread I believe. That bread just melts in your mouth. If you decide to venture out to The Narrows, you're in for a total experience. You'll feel like you stepped back in time to a real British pub... the house must be from somewhere around the mid 1800s. Every room is warm and cozy, with beautiful woodwork and curious antiques in all sorts of nooks and crannies. You may have quite a long wait depending on the size of your party and how busy the place is, but trust me... its worth every minute.
