I am beyond disappointed with American First Credit Union and will never bank with them again…read more American First was supposed to pull my loan payment from an outside bank account and apply it directly to my loan. Instead, they incorrectly set it up to pull from my American First checking account, which only had enough funds to cover my final bills as I was in the process of moving banks. Because of their error, my account was repeatedly overdrafted and I was charged daily overdraft fees. These fees added up to well over $200, even though this situation was completely preventable and caused by American First's mistake--not mine. When I called for help, I was refunded only $30, which doesn't even come close to covering the fees they charged. I also asked about hardship options such as payment reduction, interest reduction, or a reasonable deferment. The only option offered was a past-month deferment, which made no sense and provided no actual relief. What made this experience worse was the lack of empathy and support. The representatives I spoke with did not make me feel like they were trying to help resolve the issue. Even at the end of my calls--while I was explaining that I couldn't make a payment--I was being pressured to make one anyway. Credit unions are supposed to support their members, especially when the problem was caused by the institution itself. American First failed on every level. I will be closing my accounts and warning my family and friends to avoid banking here. I am still seeking a full refund of the overdraft fees that were charged due to their error.
