What a grand campground!! It was a gift from TVA in 1958 to the county for public use…read more Not only was there a campground, there was a day use beach & playground! We just spent 3 nights with two other families there. One family has two littles, one couple had their young grandson, and we are part time empty nesters. There is something for everyone!!! Lots of water for our kayaks, other's jet skis and of course several boat docks! The RV sites are good size, with water & electric. Tent camping sites looked pretty good as well. It is a truly hidden jewel so close to Chattanooga & Dayton TN. Been living in East TN for 21 years and never knew about this wonderful spot. We will be back!

I have visited the park numerous times over the years while I lived here, but had never camped or stayed in the camping area. The park is well-maintained, at least the campsites are. They have easy access and are nice and level with good fire pits in picnic tables for each one. Being from the area, it was not a surprise to me to have the Lake level low when I was here in March because I know that TVA lowers the lake every winter for flood control And raises it back up in April so the water level didn't bother me. The check-in experience online was simple and straightforward. The staff at the range station are outstanding, very personable and friendly. I stayed for a week and enjoyed myself. The only downside was the showers and the bath houses. They are a little rundown and need to be upgraded. Other than that. It's a nice campground clean and well kept. People were friendly and it's a beautiful area to hang out and just enjoy the outdoors.

The front of the frig had stuff spilled on it , the burners on the stove had crusty stuff around them, dust on furniture tables was heavy. Towels in master bedroom were shreds, literally. My husband & I went to the local dollar general & bought towels & washcloths. The lights on the dock did not work. Outdoor furniture was so bad you didn't dare sit on it. The neighbors dogs came over everyday & pooped right where you walk to the dock. I left my brand new IPad there plugged in, emailed property host within 6 hours of us leaving. No response for 2 days from her. She wasn't concerned. I would have paid reward for it. I feel that cleaning crew is enjoying it. These people should not be in rental business!

They deny that I ever stayed at one of their properties - such is the level of their deception. Do not use this business, because their lying tactics and customer service are absurdly terrible. In a dispute with my credit card company, they made up a few pieces of evidence to try to prove their case, though luckily for me, my credit card company took my viewpoint when I presented them with the actual facts and evidence. Incredibly deceitful business.

All of the workers were so friendly and helpful here. The hike at the very top was perfect- about a mile or so, the scenic lookout is about halfway through so you can take a break if you need. There's a good amount of elevation to get your heartbeat going but then it calms down after awhile. At the outlook, it would be easy to sit and enjoy the few for a long time. It's stunning. You can also take a fork in the path to visit the Fort that's here (thus named Fort Mountain). There are some info signs explaining the mysterious origins of the fort and it's pretty interesting.

Fort Mountain State Park is one of few favorites places to visit, especially in the spring or in…read morethe fall. The scenery is simply picturesque. Despite the harsh cold winds of winter, we had the sun which made it bearable and our hike was splendid on the day we visited. Our first stop had to be the visitor center to get a new annual pass & patches. The attendants helped us secure the pass that best matched our needs. The visitor center has restrooms and a gift store. For my girlfriend, it's always difficult to resist the items --- t-shirts, stuffed animals, historical books, camping supplies, snacks --- they sell there. If I am not mistaken, I believe they also sell firewood and ice for those looking to camp. If you need a map of the park, it can be found here as well. We then headed to the lake to hike the trail that circles it. It's an easy trail, so it makes for a nice walk for chatting and stopping to admire the views of the lake and mountainside. The beach at the lake is relatively small, but the facilities there are nice, with boat rentals, playground, picnic tables, and putt-putt golf. Im assuming a lot of these services are seasonal because we saw no one using them. I did like that there was a ramp that led from the parking lot to the beach for visitors that may have mobility issues. We hiked several different trails, and all were well blazed. The trails that led to fire tower and the stone wall had informational signs. Unfortunately the fire tower can only be viewed from the outside. I would love to see the view from the top! But if it's views you are interested in, checkout the overlook trail! The view is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! We also did the Big Rock Nature Trail (trailhead is near the lake dam). The 3/4-mile trail led to a beautiful waterfall. We didn't touch the Gahuti Trail this time, but we plan to do it next time we come back; it's challenging but very beautiful from what I have read about the trail. I would recommend it if you have a day for a hiking adventure. Snacks and water are required. The cabins and cottages all look well maintained from the outside and are located in beautiful areas of the park. We didn't check out the campground, but it's near the lake, but Fort Mountain State Park seems to have something for everyone!

Ruby Falls has been on my "must see" list for years and every time it pops up in a video on my…read moreinstagram account, I'm more determined to come for a visit. Finally, was able to do it last month. Purchased tickets in advance and showed up with enough time to shop in the gift shop and use the restroom. They have a very nice facility here with plenty of parking, a cafe, a large gift shop, and an observation tower. Spotless inside and well-run. Also, a penny press! Our tour guide, Chuck I believe, was wonderful. Extremely friends and funny and knowledgable about the cave but also about Chattanooga and the surrounding area. They are really doing a lot of tours. Since you walk 0.5 miles to the waterfall underground, it's a bit of a slog to keep getting to the side so groups of 30-40 can go by (tight space). We probably had to do this about 5-6x during our tour. The falls are amazing, but, walking the half mile through the cave and seeing all the other formations was wonderful too. There really are a lot of examples of formations and some unique ones like Angel's Wings, Western Sunset and Leo's Passage. Our group was large, but we had a good time and everyone was polite. The only thing I was disappointed in was that the waterfall wasn't illuminated for us to walk up to it - instead, we walked in in the dark and all crowded around it - so, when the lights came on, I wasn't able to get an approach or long shot of it in full length. They do have first tours of the day and adult-only tours so, if I come back again, I may look into that.

It was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. I was a little skeptical about whether my younger kids would be able to handle the walk, but it ended up being very manageable. We just stayed attentive and reminded them not to touch the formations, just as our guide instructed. I also thought the timed viewing at Ruby Falls was a really smart idea. I initially wasn't sure how I'd feel about the time limit, but the coordinated lighting gives everyone enough time to take photos, enjoy the waterfall, and then make room for the next group. It kept everything moving smoothly without taking away from the experience. My kids absolutely loved it, and so did I! We also enjoyed browsing the gift shop and picking up a few souvenirs to remember our visit. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and we'd love to come back the next time we're in the Chattanooga area.
