Lets face it we all love Chinese food, from Generals Tsu's chicken which will make diabetics cringe, to fried rice and beyond it's a comfort food for us. First China is located in a very accessible area of town two stores down from Harris Teeter on Old Monroe. That said their lobby isn't much to look at as if they don't want diners. So, if you're wanting to belly up to a table and get your carbs on, no dice hombre. They packed my meal very well and it was still so hot when I got home, I almost burnt my tongue (I live literally behind Harris Teeter). The shrimp egg rolls were really good! Crunchy, not soaked in grease, and flavorful. The Wonton soup is pretty boring with a barely flavored broth and too much noodle to filling ratio. The same goes for the egg drop soup which I believe used the same broth? Not sure but both were boring. The Crab Rangoons were fairly standard, not bad but not outstanding either. Now onto the main courses! I'm going to start with my least favorable item the pork fried rice. While the rice was perfectly cooked and the meat was plentiful, the execution was off. I almost think the cap from the soy sauce broke off b/c the rice was seriously dark and the soy flavor was off the charts. I didn't enjoy it and this is the third Chinese restaurant to cook this way. I'm not sure if that's the style now, but I don't care for it. As for the protein, I was expecting Char Siu for pork. For those who don't know that's the pork with the red ring and very tasty with notes of Asian goodness. The pork I got was just added to a hot work and not cooked with traditional Chinese methods. Next up was the Lo Mein. The noodles tasted stale to me as if they've been laying around for a while or in some package. Moreover, I wish restaurants would be more consistent as the noodles weren't round but like a rectangle if looking at it from the top. While this may sound trivial the shape of food makes a different in flavor. For instance, elbow macaroni doesn't taste like spaghetti even though they're the same ingredients. That's because it hits the taste buds differently and tricks our minds into thinking it's a flavor rather than texture. Finally, and I noticed this off the bat, is great Chinese restaurants have a slight smoky flavor to Lo Mein and fried rice among some other dishes. This is subtle yet can really elevate the dish and it comes from a wok that's been seasoned for years. I know I'm nitpicking here but these things really make a difference. The chicken Mei Fun is a simple dish yet very affective. Plenty of green onion, bok-choy, onion & eggs along with thin rice noodles and plenty of meat. The flavor is on point with what I'm accustom to having however I do like carrots in mine. Overall, not bad. Overall, First China isn't inspiring yet not the worst I've had. My family thought it was ok, but when splurging on carbs I want a delicious endeavor as I don't gorge too often. Also, I wish they'd add a Beef Chow Fun to the menu as I have to go to Matthews to get it. The people are nice but it's a very quick interaction so I guess that's good. In summary I'd say it's mid. read more

We've been eating here a long , but this is my first review because tonight's dinner was do good. The hot and sour soup was probably the best I've had in years in the Charlotte area. It was amazing! Hot, and the brirh was thinner than what moat restaurants make..it was SOUP not gel! The Singapore Noodles were delish! Plenty of chicken,pork and shrimp. Very large order and very tasty...nice curry flavor too. My son had the beef lomein and husband had orange chicken. Both were very good and both had left overs. Pile of food good price. BUT what I ate had very little flavoring or spice. Most people are wary of too hot a spice, but the way to compensate is to make things very flavorful. The Chinese do this with lots of fresh garlic and newly grated ginger. My noodles had neither. Or you could add fish sauce and hoisin sauce. Or you could add toasted sesame oil. Spicy oil possibly? My shrimp was basically uncooked. Fortunately the market these days allows vendors to sell shrimp in good condition with little chance of contamination. I think I might have liked the shrimp at least a little cooked. Many restaurants will sear quickly their shrimp on a griddle to add flavor but only on one side so they do not get rubbery. I brought home my noodles half eaten with the idea that I could improve of the flavor here at home. My friend had a rice stir fry dish and she was happy with it, but I doubt she knows that is was missing true Chinese flavors. Her rice was orange with possibly turmeric added but again no real flavor. It was quick and cheap. I feel sure many people will be happy with take out quickly made and reasonably priced. Ok so this place has been around since before I moved into my house 15 years ago. Nothing lasts this long if it's terrible. I love the mushu pork here and my daughter hates the lo mein here. At another place it's vice versa so I'm going to stay it's really up to your taste buds. But I can tell you that the service is always very good and I have never waited long for a take out order. I'm giving it 4 stars because it's got some seating but it's right in the middle of all the activities with people coming in and out and you get your own food and bring it to the table yourself. It reminds me of a break room at work. So it's more of a take out place. Give it a try! It's a long established place and you just might like it! read more

Went to First China this past Friday evening. The line was extremely long and I waited approximately 10 minutes to just place my order. Then I waited for another 10 minutes to receive my food. There were approximately 4 people working in the back and one girl in the front juggling between phone orders, walk in orders, and pick ups. I would suggest maybe another person working in the front to help move things along. Now to the food itself. I thought the rice was a little on the dry side and wasn't easy to eat with chopsticks. Secondly, the sesame chicken itself wasn't all that impressive. The breading was good and fried properly. However, the sauce that the chicken was in was bland and kind of flavorless as it offered no kick or tang. The eggroll was good and crispy. This Chinese place is ok and I will be coming back and keeping this as one of my options as this is one of the Closest Chinese places to me. read more

The restaurant is conveniently located in Sun Valley next to Harris Teeter (big plus). The restaurant seemed clean, but there was an employee (possibly the owner) in the dining room eating. That, of course, is not an issue, but when you're picking up your bowel and slurping your meal, in my opinion, it's not acceptable around clients. As for the food, I'll be very candid, I'm a harsh critic for Chinese food. In other words, I'm picky with flavor. I ordered the Szechuan spicy Chicken with fried rice and egg roll (lunch special), and a side of shrimp fried rice. The flavor of the Szechuan Chicken was very good and had a good zing with the spiciness. However, the fried rice was not very good. It appears that it's Mexican yellow rice, and it was flavorless. Additionally, the bowl had lots of rice at the bottow with very little of the good stuff on top. The cost for this "special" is $7.75. As you can probably imagine of my comment of the shrimp fried rice, it was not good either. The total with tax was $20. I would bypass this place if you're not too finicky like me. There's another Chinese restaurant in Matthews I would prefer to go to, and another one in Charlotte. If it's not for the traffic, I would go there every time I have a taste to indulge in Chinese. read more

Ordered off if Doordash - got steamed dumplings and a beef and broccoli combo. The dumplings were just OK, but the dough on the dumplings was SUPER thick. The beef and broccoli combo? It went right in the trash. The rice was yellow and dry and the beef and broccoli had a horrible smell to it. I took one bite and spit it back out. This is our go-to spot for Chinese food. We've never had anything here that we didn't like. However, I am holding back a five star rating due to some minor mishap typically happening. Always being told 5-10 is unrealistic. If you're told this, count on more like 15-20 min for food to be ready. Many times items have been forgotten from our order. Unfortunately we've made the mistake several times not checking the order before leaving the restaurant. I will say that management will make good on what they might have forgotten by making a note in their system so they can make it up to you on the next order. If it weren't for the fantastic tasting food, this recurring problem would prevent me from coming back. Good thing the food is great! read more

Ok. Where do I begin? We decided to order for dinner on Sunday night 11/8 while we were shopping in the area. We went in and there was one tall guy cooking on the grill. He just looked at us without greeting. Then he looked over and asked if we were ready to order. We ordered. He was rude and short with us then just turned and walked away after he gave us the change. I asked how long. 15 min. We walked to the Harris Teeter for a couple things. Got back. Order was ready. He handed me the bag and I said "thank you" and he responded with "yea," turned around and walked away. I understand that there might be a language barrier but rudeness is rudeness no matter what language you speak. I went to my car, which was parked right in front, then I saw something very strange. I could see, through the window, into the back of the kitchen, a man. A man squatting, under a table, behind a bucket, aggressively eating what looked like a bowl of rice with chopsticks. This might sound crazy. And it was. So I recorded it. It gets worse. We got home and when my daughter lifted the bag a brown liquid was dripping from it. I took the bag then the entire bottom of the bag gave out and our entire order was on the floor of my not so inexpensive car which had just been detailed about a week ago. Then we noticed the smell. A smell of rancid garlic sauce. The smell hit us like a ton of bricks. I brought everything inside and opened my moo shy pork and my entire house filled with that terrible smell. Some had dripped on my jeans and boots. We had to immediately change our clothes. We could not eat any of that food. $27 down the drain but it was not worth it to me to go back into that "restaurant." So we ordered a pizza and threw that shit out. So if I could give zero stars I would. This was an irritating experience for me. So annoying. I just wanted to go home and watch The Walking Dead but instead had to deal with cleaning all this shit up then wait for a pizza. I've only been there a few times before and though it's not the greatest Chinese take out, the young women that works there was always friendly and the food was edible. Seriously your food was delicious - really was - we ordered about $75 worth for 4 of us, we sampled multiple dishes. They were all pretty good! My main issue is the 3 day attack of the lava snakes that followed. I could never be too far away from the powder room.
