Goals gym is not an ordinary, gym. It's huge it's clean. It smells good. They seem to have every piece of available equipment possible to give you the kind of body you want. I started going several months ago with my son who thought I could benefit from regular workouts at my age. At my age, I wasn't looking to be on the cover of any magazine, but frankly, I just wanted to feel better and stronger. And I can honestly say that after several months of regular workouts, I feel great. And when you can do it in a place that is so large and comfortable Will helpful staff. It makes everything really easy. Once you get into the routine, you'll actually enjoy it and you'll look forward to your next your next visit. Full disclosure.- I am not a gym rat and never will be. There are plenty of people in the gym, but you'll hardly ever wait for a piece of equipment. I noticed the common courtesy of almost all the users cleaning their workout equipment their handles in the seats in the seatbacks with this infected when they were finished with their use of the machine I thought that was really indicative of the kind of people using the gym and taking care of it and making sure that other people comfortable after they use. Very classy if you want a trainer, you can hire one if you can go with a buddy and have them show you how to use the equipment, but if you get stuck, there are staff members on hand to help you with any questions that you have. I have put off writing this for some time, but I hope the complaints listed here will help foster some change at this gym. If there were a gym in the area that offered similar amenities, equipment, and a comparable price point (even if membership was $10-15 extra per month), then I would cancel my membership immediately. I will start with what I witnessed a week or so ago, which was my last straw. Firstly, on a Thursday or Friday around 4:00 PM, I found the cleaner SLEEPING on the couch, front and center, for all the members to see. I'm sure the management can find the video footage of it. Absolutely ridiculous. Then, the following Saturday, I walked into the gym to scan in as usual, only to find the two front desk attendants on their phones, conversing with each other. They left the scanner on the top of the desk and did not even bother acknowledging my presence. I had planned to ask them to change my billing information, but I didn't bother after seeing how little they seemed to care. Regarding the front desk attendants, do they actually do anything? I never see them walking around the gym; spray bottles and paper towel dispensers are always empty. The equipment is always broken or malfunctioning, without even a note on it (this is particularly true of the treadmills). The men's locker room is a disaster. I often find myself using the bathroom provided by the mall around the corner because it gives me genuine anxiety walking into the locker room. The floors are black from being dirty all day, the sinks are dripping with dirty water from those washing their hands, and the bathroom stalls have various bodily fluids (yes, I mean VARIOUS) coating the floors. On the topic of paper towels and spray bottles, I have been there for days, and in some cases, weeks, in a row, and the same dispenser is either out of paper towels or broken, while the spray bottle(s) remain empty. Today, 11/01, there was blood wiped on the wall in the functional room. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING AND A HUGE HEALTH HAZARD. I'll try to include a picture of it. My last complaint isn't one directly at the gym or its employees, but at the members. There are so many old and creepy men who frequent this gym. A lot of my female friends report being stared at for an uncomfortable amount of time, followed to their vehicles, and just constantly bothered by these creeps. I see it a lot myself as well. Old, creepy, sad men stare at me at the gym when I am simply trying to exist as a person of color. I've even had confrontations with members in the parking lot. These creepy, older men and their behavior are disgusting and have no place in a fitness space. I'm hoping some changes will be made, but I seriously doubt it. If you are reading this and have made it this far, please choose a different gym if you can afford it. read more

Staff here is the worst of any gym I've been to in my 34 years. There's these two blonde girls who are insane. One is super aggressive like she wants to fight with me, god only knows why. The dudes are straight up perverted which is weird because I'm the type of lesbian that dresses in men's clothes with a men's haircut and everything so maybe they're gay too. At this point I'm basically here for the sauna and because I feel like why should I leave when I'm the one being harassed, can't you just discipline/fire the staff? If you move or decide to stop going there for some reason, get ready to jump through hoops and get upset with the very clearly purposeful bureaucracy and insanely long "processing time." I really tried to be nice in my last review. I've been on/off going here for 2+ years now and noticed something odd about this gym. People who go there always seem to think that they're being stared at (ie: their gaze detection is broken) and have confrontational issues. Just because someone has eyes doesn't mean they're locked on you. Unclear why people don't approach each other about this kind of thing. I don't know, it's weird to zone out on a treadmill then get looks like people want to set your house on fire for working out the moment you get off. You can see the behavior set of a couple of people who go here on a regular basis that they just don't like eyes on them, which would bring up the question of even leaving the house. The front desk used to be chill, a few staff are worth their weight, others use the time to be anti-social and watch anime (you know who you are). I used to be confused about why this place got shit on for "bad staff,"and now I see it. Otherwise, they recently upgraded equipment, which still goes out of order on a regular basis, and one weight machine hasn't been fixed since the start of October. (It's Thanksgiving week [US] at the time of writing for time frame context.) Their weight machines are basic and would be great for basic body building. It still feels like they're missing a lot here, given they've recently upgraded. EDIT: It's also a weird use of real estate considering other gyms seem to have better use of floor space considering size. The bathrooms are okay but sparce. The bathrooms the mall around them are almost better/cleaner. The water machine is regularly broken or scuffed beyond significant use. Merch bar low key sucks and their red hats remind me of a particular unpopular politician that won't go away. Their water cooler/energy drink cabinet has been recently stocked very well, but they've let that thing sit mostly empty for months before restock. They do have a machine wipe down policy, but many other patrons straight up skip that step. Even with spray bottles scattered throughout. Final point is that the branding with Arnold all over the walls, then the "going to the gym is supposed to be fun" quotes on the walls feels at odds with everyone and most things about this gym. Most people do not look like they're having fun besides the staff that watch anime on clock. The people working out all seem to just absolutely hate each other and anyone who comes in. Throwing Arnold on the walls is inspiring, but that's like saying there's pieces of good icing on a shitty cake no one wants to eat with a nickleback CD. TLDR: Recently upgraded equipment doesn't cover for diversity of work out, nor does it cover other equipment that's been out for months. Staff are hit or miss. Besides your occasional muscle bro, it seems to be filled with socially awkward people with shotty gaze detection and confrontational issues. On top of that, hydration stations are hit or miss, and the locker room would've been below average if not for the lockers. (Don't know about the women's room, but the men's room has shotty plumbing on the urinal. I don't know how you let that be a consistent problem but considering the weights that haven't been fixed since October, i guess i shouldn't be shocked.) You wouldn't be dumb for wiping down equipment before and after your sets. I'd honestly advise shopping around for a better gym. read more

I am in town for a month and was very happy with $50 one month deal. Great selection of aerobic (including 8 stair masters which I never have to wait for), free weights, and machines. The front desk team is always very friendly and helpful. Unlike some gyms where they pack too much stuff into the square footage, this is a large gym with plenty of spacing. It is very clean and the members seem compulsive about wiping down the equipment after use - more so than any place I have been. It seems most of the negative reviews are about contract issues or by people who think $50/month is too much. read more

My auto renewal for the 3rd year of my full year membership is about to happen but instead I'll be canceling my membership. Had a very unpleasant interaction with a staff member today who accused my of stealing. There is a designated area at the rear of the front desk where unclaimed lost an found items have been placed. I've been told on several occasions by no less the manager that said items were there for taking as they had been unclaimed for a period of time( I can't remember the exact time frame she gave but that's besides the point) Today I was told in a hostile manner that I needed to ask first. This was not what I'd been told previously, again, by management. He proceeded to accuse me of stealing while violating my personal space. If you enjoy being treated this way by a business where you spend your hard earned money then by all means join. If not, I don't recommend Gold's gym of Monterey. read more

Best gym in the area. Visited here for four days in a row while on an out of town work trip. I was able to use a traveller's pass as I am a member of another Golds. The pros: Good hours Light and bright atmosphere Centrally located in the outdoor Del Norte mall Easy parking (if you know what side of the mall to park in and what door to enter from). It's on the same side as the movie theater. It's connected to Forever 21 and the front door faces H&M. Newer equipment Huge cardio area Clean and very modern locker rooms Clean gym area Friendly staff The cons: It looks bigger from the outside. The free weight area was smaller than I had hoped. It can get crowded at peak hours (like most other gyms). Limited variety of weight machines when compared to other Golds I've visited. No towel service Overall, I rated it a 4.5 as it's the best gym in the area for my needs. *If you arrive early, several of the parking lot gates are closed so a lot a little more time for detours. read more

Updated review. If I could give them negative stars I would. They should be ashamed of their business department. We tried to cancel our membership when we found out we were pregnant. After countless unanswered emails. which btw the front desk asked us to do to cancel... My husband finally had to physically go in to try to cancel. Absolutely absurd in these times to put us in harms way just to make it so difficult they were most likely hoping we'd give up and just keep paying for memberships we hadn't used in 6 months. There's no space to work out and 2 of the limited number of machines have been broken for months . Unless you take time off work , your chance of getting equipments is very limited. It's very crowded during lunch and after 04:00 pm . When I first joined I specifically asked about these times and I was assured it's not crowded, but I it's not the case. This gym is great! I've been a member here before the gym even opened at Del Monte Shopping Center back in 2016. Members respected the equipment, cleaned up after themselves, and the staff was nice. Now the gym is located outside in the parking lot due to local regulations on COVID. The best part about the gym - ANYONE can walk in for free and get a good workout in! You can easily spot the non-members because they lack the proper full body towel requirements and/or they wear their face masks improperly or not at all. So if you wanted to avoid the temperature checks that is asked upon each member before checking in to the gym definitely just walk right through the gym gates. No one surveillances the floor anyways. Plus if you don't feel like working out outdoors, you can also steal the dumbbells to supplement your at home gym. So far, a few dumbbells have been taken already which is a bummer. But what can you expect from such a well managed place! Sadly, the high standards this gym used to hold has dwindled along with its good employees. I wonder if it's because management discontinued their efforts in explaining gym etiquette and policies to new members, which was the same run down that I and many other new members received back in 2016? . No wonder no one re-racks their weights properly nor workouts with a towel. I gave 5 stars because this place needs it. BADLY. read more

I purchased a day pass here for $20 and honestly expected a little more. The bathroom was a little nasty and needed some cleaning. They had really good machines to really target muscle groups but on the cable machines there was a lack of attachments. Overall it was an okay gym and didn't think it was worth the day pass. I think the bad reviews on here are fake. I'm in town for business, bought the $60 week long pass. The gym is brand new, best equipment I've seen at any 24hr, LAFitness, or other Gold's gyms. Great gym new equipment and lots of it, if you find the right times to go you really don't have a problem getting to any machine you need, but of course there are always rush hours for gyms. Employees are always really nice and talkative .. for the most part One thing that really puts me off is the kids center, one girl in specific with long hair is always on her phone ALWAYs . I had a membership at the gym for over 5 years. The past year or two there has been a major shift in staff and care of the facility. It started with the cancellation of the senior and insurance based memberships. How does a business take away a membership from a group of seniors who are on a fixed income? In addition around this same time there was a large turn over in staff members and equipment started breaking, and wouldn't be fixed. The cleanliness of the gym started to faultier as well. This gym was crowded to begin with, not having enough equipment, but if you could manage to go at certain times, it would be ok. But then, another gym in the area closed and this golds location advertised to them for memberships. So in an already crowded gym with only two squat racks, they decided to take on more members from a closing gym. You would have to wait for squat racks for a very long time, if you could even get one. The only reason I give two stars is because this is the only free weight gym in Monterey that has updated equipment (when it's working or you can have access to it that is). read more

Construction delays and under-promised opening dates aside we finally get a look inside the new Gold's Gym in Monterey. I joined in March and was told they would open in June. The grand opening was this week. This is a typical Gold's with modern exercise machines and sharp contemporary interior design. It is not a super sized gym but it's definitely not a hole in the wall. For my purposes it is just big enough. I like the layout. Free weights and machines are generally towards the back, cardio nearer the front. The showers are not ready for use but looking inside the the locker room you can see they are close. I am impressed with the variety of weight machines. Some are newer designs that incorporate some bowflex-type technology that put less strain on joints. Very nice. The free weight area and available weights is impressive as well. I've never seen such a collection of dumbbells. Management directs patrons to carry around their own towel for wiping down machines but they do have wipes available for disinfecting machines after use. The front desk staff at 5:00 on Sunday morning were cheery and welcoming. read more

Great classes. Great equipment. Really crowded at peak times but hey it's in the mall what do you expect. The reason I give it three stars is because the locker rooms are always having issues. Today two of four showers are operable and neither have soap. Floors were also kind of funky. I dealt with that and hopped in the sauna which was only 130 degrees. Couldn't even get a sweat on. I don't complain much but these issues have occurred on and off my whole membership. Gym is packed all the time. You have the funds get it together. read more

Rebuttal to negative review of 3/30/23 by Beatris a. I believe her review of Mike is in retaliation for not hiring her. I agree with his decision. I am a retired high school teacher and Mike has been my personal trainer for one year. He has been meticulous in designing a program for me so that I can progress without injury. He is knowledgeable, attentive, experienced, and professional. I have met many of his former clients at the gym and they all respect him and praise his skill. Beatrise 'shadowed' us for an hour session recently and I was appalled at her behavior. Instead of paying close attention she spent the whole time doing stretches/lunges. Mike tried to explain to her how to determine the number of reps a client should do to avoid injury-but she did not seem interested. She loudly expressed some inappropriate comments and was oblivious when Mike told her that was not okay. At the end of the session I asked her what she learned- she did not have much of an answer. * From her review I get the impression that she was annoyed that not enough attention was paid to her- when it was she that should have been paying attention ! Great group classes. I do wish the instructor would stop telling people "It should hurt!" This is not entirely true. Yes there should be discomfort, not pain. There is the normal burning from lactic acid, but musculoskeletal pain like knee, shoulder, or back pain is not normal. The instructor works out 7 days a week, several classes. She is in super shape, most people are not like her. It is wrong to say , "just do it!". This can be causing injuries in her attendees. If an instructor is going to advise on pain, they need to stop class and ask more about the person's pain, otherwise they have no business telling someone. "Poor baby!" Kylie the instructor is to be commended on her awareness of people's abilities and limitations. read more

After a year of sampling gyms around the area, I've looked back and decided that Gold's Gym isn't even close to the best in the area. Nor is it that good. First off, somehow my membership was more than double the cost of others in the gym that I'd asked. Despite the premium price, the gym just became more and more crowded. Gold's had me paying premium price for the worst service, and when it came time to cancel and move on, they just vacuumed up more of my money. read more

This is a great gym and I have been here for multiple years. Unfortunately, Golds Del Monte has decided to allow $10 memberships for folks who were former members of Fit Republic near the airport which has closed. So, where is my $10 membership? I pay at least $45 a month and have been doing so for the entirety of my membership. I switched here from Fit Republic 2 Yrs. Ago to avoid the problems that are now at Gold's. It has gotten so crowded that at peak times it is impossible to find a free bench or machine with no line. My friend found a 4 inch switchblade (actual switchblade, not just a pocket knife) on the floor of the gym that somebody must've dropped. Are you serious? The reason I pay this much for a gym is so that there are less people in a nicer space. Gold's Del Monte is not making their loyal members happy. Don't sign up if you expect to find a really nice gym experience. read more

Came down for the annual at&t golf event which was great! But unfortunately I found the nearest gym to be a golds gym. Previous locations have been great although I had a unpleasant experience at the del Monte mall gym. To start, the ladies at the front desk are my least favorite they are extremely rude and Pay no attention to guests . I only got the day pass but not to mention the restroom was horrible. Urinary was leaking and soaked in urine ! No paper towels on the floor nor the restroom! And Both girls up front were just sitting there talking and eating food. Not a pleasant experience I wouldn't recommend . read more
