It's much more fun to write a negative review than one dripping with positives and accolades. At least for me. I am always more interested in the negatives than the positives when reading contractor reviews, after all, even one negative is a lot of bad news if it's your job that got fouled up. And when you've been "had" you don't need a goad to sit down and spill it all; revenge is what matters. But I have had an astonishingly positive experience with my new HVAC contractor Certified Climate Control and their "Area Manager" Alex Kavanaugh and I am getting this done before gratitude is overcome by sloth. The job, replace two existing Trane X19 units which were now out-of-warranty and beginning to need costly (very!) repairs. I found this outfit on Angie's List, and ran a Better Business Bureau check on them to eliminate them as "known trouble" but when I telephoned I was just a "cold call", with no connection to them and primarily as a check on my existing supplier's offer for the job. Mr Kavanaugh came out to my property and showed me a lot of issues which may have contributed to the premature demise of my $27,000+ Trane system (installed in 2005). My suggestion (based on my prior guy's proposal) that we leave the existing copper tubing in place was not a good idea and Alex patiently and correctly explained why not to do this. His proposal, to furnish two new American Standard 3-ton units arrived immediately and was less costly than the others I had, some of which did not even involve re-piping the refrigerant lines. So far, so easy. But with contracting the devil is in the details and you never know about the "low bidder" until the work begins. I liked Alex and he never dodged a question or gave me a run-around for an answer so I gave him the order via email. He got back to me later in the day to explain that he was upgrading the air handler in the attic because the distributor told him there was a special-purpose unit for horizontal installs in attic spaces. This unit cost $300-$400 more wholesale than the one specified on the proposal. He never asked for a penny. I did impose one condition: I told him he had to undertake, in writing, to be present to supervise the job throughout as I was tired of contractor crews showing up and asking me "What are we doing here?" He emailed back confirming this condition and I said "Fine, thanks, you have the order." Their truck was in my driveway the next morning. Alex and Carl installed the attic unit first. They were there without even asking for a check to cover the deposit set forth in the contract. They had correctly pulled building permit for the work and filed a Notice of Commencement for me. If I can't say it's a pleasure to have workmen in your home, these guys worked quietly, efficiently, and neatly. No shouting, no radio blasting, no need to run off to supply houses for "forgotten" parts. My original proposal did not specify Thermostat type, again like with the air handler, Alex brought the standard ones that come with the unit and a more costly version that integrates with your WiFi. My choice, no up-charge requested. A class act. The second unit went in a few days later, and in much the same way, quietly, neatly, professionally and with the absolute minimum of noise or mess. One of my requirements on the job was that final payment would not be due until I had a Contractor Affidavit, a Release of Lien, Building permit closed and had the Notice of Commencement terminated and recorded. All of this was done without any grousing, whining, attempt to pressure me or any other shenanigans so common. In fact, they came back out a few days after the install to re-check the system pressures, re-set a drain line I requested, and handle the recording on the Termination without a demur. My new units are a huge improvement over what was, after all, the "top-of-the-line" gear 11 years ago. They are so quiet that I sometimes have to check my cell phone to see if they are actually running. You can stand next to the air handler when it's on and not be sure it's running. All-in-all my experience was as good as it can be given that it was an expensive outlay I should not have had to do at this time. I'd buy from them again and would definitely recommend to friends or family. read more

I am happy to share my experience with everyone. As a single female it is hard to take on big home repair issues without feeling like I am being targeted. I recently had my A/C stop working, at the end of July and on a weekend. I immediately started asking for referrals and calling random numbers to see who could come out. My first appointment was with a highly publicized company that was able to come right out within an hour. I anxiously watched everything that the technician was doing to ensure that he was really checking things out thoroughly. When the meters reflected "0" for a Freon reading, I trusted the technician with the diagnosis. I was told that it wasn't worth saving. There was no Freon, would be rather expensive since the unit was so old and required a refrigerant that was being phased out and my best option was to replace the system. Before I knew it we were making arrangement to get a proposal for the replacement. At any rate, it wasn't long before I was hot to get additional estimates. I had some that emailed me a quote, sight unseen and some that barely spent 5 minutes looking and checking out the A/C. Nothing at this point was sitting well with me. What kind of unit, what size, what was included and of course warranty. It was baffling. Well, all that changed when I received a recommendation through Nextdoor.com for Certified Climate Control. I called and spoke to Alex and he had a tight schedule that day but did everything within his power to make it out to me. He explained that he didn't want to price anything out until he inspected it for himself. That alone made me more confident in my decision. He kept in touch with me about his schedule and arrived when he said he would. He checked the unit, and was the first person to even go into the attic and map it out and see what was there to work with. By the time he went to check the outside unit, I had told him I was previously told it was out of Freon. He insisted on check it anyway. To my surprise the gauges did not show "0"! I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The other technician was either incompetent or worse, had lied to me to try to set up a sale. Within minutes Alex had diagnosed that it was just a bad capacitor and had a new one all wired up. I was rescued!! Long story short, because of his morals, professionalism and taking the time to teach me a little about air conditioners, they have a customer for life. I will have to replace my system soon as it is 18 years old, but for now it's working wonderfully and I can begin to make arrangements for a new one. I cannot say enough about how highly I recommend Alex and this company. I have complete peace of mind that when I do make that call for a new system that Alex has researched what will benefit me the most for my circumstances. Oh, and this might even be a good time to say their warranty exceeds most of the company's out there. In my case, I am impressed, thankful and completely satisfied with their skill, attitude and workmanship. read more

My downstairs 5 ton unit was broken and needed replacement, downstairs one side of my home used to get very cool and other side very little, upstairs (on separate unit) was cooling but not enough even after unit running for very long. Alex from CCC came and did very thorough assessment (went through complete downstairs and upstairs attic spaces). I was very impressed with his patience and focus on details. He explained to me with full details why ducting was the main problem for uneven cooling downstairs and less cooling upstairs. He drew detailed ducting diagrams - existing and proposed - to explain how his recommendations will solve these problems. Being engineer by profession myself, I had several questions. Alex came twice to my home to discuss and answer my questions. He spent 5-6 hrs over couple of days to complete assessment and answer all my questions. Alex was able to gain my full confidence that solution he was proposing will work. I had 6-7 other contractors, including the one who installed AC and ductwork when home was initially built, do assessment and provide estimates. Some of them did not even care to go in attic but provided estimates for duct work. Others did go in attic to do assessment but no one took pains & time to fully understand and explain the problem. I was not convinced that their recommendations will solve my problems. CCC's price for unit replacement was extremly competitive. CCC's price for duct work was not comparable as no one else provided similar solution but I felt it was very reasonable based on type and extent of work. Based on all this I decided to go with CCC to do my job. Alex very well earned that. Alex and crew showed up on time. All of the them were very professional, courteous and diligent in their work. Completed work over 3 days as duct work was extensive and attic space very limited/restrictive. I was very happy that despite 2-3 people being in attic for 3 days, they completed the duct work without any damage to my home. Every day after the work they cleaned up my home and garage as necessary. Alex and I went through the check list and verified that all of the work was completed as planned. Though it is early but so far everything is going well and outcomes are what I had expected - downstairs (2975 sq ft) cooling evenly throughout the home and upstairs cooling much better. This was my best experience ever with any contractor doing any job on my home. Alex and crew did commendable job. I would be very happy to recommend them to anybody. read more

Our year old 4 ton Air Conditioning system stopped working. The thermostat displayed error code E201 indicating that the system had lost communication with the air handler indoor blower motor. Called First Coast at 8:30 AM to place a service call. They came within a few hours and quickly had us back up and running. The blower motor and control module were replaced under our 10 year parts and labor warranty with no out of pocket costs. He told my wife that our selection of the continuous run fan operation option likely lead to the premature blower failure. He set both our two system thermostats for "Auto" fan rather than "Continuous" fan operation. I reset both thermostats back to "Continuous" fan for the following reasons: A) As explained to us when we purchased the systems a year ago "Continuous" variable speed fan operation is from an energy consumption standpoint is more efficient. This is one of the Lennox design features that allows their units to have such high SEER ratings. B) Continuous fan operation is much less not more stressful electrically and mechanically on the blower motor than on-off auto fan operation. Starting a motor from no speed to full speed normally requires an inrush current spike of 600% of normal running current. C) To minimize the generation of ozone the system PUREAIR AIR PURIFICATION SYSTEM UV bulb should only be operated when the blower fan is running. The system does not incorporate a sail switch to turn the filter off when the air flow has stopped--continuous fan operation is a must. read more

I spoke with Alex on the phone for an initial quote and then he came out to fine tune the details. Communication was excellent! He was very thorough in his quote and also extremely patient with all of my questions and requests. My husband and I had a wonderful experience with Certified Climate Control. They did an awesome job helping my husband and I understand what was wrong with our AC and what needed to be done to fix it. They went above and beyond to help temporarily fix our AC until the part could be bought and fixed the next day. We were able to sleep in a cooled house and they were out to finish fixing the issue the very next morning as promised. So, this was my second installation with First Coast Climate Control. This one was in my investment home. The house is built in 1957 with not much of attic space. I got several quotes the prices were close but the other ones they didn't consider the changes they have to make to the duct work.
