The views expressed here are my opinion and are based on my 1st hand experience with this practice. Hang on to your wallet people! These guys are super expensive even with insurance. They look for ways to make it more expensive. They swoop in with financing that charge high interest rates. They leave out relevant cost information (like your insurance covers this but they charge you before you leave any way and then treat you like you are stupid explaining why you still owe them and refuse to refund your money). And when they don't feel like they have gouged you enough they go back and make things up 5 months later and send you a bill that doesn't even try to show what the charges are for (not even a date of service). My experience here was horrible and I cannot over state that in my opinion, I do not think anyone should do business here. GO ANY WHERE ELSE!!! As for the quality of care I have serious doubts that I was given accurate information. I believe they intentionally find more wrong than there actual is and then try to sell you on an expensive treatment plan. Thankfully, I did not follow through with them on much of the work they recommended. This dental practice brings a whole new meaning to hating to go to the dentist. P.S. I agree with another review that says they way over do the imaging and doing so needlessly sucks up your insurance coverage meaning you will owe them out of pocket for any additional work you may need. Update: Discovered recently that they are actually charging me for a service that I DID NOT receive. I actually refused the service so they did not perform the service but are now billing me for it. Appointment started out with a comprensive photo and Xray session. They used these to try and upsell "smile" enhancements and to suggest I needed a crown/cavavity fillings with out a doctor even taking a look into my mouth. After declining the massive upcharge for a crown they sent me on my way without even doing a dental cleanign. This place clearly exists to upcharge and upsell unneccesary procedures. Will not recommend, gave me a treatment plan 1st day and did a oral exam and x-rays. Dentist came in looked me over. Then said we could put a crown on tooth missing filling. They gave me a plan and what this would cost. Next day I came in for the work, and dentist came in and had second thoughts about crown, thought I needed a extraction and he grinded down the tooth, and says "we need to extract it", let me get the finance girl in here. From $1200 to $4803, and I told her not to pull my credit, and away she does and they are asking when I can pay upfront? Plus dentist wanted to add some crowns, all with me sitting in the dentist chair and feeling pressured. BE AWARE: FIRST COAST SMILES DOES COSTLY PROCEDURES WITHOUT CLEAR PATIENT CONSENT AND CHARGES YOU FOR THEM DESPITE YOU INSTRUCTING THEM NOT TO. I'm new to Jacksonville and scheduled an appointment for an annual cleaning. From the start, I made it very clear that I did not want any additional procedures because they were outside my budget. At my first visit, after a 90-minute exam on 08/13/25 the finance coordinator, Clarissa Memrick, sat down with me to review the payment plan. She confirmed that only the procedures I agreed to--a cleaning and localized antibiotics on three teeth--would be done at my next appointment. Based on the agreement of the procedure on my next visit and that the expense would be $149, I scheduled my second visit. Trusting what we agreed on I concerned to be treated for. When I returned today (08/19/25), the staff performed extra procedures without my approval. Despite my declining a cancer screening three times (once at my first visit and again when scheduling), and once at the front desk when confirming my second appointment) regardless, today they went ahead and did the cancer screening anyway in a very hidden kinda way. Additionally the hygienist mention she would be applying local antibiotic which was what I agreed on but also then followed to perform an "appl hydrxy regen medic-per th" procedure on two teeth. Her approach was very misleading and these unapproved services added $240 for the medication procedure ($120 for each tooth) and $45 for the cancer screening, on top of my expected $149 bill. So Instead of $149, I was charged $434. I disputed the cancer screening charge and was able to have that waived, but I was still forced to pay $389 for services I did not authorize upon the conclusion of my appointment. I called after the visit to express my frustration. Clarissa admitted she knew what I had agreed to but said only that she would "speak to the hygienist." This does not address the real issue: they performed unauthorized procedures, ignored my clear instructions, and charged me without consent. My balance is $0 as I don't owe the practice anything and paid for the abuse of treatment. This practice cannot be trusted. They take advantage of patients financially and show no accountability for their actions. I will not be returning and strongly warn others to AVOID going through the same experience read more

Just don't! Bad billing staff. They can make mistakes but you're not allowed to. The negative reviews are an echo of my distain! The dentist lost so much future business over one staff who is indigent and arrogant, petty and petulant! I even had the insurance company who was kinda blown away by the was I was treated. They thought I had caused the issue, until they had us on a three way call. They were over billing and never sent a bill, but months later sent a balance forward and did not give us the time to act. She had to adjust the bill (mistake on her part). Insurance lady recorded the call, made notes and sent a complaint to the Provider relations. Have been given horrible costumer service, had been going to them for years for my dental work but have extremely high anxiety about dental work, when trying to them for my cleaning they told they would call in my prescription in the morning of even though they had told to come in on Friday to sign all the paperwork only to told they had none of it ready waited 30 minutes. The hygienist told me she would have the doctor call it in so could go by and pick up. I was called an hour before my appointment and told no they could not do that and i had to come in and get. When at the pharmacy the pharmacist informed me that they could have indeed called it in. When confronted about this first coast smiled said well we don't that. The manager was snippy with us and not once did any person apologize to us. This whole thing sent me into an anxiety attack. Between this and the hippa violation a year ago of when they told my sister about how bad my teeth were I have had enough hopefully this helps someone avoid this place for their dental care read more

I made a new patient appointment for my daughter. The appointment was set for 716. They sent an email at the end of June asking to confirm the appointment. My daughter missed the email (she's 19 and doesn't always read email). She had an emergency and had to travel out of state. She called the day before to re-schedule. The receptionist told her they had been trying and trying to reach her, she missed her appointment and basically.... perhaps she should take her business elsewhere. When I made the appointment nobody stressed the importance of 'Confirming' the appointment via email. Ridiculous. When I called to discuss the situation, the other receptionist was just insistent that they are correct in their procedures. She had no interest in hearing what I had to say. If you make a new patient appointment, be sure to read your email. My advice is the same as the receptionist - take your business elsewhere. read more

I'm not sure if there was recently a change in ownership and/or management but I would no longer recommend this dentist. I began going there in 2019 when it was Schumacher Dental Center and it's now First Coast Smiles. The quality of service has continued to decline since my first appointment in 2019 and my most recent appt. left me wanting to find a new dentist. They have always been heavy handed with their cleanings so I ask for numbing gel to cut down on the pain ever since they offered it at my first appt. However during my most recent routine cleaning, the hygienist was so aggressive that I had pain even with the numbing and my mouth was sore for two days after. Of note, I have never experienced pain or had to be numbed for any cleanings at any other dentist - only this one. At the end of the appointment the doctor didn't even bother to look into my mouth. He just asked the hygienist if there were any issues and was in and out in less than 1 minute. They also didn't do the periodontal charting and when I asked about my wisdom teeth they just referred me to an oral surgeon without even bothering to look at them. I had always enjoyed going to the dentist but after treating here I've become scared of routine cleanings. read more

About 2 months ago Dr. Schumacher took it upon himself to "fix my bite" and with two fell swoops drilled down the inner cusp (edge) of upper molar 14. He turned it into a jagged edge. It was deep enough into the dentin and weakened so much that the inner back corner of that tooth smashed flat from normal biting down after the damage was done. After the flattening it became very sensitive (like an exposed nerve) for several weeks. Just my tongue resting on the tooth causes pain even still. Now it's a constant dull ache, sometimes more, and hurts when I chew on it. I am devastated, as that tooth could have lasted the rest of my life. Now it needs major work and will end up getting pulled sooner than later because of Dr. Schumacher's negligence. I wish I had stopped him in that moment because I had a really bad feeling about it but I thought he knew what he was doing and had my best interest in mind. Why was that tooth even touched? He didn't ask, just said "I'm going to fix your bite." I have never had a problem with my bite and that tooth wasn't even the one being worked on. I have spent so many hours trying to figure out WHY he did this. I am in chronic pain so the thought is always crossing my mind. He didn't want to talk to me when I sent an email about the damage he caused. His assistant basically said I can spend my money to go to their endodontist. I said no, and they said "give it time, it may get better." No ownership of the mistake, saying it's normal to file a tooth. I said "A natural one? A molar?!" From what I have seen in my research, it is not done that way and not by this type of dentist. Other questionable things happened that I dismissed when I should have left sooner. read more

Where to begin? Your first appointment starts with a experimental art project straight out of Hellraiser where he props your mouth open wider than the Grand Canyon and then proceeds to take photos with his personal DSLR camera. He never showed me these photos, nor explained why. I suspect something gross happens with them. Then you go to the hygienist who pulls the floss down to your mandible. This is not an exaggeration and it's incredibly painful. She'll tell you everyone else does it wrong and that "this is the only right way". Your body, and every other professional will tell you otherwise. Then, despite having no problems with my childhood fillings, they go for the cash grab to replace them. I'm hesitant to say go for it. But I have insurance. They replace all my fillings and now I have pain, even a year later in all of those fillings. He also broke one of the teeth in the process. Didn't offer to make it right for the damage he caused. An actual nightmare. Don't go here if you like your teeth. read more
