This place had the best breakfast deal anywhere in Sturgis during the Motorcycle Rally. Not only was it an awesome deal, but the food was outstanding. Between 7:00 and 11 AM, certain items were $3.99. And that included coffee! The hashbrowns are out of this world. I don't like potatoes much, but these are some of the best hashbrowns I've ever had. Yes, we had to wait for a table, but if you have the time, it was worth it. Service was not very good, and our waiter was never to be found when needed. But again, nobody has good service during the rally. The small towns are overwhelmed with crowds that dwarf the entire size of their towns, so I get it. It's like stepping back in time when entering this place. The restaurant is very old school. Nothing changed in this place for probably 50 years or more. A little dark and dingy, but at least it's not generic and corporate, like so much else these days. And I love that! The breakfast burrito had the potatoes inside, so it doesn't look like much on the plate. But I heard that was also good. read more

I'll do 5 stars because of the awesome shuttle ride to and from the airport. That is worth 5 stars all by itself... The hotel room was nice and had a mini fridge which was convenient. There is a golf cart that can shuttle you back and forth between the rooms and the casino, but I just walked. The hotel is located on the south side of town and all of deadwood is north. It is only about a mile to the other end of town, so this is a great location. It is also across from the 76 museum (which was unfortunately closed on the day I was there). There is also a trolley you can catch for $1 that goes from one end of town to the other. The blackjack tables had a $1 minimum, so if you want to gamble for a few hours and not lose or win very much, you can do so. There is also no smoking and that is a HUGE plus for me. My room was $49 per night, what a steal!! They also have a buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but I didn't try it. read more

Got a great room in the 2nd building where the trace lodge checkin lobby is. Don't let the name Travelodge scare you this was nicely updated our room had new carpet and the bed was the best. Wish we could buy one just like it . Had a k pod along with fridge and iron/board in room. Was confusing trying to locate the continental breakfast and we missed it by 5 minutes. It does not appear to be distancing due to covid because none of the other casinos in Deadwood have machines turned off. I did win on the few that I played. We didn't make reservations for our July 4th visit. And soon learned that every room in town was sold. In fact the entire Black Hills was full & trust me, I had called them ALL! The closest available room was Sundance, WY. We started the hour drive & saw a billboard for First Gold. I decided to try one last time. And lucky for us there had been a last minute cancellation! It was our first time at First Gold. The front desk girl wasn't really knowledgable & gave us some wrong details, but she was super friendly. We found our room-which was a smoking room n perfect for us. It was exceptionally clean n fresh. It had tile, which we appreciated. After getting settled, we took the shuttle to the main building for dinner. It was all you can eat prime rib & crab legs. It wasn't huge but very good. I could cut that Prime Rib with a FoRK! In fact it was so good, we went back for breakfast! After dinner, we took the shuttle into downtown. The driver was extremely helpful & friendly. All in all this was a great trip & was made better because of the hotel. it isn't often that I can say that and wanted to say Kudos to everyone there. read more

First, the hotel: It's a little confusing because there are different buildings, and they're not connected. You want to stay in Building #2. Trust me on this. #2 has been remodeled, so the rooms are newly appointed; they're not in the same building as the casino/restaurant, so there's less traffic and noise; AND there's a complimentary coffee station on the first floor. Only catch in #2 is the slowest elevator in the world. Also, in other hotels I've been in, if you leave the "do not disturb" on the door, the maids will come back once you've removed that. At First Gold, the maids will only come back during their shift - so if you snooze, you lose the cleaning. Now, the gaming & buffet: The slots were decent. A better variety here of "animated" slots than I saw at other casinos in town. I still didn't win, though. :) I only ate the buffet for breakfast but found it good. Fruit, ice cream, made-to-order omelets, along with the usual breakfast items (bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, etc). We live in spearfish and love to come down for the endless crab and prime rib on Friday and Saturday. All you can eat for only $27 a person. Not the best tasting food but for a buffet it's a good deal. The staff was excellent and very kind. Drinks were always filled and table was always cleared. Sometimes when you pick the cheap hotel room in town you get what you pay for. I wasn't expecting much out of my stay at First Gold. But I was extremely pleased with my stay at First Gold. We stayed in building #2 with a roll away in the room of 2 adults and 3 teenagers. The kids said the roll away was quite comfortable and the room was large enough that we didn't feel cramped. The TV wasn't huge and there was no refrigerator in the room but it was a good solid room for some good value. First Gold isn't in downtown which is a small strike against it if you want to be a part of the action but I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again when I return to Deadwood. read more

I got a great rate on a beautiful room at this hotel in deadwood. Super clean, really comfortable stay. The only reason it received one star from me is because I believe one of their employees stole a cactus plant of mine. Sounds ridiculous, but we were in a cross country trip and I pulled it out of my car and set it on the ground right next to my driver side door to get some sun. We were the only car parked in the upper outdoor lot as it was a slow weekday. We were making trips to and from the car, and in less than 15 minutes my cactus was gone. The only person around that entire hour was a white girl in her mid twenties patrolling around on a golf cart. When confronted about it, she said a little too much about how she didn't take it. lol. For identification purposes, she had brown hair and a nose ring. I hope she enjoys my cactus. And I hope that First Gold Hotel sees this. The plant had been with me for over 7 years and lived in three states. Other than that our stay was amazing. Super comfy bed, really peaceful location. Great rate on Priceline. read more

I do think the buffet is a little overpriced and you don't get much of a discount with your players card. However, for table games players, this casino is great for first time gamblers or inexperienced blackjack players. They offer a $2 min. on 6deck and dealers and floor staff, Theresa in particular, are extremely helpful in helping newbies make playing decisions. Just don't let them talk you into the sucker bet if you don't want to play it. The only issue with the 6 deck is you're getting about half of a shoe before the shuffle and then they hand shuffle it, so it's tough to keep a good pace of play. This is a nice hotel. Pleasant and quick check in. Parking was sufficient in their own parking garage that accommodated our truck and bike trailer. Room was clean and updated. Coffee convenient to the room available for free. The only very small inconvenience was that the food and casino was in a different building, a bit of a hilly walk from our room in building three. They do offer a ride down and back however. The restaurant has NO ambience but a decent buffet for $17. A dollar off for seniors. The prime rib, surprisingly, was the best thing they had and it was truly outstanding. The rest was typical buffet food. Small casino located in this building was a fun way to end the night. I booked a room online as they were pet friendly and I had my 3.4 lb dog with me. The room was a special deal through Booking.com. Once we arrived and I mentioned they advertised they were pet friendly they cancelled my booking and gave us another room and charged a $50 non refundable fee. The room for our pet was more than the deal I was getting on booking.com. So, it costed more for our pet to stay one night than it did for my husband and me. Parking is not very convenient to the rooms with outside entrance so be prepared to walk and carry your things. read more

The room was clean and had a fridge. When we first checked in we were given a unclean pizza everywhere room which the staff changed us to a different room right away. The hotel was quiet we stayed in building 2 and did enjoy our two day stay. The hotel is 2 miles from downtown so it's not in the busy part. Did not step foot in the casino. This place was a sad disappointment. We waited in line for about 25 minutes to get on the list for the Saturday night buffet. It was my birthday so we were excited to see so much hype! Luckily we got through quickly but were ushered down to the dungeon. However here is what is factual. It is about a 10 minute walk from downtown, there is a shuttle if you prefer or the trolly. The rooms appear to be clean but I awoke itching at 5:30 AM And could not get back to sleep, I saw welts on my torso, I'm not allergic to anything, you decide?? I took a shower I'm still itchy the welts have subsided a bit. Nervous to bring my luggage into my home. The shower curtain when pulled shut makes it very dark and difficult to see, spooky. We paid 89.00 plus tax bringing it to 99.00 on Hotels tonight, I wish we would have kept looking. Overall I would not suggest this hotel. read more

We have stayed here every time we have come to Deadwood. We had three kiddos and First Gold truly accommodates their guests. They have complimentary cribs for little ones that are very nice and come with a fitted crib sheet and receiving blankets. They are willing to bring a coffee maker or microwave if your room for some reason did not come with one as well. This hotel was very clean and quiet. They do allow pets for an extra fee and have a nice dog walking area. Their breakfast buffet is wonderful and they have a made to order omelet station with all the fixin's. Children 5 and under eat free and its around $11.00 for adults. Staff are very friendly and go out of their way to make you feel right at home. There is parking available and transportation from the hotel to the casino if needed. It is only a short walking distance though. A trolley also picks up to go downtown on the hour. Just an all around family friendly place. We stayed both on off peak season for around $50 a night and during peak season for about $90 a night. Both booked through priceline. Well worth it and a wonderful place to stay. read more

We stayed three nights here as part of a tour package. I'll admit, when I saw "Travelodge" on the itinerary, I was apprehensive about what the hotel was going to be like. I was very pleasantly surprised. The hotel manager came aboard the bus to welcome us, explain the layout of the hotel (including the casino location below the hotel), and explain how the staff was going to deliver our luggage to our rooms. She also explained that if we needed a lift to the casino, to call the desk and they would send a golf cart to take us there 24 hours a day. She also explained how and where the Deadwood Trolly worked. The tour bus drove us up to the second building where we off-loaded. Despite being an older hotel, it had been recently renovated throughout. It was clean and everything in the room worked properly. Every room had a small refrigerator. Our room had a step-in shower with a seat bench that was easy to access. Shortly after we got to the room, one of the staff brought our luggage. The front desk folks were cordial and helpful. The next morning, we went down for a continental breakfast (which was nothing special, but adequate). The serving staff were friendly and kept the breakfast items full. Included with our room keys were coupons for the all-you-can-eat Prime Rib Buffet in the casino the following night, which turned out to be one of the best meals we had on the trip. Even if we didn't have the coupon, it would have been well worth the $18 for the weekday buffet. During the three nights there, we had several occasions to call for a ride. The golf cart and driver showed up promptly and would take us to the casino, or even a little farther to the edge of their property if needed. When we were ready to return, we went to the "Players Club" desk in the Casino and they would call for the cart, which arrived promptly. An interesting side note is that the area the hotel sets on was in a valley carved from a hill on the edge of town. In the evenings, a small herd of Bighorn Sheep would come down the hillside behind the hotel. All-in-all, it was a very pleasant stay. I would not hesitate to recommend staying there. read more

I would recommend this establishment to anyone traveling the Black Hills. We stayed in early July, during the busy season, but before the Sturgis rush. Upon checking in, the receptionist went out of her way to get my disabled veteran husband a better, more convenient room. Not all rooms have refrigerators, instead they deliver one to your room if you request it. My family of four was able to comfortably stay in the larger than normal size room (two queens). They have a shuttle service that will take you to the part of the hotel where the buffet is, which was wonderful, even though it was only a block away, it was helpful for my mobility impaired husband. First Gold (named this because it is on the sight of the first gold discovery in Deadwood) is conveniently located at the end of Main Street; if you are coming from Spearfish or Sturgis expect to make a quick right hand turn into their parking lot prior to getting to the main part of Main Street; it is across the street from the 'Days of '76' museum. There is also a Deadwood Trolly ($1 per ride, free with Deadwood passport) that makes this location even more convenient. The only complaint I would have is that the buffet breakfast (we never tried the lunch or dinner buffet) was overpriced to what was offered. The omelet bar was nice, but scrambled eggs seemed powdered, the French toast sticks weren't very good. That being said, even though we were disappointed with the quality of the food (at $11 per person for breakfast) the service during the buffet was outstanding. Our waitress even went back to the kitchen to get diced tomatoes for my husband's omelet. If you are an omelet person, this would probably be a decent value, if not, I wouldn't recommend the breakfast buffet. But no matter what, I would definitely recommend this hotel. read more

I have tried almost all the buffet's in the hills area from Rapid city to Deadwood to Spearfish. Hands down this is the best I have had! It is surprising to have carrots cooked just right in a buffet. That's not all the food is fresh and good every time I go there. I have tried another so-called famous buffet in Deadwood only to be let down. I try to get up there at least once a month to enjoy this treat and wish I could get there more often. It's quite a spread and always pleasing. Also there are new dishes added on a regular basis that are a big bang, very well done! I haven't tried the breakfast yet, but am planning to do so soon. Don't ignore this place. It doesn't seem like it would be all that great but I've stayed here twice and the rooms are remodeled with extremely modern bedding etc. I LOVE this place especially for their rates. It's crazy to pay at least $30 more for a room at Cadillac Jacks (even though it's my fav place to gamble) when this place is super super nice and cheap! You can't stay in a Motel 6 for this price. I've been able to stay during the week by calling the same day after 6pm for $36+ tax! And I would take this room over most of the $100 per night rooms I've stayed in across the country. They have refrigerators and I needed to heat up some food I brought and asked if there was a microwave I could use somewhere and they immediately brought one to our room. This was even at 11pm! Amazing! It's my go to place in Deadwood that most people "sleep on" PUN intended! But don't everyone go at once and drive my low rates up okay? I'm helping everyone out. I hope it doesn't backfire on me. You can't be disappointed at this place for the money. read more
