My wife and I are first time home buyers. We have accounts at a few of the major banks and were wanting to use one of them for the sake of convenience. The problem, which several of you may also be experiencing, is that it seems if any of them have decent reviews as lenders on one site they have horrible reviews on another. So our realtor recommended finding a local bank to use and specifically provided the contact info of Greg Simmons at First Savings as someone her clients have had good experiences with in the past. We reached out to Greg and he provided us with a quick no pressure estimate despite being on vacation at the time. We ultimately decided to go with Greg and the entire process went extremely smoothly. We didn't have to provide the mountain of documentation we were fearing and their system for uploading/signing everything is very convenient. Overall the whole process was straightforward, we were never fearful of not making our closing date, and closing costs were actually less than we were expecting. Using one of the preferred lenders and the recommended title company enabled me to get a lower interest rate (this was back in '06). Working with Gregg B. and Rick K was extremely easy and made the process of buying a first home quite smooth. Working with Debbie Benkert of First Savings Mortgage has been EXEMPLARY to say the least! I found Mrs. Benkert via online Yelp Reviews and made contact with her via their email service. She immediately reached out to me to complete an online application, which literally took minutes. Later in the day, she emailed me with my pre-approval. Due to my renting a home, which the owners decided to sell, I was placed in a difficult situation to purchase that home or another in a very quick turnaround. If I did not purchase that home, I would have 30 days to vacate premises based on VA housing law. Mrs. Benkert was extremely receptive and understanding to my situation. I decided not to go under contract on the home due to the homeowners trying to get over on me on asking price, lack of repairs and no upgrades or remodeling which was unacceptable. She and I communicated regularly on acquiring pre-approval letters for the homes I was interested in going under contract. Debbie was available throughout each day and also weekends. Once under contract, her and her team were on top of informing me of documents required for closing and ensured that everything was in place. They performed amazingly! My previous mortgage process did not go anything as smooth as working with Debbie and First Savings Mortgage. OUTSTANDING, they are!!! I was also able to get everything in place and also was able to move the closing day earlier than predicted. They worked with me down to the wire and ensured everything was in place. I also acquired an impeccable interest rate, which was far from what I initially thought it may be. The closing was quick and easy! The best part of the experience was to actually meet Debbie Benkert at the closing. That absolutely made my day. She is an amazing person and I appreciate her to the fullest extent. These past couple of months have been extremely difficult on me and my family. Without Debbie, I am unsure how I could have made it through. Over the course of working the mortgage loan, I almost felt, as if I knew Debbie for much of my life. Debbie is very understanding, personable, knowledgeable, dedicated and very thorough. Our experience with First Savings in McLean was an embarrassment for them. I had expected to provide large quantities of documentation to get my home loan, however what I didn't expect was for the lender to be rude, unprofessional, and unable to communicate what was needed. After a week of emailing back and forth, where I repeatedly asked for clarification on what documents were required, i received a phone call at my office with a rude and unprofessional lender who raised her voice at me and explained that "it was unacceptable to expect her to respond to my emails within 24 hours." She then went on a tirade about how busy she is and how she doesn't have time to tell me what she needs but I needed to supply documentation ASAP. After 20 minutes of her yelling into the phone in an unprofessional manner, I finally was able to gather enough information to go to my bank who was able to provide me document. During our 30-40 min conversation, of which should have taken a simple email, she failed to listen to my concerns or address any of my questions and continuously raised her voice and told me I didn't understand how busy she was. I expressed my opinion that her staffing issues wasn't my concern and she continued with excuse after excuse for her incompetence. Once all documentation was provided her customer service did not improved; nor did they confirm they had all information required. I feel that I had to work harder then them to ensure I met my close date and the only reason my close was met was because I continuously followed up with them which resulted in more rude conversations where they complained about their staffing issues. Additionally, we were required to send documentation via email with no concern for security of our personal documents. I only used First Savings because they were recommended by my Realtor, I was so appalled by their service, I suggested he refrain from recommending her again because she made a very stressful situation significantly worse due to her horrific customer service and incompetence. I will never use this branch of First Savings again for any financing needs and I would recommend that others avoid them as well. read more

I had a loan and a contract and then my title company (who are also awesome) found out that the bank that I had a contract with didn't really have the right to sell me my house. My title company found out that the property was actually going to be auctioned due to foreclosure. I had already had a home inspection and an appraisal with another lender but the house needed a hot water heater and the other guys were unwilling to work with me on the timing of replacing it. My title company recommended Steve Fox at First Savings and he was able to work with me and get the loan approved and closed. Not only was he able to help me with the timing of replacing the hot water heater, but I had my loan approved and closed 17 days after my first contact with Steve. Reached out to Steve Fox because he was recommended through a friend of ours. He was able to provide us with the various options available to us for the refi we were seeking. After chewing on it for 2 weeks, we decided to move forward with it and began sending him documents he needed from us. I then received an email from an assistant saying that he wanted to further discuss things with us and that he would call us the next day. He didn't call. I called and left him a message the day after, and then called his assistant. She said she would remind him to call us when she spoke with him that day. Still no call. A week passed and I emailed him asking why he hadn't returned my call. No response. This all took place during the month of May. When we reached out to Steve, the rates were still below 4%, but by the middle of the month they were close to 4.5%. I was not aware of this rate change until the end of May - but wouldn't you think that your lender would inform you, "Hey you better lock in before it goes even higher..." I contacted a VP at First Savings, detailing my experience with Steve Fox, and explained that I now may not be able to refi due to his incompetence. No response - kind of becoming a theme. I then contacted the President, Larry Pratt, who did respond and say that he would look into the situation and reply back to me. Still haven't heard anything. I really wish I would have never contacted this company. They have cost me a boat load in savings due to a higher interest rate that I now have to pay. read more

If you or your spouse is self-employed and has a Schedule K, then you need to call Brackton Pratt at First Savings Mortgage when you're looking to buy a home. My husband and I made the mistake of getting pre-approved though an online lender in 2012 when we were purchasing a home. Although the online lender had pre-approved us, when it came time to close, despite regularly calling the load officer for updates, our closing date came and went without the lender even opening our file. We got an extension and they swore they could get it done. Less than 2 weeks left before our final closing opportunity, and they still had not gotten to us. In desperation, with just more than a week before close, a friend referred us to Brackton Pratt. He got us closed in 8 days! We are now in the market again to upgrade to a bigger home, and Brackton was my first call. He and his assistant are always super responsive. They tell me what documents they need and give me a secure way to submit them, and within hours, Brackton has reviewed them and is ready to ask questions, answer my questions, and provide a pre-approval. He and his team are so responsive and knowledgeable. read more
