Both my mom and grandma had nothing but good things to say. The staff was attentive and caring. Always smiling. I wanted to specifically say that a nurse assistant named Sherri was stellar. Also Carrie , Dwayne and Jerome. Not only is it rare to find a good place like this, but to even find one good employee. Here there were many. Also my grandma couldn't stop talking about the food. Don't let this place fool you by the looks. My mom said that it looks old and that worried her at first. But it was clean and cared for. Just aging. Do consider this hospital. I will rate the hospital on New Bern Avenue as sufficiently disorganized as to justify concern for anyone considering using it, or especially in the case of taking someone you care for, there. While there from March 25-27, 2026, for an infection in my right foot, I was scolded by a female Muslim doctor in front of 4-5 female medical students of some kind, a male "almost doctor" (still in the pipeline) and a very patient and professional, male EMT fella. The doctors in this hospital should be required to wear "bodycams" and if this Muslim female doctor had, she would have been fired that day. I am an honorably retired (20+ years) former US Army Paratrooper, Special Forces (SFQC 3-83) and Delta Force (OTC-18) combat veteran Operator / Sniper, with a service-connected disability rating of 100 percent (P+T) for a kidney transplant. During my Army career and in every other instance requiring medical services, I have never encountered the general lack of organization and focus on priorities that are at best of little importance to the health and welfare of any American patient, as I did at / in Wake Med. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, competent and welcoming. We were especially impressed with the facility director, Ms. Jacqueline Mitchell, and the admissions director, Will Rogers. They both made the transition to a nursing home residence for my aunt very seamless and were instrumental in explaining the process to me and my sister. Also, the nursing staff has been outstanding!! The director of nursing even came out to my car to assist the staff in removing my immobile aunt from the car. Everyone on staff is very friendly and helpful. When mom said she's calling 911 and asked what happened they kept telling her no please ( they must get in trouble if someone else calls) and they finally called. My mother talked to her 45 mins prior to arriving and she was awake so this happened within a 45 minute span. She couldn't even get proper care for 24 hours without almost losing her life. Terrible care: My family member was there to recover from…read morehip replacement surgery. This meant Physical Therapy, learn how to go up a few stairs, transfer into car, recover enough to come home in a week or two. He never got more than 15 minutes of PT per day. PER DAY. The food was dreadful. The food was cold. When he asked for coffee or anything it never arrived at all OR it was stone cold. They told us he was eating well and doing great. He was barely eating anything as the food was so bad and stone cold. He asked to have help taking a shower multiple times, no one ever helped. He also asked to have his bed sheets changed, no one did so. He ended up back in the hospital as no one there would listen or help him or tell us the truth as to how he was doing. He called 911 to come and get him as he was maltreated, malnourished and not helped one iota. His days there extended his overall recovery. The staff had no clue what was going on. Run fast from this place - and don't look back. I would give this DUMP a zero if I could.

My husband and I thought we were going to fight to get our son. I finally told another staff member what we were told the day before and we were not leaving without our son. My only Con is I feel they are understaffed, when my mom press the call button Aides were slow to come. but overall my mom was comfortable, she was always washed and clean. After getting a set of adult training wheels, I was able to ride a bike by myself in the parking lot of NextStep with the support and encouragement of the excellent physical therapists at NextStep. I can't go without the training wheels yet, but I hope to ditch the training wheels soon. Three cheers for NextStep!

No patience. Staff did not communicate with each other. To have knowledge of the patient in what they needed. Even the EMS guys that transferred my mother-in-law to the hospital said this is one of the worst places I don't even want to drive by this place.
