I gave 2 stars instead of 1 simply because their on-line web ordering system and car delivery was designed and implemented quickly and is amazing. The food however, was a major disappointment. I'm not sure if this place has sold and been reopened by new owners but our last order is our last order ever. The order was incorrect. Paid extra for fries/yams and only received the fries. Our friends however, received fries/yams that they did not order (we ordered separate times so not together). The 2 pieces of undercooked fish were stuck together in a mushy mess. And finally, the fried artichoke hearts were a pile of soft tasteless nothingness. We ate one and threw the rest away. My calamari with yam fries (substituted in for fries/coleslaw) was gigantic and enough to feel two moderately hungry people. The yam fries were like other yam fries - tasty when used with the mayo while the calamari had a clean batter with a touch of dill in it; no dirty deep frying here. Service is pretty leisurely despite what looked like a large number of staff but otherwise it's hard to criticize this place - it's good casual seafood fare in a nice spot. I overnight in Victoria pretty regularly and I make a habit of visiting this wonderful establishment as much as I can. Friday dinner for three: My Hot Thai Wrap ($11.95) with prawns was large and yummy, with crisp, good sized sauteed prawns, more garlicky than Thai hot and the melted cheese too melted to distinguish Parmesan or cheddar or just runny hot stuff. For $1.50 extra I did half salad/half fries. The salad was just OK, the dill house dressing a nice finish. My daughter and boyfriend enjoyed the halibut and chips with no qualms ($11.95). The rest of the menu reads well, and the prices are incredibly reasonable - if it is a true. For example: a Thai crab burger for $10.95? Super cheap. How much crab really? Halibut and fries were great - fish was crispy battered on the outside and perfectly cooked inside, and the yam fries tasted like actual yams. So why 3 stars? Wellll... Our bill. We asked for one 2 piece fish and yam fries with 2 extra pieces of fish. They managed to charge us the most expensive way possible - we were charged for 4 pieces of fish and a side of fries. Which came to over $7 more than just charging us for 2 orders of 2 piece fish and fries. I've been to Fish on Fifth many times, but tonight left me wondering. After seeing the waitress in my section attending to everyone else for a while, I asked if I might have a menu. "Oh, you didn't get a menu 'cause you sat down at a dirty table". Honestly, I know better than to do that, but to admonish me in front of other diners? When my order was ready, she tossed it in front of me, without leaving any cutlery. Another waiter took over soon after (I think they'd spotted what was going on) and things were fine after that. Really good yam fries, fish, and crab cake burger! My family of seven went to Fish on Fifth tonight and it was a very pleasant experience. Most of us got fish except the two of us. My sister had a crab cake burger with chowder and I had the Slammin' Salmon salad. I did not get to try the fried fish but my family said that it was very good and the portions were big and the price was reasonable. Fried fish + fries 4/5 The salad was fresh and had really good ingredients. The salmon was cooked to perfection and the mango salsa was a nice touch. The two things I didn't like was the amount of beets there were in the salad and the dill dressing. I found that the dressing really didn't fit with the salad overall and wish they had a dressing that either fit better or I would just not use the dressing at all. Slammin Salmon Salad 3/5 The crab cake burger and chowder were both superb. The price was also very great. My sister really enjoyed her crab cake burger Crab cake burger 5/5 This place also has free wifi so it's great for those who do not have cell service because they are vacationing from out of Canada. Had a horrible experience with this restaurant. They shorted our pick up order by 1/3 of our meals, and then basically accused me of making a false claim about it when I called to let them know. As for food quality, it was completely average. They said the halibut was freshly caught that day, but it was completely average at best. I didn't go in expecting every fish offering to be fresh but was disappointed to find out, only after asking, all the options besides cod are seasonal or brought in from the east coast (assuming frozen). After ordering grilled cod with Cesar and fries, it took over 40 minutes to get my meal. I noticed other patrons waiting a long time too. After reading the varied reviews we thought...what the heck...we'll give it a try. Some people seemed to like it. The result below proves once again...there is no accounting for taste. The service was prompt and courteous, but they got our order wrong. No problem...they fixed it. The fish and chips (yam fries) were less than top notch...not sure why some people rave about either of them. The fries were soggy and the chipotle mayo was insipid. (They must have just waved the chipotle over the mayo.) The batter on the fish is far from light and quite greasy. The "tartar" sauce is "unique".... I'm sorry I can't come up with a better word. The restaurant is very noisy because of the open kitchen ...the exhaust fan is loud enough to make conversations difficult. All in all I wouldn't recommend this restaurant and I will not be returning unless starvation drove me to it. read more
