    Popcorn Scallop appetizer
    Steven W.

This restaurant truly represents the community atmosphere I was looking for. It was so well suited as a local joint in the Fernwood area. This homey and friendly restaurant reminds one of those carefree days as a kid enjoying a simple and comforting food. We ordered the halibut meal and the popcorn scallops. Both were very good! Delicious fresh flavour that represents the west coast. However, although this was a very good place, it was not the absolute best I've had in town. Regardless, this is still a great place to visit on a casual and relaxing afternoon whereyou want to get away from the city for a community and friendly dining experience.

The halibut is top notch. Easy parking. Small indoor and outdoor area if you order in. Nostalgic newspaper wrapping. Good coleslaw too.

This place changed owners some time ago and the quality and deliciousness has tanked. It was very good, now it's mediocre at best. Sad.

Sorry but there is little to recommend. Cold and dimly lit, order mistake due to language barrier, food under cooked ie soggy fries.

The halibut is perfect-just like I like it. The pieces are generous. One piece is plenty for the average person. The halibut is BC caught, which is great. Tasted fresh and delicious. I like the fresh tasting coleslaw. It isn't that gluggy sweet sugar & mayo combo you get at many places. It was just a simple cut up cabbage nicely seasoned. Maybe it had a little something else on it. Expect a line whenever you go because the word is out. The wait staff was friendly and working hard to keep the line moving. We found a chair up against a narrow wooden "bar" facing the water. It was quite warm so we appreciated the shade of an umbrella.

The line can get long, but it's worth the wait. My recommendation: get the BC Halibut. Perfectly cooked, flaky, and incredibly fresh, it showcases exactly why Pacific Northwest seafood has such a great reputation. Simple ingredients, expertly prepared, and packed with flavor. Grab your food, find a seat along the waterfront, and enjoy the views while watching the boats come and go. Great food, great location, and a true Victoria classic.

=== 1. VERDICT/VALUE Decent choice of eats when in the area…read moreor on the way to the beach! Burgers seemed homemade and the fish and chips are good :) === 2. FOOD The Beachcomber ($8.57) It's a cheese-less burger, but it comes with fried onions, lettuce, and tomatoes along with ketchup and mustard. The key here is the patty itself seems to be homemade - solid choice! The Chief's Plate ($28.48 - halibut) You get two pieces of fish (cod or more expensive halibut) on top of fries with coleslaw and tartar sauce. The fish was nice - not overly battered and the fries seem to be homemade / cut from real potatoes. The slaw itself is good. Is it the best in town? Not sure, but it should be in the top five contenders on your list! Clam Chowder ($8.38 - large) This was a disappointment: sure it's chunky and it has fish, but it tasted sour - which is a little unusual for the recipe (at least compared to every other place around Canada, the US, and England, and I'm a chowder fan!) ...so I'm not sure if my bowl simply had chowder that had gone bad or if that's the way they do it here at Willows... Milk Shake ($5.14) Vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry: my little guy loved the chocolate! Kid's Ice Cream Cone ($1.52) I'm happy they offer this size at this price, as the soft-serve ice cream is great, but do we really need to give the little ones massive cones? Not in this parent's opinion :) ...so this smaller size is great. === 3. SERVICE Super friendly and patient, the lady at the front made recommendations, took our order patiently, and showed my little guy how cones and milkshakes were made :). They were reasonably fast at serving considering what seems like a perpetual line of waiting patrons that exists, particularly around mealtimes. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's really a takeout join on a street corner; however, there are four picnic tables where you could eat outside. So don't bring any large groups but if you're coming, know that wheelchairs and baby strollers will work (note: some of the sidewalk pavement is a little bumpy). Parking is street-based: on nearby streets or nearby angled parking across the way.

So when I came back with my bestie, there was no question that we had to stop here for brunch. When we arrived, we kept walking because I couldn't find the restaurant, and I was getting pretty disappointed. Then I realized they were repairing the roof, so the sign had been removed. The portions are huge! I ate until I was completely full, yet my plate still looked like I had barely touched it. Since we were staying at a hotel, we couldn't take the leftovers with us, so they ended up being shared with the seagulls. The service was absolutely wonderful--friendly, warm, and genuinely welcoming. I'm pretty sure it's family-operated because you can feel that family atmosphere among the staff. The view is beautiful, with stunning water and city scenery that makes the experience even better. If you're gluten-free, especially if you have celiac disease and miss enjoying great fish and chips, this is definitely the place for you. Highly recommended!

I got a small salmon chowder which was good but a little too much potatoes for my preference. My halibut taco was also a tad dry and just ok. My cousin ended up getting the fish & chips with a medium chowder which comes with bread. The fish & fries were really good actually. Juicy fish and the fries were fresh and just potatoes. Definitely order that. She said the oysters were good as well but we didn't get to try this time.
