TL;DR: Cooks can't read, service was poor, charge you for meals they screw up. Two stars is generous. Went for brunch. Friend ordered chicken and waffles. It was awesome, but my plate was lacking at best. Waitress straight up told us she forgot about us the first time she stopped by. No big deal. We order drinks and she delivers them- 14 mins later. Then takes our order. Doesn't check on us the entire time. We have to go to the bar and order drinks and as we are walking out we find her and she once again forgot about us. Plates arrive. I asked for light eggs in my burrito because I can only eat a tiny amount before the texture ruins a dish for me. I cut into it. 90% of it was eggs. I flag down our waitress (8 minutes after its delivered) and ask for it to be remade. She agreed it was just wrong. Second one comes out. First bite- perfect. Second bite all eggs. At this point I'm upset. 2 wrong plates and an aloof waitress. She comes back and sees the mountain of eggs. And says it wasn't right again was it. Exhausted and in need of a smoke I just give up. I ask for the check. On it I find the meal they messed up twice charged to me. Used to enjoy this place. But now it's ruined. read more

Was really looking forward to this meal as I had heard great things about this place. The food was awesome and the old fashioned could use some improvement. However, the service was terrible! The bartender acted as though it was annoying to serve us because it was busy. Our waitress was short with us when ordering. The whole experience was a little ruined by the service. Here for the first time tonight from out of town on recommendation from my son who attends school here. The food was very good when we finally got it (surf and turf and paneed chicken), but waiting over an hour for it to be served was way too long, and the waitress, although very pleasant, was rarely at our table to keep drinks full and take away empty glasses. Get 4 stars for the food and about 1-2 stars for the service. With close to $30 a plate, and the poor service, probably won't rush back and won't recommend to others. read more

From the moment we arrived our experience at 5 was sub par at best. The hostess was rude and the wait was long. When we were placed at a table in the sun that was too hot to touch the hostess was angry we asked if we could wait longer for a table inside. They sat as at the bar with wobbly chairs where we sat for 20 minutes before a waitress so much as glanced at us. Once we ordered it was another hour and a half before we got our food which wasn't even enough to fill you up. Probably my favorite place to eat when I go back to visit Tuscaloosa. If you're there on Sunday, definitely check out the brunch. The baked avocado is my absolute favorite appetizer. Make sure if you go in for the Happy hour that you sit at the bar. We went in for Happy Hour at 4:15pm on a Tuesday and was seated at a table. After ordering drinks, we were told that we couldn't take advantage of the Happy Hour special for the drinks because you had to be seated at the bar. Why wasn't I told that before ordering? My sister and I came to Tuscaloosa to visit our youngest sister for her birthday. She raved about Five so we took she and her roommate out for dinner. The atmosphere was cool and the menu was intriguing. I loved all of the chandeliers and paintings. Our waitress seemed nice, took drink and app orders. Came back 20 minutes later, after we tried to get her attention and watched her go to several other tables, ignoring us. We didn't think anything of it at first, we were catching up. She took our entree order and when we asked for a refill on cocktails and water, she only brought the cocktails, never the water. We asked a busboy who kindly brought us more water. After watching the tables next to us receive their food (we were there and ordered 30 minutes before them), we thought something was strange. I asked the hostess to send our waitress over, watched her relay the message, but our server never returned. I'm a server, I have been for five years, and if my table wanted me I would rush over. She never came so I went to the manager, who looked as though she's never received a complaint. She shrugged and claimed "they weren't prepared for this." It wasn't that busy. She returned with a gift card and shrugged again. Our server finally came back and said our food was next up in the window. If you're in the industry you should NEVER say that. Three of the four plates were delivered. She came to tell me that they ran out of chicken and that's why my salad wasn't out. She should have known that before, or when she should have rang our food in. I have never left a $0 tip but this was well deserved. Erin, that was the worst service I have ever received and your manager should have taken more responsibility. Tonight my friends and I had the worst dining experience that we've ever had. Our server, Ford, was the worst server I've ever had. We spent 2 hours constantly waiting on water, wine, appetizers, and our food. Our server never apologized for any of the inconveniences. When it came time to get our checks it took FOREVER. He also split the checks incorrectly and added an extra guest to the tickets. Overall, it was a horrible experience, and we will not be returning. read more

This is such a tough review to write. Let me start by saying I've been here about 6 or 7 times for dinner/drinks. The atmosphere is great, it gets a little crowded, but hey, that's the sign of a good restaurant. The servers have always been very friendly, the drinks are made well, and the food always comes cooked perfectly. I know what you're thinking at this point, why is it only a two star review? Well, when they first opened, they had a very diverse menu. There was an Italian option, an Asian option, and a seafood option in addition to the burger and either chicken or steak. This was nice. It was a compact menu with still plenty of variety. They then switched to this very safe (A.K.A. boring) menu. Everything is just plain/bland. Even the 'nightly specials' haven't changed in months. Please switch the menu! When you first opened, I talked with one of the managers who was excited to have the opportunity to make seasonal menus and keep the choices fresh. What happened to this? The last two times I went with friends, I couldn't decide on an entree because they all just looked so boring, so I just got edamame and drank til I went home for dinner. The food they do is good, but I can make more exciting, flavorful dishes at my house. I won't be back for dinner until there is something that looks like it's worth my money and time. Sorry. We've been to Five on a few occasions while visiting my daughter at the University of Alabama. Our last visit was this past Sunday for brunch; after waiting for a table, we were seated outside and waited 15-20 minutes before getting our drink order delivered. So we ordered appetizers and entrees at one time hoping to speed it up a bit. Apps took another 20+ minutes, and were delivered separately and without the accompanying sauces. When we finally got our entrees they were good but barely lukewarm. And that's the good part...now let me tell you about the service--it was poor at best. We've given Five Bar enough chances. Had brunch today @Five and could not be more pleased! The service was seamless and that's saying something since we were a group of ten! We all ordered beignets,shrimp and grits and the vegetarian Benedict , I heard great reviews from the entire group. I actually felt transplanted to NOLA with the jazz playing and the fun atmosphere. We tried Five Bar for lunch. It was not crowded at all. We were promptly greeted and sat. Our waiter could not have been more friendly and welcoming. Really nice atmosphere. Restaurant was very clean. My husband got Red beans and rice. It was as good as any in NOLA, maybe better. I ordered the grouper sandwich. The fish was very fresh and yummy. The most over-rated place in Tuscaloosa besides Chuck's Fish. Terrible, limited and not-so-innovative menu with options that you can find anywhere. This is not even close to fine dining. Every time I've been, the drinks are too slow on coming out, the entree is sub-par at best (when you have this limited of a menu, you better rock every dish on it), and the service is AWFUL (I'm paying more for these meals, so filling up water often, collecting silver, having a personal-ish conversation should be expected). The reason I'm giving three stars is the blueberry mojito, the baked avocado, which is absolutely amazing and delicious (but made with tiny, Sysco shrimp. Do better!), and the coffee shop is great. The morning coffee, juices, and avocado toast is awesome. The coffee shop service is great too. Well here's the thing...I love Five. Since it opened I have been numerous times and I have not had a bad meal. The minimalist menu is very trendy and upscale and the lack of options allows the kitchen to really focus on making their few entrees and appetizers great. I am not going to comment on all five entrees but I will talk about two dishes. First, the baked avocado. Words cannot do this appetizer justice. The asian influences and creaminess of the avocado work together to form a sweet, salty, and tangy dish that will make you want to order six more. Now by far my favorite entree served by Five is their Saturday night special, the Duck Tacos. A visually appealing plate comes out with two very large grilled burrito looking things filled with the most tender and flavorful duck meat imaginable, with some very tasty rice on the side. This is a basic description, I know, but I couldn't really describe it any better to you. To put it simply, IT"S GOOD. Everything at Five is great, from the delicious cheeseburger to the exceptional Pańeed Chicken.
