Terrific clam chowder. Professional bartenders. I have delved deep into their menu but look forward to my next visit

We were in town for the weekend, and really wanted to watch the Niner game. We were told by many that the local and very popular brewery would be the place to go. We went there to a packed house, had some mediocre food, and tried to watch the game on their small screens. We finally gave up and wandered around Old Town trying to find a place that was still open at the late hour of 8:00 on a Saturday night. We saw this place and their giant tv screen and walked in. The atmosphere was chill, the host super friendly. The menu looked fantastic, but unfortunately we had wasted our dinner elsewhere. Not being hungry, but not wanting to just sit there and watch the game, we ordered the bananas foster dessert and coffee. What they brought out didn't really look like bananas foster (no actual bananas!) but it was delicious (I think a warm spice cake with caramel sauce and ice-cream.) If we're ever in the area again we'll definitely return here for dinner. read more

The ambience is AWFUL. It is easily the loudest restaurant I/We have ever eaten in. Folks a screaming to be heard. It is painful to sit there. Our wait person agreed. The food is OK but the management has done nothing to help control the extreme noise. Avoid it if you value your hearing. read more

Worst food poisoning my boyfriend and I have ever had in our lives ): Honestly I've never had an experience bad enough to where I felt the need to write a negative review, and just like anyone I've had some bad experiences eating out. Hopefully this just helps make sure nice restaurants take accountability and keep their game up with customer service etc. I've been to this restaurant a few times and even preferred it for some special occasions. We had reservations at Five Eleven for Valentines day and got multiple appetizers and each got our own meal but shared everything so we both ate the same exact things that night. After we finished our meal by the time we got home we came down with horrible food poising. Vomiting amongst other symptoms that lasted strongly over 24 hours. (And yes we felt perfectly fine and healthy before our meal) The body aches and regular food poisoning symptoms went away after 24 hours but we still aren't quite back to normal. We both have had to miss multiple days of work. I called the restaurant to inform them of our food poisoning & the manager was condescending and reluctant to help. She continued to make comments hinting that we did not get it from their restaurant even though it's very clear and not hard to find out where we got it from for a list of obvious reasons. After the awkward conversation the manager didn't even offer to comp our meal. Very unfortunate for such a nice local restaurant. I'm hoping this review helps with making sure this outcome doesn't happen to anyone else. read more

We had the most incredible experience!! Everything was so delicious & wonderful! We started out with Truffle Risotto Balls (not seeing them currently on the menu, as I write this review) but they were so good!!! We ordered the Filet Mignon, Steelhead, & the Fried Chicken! The Fried Chicken was HANDS down the BEST Friend Chicken we have ever had! So perfect & not great at all! Only suggestion would be to keep the kitchen door closed.... This place was well-reviewed, so we tried it on our one night in Eureka. We had 7:30 reservations on a Thursday night, and were seated right away. The ambiance was a bit strange, with the very 80s "modern" decor, local art on the walls, and inexplicably loud music. The bartender made me a decent martini, and our waiter was friendly and solicitous. Our Japanese pear salad app came quickly and was the best thing we ate. My daughter had the bolognese with housemade pasta that she liked the flavor of, but the texture was slightly off (overcooked and a bit mushy). I had two more apps as my entree: the clams and mussels in tomato saffron broth were stone cold and virtually flavorless (except for the grilled garlic bread), and the mushroom polenta was ok, just really heavy. My second martini sat on the bar so long that the waiter took it off our bill. Needless to say, we skipped dessert. read more

When travelling, I frequently see overpriced restaurants trying to make "fancy" food that is underwhelmingly basic. I often cut my losses by getting a down-and-dirty cheap pizza. Well, I couldn't do that every night and decided to gamble on Five Eleven. I didn't crap out. Playful to label a dish as "fish & chips" that is smoked salmon spread and potato chips ("gaufrettes" on the menu) but perhaps too confusing for some. This pretentiousness made me nervous but the combination of spread and chip along with trout roe just makes sense. This best dish of the night was immediately followed by the polenta crostini appetizer which was the worst dish of the night. The block of bland polenta was too thick. The polenta was grilled which didn't provide a crisp exterior as the term "crostini" suggests. The block was topped with barely aged parmesan cheese. The entrees were big portions. The grilled steelhead was a generous fillet, high quality, and perfectly cooked. Set under the salmon, the lobster risotto and lobster sauce lacked lobster flavor. The duck confit macaroni and cheese was a big and pleasing bowl of creamy shell pasta. The duck was not slowly cooked in fat but deep fried which gives the meat a turkey rather than duck flavor (which happens to me all the time when I cook duck). The menu stated the bread crumbs and "quacklings" but nothing resembling either were in the dish. Unintentionally, everything we ordered used cream which created a repetitive one-note profile. The kitchen shouldn't forget the importance of adding balancing acids which not only lightens the dish but mentally fools diners into "thinking" they can eat more. Like it's hard to drink one sugary cocktail because it's heavy and sweet but easy to drink two refreshing and vibrant cocktails. With reservations recommended, we showed up at seven eleven (not the convenience store) at Five Eleven but wasn't needed on a Tuesday night. read more

First of all in these Covid times, the restaurant was super in Covid protocol. Great social distancing on the tables, mask wearing mandate enforcement, diligent table sanitation. Now on to the food----- The beet salad. Crisp tasteful beets and avocado covered in a light creamy dressing. The halibut and clam entree was just busting with flavor complimented with grilled polenta cakes, shashito peppers, tomatoes,and a sprinkling of corn. Ok so Humboldt is suuuuuuper hard up for good food. And good atmosphere. I'm saddened by the people who think this place is "elegant" or "sophisticated". Yikes!!!! It's so gross inside. Feels grimey the second you walk in. The ripped up upholstery on the chairs is faaaaaaar from acceptable. It's trashy at best. And highly unsanitary. And terrible service. They would not accommodate our party of 8 adults and kids by adding a few extra chairs for our children. We happily left. It was actually a relief to not be trapped there. They should be less concerned with the Fire Marshall and more concerned with the health inspector. read more

I've been meaning to give 511 a try for a while now and this past Sunday evening proved to be the day for it. Located on 2nd Street in old town this modern eatery is both elegant and casual. We arrived shortly after opening and the place was quite. We were seated promptly and our waiter, Kenny was professional, friendly and engaging. He made us feel welcome and appreciated. I had read reviews mentioning him by name, and as luck would have it - this young man lived up to my expectations. We had great conversations about the wine list, its vintners and our personal favorites. He was well versed on the menu and made suggestions when asked. We started with a dozen of the local raw Bucksport oysters fresh out of Humboldt bay - offered a couple of ways - I took mine on the half shelf; these little germs were in one word - delicious. A dozen was not enough. 27$ a dozen. They offer small plates, as well as entrees - we opted for a couple of the small plates; the Roasted Brussel sprouts with smoked bacon and shaved Gruyere is a great treat and quite filling enough for 2 or 3 to split with other small plates. As well, we chose one of the specials for the evening - a Wild mushroom Polenta Crustini - it was light and flavorful and topped with wonderful fresh mushrooms, I got a few bits - as it was so tasty my wife kept most of it to herself, her words - some of the best grilled Polenta ever. And we decided to try one of their brick oven fired pizzas - my wife loves basic cheese pizzas, so we went for their Basic Cheese brick fire - with the house marinara and three cheeses - Romano, Parmesan and Mozzarella. It was good, not great. The crust had great flavor and a nice char browning to it, but the marinara sauce was lacking - again it was a good pizza, not a wow let's order this again pizza. The small but tight wine list offering reds, whites and sparklings in a wide range of price points has some real winners on it at this writing, though subject to change. After perusing the list and a brief conversation with Kenny, I opted for the Joseph Jewel Pinot Noir 2010 Russian River @ 54$ it was the gem of the evening and a real treat at only 200 cases available, my recommendation and undervalued. Our second bottle, we went with a Macphail Anderson Valley 2011 pinot noir @ 58$ also a small run vintage as well, it was a wonderful Pinot and I'm positive if I had not drank the Joseph Jewel first, it would have seemed splendid - but that did not happen and my hands down fav for the night was the Joseph Jewel. For dessert we finished with a Humboldt Cypress Grove Chevre Cheesecake, it was one of the best cheesecakes I have had, the goat cheese finish on the cheesecake was an interesting and tasty twist from what one traditionally expects. My wife went for the Duck egg creme burlee, that we had heard so much about as it is one of her favorite desserts - it was delicious and she said very fluffy, rich and creamy and that it was some of the best she had had. All in all - this is a solid eatery and bar, I would have given this restaurant 5 stars except for the pizza was that off in comparison to the rest of the meal and overall experience. Well worth a visit and we plan to return again for dinner. There are several entrees on the menu that look worth a try, A dozen local raw oysters, two small plates, a pizza, two outstanding bottles of wine and two very good desserts - 225$ with a generous tip, not cheap but well worth it, and we will be back. I had the Antioxidant as a drink, blueberry vodka, need I say more! Jim had a classic martini! We started with a polenta crostini! The flavors were awesome! Showed up at 8:14PM. All information shows that they close at 9pm. We knew we were arriving 45 mins to closing and we're planning on ordering a drink and an easy dinner. Sign on door and at counter said "closed". Server ignored us while we stood at the counter for 2 mins or so. Wanted to ensure they really were closed and ended up just walking away. I'm in town for work and one of my longtime friends who has lived in Eureka for years recommended Five Eleven. I called into the restaurant at 7:30pm (90 minutes before closing) and asked to place a to go order. The hostess told me they were super busy and put me on hold to ask the kitchen if they could make my order (acting very inconvenienced). After a couple of minutes of being on hold she told me they could take my order and told me it would be ready in 20 minutes. When I arrived at 8pm for pickup the restaurant was mostly empty. I checked in with the hostess and gave her my credit card for the order. She comes back with the charged bill and mentions there is a 15% gratuity charge for all to go orders!!! I travel for a living and order take out probably 100 times a year. This is the first time I've experienced a restaurant charging gratuity for to go orders. During Covid I started leaving 10% tips for to go orders to make sure restaurant workers still got something. I can't for the life of me understand how restaurants could include an automatic 15% gratuity for take out orders when there is no service. Tip culture in this country has gotten out of control. To the owners of this place: How about you pay your workers a living wage and stop taking advantage of your customers???.
