Had an excellent dinner while staying at the hotel recently. Exceptional service, even though the restaurant dinibg room was closed they set up a private dining room for my party of four. Inside the hotel, the restaurant was not open the night of our dinner, but the staff made a private place for us to sit and enjoy our conversation and libations with a great meal. The food is very good and the service some of the very best in the area. A concise menu, done very well. The menu is not extensive but the food they do is presented beautifully and prepared with attention to detail and thoughtfulness. 4 Stars - If you are staying at the Inn or just wanting an elevated dining experience in an exceptional locale. Phenomenal food, wine and staff! We have gone a few times in the past but last time was special, the staff always has great conversations about the presentation and Diana (our waiter) felt like family instantly. I hate giving bad reviews and only do so when I feel a situation needs to be considered before booking a reservation. We were staying at Carterhouse so it was a no brainer to spend out anniversary at 301. We came down to the lobby for a pre dinner cocktail and the bar was having problems as the bartender called in sick. We were seated in the lobby and the drink order was taken, as we had arrived 30 minuted in advance of out reservation we thought we would have plenty of time to enjoy the fireplace and a cocktail. Unfortunately the drinks took 20 minutes, by this time the lady in the restaurant was noticeably frustrated as we were not hurrying in and she brought us the menu's to order from the couch... We did as it was now 8:05 and our reservations were at 8:00. I asked to see the wine list and was advised to order several wines as many were out of stock (Wine Spectator Awarded List?), which we did. After 7 attempts they finally found 1 bottle, but during the selection process they started service which I declined and sent the first course back as I preferred to have wine with the meal, not after.. The meal itself was good, but the second deserts were ready we were offered seating back out in the lobby by the fire, which we accepted as we were the only people in the restaurant and the server obviously wanted us out so they could close. We sat down by the fire and were approached by another patron accusing us of moving her drink and desert to another table so we could sit next to the fireplace. I explained that we were seated by the server and we did not move her things. Uncomfortable to say the least. Overall we were rushed through every aspect of our dinner and put in an uncomfortable situation as we were given the Bums Rush. Dinner with wine and drinks was over $300 for two. Vetting your wine list, being honest with Wine Spectator and when you say you are open until 9:30, don't rush me. Michelin prices with Chili's service, a no go for me! A gem! The tasting menu was absolutely delicious tonight. Funny, my daughter had the house made pasta with butter and didn't finish so I gave it to my husband and he was in love. It was phenomenal! The staff at Carter is amazing, friendly and efficient. Had an awesome bottle of wine and their wine cellar is envious. We are staying in a Victorian cottage which is so fun and this has been a real blast! Cudos to Tony who made me feel like long time friends! We have dined here several times over the years and all previous experiences have been worthy of 5 stars. But, we must have caught them on a bad night on our most recent meal. There were several minor issues but the Brussels Sprouts that we ordered to be served with our entrees came after we had completed the entrees. The accompanying photo will show that they came complete with some aluminum foil, presumably from the cheese that was served with the sprouts. In addition the wine list referred to a Calistoga dry rose by the glass. It literally was undrinkable. This restaurant has one of the most impressive wine lists in all of California and I picked a real loser. As I say, it was probably just a bad night. It is worth noting that the restaurant "comped" the late arriving Brussels Sprouts. read more

The truffle fries are a meal in themselves. I was staying at the attached hotel. There were locals coming the bar and restaurant and were obviously regulars - which tells me it's good! Happily Restaurant 301 is back. We've been going here for the past 15 when traveling the NorCal coast, and while they are not yet back to a full menu, the food quality and service are back to there usual great levels. We split a nice BLT salad, but needed to request a plate to split. The wine list was impressive; listings by varietal, appellation and several different vintages were all described . Wow!!! Until....our first and second selections were not available....:( We were told to select "2 or 3" to see if they were available. We were trying to select a Pinot Noir, since we had brought a Cab for later. Unfortunately, our server did not bring additional wine glasses for Pinot, which we wanted to drink before the Cab; a bit awkward that we had to retrieve additional wine glasses on our our from the bar. Entrees of salmon, filet, lamb shank and duck were impeccable (larger plate for cutting the duck would be helpful). Wonderful food, but service needs improvement. read more

This place is definitely upscale for Eureka. The lobby (a hotel too) is comfortable, cozy and elegant. There's a very nice bar off to one side. The restaurant strives for a cosmopolitan vibe, quality dinnerware, Biedermier style seating, and the layout meanders in the Victorian building's ground floor. The menu is very interesting and creative, with broad taste from seafood to serious meat dishes. I started with a martini that was cold and peefectly mixed. For an appetizer I ordered the 'Fruits of the Sea' a combination of squid and crab in two patties with sauces. It was well prepared and delicious. My main course was the 'Field and Fowl', lamb and duck pieces and accompaniments. Both the lamb and duck were wonderful and the duck is reminiscent of Chicken Kiev. I did not regret either choice and thoroughly enjoyed the meal, even for the high price. Service was fun, competent, and professional; although there were a couple of servers that seemed a bit confounding. Perhaps a small operation means everyone pitches in for whatever is needed. The only drawback was that the room was overly warm and the temperature uncomfortable, stuffy without any air circulation. read more

It was the service that killed it, honestly. It was almost rated a 3, it took so long to dine. And it seemed like each server was on their own; No one was helping each other. It's a gorgeous place, wine list is excellent, food is pretty darn good when averaged out. But man, they need to double the staff. While some of the signature cocktails were not available, we enjoyed what got (and learned that local vodka is actually pretty good). We somehow landed a bottle of wine retailing for 120 dollars for 50, and it was of course amazing. We sampled each of the oyster sauces wth raw oysters and they each were delicious. The prime rib was excellently cooked, and the gnocchi were pretty darn good. We'd return, maybe on an evening with no other engagements. read more

When I first moved up here, over a year and a half ago, I was complaining about the lack of good food (okay, more like bitching and moaning). The locals tell me that I haven't been eating in the right places. So I compiled a list of places that the locals said were must-eats, and Restaurant 301 was on that list. I finally made the trek. Appetizers: Brussel sprouts with bacon, walnuts, blue cheese and apples: brussel sprouts were cooked perfectly, and the bacon was very flavorful. The combination of all five ingredients was the perfect start to a meal. French onion soup: Nothing extraordinary here. A very straightforward rendition of french onion soup. Entrees: Venison (more like venison wellington): I had to settle for the venison because they were out of the Field and Fowl (at 7:30pm on a Saturday night?). The venison was cooked well, but the outer pastry part was a bit blackened on the bottom, which had me wondering if that was their intention or not. It came only with five to six carrots on the side. For $35, I most likely would not order this again... perhaps if they accompanied it with something else like creamy polenta or some sort of potato, the dish would feel substantial enough to pay that price again. Wagyu brisket bolognese: the husband got this dish... for reasons unknown. I can tell, however, that the pasta was freshly made, but unfortunately I feel like the wagyu aspect of the beef is lost in the way that it is prepared. Now, if you say wagyu ribeye or something else not smothered in sauce, then I can see why I would order it. But in this instance, it's more of a namesake than anything. You can't really TELL you're eating wagyu brisket that's been torn into little shreds. And for people who perhaps were complaining about the Kobe ribeye not being up-to-par, they list on their menu that it is American Kobe. If you are unaware of the distinction between the two, you should probably look up the differences, as American Kobe is not nearly close to the standard of true Kobe. Again, namesake. The service was outstanding, and I have absolutely no complaints there. Wine list is definitely extensive, but a bit pricey. For Eureka/Humboldt standards, it is one of the top restaurants in the city, if not county. However, I think I must try it once more and order different things to truly gauge the restaurant, as it wasn't really as impressive to me as I was made to believe. read more

Well, I'm underwhelmed. We had a reservation and when we arrived, we were shuffled to a "private dining room". Are you kidding me? We were put in a room with no windows, no atmosphere, no candles or flowers on the tables. I eventually nicknamed this room "the afterthought" Attached is the photo of my view. It took 49 minutes for our appetizers, which were good. Then and hour and a half for our main course. I got the chicken which was rather dry and bland. My husband got the bolognese which he thought was wonderful. Dessert was the best part. Amazing ice cream and an Opera Cake which was good. read more

They only really way overcooked my duck. Unfortunately, it's a mistake that could not be so easily forgiven at a restaurant in this caliber. I shouldn't have to wait for an hour for my entree, only to be served a plate of dry out duck breast. My partner seems to have better luck with his pork chop. This was our very first fine dining experience and we were quite pleased. We did the 5 course disvovery menu, so that we could try a bit of everything. I'm so glad we did! My husband's bar drinks were wonderful as well. The one disappointment was the ambiance and decor. The restaurant is in a historic building, but they haven't highlighted that at all. There was mismatched paint on the wall, cheap curtains, and cheap table decor. The quality of the decor didn't match the quality of the food at all. I had been wanting to try this place for some time since relocating to the area. It had a reputation for fine dining, and it does come with a lofty price tag (at least for the area), so I waited until a holiday came around in order to justify the expense to myself. For Thanksgiving I booked in advance, which was easy enough. I knew they were offering a pre-fixe and wine tasting menu, so I thought this would be an ideal opportunity to see the best that they had to offer during the holiday times. The hotel lobby itself is well appointed and very pleasant. The dining room occupies a corner spot that looks out on the street. The bar is up behind the check-in area, with a view over the lobby and dining area. That night things were festooned in holiday cheer and the ambiance was very pleasant. When we arrived our reservations were honored and we were informed that we would be seated not in the dining area, not in the bar area, but in a small, windowless room across the hall from the bar. This room contained a faux fireplace on the back wall, and numerous clippings of flattering articles from glossy magazines on the walls. Given the amount of money I was going to drop, and the occasion, I requested if we could be reseated somewhere else. I was told that they could not accommodate this request. So, for a Thanksgiving dinner that cost me over $300 I sat in a room that was papered with write ups that touted the greatness of the hotel, its owner, and the town of Eureka; none of which was visible to me. Color me disappointed, in spades. For what it's worth, the food and wine were very good. The service from wait staff was excellent. I just can't believe that they would actually sit people in that room and call it good, and so I would caution that if you come here to dine to be aware and request your seating carefully. read more

In a beautiful Victorian building the 301 is situated in old town Eureka. It's a bit pretentious but I think that's why I enjoy eating there so much. I have been meaning to go there for quite some time, but finally I had the best excuse of all; a birthday celebration, and voila, we went to celebrate. The service is quiet, relaxed, and friendly but professional. The food was exceptional and the bill was expensive, of course the majority of it was from our cocktails. Late review! My husband and I celebrated our anniversary with Claudia as our server, phenomenal on all aspects of the experience. Everyone was so kind and attentive! The food was insanely delicious from the flavors to the presentation, the cocktails were innovative and delightfully exciting, the atmosphere was beautiful and calming with just the right amount of privacy, and they were sweet enough to comp our dessert! We made reservations and got all dressed up for a meal at a nice restaurant with out of town friends. We were immediately greeted by the bartender and then the hostess came to seat us, it was all so beautiful. I wish I could comment about the food, but when we told the hostess about a black pepper allergy she said that another person with the same allergy came in two days prior and that there was "nothing on the menu without black pepper because the kitchen prepares and preseasons everything ahead of time", not a plain steak or plain salad or even dessert was offered as a potential something safe to eat. She then proceeded to get water to pour for the table and fully expected us to stay to eat. However, we politely had to leave. Since one person could eat absolutely nothing from the entire menu, the other three people refused to stay to eat an expensive meal in front of that person. The hostess was nice about it and understood completely. We've dined at many expensive places that could offer at least one or two black pepper free options, so we're disappointed that they do not. We are very happy they knew the menu though since we avoided an allergic reaction! read more

The food we got was okay. Restaurant was out of so many things that ordering was a challenge. They even ran out of bread! The waiter who delivered the list of unavailable menu items was also off-putting. No one was present to seat us at our reservation time, and the hotel staff had to fetch a waiter to take us to our table. He arrived smelling strongly of cigarette smoke, then rudely squatted down beside our table to announce the shortages. I also saw him in the lobby petting a large dog moments before bringing our food; I'm a dog person and wasn't completely disgusted but I can't imagine he isn't required to at least wash his hands in between touching a strange dog and handling food. We ordered the $21 scallop appetizer, which came with just one scallop. The fish in my entree was undercooked, and came with balls of deep fried potato that were good but underwhelming in a $41 entree. Anywhere else! I've had better service/food at every other restaurant in town. Wow. This restaurant is a gem and it's shocking that it's not packed every night! Dinner starts with a delicious housemade bread and butter. We got a cup of the asparagus soup which was divine. I didn't share. We also ordered the mushroom tart which was highly recommended by our fabulous breakfast server extraordinare Nicole. She wasn't kidding. It was incredible. We also ordered the soufflé which was tasty too. Next up was the pork chop which was perfectly cooked and so delicious that we took turns gnawing on the bone. Our servers Noah and Jason were kind and courteous. Both of them are passionate about the food. Restaurant 301 is a lovely setting with young, sweet and ambitious servers and a lot of pretense. It seems like the kind of place professors go and have their napkins folded on their laps. The food was above average. I was pretty annoyed by the restaurant honestly, as we were traveling, and had a child with us. I had called and spoken in detail with the concierge regarding the menu, since we had a loooong drive, I just wanted to pop in, have some quick appetizers or happy hour and get back on the road and they agreed that was okay and even told me some of the menu items. When we arrived, the items were not available and we had to sit for dinner service which was a production, massively overpriced for a short stop and the portions of the seafood items were minuscule (the crabcake was thimble sized and not lump). I may not have minded had we had a leisurely date night planned, but we were very clear and I was frustrated. I actually had to go somewhere else to get a second meal as the ONLY item on the menu I could eat was a $40 piece of fish. I had two appetizers and they were pea sized and not memorable. Again, had the person on the phone tried less hard to get us in, and considered the conversation, we would have happily come in another time for a leisurely date night, but encouraging travelers with kids on a road trip to come in, out of their way, for items not there was not particularly good service. That said, the ambiance was cute, sleepy, across between a hotel lobby and an elegant dining room. It would be nice for a planned, very slow paced meal. read more
