Today we were greeted by a guy who seemed to be sleeping in the back and couldn't stop yawning and saying how tired he was while taking our order and while making the ice cream. Came here to get my sweet fix. Walking in, the place looks a little worn down. Doesn't look too clean either. But I wanted to try the taiyaki and ice cream. Didn't know it was a rolled ice cream (generally not a fan) but the Thai tea flavor was not bad. It definitely had the full Thai tea taste. The taiyaki was just meh. The dough was ok but the filling (red bean) consistency seemed off. I didn't finish it. The menu was a bit confusing as well. Everything seemed handwritten and all over the place. This is such a random spot, but I'm not necessarily complaining. You've got the very American feeling ice cream area. But then you've also got the counter selling taiyaki and tteokbokki while Kpop is playing, the walls are decorated with BTS, and they have a self serve ramen station next to Korean drinks. Kind of a one stop shop I guess lol. But I was disappointed to find that they were not selling taiyaki at the time, which is what I really wanted to try. So ice cream it was. Only to then find out they were also out of the yogurt base. So we ended up ordering the whole milk base. While the ice cream came out pretty and delicious, I was not expecting for them to roll it the way they did. Other yelp pictures had indicated it would be in scoops. And the rolls aren't a bad thing but it was in such a small container that it was so hard to eat without making a huge mess. read more

Where do I start? So this place has a variety of things. Their rolled ice cream is quite unique. It's similar to those rolled ice creams you see on the Internet but they just don't roll it. They mix the toppings in and chop it upm it's very interesting to watch. They also have a wonderful selection of flavors. I'm a huge fan of the lavender.  They also sell tteobokki, a Korean rice cake and fishcake mix. It's similar tasting to what I made when I was first learning to make the dish. I can't say it's amazing, but it's VERY REASONABLY PRICED. I wouldn't bash it. They also sell various kimchi's and even japchae, but I haven't tried those yet. Their taiyaki is made to order and seriously a star of this store. Yes taiyaki is just fish shaped pancakes with a filling, but they're fresh, crispy, and generous with their filling. Would recommend! I would take a pass on the onigiri. The ride is hard and it's probably been in the counter fridge for a couple of days. It's not bad, but I wouldn't get it again.  Everything I've eaten here tends to be on the sweeter side, so if you're into sweeter foods then this place would be for you.  The ambience of this place is less of a cafe and more of a quick service sit down. They have kpop playing on a TV by the door, and decorated with children's coloring pages. Quaint.  To be honest it feels like parents opened this store for their child to try to run a business. Is what I get from it. However, I must say that the food is SO WELL PRICED. I keep coming back because it's such a good deal and they do well with their desserts. Very eclectic sort of place with deceivingly good ice cream! Five FX has great reviews on Yelp which is the main reason I wanted to check it out, and it did not disappoint. You can only choose one flavor at a time with up to 2 sugary candy or fruit toppings. I got Reese's PB cups and m&ms with white chocolate ice cream and it was delicious! The friends I was with all got fruit or Oreos in their ice creams and also really enjoyed. The ice cream was very very creamy and rich and was just (as I said deceivingly) high quality and delicious. Despite the inside being very odd, I will 100% be back for more ice cream! read more

My wife and I were on that side of town and saw the Five Fx Ice Cream Shop and decided we had to try it. Honestly we were disappointed in the ice cream. I got the apple-banana with a waffle cone. I decided to try it with almond milk (because I'm lactose intolerant). It didn't have much flavor at all. It barely had the banana flavor and tasted zero apple. Tasted real watered down. The waffle cone was good and good flavor. My wife got the lavender ice cream with strawberries and almond milk. She had two bites and said it was very watered down. She didn't even finish it which was a waste of money. Really not sure what we should have gotten. We both felt the decor for the shop was old and didn't have any theme other than maybe Korean. Had some Korean boy band posters on the wall and tv playing Korean boy band videos but couldn't hear the sound. It was just ok and does have potential. First time experiencing Tiyaki and it tasted amazing I am a big fan foodie for anything waffle, so this combination between waffle and melted Nutella was delish! The nice Korean lady in the shop was super adorable and made our ice cream by hand; in which, I wasn't aware of them doing that there but it added to the experience as both flavors were what we anticipated Definitely better than a ColdStone ice cream! This is one of my favorite local icecream shops! I love that you can add any milk substitute and it makes a more creative flavor combo. There are so many different flavors and they make it in front of you. You can also choose 1 fruit topping to mix into the ice cream, or 2 non fruit toppings. I LOVE the blackberry flavor ice cream with coconut milk. it tastes so fresh and has a hint of coconut. The serving size is good and even a small cup is pretty generous. I also love the butter pecan flavor ice cream! The Taiyaki is also good, it's a fish-shaped bread dessert with red bean or Nutella filling! The place could use a refresh. Lots of items were out. I can deal with that, the problem was the staff who would not make eye contact and answer questions. The menus are confusing to kids. The ice cream was good but the way the signs were was overwhelming. It took a minute to figure things out. You have to tell them sooo many options--ice cream flavor, type of ice cream and then toppings. It would have been so much more helpful if I would have been given a form to choose and fill out. My husband was also overwhelmed with the ordering. I'm glad there was no one else in line or we may have left. What is going on with this place.. this once used to be the Asian dessert spot to go to. One look inside this place and there is no doubt that it is very much neglected. Menus are handwritten and taped on the wall.. some are hanging on the ceiling.. some items are just scribbled/crossed out if no longer available. I feel like there are post-it notes everywhere. This place looks like the live version of a chicken scratch notepad someone used with personal notes and scribbles all over the place. Nothing is tidy, nothing appears clean, and it's just a big hot mess all over the place. I don't even wanna mention cleanliness. It's quite questionable how they truly keep the place clean. Everything is stained, burnt, greased.. I'll stop there but you get the picture. We only ordered taiyakis today and I have attached a picture of what that looks like. If that isn't the epitome of "we don't care anymore", then I don't know what is. Very surprised this place is still running but maybe because it's the only taiyaki place here. Love this little place - was craving ice cream despite the cold weather but wanted something not so standard for flavors. This place ticked the box with taro! Hubby got coconut which was also tasty. I've been to this establishment once before, and it was super busy. This time it was relatively slow. Maybe because it is the dead of winter. Originally, I came here to get the rolled ice cream, but they don't do that here. The ice cream was nice and light. You have an option to pick 2 non fruit choices or 1 fruit choice as a topping. The ice cream was then mixed on the cold stone with your selection of cream base. The ice cream was also served in a waffle cone at no additional cost. Also, available were Taiyaki which are fish shaped pastry with filling in them. They had a couple of flavors I would've wanted to try, cream cheese & taro, if we weren't so full but they also had savory flavors if you're into that. I want to say with tip, it was a little over $3. One was perfect enough for us two unless you have a huge sweet tooth. The batter is perfect, crispy and was hot due to it being made to order. Well...I never thought the day would come when I would rate an ice cream shop below a 4. I have always questioned people who would rant and rave about how bad an ice cream shop can be and no sane person should ever put it below 4. The people who would rate an ice cream shop below 4 were reserved for people who hate rainbows, hugs, and takes candy from babies and little kids. Five(fx) has a real novel idea of making ice cream when ordered. It also makes it possible for those who are lactose intolerant to order ice cream because of the different non-dairy bases Five(fx) offers. Because of those reasons, I actually upped it a star. But my chocolate ice cream made with a whole milk base was among the most unflavorable ice cream I have ever had in my life. Thank goodness I chose to add peanut butter to it or it wouldn't have had much taste of all. Also, it was more expensive than $#&÷*÷&*%# Baskin Robbins. Baskin Robbins! A small was $4.99...of unflavorful ice cream. Maybe chocolate was not the flavor to choose. And I am being more dramatic here for effect. I would say ice cream from Five(fx) is slightly better than no ice cream. But for the price and the lack of flavor, I will pass unless I am with a group of people. read more

We have been here twice already and can't wait to go back and try their other flavors. The first time we came here, I tried the mocha flavor and it was sooo good! I would've added some nuts but my husband and I are sharing a large cup and he is not a fan. My nephew ordered chocolate and my cousin had the green tea, they were both yummy! So the next time we visited, I got the green tea and made sure to add some almonds and walnuts! I was in ice cream heaven! They were also very generous with their serving. For a small size, you get 3 scoops of ice cream with 2 free toppings. But you need to add $.50 if you want a fruit added. The place is small, typical of an ice cream house. This was a cute ice cream shop. Loved that they also make taiyaki. These are fish shaped waffles stuffed with your choice of filling. We ordered some to take to my parents. We went with red bean and taro (ube) taiyaki. My daughter got herself an apple cinnamon taiyaki for later as well. I tasted a piece. Soooooo good! I'm not a big sweets person but the taro taiyaki could become a problem. Lol Totally worth the calories. My oldest also ordered a child size scoop of lychee ice cream in a waffle cone and my youngest chose mango ice cream in a cup. Sad state of affairs at an old time favorite. I use to frequent this place a couple of years ago. It was VERY clean and had great service. Today it was dingy and the bathroom didn't even work and looks like it hasn't in a while. The glass panes in front of where the make the ice cream had a film from neglect all over it. The tables had that sticky nasty layer on it. My taiyaki had burn flecks topping it. The worker didn't even take the time - like the use to - to scrap the excess batter from around the fish. Quint lil-ice cream store. If you haven't been here, you've haven't experience the way challenge your taste buds. They mix up a concoction of whatever you come up with and pour the substance onto a cold stainless top. While the creamy delight is feeling, the employees are scraping, and chiseling your happiness into what become solid ice cream. They can use any milk that you want, they have so many flavors to make your ice cream, and they make it right in front you. I just think that is so cool but I'm also a sucker for hibachi so... There are also these things called taiyaki which freaked me out at first. They're pretty much sweet waffles in the shape of a fish (the part that I wasn't too sure about) but you can get filling inside like in the Nutella or peanut butter or if you're really hungry they even have a ham egg and cheese taiyaki. I asked the guy if he could mix Nutella and peanut butter for me, and he said they don't usually mix but he would do it for me. Hehe I'm special. This totally helped the cookie craving. Five Fx gets a four from me primarily because of the lackluster customer service. They really could use a lot of development in that arena. Of the people we came in contact with the worst was the first person with whom we interacted. It did get somewhat better thereafter. Compared to the superb product Fx brings the service was horrible. Bottom line go for the delicious ice cream make to order and waffles et al, but know you will be doing this while giving up some basic service expectations. read more

I don't usually leave reviews of this caliber, but this place was so unsanitary that it's honestly laughable. One of the first things we asked for is the shops social media, which they informed was non-existent. Their menus are written in sharpie on poster boards, hanging from the ceiling tile without pictures. Some menu options appear written in pen on sticky notes plastered below them. The tables were so filthy that another customer offered wet wipes from their purse because they saw us using napkins and hand sanitizer to try to clean our table. Though the employees witnessed us attempting to clean it at no point did they offer to clean themselves. They keep their spoons in a dusty aluminum container on the counter. The cashier was noticeably sick and coughing/sneezing all over the place while talking on the phone. We ordered ice cream and taiyaki but left immediately once they served us our ice cream because we didn't want to bother waiting for the sneeze-particle -infested taiyaki the employee was making WITHOUT gloves nor a mask. No we didn't bother asking for a refund nor taking pictures because we just wanted to get out of there. Normally, I have no issue requesting a refund but I didnt want to cause a whole commotion about having to explain to an employee why I didnt want to eat a $3 taiyaki that was potentially and mistakenly sneezed on The ice cream isn't great quality, but it does taste good. Tastes a bit watered-down, almost literally. Even so, the ice cream itself has potential to be great if this place can sharpen up on its cleanliness, sanitation, and presentation. Sadly, flavor is all this place has going for it. I don't believe that the employees are intentionally neflectful because though they were short with their words, they were nice. Overall thoughts: I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Especially a germaphobe. "You get what you pay for" couldn't even salvage the experience at this place. Went for the first time because I'd read great reviews for this place. I won't go back. Staff was incredibly rude. I came in and was the only customer in the shop. 2 employees were sitting on the back on their phones, and the boy manning the counter was laying his head on a food prep counter. I tried to call ahead because I wanted to place a relatively large to-go order, but no one answered the phone. Got there and told them I wanted to order around 16 taiyaki to take to a party. Was met with incredulity, the employee scoffed at me and made a snide remark if I was going to eat them all "for here", and commented the order would be pricy. Didn't care about price, but kept getting negative remarks about the order, as the boy went to the back to complain to the 2 girls in the back about my order. No one else in the restaurant, I could hear every word. They made half the order, and then stated they wouldn't have enough batter to complete the order, so I ended up getting half the order refunded anyway even after they fussed about making the large order. On top of it all, the place was filthy. I don't know how this place can stay open when the employees they have obviously don't want customers to be there. read more

This place is very confusing. I had no idea what I was supposed to order at the counter - just the ice cream flavor, the size, the toppings, the type of bowl...what??? There are menus posted of the ice cream and taiyaki flavors but not the toppings. I ordered a small (4.99) piña colada, which had a milk base and coconut and pineapple mixed in. When my order was called, I walked over to watch them "make it". The base was poured onto a cold plate and the liquid froze. I was asked if I wanted toppings mixed in. For no additional cost, you can apparently get two regular toppings or one fruit topping added. I chose strawberries. That was mixed into the frozen piña colada concoction on the cold plate. Then, I was asked if I wanted a waffle cone, waffle bowl, or regular cup. I inquired about any additional charges for any of those options and there were none. I got a waffle bowl. As I waited for the apple cinnamon taiyaki ($1.99) that I'd also ordered, I began eating the ice cream, which was melting at lightening speed, far faster than I could scoop it into my mouth. The flavor was alright and the level of sweetness was mild. The waffle bowl got soggy fast and it fell apart. I guess I don't really get the excitement here. It seems that things would be much more efficient if a scoop of already made and frozen ice cream was just sprinkled with the toppings that they offer. Watching them mix together chocolate base and chocolate sprinkles, for instance, seems a bit boring. I've been to places that freeze ice cream bases with liquid nitrogen, which is a similar concept, but the creations were much more creative. The taiyaki here was good, however, and it was reminiscent of what I had in Tokyo. I can't see myself running back here but if I want ice cream and if I'm in the area, I may stop back by. read more
