Expectations. They're important to manage. Tonight we drove past a out-the-parking-lot line for both Culvers and B-Bops to park at Five Guys. When we arrived there was a big line with two employees. BUT- It's a Sunday night that's cold and dark, and half of Ankeny wants to eat out, so expectations are to wait. I want to give a HUGE shout out to that lovely black woman that had a smile and a "I'll be right with you" then hustles back to the grill, realizing she can be additionally EFFICIENT by asking us how many patties we're gonna order so she can get those going with the others she's throwing on. (High Five to her) the there's the big white guy packing bags and making fries like he's a pro, and no soggy fry shortcuts come from him. (This crunch loving fry girl thanks you!) I had a great dinner, just about as fast as it could be made for me because of these two awesome people who didn't get overwhelmed or ticked off. read more

I honestly vowed never to eat here again. I was talked into it. I'm glad I was! I ordered online for pickup in store. Bacon cheeseburgers, Cajun fries and regular fries. SO VERY GOOD! Smothered with mayo (I like it like that!) crispy bacon, fries cooked and seasoned to perfection. Very fast....walked in, let them know of my order, they dropped my fries in the oil. 6 minutes later I was walking out the door with piping hot fries. Which is perfect since we live 20 minutes away. Service was excellent. Greater right as I entered and the man who waited on me was very polite. I ordered a little cheeseburger with everything on it. I love how the "extras" don't cost extra. I havnt had much to write about lately because Nova has fallen hard for Vice's Munchies and has insisted on cooking at home with me as her guinea pig. I'm not complaining because for the most part she's nailed it and on most days she cooks wearing nothing more then her Hello Kitty apron and bunny slippers. We'd both just regained some level of consciousness after sailing on Jim Morrisons Crystal Ship (figure it out) for the past 4 and half hours. I didn't want to cook either, so we climbed into the mini van and headed to Ankeny. The throngs of Christmas shoppers were everywhere which meant by the time we got there I had a serious case of road rage. It is a known fact that I am the only person in the metro who knows how to properly drive and underatands that speed limits are mere suggestions. This is my third visit to Five Guys. Once in Kansas City, once in Key West and now Ankeny. I've honestly never been impressed but Nova loves the place. Yeah their fries are good but anyplace that I can't order a burger medium rare just don't cut it in my book. I get it, they are fast food but I also don't expect to pay $31 for a couple of cheeseburgers, a shared fries and a couple of drinks. They are overpriced. Call it "craft" burgers all you want but it ain't worth the price. Nova will disagree as it's her favorite fast food burger joint. If I must have fast food burgers I'll stick to Wendys or B-bops but in the overall scheme of things $31 dollars is a small price to pay to keep her happy. Most people love Five Guys. I am not one of them. I also understand that taste and atmosphere is subjective. I'll give them two stars and add another because she loves them. read more

We normally love Five Guys, but won't be going back to this location. We ordered two burgers. One was suppose to be a bacon cheeseburger with pickles and they left off the pickles and bacon. When we brought it up to them they laughed and gave us this tin with bacon pieces that were cold and crumbed to pieces when picked up. I asked if they had warm bacon and they laughed again and said "we don't use fresh bacon" and that's the only bacon they use. read more

The food is great. But the prices are too high. If i'm spending $15 on a burger, fries and drink, i'm going to a nicer restaurant, not a fast food joint where you pick up your own order, get your own soda, etc. Potatoes are not that expensive to charge $4 an order. There's no combo discounts. I'd go there more often if prices were cut by 20% or so. read more

In my opinion, the best "fast food" burger place in Des Moines. The "little" cheeseburger and fries are actually just normal sized. It's a little more expensive than typical fast food joints, but the quality is superb, so you get what you pay for. The inside was clean and well organized, which is sometimes hard to find with other fast food restaurants. If calories didn't count, I'd eat here everyday! read more

I'm glad there's a new location in Ankeny! It's conveniently on Delaware Ave which I think is a smart place for a restaurant. It's right by I235. I like the endless free toppings. The jalapeños are fresh cut. I didn't expect that. I am not a fan of it. If you want only 1 patty - order the little burgers. I accidentally ordered a double. The coffee shake didn't taste like it was blended well. I got a few strong hits of coffee. The line here was not as crazy as the West Des Moines location. That may have been bc the crazy thunderstorm the day I stopped in. Yay for thunderstorms! read more

I love Five Guys. I especially love Five Guys when I go out East. Those locations seem to truly embody the Five Guys experience and essence. The ones out West just don't have the same feel and quality food. So I was worried when One opened in Ankeny. Would it be like the East coast locations or the West coast ones? Would I end up only coming here once and have to ignore it because it would disappoint? Lucky for me and anyone who has not had the job of eating at an East coast Five Guys, the Ankeny location is exactly like the ones out East. The food is amazing. They do a great job with customer service. The burgers are slow to cook but what can you expect when they only cook to order? That's what makes it taste so great. So if you can't make it to New York City with the Iowa Hawkeyes for the Pinstripe Bowl, you can still pretend you are out East by eating here and then watch the game while sitting on your back porch. read more

So I, my wife and my daughter finally decided to try this place. Aaaand I was utterly disappointed. The restaurant tries to give off like this "Americana" experience and style, but the moment the I stepped foot in I realized what a sad site this place was. The cleanliness was lacking (I understand they give out free peanuts and people can discard of them but even places like Texas Roadhouse clean up when they are dead). We went up to the counter and ordered our food. The ordering process is pretty straight forward and easy. There is a lack of toppings, so you can't really order anything like Zombie Burger has. I ordered a double cheeseburger, with typical toppings. Lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup and mustard. My wife went for the same and my daughter ordered a single cheeseburger with bacon and ketchup. We of course got fries, a couple of regular sodas, and on regular chocolate milkshake. Now this is where things get disappointing! It was 45 dollars! At this time I was already regretting it because I though about how much cheaper B-Bops down the street is and how even Zombie Burger is a bit cheaper. But I of course went ahead with my experience. They have the soda machines where you can get over 100 different combinations. Which is always nice to see. I was looking for a spot to sit but it seems the staff doesn't really care about cleaning the tables. I found one that was decent enough but I still had to go get wipes and clean my own table. I'm sorry but for 45 dollars worth of food! Nobody should have to clean their own table. We sat and waited for out food. It took about 10 minutes which isn't bad. At this point I just wanted to eat....aaand again I was disappointed. The cheese on my burger was not melted and was still cold which threw off the whole burger. I also tasted nothing but ketchup! There was mayo and supposedly mustard but my burger was overpowered with how much ketchup was on my burger. My fries soggy, super salty, and just bland. The burger itself taste like something I can make at home, and to be honest the meat itself taste a lot like the ones I make at home. Instead this burger was bland, cold, and sad. The only positive was that the meat was well cooked and had a nice crisp to it. My wife and kid were also disappointed. We aren't snobs or anything and we always give every new restaurant a chance, but this place was just utterly sad. For 45 dollars I should have to clean my own table, for 45 dollars you should at least melt my cheese, and for 45 dollars I paid for a ketchup burger. You can try it! But you are better off going to B-Bops and Zombie Burger. Me and my family will not be going back. What a shame! read more

Not a good experience, avoid. You have way better options in Ankeny. We came on a Saturday with 2 kids and two adults. Our total for 2 grilled cheese, two cheese burgers, 3 fries, four regular drinks was a whopping 49.60. I couldn't believe it. I could go to a sit down restaurant and be served for that price. I figured don't judge it, until you eat it. So we had to fight for a table to sit at. People kept jumping for tables and no one cares how long your looking for a table or if you have tiny kids. I had people who'd throw a coat down on top of a table as I was standing next to it while waiting for people to get up. What I find the most irritating about this is if I'm paying $50 for food I shouldn't have to fight for a table with 20 other people. Ask yourself this. Why would you want to eat in restaurant that has a atmosphere where people are angry for tables or people staring you down to eat faster so they can sit. It's uncomfortable for all the patrons. I've heard so much bragging and I don't see it. You can go down the street to other mom and pop stores. Don't waste your time. The food doesn't look any better than Culver's and b-bops. Myself and our oldest mini-Yelper decided to come up here and grab dinner for the family about a week after they'd opened. Now, I had visited the one in West Des Moines before so I knew what to expect. For it only being open for a week, we got in and out pretty quick. The family loved the food! The one thing we didn't care for was the price. It's on the spendy side so this will have to be a once every couple of months kinda place. My first time going, and I did like the place. First few things I notice is that I have to order their fries (especially since they are even telling me where they potatoes are from today kinda cool). The free classic peanuts that you can start eating while in line or waiting for your food. So The food was good, Burger was nothing too special but still good, fries are made by hand cut and that always taste very good. I was in town over the weekend and decided to try this place. Unfortunately it was not worth the hype. The burgers were ok, but in truth, not any better then Culvers or B-Bops which both burger places are geographic competition to 5-Guys. The fries were soggy which surprised me. Not sure how deep fried fries are soggy...but they were. I was told by some friends that the place was new in town, so i decided to give them another try. Once again the burger was ok, but not impressive, with soggy fries. Tasty but soggy. To give them some sort of positive reviews...the staff was friendly and seemed to enjoy their job (and each other). Orders seemed to come up quickly. Coming here will be a novelty for people, but i would recommend going elsewhere for a burger. read more

I am glad we finally got a Five guys in Ankeny. We have always loved the burgers and especially the fries. Have been here a couple of times now. The cheeseburger has been spot on each time only they messed up my order the 1st time and didn't get any bacon on it, had just opened. Glad that they make them fresh here, so don't mind the wait. Always have to eat some peanuts while waiting. The first time the fries could have used about another minute in the fryer, they were still soggy, kind of disappointed. The flavor was spot on, but don't like eating soggy fries. My second trip here the fries were cooked longer and spot on, was also not as busy the 2nd time. I am typically anti-fast food. I make an exception for these hand cut fries, griddle cooked smash burgers and delectable shakes. If you like that red head's fries in your Frosty, you'll go bonkers over this. And if you like fries sans soft serve dairy, I recommend trying the vinegar. I didn't know that I liked fries with malt vinegar until this place introduced me to it. Now it's a staple there. I've tried elsewhere as well and it's just not the same. I can't explain it. This has to be one of the most disappointing experiences in my life, in teying out a restaurant. I heard SO MUCH hype about Five Guys, so we were so excited when this place came to our town. It was me, my husband, and our 9 year old. When we walked in, I immediately wanted to walk out. This place was a disaster. Almost every table was covered in trash, the floor, etc. And then the food. Oh my God. First off, your thin, tasteless burger, is tasteless, almost everything you want on it costs extra. The fries that they charge you seperately for are soggy, and completely flavorless. Stopped in for first time Friday night about 9pm. Cashier was not friendly and seemed to be inconvenienced. Offered no sugesstions and just stared awkwardly at us. Ended up ordering 2 cheeseburgers, 1 large cajun fry, and 2 sodas. $30. I thought that was a bit pricey. Tables not clean. Burgers were delicious and messy. Cait and I have never been here before, so after 2+ hours of grocery shopping, we decided to stop here and have lunch. If you've never been there, a little burger is one patty and a regular burger is two patties. You can order a burger, hot dog and/or fries and a beverage or milk shake. Cait said "this better be the best damn burger we've ever had for that much!" You can watch your food being made (which is nice) and there is a huge barrel of unshelled peanuts for your munching pleasure. When your number is called, you pick up your food, which comes in a brown paper bag. There really isn't a lot of seating inside. Even though it was after 2:00 pm the restaurant was pretty busy and most of the tables were being used. Our food was nice and hot when we got it. As you can see from the photos, our large fry was in a cup that was larger than our drink cups! The fries are very good, but a little too salty for me. I unwrapped my burger and cut it in half. One side was burger, mayo, onion, lettuce and cheese. The other side was all mayo, onion, lettuce and cheese. No burger. So...meat to bun ratio stinks. For an $8 burger, I am expecting the burger to be the same size as the bun. The burger tasted good but nothing I would rush right back for. Cait's burger was pretty comparable with the meat/bun ratio. We ate, cleared our table and left. We both agreed that while good, we could get the same burger at Wendy's for a lot less. The staff seemed very nice and friendly and the decor was pretty plain. There was a walkway cordoned off by huge bags of potatoes. Otherwise just tables and chairs.
