The place was not super busy when we arrived, but I do think we missed the lunch rush as the staff was cleaning and restocking. Even though it had clearly been busy it was very clean and the decor did not feel dated and was pretty standard for a place that is borderline fast food. However, it did not taste like fast food. I ordered a burger with egg, cheese, and pulled pork. It was a perfectly cooked medium rare with the fried egg over easy. It was absolutely packed with savory flavor and a slight sweetness in the pulled pork. The egg was runny, just liked i like it, and had slightly crispy edges. The bread for the burger was fluffy and a little sweet, a perfect pairing. I ordered the tater tots as my side and they were nicely seasoned and crunchy on the outside but hot and soft inside. Things have changes some, there is not the cozy feel of a family spot, none of the wait staffs that had been there for years remain, the replacement are mainly young and a bit distracted. The three main components that made the hot dog here great generally remain - great chili, soft buns, and Zack's made in house hot sauce. They got chicken tenders, crinkle cut fries, Texas toast, coleslaw, and their famous Cane's sauce. And that's about it. Your options are to basically choose the combo with the number of tenders you want (or get a lot of tenders à la carte). It's limited, but I guess they stick to what they do well. As they are so well known for their sauce, I was surprised to see it came in a generic restaurant clear plastic ramekin with just their name on it, opposed to something more extravagant with their branding. I know they will hate me for saying this, but the taste is very similar to Zax sauce from Zaxby's. I love Zax sauce, so I mean this as a compliment. Cane's is a little more peppery and tangy though. They have a soda fountain as well as various tea options for beverages. Ketchup of course but no other sauce readily available. Like I said, keeping it simple.
