I was beyond stoked for a Five Guys in Detroit. Really? A late night NON-coney establishment in the city of Detroit? Pfft. Whatever, it'll never happen. Just like the "fatburger" establishment that was supposed to open on the ground floor of Studio One apartments never happened. ZOMG. But Five Guys made it! AND IT IS GOOD! It's huge. It's CLEAN, like REALLY clean. The food is GOOD. They are open LATE. They make you tasties! Their fries are amazing! Downside of the Detroit establishment: - why does it take so freaking long to place an order? Order comes up fine, but srsly. If there's 3 people on the cashier -- let's go people! I AM HUNGRY AND YOU ARE THE ONLY THING BETWEEN ME AND MY BURGER!!! - they serve beer. You'd think this was going to be a perk -- but you are wrong. They serve (expectedly) shitty beer. But not just that -- beer that tries to get passed off as "unique" and a "microbrew" such as shock top. *cough* Anyway. They got your normal bud and bud light too. - honestly? that's it. FYI 1 regular fries = TWO scoops of fries in a bag = enough for 2 people 1 cheeseburger = TWO patties 1 minicheese = ONE patty if you have peanut allergies stay FAR FAR AWAY you get free peanuts just for waiting, they are delicious no topping is extra (except bacon) they have vegetarian versions of stuff their french fries are fried in peanut oil (and trust me, for the non-allergic out there -- this is the BEST way to fry fries) you can get a huge TUB of ketchup (also - the BEST WAY to eat fries! love it!) My favorite burger that just hits the spot: Cheeseburger with grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, pickles, ketchup, mustard This place makes me happy that it's now in Detroit... but also my doctor unhappy as my cholesterol just increased thinking that this mouth watering place is just a few minutes from me.... *drool puddle* BTW - I use the Greektown casino /hotel garage to get food here. Because it's free and street parking is such a pain in the butt around here. Just a short 2 block walk.

Great place for a late night snack. This place gets crowded after 2 am on a Saturday its a like a club after the club. The wait to make your order is not bad but the time to get your order was downright slow. The burgers are good, excellent filling size and not little micro burgers. I like the Cajun fries too. The barhroom at this time 2am is like the bathroom at the club very much in disarray, nevertheless it serves its purpose im sure thsy have everyone on staff serving the customers due to all the people. Next time I go back it will be during the day.

I was almost sick of hearing about 5 Guys OR being asked if I have ever gone there and if it was good. Thanks to a group of impatient, most unhealthy guys, we stopped in on our way out of the Greektown casino. I was a big fan of my burger(regular bacon cheese). A note to newcomers, a regular burger has 2 patties, and a "little" burger is a single. There were a plethora of toppings for my choosing as well which I like. I hate when places act like less is more....NO, on a burger, more is more. More bacon, more cheese, more meat, more tomatoes, more pickles etc. As a side note I'm a huge Checkers fan, and I got some similar Big Buford style taste with my burger. I will say this about the order of fries, it was large. They basically fill up a big cup, then pile more on top of that inside your bag. It is probably too much for one normal person to take down alone. If you were to stop in with another person I think splitting an order would be good. As far as the taste...just meh for me. I much prefer Checkers fries but 5 Guys weren't bad. In the end, I got a burger, fries, and a drink and I think my bill was around $12. Seemed a little high for semi-fast food....although a buddy did mention the prices were a little inflated compared to the location he visited previously. I'll chalk that up to the fact that this 5 Guys is downtown and attached to the casino.

Stopping in for a bite at what I thought to be a quick-serve establishment , I was pleasantly surprised with the service and quality of food at Five Guys. My cheeseburger was made-to-order in front of me, served up all the way, hot, juicy, full of flavor and a big delicious mess. My "regular" order of Cajun fries was large enough to easily satisfy two people. The only downside is how noisy it was inside with the workers yelling back and forth to each other, but I suppose that's what you get during the lunch hour. I am most certainly going to make Five Guys my go-to-burger joint whenever I'm in the city.

This review encompasses 2 visits within a 1 month period, 1st visit was on Dec 22, 2010.... 1st visit I got the Hamburger with onions and mushrooms along with an order of Cajun Fries and a large coke. All was fresh, nicely spiced and quick. We got there around 11:20am and was out by 11:50am... The 2nd visit was today and I got exactly the same thing minus the Coke. We got there at 11:05am and left at 11:50am. The fries we over spiced (I like alot of spice, but this was ridiculous ). Needless to say, the fries tasted like Cajun seasoning only. The Burger was ok at best. This time we waited about 15minutes to get our order. So I had to drop it from a 4 star first visit to a 3 star combined....

American uses boring "sweet onions" while Lafayette uses "SPANISH onions " which have more kick. But the real difference is the Chili, and that's the reason for the split & disagreement. Lafayette has a MEATER chili, meaning they don't skimp on quality ingredients. My best friend and I used to skip school in the 80's just to eat here. And the bathroom is COOL! It's like an adventure! The other main difference is American Coney has open seating because REAL Detroiters don't eat there. When interviewed there's a real character difference between owners. Grace Keros, the 3rd gen owner of American Coney likes to talk sh1t. You don't need to do that when your product is superior. Every interview she gives is sour grapes. Plus REAL Detroiters Coney dogs never put CHEESE on the coneys. American Coney = FAKE Detroit Coneys. Here is a pic of me in my $4Million Batmobile. Batman prefers Lafayette!

The Coney dog ($4) was ordered. It had the classic toppings of bean less chili, yellow mustard, and raw chopped white onions. This was solid. There was a nice bite on the chili with plenty of mustard and onions. The bread was soft and the hot dog was cooked appropriately. The chili was the key as it was hearty and meaty. Will I go back? Yeah, sure.

It is straight-up childhood nostalgia in a container. Think back to growing up without much cash, where dinner was store-bought spaghetti using the cheapest canned sauce on the shelf, paired with standard Texas toast transformed into makeshift garlic bread. That is the exact flavor profile they are hitting, and truth be told, they nail that specific vibe perfectly. The process starts out in the alley where you order. The staff handling the food window were nice and remarkably quick, handing over the bag without any fuss. Things got a little confusing when trying to head inside to eat. The layout blends into a separate restaurant next door, and it is tough to tell where the boundary line is. I tried to wander over to that bar side just to grab a beer, but holding the spaghetti bag apparently marks you as an outsider. The staff over there chased me off pretty quick and directed me back to the designated area for the pasta crowd. Once you get into the correct zone, the space actually has some cool character. The highlight is the "trailer" that acts as the merch store. The concept is neat, but the actual retail experience fell a bit flat. They were completely cleared out of most shirt sizes, the pricing felt way too steep for what it was, and the guy working the counter was kind of a dick. Still, the spot is absolutely worth checking out at least once for the sheer novelty, just make sure you know exactly what you are getting into before you walk up to the window.
