Ah, yes, the debate continues. I'm sure most of you know the basics, but I gotta say, I like Five Guys for the variety in toppings BUT I wouldn't necessarily prefer it over In-N-Out. They are catering to two different crowds! You go to In-N-Out for exactly a cheeseburger or double double, fries, and a drink, for a super decent price and that's it. You go to Five Guys if you wanna get a little fancy with your burger and fries. Honestly, both burgers go down very clean, no bloated or greasy feeling after you're done. okay lets be real, kinda hard to thrive in a super west coast town like HB especially right down the street from In-n-out BUT i must say that the closer you get to the water on the west coast, the harder it is to find a real special food place of any kind. and who can denounce that its always a good thing to have options?? so with that said i really like this place when i have a taste for it. cooking everything in peanut oil is a niiiiice change up from the norm and YES it does take a while to get your order but at least you know its cooked after you order it and not microwaved. Been to this place twice. Both times it seemed a little weird. Never as many people there as there should be. The doors seemed almost jammed shut and we had to yank hard to get them open! They have loose peanuts, but never sure what to do with them, since they give you a ton of fries. The floors are too clean to just throw the peanut shells on the floor -- what gives? The burgers are very good, and the fries are exceptional -- chunky and with the skin on. The price is a little higher than it should be. read more

Delicious backyard barbecue hamburgers, in my opinion. They have a lot more options than a regular hamburger joint and the patties are so much thicker compared to any national chain. Get there when they open at 11 am, or after the lunch rush. Otherwise, your wait will be a very long one. Especially when the smell of deliciousness is attacking you! I was excited to hear about 5 guys coming to the Orange County Area and had high hopes for it but its just alright, would rather go to In N Out down the street. Pros -Fresh meat(better than most places) -FREE toppings and you can customize your burger -FREE peanuts -Great customer service Cons -The bun is weak, ordered a regular hamburger and it broke, happened for other visits too -Pricey! The burgers(hamburger 5.00+) and fries(2.99 regular) are good but it cost more than In N Out(which i prefer)! A burger and fries separately an In N Out is about half the cost of five guys -Burger is an ok burger, nothing super special -Fries same as above After eating at 5 guys multiple times I would say that In N Out still rules west coast simply for better food and price. Had to try the place as I heard all the hype and comparisons to In N Out. - Burger fell apart halfway through eating it. - Pattie was good, but the overall tase was like a regular burger. It is missing the special sauce. - Did not see any machine making fresh cut fries - Prices are high for what you get (and compared to the competition) I would say that a better comparison to this place would be Carl's Jr as their burgers are more like the 6 dollar burger. read more

All the excitement surrounding this place is just hype. It's not that great, but it isn't horrible either. It's a bit expensive and what I don't like about this place is that their fries are soggy and their bun falls apart upon first bite! The staff members are nice and polite but unfortunately, it doesn't hide the fact that their food is just okay. Nothing special at all. Braved the crowds because I wanted to check it out. Totally disappointing. Let's start with the good - the fries. They are perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and moist and "meaty" on the inside. A large order? Almost $5, for fries. The burgers were really disappointing. There was no beef flavor and really no substance to these burgers. Maybe that's why they offer free toppings. Won't be going back, especially in light of the fact that we still have In N Out and TK Burgers for cheap, fast, and tasty choices. read more

The bun is what makes this place SO good. It is spongy and fresh and just adds to the greatness of this high quality burger. It is nice being able to pick out your own topping how they have it so you don't have to worry about ordering then end up with something you did not like on it. I had the Cajun fries and got the large to share and that was plenty because they fill up the cup then put more in the bag for you. The fries were delicious and another awesome thing is the kitchen is fully open so you can watch every move. The one bad thing I have to say about this place is that the price is a little steep for what kind of place I thought it was but you have to pay for quality like that. read more

The pros: This place is condiment mecca. I like being able to add a bunch of condiments to my burgers and dogs without being charged and/or feeling like an obnoxious fatass who wants something really particular. The cons: Although this only happened once, there was a time in which I ordered a hot dog and drove my order to a baseball game. Sat down, unpacked my stuff... and found out the bun was empty! I was really bummed when I saw another Five Guys open up on Harbor. Why? I just don't understand the hype. My mother-in-law gave me this fab article about this place and each time my hubby and I drove by in HB the place was crowded ... so we didn't go right away. Their idea of fresh, mouth watering burger is based on the standards of East Coast where In N Out hasn't made it out there ... and not that I am a huge fan of In N Out. Lately, I have been having severe allergies to certain preservatives and salt alternatives ... so I haven't been visiting In N Out lately but if you really want to make a comparison to In N Out and fresh tasting consistent burgers? Make the drive to Lake Forest. Off of El Toro in the Arbor Shopping Center is a place called the Habit. Get a Charburger with Cheese ... it won't be disappointing. Yum! Can get loud at times and smaller tables so it's not good for a group of fiends, but if there are 3-4 of you and you want to sit outside to enjoy the summer air it can be nice. read more

The burgers may not be as good as In n Out, and yes it is more expensive, but they are good in their own right. The amount of fries is huge...definitely share! Having the burger made to order with a variety of ingredients is a definite plus. We have yet to try the hot dogs, maybe that should be next. They have added shakes...but a little on the pricey side. This place is really nice and clean. It has a totally different image versus other hamburger places. Love their hamburgers and fries with all the toppings especially grilled mushroom.
