I remember going to this Portillo's when they opened, maybe 2006, I think my dad wanted to come here. I don't even recall what I thought back then, but I knew I had been there. During COVID we ordered Portillo's on delivery, it was not great. I remember my Italian Beef tasting like old beef. I remember throwing it away. But, it was COVID times, we couldn't expect greatness from anything back then. 2026! The time has arrived, my husband wanted to dine in. He said "forget your COVID memories, it's gonna be great! It's gonna be way better fresh than on delivery!" It wasn't. I had the Italian Beef, added the peppers (so stupid you have to pay more for them), he got the "Jumbo" Hot Dog, which is literally the size of any normal hot dog you would get anywhere. I had the meal which came with fries and a drink, we also ordered onion rings and a Chocolate Cake Shake. Didn't take long for our food to come out. They have a huge sign that says "CONDIMENTS HERE" so we went to see what they had - ketchup. Yes, just ketchup. His hot dog was a hot dog, I didn't think it was anything special, but he liked it. The beef still tasted old to me, I guess that's just the taste of it, and i'm just not a fan. If it weren't for the flavor of the peppers, I would have hated this again. The fries and onion rings were pretty good. The shake was fine but didn't blow my mind. We got a small and ended up throwing half of it away. One of my friends recommended this place to me, so I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did because I was not disappointed. The restaurant has an old-school diner vibe, which I really appreciated. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger meal, which came with fries and a self-serve drink. The food was good, and the customer service was solid. The only thing that threw me off was the layout. When you walk in, the first station you see is actually where you pick up your food, not where you order. You have to walk all the way to the back of the restaurant to place your order, then walk back to the front and wait for your number to be called. It was a little odd and confusing at first, but the wait was pretty short, probably no more than five minutes. They also forgot to put napkins in my bag, which sucked, but I'm assuming there were some available somewhere in the restaurant. I didn't bother looking around, so I'll take that one on myself. I also went through the drive-thru, and that was an experience in itself. There's no traditional speaker box where you place your order. I completely overshot it because nobody was there when I drove by, and then someone suddenly popped out behind me. I stopped, backed up, placed my order for chili cheese fries and a slice of chocolate cake, and the girl put a little sticky note number on my car and told me to drive to the second window. I did, got my food, and was on my way. Overall, it's a good spot with good food and a unique old-school feel. If it's your first time going, hopefully this review saves you from looking like a confused rookie like I did. Once you know how everything works, it's pretty simple. The cheese sauce kicked up an already pleasing sandwich, and I relished each bite. Service was great. The young woman behind the register was friendly & hospitable. Plenty of seating inside, and especially outside in their patio facing La Palma Ave. Parking is at Buena Park Downtown mall, which is a barren apocalyptic nightmare. It's across the street from Knott's Berry Farm. You'd think the mall would attract visitors? Portillo's provided a great perk for their Rewards members in honor of National Sandwich Day. Spreading the amount of time to redeem the offer from one day to six days, allowed more people the ability to take advantage of the free regular sandwich. I have been to Chicago and never went to Portillo's thinking it was a touristy place. Since my wife has been traveling to Chicago for work she has raved about this place and their beef dip sandwich . So I had to go to the only spot in So Cal to check it out. OMG why have I never tried Portillo's!!! The Italian Beef Sandwich with mozzarella and their sweet and hot peppers. We came here for a wedding anniversary can you believe that? (among other things lol but still) My wife is in her third trimester, and she's been craving hot dogs & corn dogs pretty often. So of course we had to get a Chicago dog from Portillo's! Didn't disappoint. Onion rings are always fire. Fries are standard. I used to get the chili dog as a kid but I think I've grown out of it. I love this place. It's great. I was driving back from some work stuff and for some reason, there was a freeway closure so I had to take the 91 instead. As I approached the five, I thought about it for a moment and realized I could get a Chicago hot dog. When would be the next time I would be here? I didn't know or have any idea. I love just how the flavor of all the ingredients, from the tomato to the pickle to the chilis, chopped onions, green relish and the amazingly tasty hot dog and bun all come together. Ived been coming here for years and let me say this place is one of the best hamburgers you will have locally. Which I kept forgetting to take a picture of the delicious hamburger and went straight for the eating. lol It's always cooked to perfection with an amazing taste like a real hamburger should taste. The inside of the location feels like from another time like 1950's. Which that's an awesome time and love it. There's an outside patio where you can sit down and watch the view of the stores across. Service is excellent and the order wait is not long at all from the inside. Now in the drive thru is faster and no much wait in line. I've been wanting to visit Portillo's for a while, but we're always busy when we're in Anaheim. Finally, I got the chance to check it out! As a chain from Illinois, this is one of only two California locations, and it's in Buena Park. The place was packed early, even shortly after opening. You can order at a kiosk or in line. Be sure to keep your receipt; they call out your number when it's ready. The Italian Beef with hot Giardiniera and sweet peppers is pretty good. I recommend getting the dip on the side; it gets soggy quickly, especially if you take it to go. I ordered food for the whole family, but they didn't care for it, so that means more for me! Haha. I even ate the leftovers the next day, and heating them up on the stovetop was just as good, if not better. I heated the broth on the side and drizzled it over the sandwich, and also used it for dipping. I tried the Chicago Dog after having the Italian beef, and I thought it was the best. It was the perfect bite - the spice of the peppers, sweetness of the onions and relish, and the great snap of the dog really hit the spot. I even ate it when the bun was soggy, and I still loved it! This fast food is as good as it gets! As with any fast-food place, mistakes can happen with orders. I checked my order upon receiving it and everything seemed correct, but I mistakenly didn't check for the sauces. I saw ketchup in containers, so I went to the counter to ask for packets. However, I forgot to check for the two sauces I ordered with my son's chicken tenders, and they were missing. We didn't realize it until we left, unfortunately. The onion rings were pretty good, and I would order them again, but the crinkle-cut fries were a bit soggy, so I wouldn't order them again. They offer Coke products with free refills if you dine in. I love Portillo's logo, with the weiner dog in a bun with white and red stripes - it's a very iconic design. I definitely will come back to Portillo's; it's my go-to spot for a Chicago Dog. I could hardly wait for the Italian beef so I ate most of it walking to the car. The bread was soft and soaked up a lot of the juice from the meat. There was a large amount of beef. Flavorful and just delicious. The hotdog I ate the next morning so I can't give an honest review of how it is when it's fresh but when I heated it up, it had a great snap and was delicious. I was visiting the family home in Buena Park and decided to get some Chicago dogs from Portillo's. I've been a fan of Portillo's since they opened up this location, even coming to the grand opening of this one. I know Portillo's started in Chicago, and I've been told that the Chicago dogs are authentic. I'm not sure if they are or aren't, but I know that they're tasty! This location is in a standalone building in the parking lot of Buena Park Downtown. Don't let the Downtown part of the name fool you; it's not the actual downtown section of Buena Park. Anyhow, parking for Portillo's is easy to find. This Portillo's have a drive thru. which can save you time with their quickness. I like ordering at the counter with a live person. I've never had bad customer service. My go to order has been two Chicago Dogs, onion rings and a drink. I look forward to getting my order number, which is what the employee at the pick up area will call out in addition to something else that they'll say, such as, "Order number 108, your meal will be great!" or something similarly silly like that. The hot dogs are made of beef and have the casing on them, so you'll get that snap when biting into them. When ordering them, I always get everything on them, which includes sliced tomatoes, chopped onions, celery salt, peppers, yellow mustard and their bright green relish - everything piled in/on a poppy seed hot dog bun. The onion rings are deep fried, not too greasy, and are nice and crispy. Fountain drinks are self-serve. There are many more items on the menu, including burgers, sausages, salads and desserts. When we go to Knott's Berry Farm, we almost always eat at Portillo's for dinner....except when we're craving Mrs. Knott's fried chicken and decided to put up with the long lines. Going to Portillos has been a family tradition of ours for over 10 years now. Portillos is RIGHT by Knott's, quick, very reasonable, very tasty and equally as consistent as In 'n Out. They have it DOWN! Seriously, over the years, the delicious Italian Beef sandwiches and Chicago Dogs have always been on point. The best way to get the Italian Beef is with sweet and hot peppers (including the awesome giardiniera: Italian pickled vegetables), "extra dipped" in gravy (but only if you are dining in). We have taken plenty of Portillos' excellent food home but you'll want to get a side of gravy to dip in otherwise you'll have a soggy mess. Not that that is a bad thing; it still tastes great but that's my personal preference. The wife likes it extra dipped and gravy on the side. I am always torn between the Italian Beef sandwich or the Chicago Dogs and usually have half and half and take home the rest. Last night, I was having some pretty bad heartburn (thanks, Wegovy!) so I went with the perfect Chicago Dog (as if that would go down easier...lol)...and ended up ordering an Italian Beef ("sweet & hot") to take home. The girl had said recently that she didnt like Portillos (for shame!) but she ordered the Char-Broiled Chicken Sandwich and she said it was the best chicken sandwich she'd ever had. She even ordered one to go to have for lunch today. We usually order a large fry and an order of onion rings to share and the crinkle cut fries are oh so perfect! The rings are great too, super crunchy due to the breading, not too much breading, though. And if you drop them a survey (QR codes on the receipt), you can get a free large fry...which we always get when we place the 2nd order to-go. Beers on tap have varied over the years. Beer is served super cold in a chilled schooner and is a good deal for $6-$7 depending on domestic or imported. They had three last night, including Blue Moon. My wife loved the Coors Light (water) on tap and I had a Modelo Especial. I have preferred when they have an IPA on tap. I forgot to add that they've changed up the ordering system and have included several tablet kiosks where you can order like you're at McDonald's. It is very efficient and has helped with some of the lines (which were never bad) we have experienced in the past. Every time we are in the area, it is our tradition to stop by this amazing Portillos. The staff are always so nice and helpful and the food is so flavorful! Our go-to orders are the beef sandwich with sweet and hot peppers, their spicy chicken sando, Maxwell dog, and fries with cheese sauce. We also order hot oil to give our meals a bit of a kick. This trip I decided to purchase a chocolate shake air freshener and a drink cup keychain. Upon paying, the worker noticed the lights on the display turned the cup a bit yellow and offered a replacement. Upon looking she couldn't find one, but she gave me a free sticker and some hats. Sadly the keychain cup fell the first day I had it and got lost, but I'll be back to get another keychain soon. The Italian beef is very good, the meat is flavorful and very thinly sliced. The sandwiches are WET. There's an option to customize the amount of wetness, so I got mine on the side to dip. You can get it extra dipped though. This was a very messy meal so definitely need to eat on the large trays they give you. It was an extra couple of bucks to add the peppers, a bit expensive, but worth it to get the real Italian beef experience. We also shared a small fry and large chocolate cake shake. The restaurant is located about 5-10 minutes from the park and near the mall, so thankfully plenty of parking because this place was BUSY on a Sunday afternoon. When I went out to Anaheim California for the Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon, my husband and I ended up eating dinner at Portillo's after stopping by Knotts Berry Farm on a Thursday. This restaurant is relatively close to Buena Park Downtown and only a few miles away from Knott's Berry Farm and Disneyland. The décor inside is so cool. It has a variety of vintage signs, themed memorabilia, and Chicago history! It's an experience when you go and eat inside Portillo's! There are a few different ordering options at Portillo's. You can use the kiosks , dine in, drive thru or even delivery options. It's great that this restaurant offers flexibility for ordering options! My husband and I ended up eating inside the restaurant, using the Kiosk to order. The menu has a lot of different options. This restaurant is known for the Italian Beef Sandwiches, the Chicago style hot dogs, and the char broiled burgers. If you're looking some sweets, the restaurant does have a delicious chocolate cake shake that blends a slice of chocolate cake! It's a must try. Luckily though, our order was ready in 15 minutes. My husband enjoyed the Italian Sausage Sandwich. Unfortunately, my bacon cheeseburger was missing the bacon. It did have cheese, ketchup and pickles though! The burger was still delicious. The Onion rings here are the best onion rings! The battered coat is extra crispy, and when you take a bite, the whole onion ring doesn't come with it! They're so good! My husband and I ate all of those first! The French Fries were just okay. We enjoyed this Portillo's location. The team members here are helpful and friendly. We don't have a Portillo's in Vegas, so it was great to be able to try the location near Disneyland! read more

I was surprised to find a Portillo's in Orange County. The fries were super crispy and delicious. I couldn't decide what to order, so I went with the chicken tenders. They were lightly seasoned and delicious. I dipped them in buffalo sauce. I also tried the spice cake shake. The consistency was perfect, but I was expecting a little more spice in the flavor. Portillo's is a great place to get your fancy hot dog fix! Along with your basic hot dogs and chili dogs, they also offer a great Italian sausage dog and an Italian beef and sausage dog combo. Today I meant to order the Italian beef & sausage dog but accidentally ordered just the Italian sausage dog. While it looks rather plain, it's packed with flavor and the bun is soft and fluffy and delicious. I dipped it and my fries in a side of cheese sauce and it satisfied my fancy hot dog craving! While the food was good, the service could stand improving. The gal taking our order was not friendly and acted like she was not happy that we were placing our order with her instead of at the kiosk. In the outside dining area, I asked the woman working out there if she could wipe down our table (the previous diners had spilled some of their food on the table), she also gave the impression that we were imposing on her. Also, since the restaurant is located on the outskirts of the Buena Park mall, parking can be challenging during weekends and holidays. read more

I had never heard of Portillo's before this night, but it was a cute little late night find. Arrived on a Saturday night around 11pm and there were quite a few people who had the same late night munchies as us! Walked up to the ordering screen and got the two hot dog meal to share! One thing I will say about this place is the ambiance is so fun. Definitely Chicago carnival vibes. Lots of colorful signage everywhere. I don't have kids but I can see some kiddos loving all the fun decor to look at. The hot dogs were ok. Next time I'll get chili dogs, I opted to keep it simple with just cheese mustard and ketchup. Also, it may be an issue with most hot dog places but the dogs were lukewarm. Another pro tip, don't get cheese on the dog. Instead get the melted cheese dip. It was far more superior in my eyes. The highlight were the delicious shakes! I got a vanilla malt which was great! My date got a cake shake which was super good. All in all a nice visit to Portillos! The fries, cheese and shakes were great. I'll definitely be back to give myself another try of something else. read more
