We live about an hour away, but when we want fish, we head to Calico. The brunch is also excellent, and have had a number of times We wanted to start with the Hamachi Collar, but they were out (they seem to always be out of it on Sundays, but I understand). Too bad it a great dish. So we were torn between the crab fritters or calamari. Both are excellent. We started with the crab fritters (forgot the picture). They are very good and the apple slaw is refreshing For our mains, my wife had the lobster burrito. Good size, good price, great taste. She took half home I had the lobster omelette. I subbed out the potato (medical reasons limit carbs) for a side salad (2 dollar up charge). Omelette is full of lobster and very filling. Only complaints don't take away from the great food and friendly service. I wish they would still have the collar on Sundays, but it is a limited product and it is the end of the week. I treated myself to Sunday brunch at Calico Fish House, and after being away for a while, I'm so happy to be back! I've said it before, and I'll say it again: they have the best smoked salmon and bagel in HB! The salmon is tender, rich, and absolutely delicious, served with capers and dill. The bagel was toasted perfectly and came with their homemade cream cheese--so good! I also treated myself to their breakfast tacos, and they were outstanding. Scrambled eggs, bacon, and a little sauce all wrapped up into one delicious, messy bite. It was definitely messy, but totally worth it! I had a "crab cocktail" which came to me in the same shape as the can it came in, over some melting ice. Tasted like dried up cat food. Had to wait until the bartender in the Charlie Kirk hat noticed I was looking his way to get more lemons so I could choke it down. Barstools are so hard that if you don't have a four inch fat layer, your legs will be falling asleep before your first drink is delivered. I made a reservation for 7pm stating in the reservation it was for my birthday... nothing was said the entire meal. Why ask if there is a special celebration if it isnt recognized at all? The inside has no AC... or it wasn't working if they did. I would have sat outside had I known... We were sat immediately and drink orders taken but then it took a while for them to arrive. Then my husband and son ordered half a dozen oysters and our server disappeared for a good 30 minutes. Oysters came and were eaten and he still had not come back to get our dinner order. We got 2 lobster boils, one shell cracked, one non cracked, halibut, scallops with asparagus, jr bacon cheeseburger and grilled cheese. My lobster lacked flavor..usually it is served with butter that is salted and lemon. The butter almost was magarine.. not actual butter..and no lemon. The bread wasnt buttered either. For $56, I expect more. The jr bacon cheeseburger also lacked flavor. I am not sure they seasoned the meat... the grilled cheese was good but the side of tomato dipping sauce was cold.. The halibut was absolutely delicious as were the scallops. I was eating my son's leftover asparagus when the server came and took the plate away... apparently I wasn't supposed to finish his food. I got the blackberry lemonade cocktail and the alcohol content was weak. I'm Asian and lack the enzyme that processes alcohol (look up Asian glow or Asian red face when drinking alcohol)... and normally cannot finish a cocktail because of that.... and this is was able to down with no issues. Overall, with the reviews I expected much more. Came for an early dinner and had no problem getting seated! We sat in the patio and it was a beautiful night. We got the scallops with asparagus, grilled fish tacos, cookies with ice cream for dessert. 5/5 Scallops were beautifully made with the most flavorful citrus lime sauce 3/5 fish tacos- fish was dry but the sauce was really yummy. Wouldn't get it again. 3/5 cookies were too sweet for me...couldn't even finish one. (I rarely meet a chocolate chip cookie I don't inhale) Would definitely come back and try some more things. Holy moly this place is so yummy! Great replacement for the tired restaurant that was here before. Calico uses no seed oils- and many of the items are naturally gluten-free or can be easily prepared that way. I haven't been able to have poke and I can't tell you how long... So when I saw it was gluten free, I had to order it! The portion sizes are great. I could barely finish my whole meal... But I left stuffed! My girlfriend ordered fish tacos. Raw oysters looked the most appealing, we ordered 10. All were smaller than the size of a half dollar, no oyster forks available and minimal hot sauce options. The regular menu had a large selection, prices are higher than other local spots. This was experience was average overall including service. Since we were by to ocean, it would only make sense to get a seafood meal in! Decided to give it a try since it has pretty good rating on yelp. Got sat down within 30-40mins after we checked in. We started of with half split dozen oyster between Pacific and Washington, I wish our food runner was able to introduce or point out which is which since they look pretty similar. Regardless, they all tasted firm and fresh. Cioppino has a nice blend of seafood cooked just perfectly in the well-seasoned broth. I was able to reserve a reservation about three weeks ago from Mother's Day brunch. They have a reasonably priced menu for Sundays after church, perfect place on a nice warm day by the beach. We stopped in for brunch and were really impressed! The smoked salmon from the brunch menu was amazing, and they definitely don't skimp on the portion size. The mango shrimp salad was fresh and delicious. My only suggestion would be to serve the shrimp chilled instead of warm, but it was still very flavorful. We'll definitely be back! I had gone to this restaurant many many years ago so was surprised when I walked in, expecting to order at the counter but was led to a table. It's a sit down restaurant now. We waited in the car as they open at 11 am & can see everyone working busily to set everything up. When I asked for the lettuce on the side (amid cyclospora breakout news), he asked if i wanted tomatoes & the slaw on the side as well. I didn't know the slaw would be on the sandwich & gladly asked for everything on the side. This small & dismissable question saved my sandwich as I hate onions & the slaw had onions mixed in with a strong onion taste to go along with it. I happily handed the slaw over to my husband who loves onions & needs more veges in his diet. The fish sandwich had tasty buns with light batter to the fish which made the sandwich taste good. My wife and I frequent Calico every 3 months or so. It's a casual and clean fish house restaurant that's great for celebrating special intimate occasions with close friends and family. Last night we took my cousin and her husband out for her birthday. Litzy, the Hostess has been there for over a year and is always a kind and welcoming part of the experience. The Server, Birdie gave us the attention we expected and even enjoyed quick conversation. She was very polite and knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations. The fish is fresh and delicious. My favorite dishes are the Mahi Mahi or the California Halibut, mushroom side, and for dessert- churros with ice cream. The portion is super generous and it's perfectly fried. Light, crispy, and delicious. Sweet & Spicy Mango Poke Bowl - My order. The portion is huge! I mostly ate the raw tuna and a few bites of the salad because there's just no way I could finish it all. Fresh, flavorful, and well-balanced, I highly recommend if you love poke. A few dishes really stood out and I'd definitely come back to try more of the menu. The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars was the service.
