Calico uses no seed oils- and many of the items are naturally gluten-free or can be easily prepared that way. I haven't been able to have poke and I can't tell you how long... So when I saw it was gluten free, I had to order it! The portion sizes are great. I could barely finish my whole meal... But I left stuffed! My girlfriend ordered fish tacos. We stopped in for brunch and were really impressed! The smoked salmon from the brunch menu was amazing, and they definitely don't skimp on the portion size. The mango shrimp salad was fresh and delicious. My only suggestion would be to serve the shrimp chilled instead of warm, but it was still very flavorful. We'll definitely be back! ... I was so excited to come back again so soon, but MAYBE I should have gone with the Fish & Chips again, but I just wanted to eat a bit healthier (not fried).... So if you'll notice, the crab cakes on Yelp look fantastic, BUT THEY NO LONGER SERVE THEM (changed to (tiny) deep fried crab fritters, SMH), so I got the chilled jumbo shrimp which were fantastic, but pricey at $5 per shrimp. Also decided to try the rolls with lobster butter to share, which were a total disappointment, right down to the rolls. They were "toasted", which sound fine, but ended up to be really crusty and dry inside. They didn't appear home made either, and had everything bagel seasoning sprinkled on top. I'm a total bread lover, but these rolls just didn't cut it. The lobster "butter" that came with them WAS 99.9% butter. After getting past the tiny speck of lobster garnish, there was absolutely no additional lobster mixed in the butter. So, for bread and butter, which is normally comp at nice restaurants.... this alone was $12 for 3 rolls and "butter".... (some of the photos looked way better than ours, unfortunately) My friend was totally craving the lobster roll, so she (almost) didn't care how much it was... so $38 later, she had a semi-so-so lobster roll. My other friend got the two handed fish burger after I told her the F&C were incredible. Lots of bread here. She said the fish was a little greasy and just ok, so she picked on her fish & the fries. I was able to reserve a reservation about three weeks ago from Mother's Day brunch. They have a reasonably priced menu for Sundays after church, perfect place on a nice warm day by the beach. I ordered the cioppino, my son ordered their brown butter, chicken, and the other one with the photo not pictured ordered steak Frites. The calamari was also excellent. The bread was great and decent hamachi crudo. However they reaaallly use the "everything but the bagel" seasoning honestly a little too much. My bf had the lobster cheeseburger- fries were good and generous amounts of lobster I had the ahi tuna steak with spinach and garlic rice. It was okay, not much flavor with all the toppings unfortunately. Also I believe it gave me food poisoning... Overall food is pretty basic, relies a bit too much on the everything seasoning. My wife and I frequent Calico every 3 months or so. It's a casual and clean fish house restaurant that's great for celebrating special intimate occasions with close friends and family. Last night we took my cousin and her husband out for her birthday. Litzy, the Hostess has been there for over a year and is always a kind and welcoming part of the experience. The Server, Birdie gave us the attention we expected and even enjoyed quick conversation. She was very polite and knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations. The fish is fresh and delicious. My favorite dishes are the Mahi Mahi or the California Halibut, mushroom side, and for dessert- churros with ice cream. We started with a some very fresh and tasty oysters and the homemade bread with lobster butter, which was excellent and filling. After reading some mixed reviews about the fish tacos, my sister and I decided to try them for ourselves--and we're so glad we did! The fried fish taco was spectacular: light, crispy, flavorful, and it was a bonus that they don't use seed oils. We also ordered the lobster rolls, which were packed with generous portions of delicious lobster. The fries were perfectly cooked and a great addition to the meal. The oysters were absolutely fantastic--fresh and incredibly tasty. Our server, Erica, was excellent! She was attentive, friendly, and on top of everything. If you get the chance, I highly recommend asking for her. We sat outside on the patio on a beautiful, sunny Huntington Beach day, and the atmosphere was perfect. The patio has clear enclosure to block the wind - this will make it too hot in the summer unless they add additional shade somehow. The menu has unique items. I had the lobster cheese burger. It was really good. 1/2lb burger with lobster claw on top. Just kind of mind blowing idea... very messy... you'll need to wash up after this one. The lady had the halibut and it was nicely done. We would definitely return to Calico Fish House when In Huntington Beach. We did make reservations at 6pm on a Saturday to ensure a booth for a special birthday. We arrived early and started with mocktails at the bar- communication issue led to a non mocktail which was disappointing. The hostess was attentive and kept an eye on us to seat us early. Also would be appreciated if some good mocktails were listed. There is a Heineken 0 option for beer. However the server Garrett rectified things and was super polite and got everything right! The apps came out quickly as well as entrees at the appropriate time. We had the Cioppino and blackened Halibut with potatoes and both were delicious. The lobster dip with the tallow chips was not spicy at all , but the house made chips were awesome. We love that there are no seed oils used at CFH either! It's a semi- casual spot so don't expect an intimate feel or upscale, but it still has an elevated feel. Also there's a free dedicated parking lot which is always great in SoCal. This is a GENEROUS three stars. When this was Fish Camp, it was SO much better. Yes, they have updated the place and now offer many more choices.....that said, there were problems. I ordered the mahi w/ spinach as a side. When I received my plate, the whole thing was covered with some kind of soupy broth and some salty spice covering the whole plate. It looked very unappetizing; the sautéed spinach was also completely covered with this disagreeable spice. I tried the spinach and it was inedible (to me). I asked for a replacement--told the server pls just plain spinach. Unfortunately the replacement spinach was delivered at the end of our meal. I scraped all the excess spice and sauce from the mahi, which was actually okay on its own. My husband asked for teriyaki sauce for the chicken bowl he ordered, and apparently this restaurant does not have teriyaki sauce (?) That's weird for a restaurant to not have that.
