Tasty burgers which I always order "with everything": mayo, lettuce, BBQ sauce, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, and mustard. But the burgers are pretty small unless you double it up. That's when things start getting a bit more expensive compared to In-N-Out and The Habit (my favorite!). The fries are delicious and are cooked in pure, no cholesterol, tasty peanut oil. I somehow managed to eat EVERYTHING with one hand while driving back to the South Bay. Not sure how I didn't end up with a whole burger on my lap. Mad skillz, lol. The only issue is that the peanut oil is so greasy it leaks right through everything -- the cup it comes in, the paper bag, and even through your gloves! Also since you have to stand in the Five Guys to wait for your order, your clothes start smelling incredibly like burgers and peanut oil. It dominates everything! And just when you thought you had enough of peanuts, you notice three FULL BARRELS of peanuts sitting right next to you. Now this Five Guys establishment is special. Some ladies were having SO MUCH FUN that one of them toppled her entire tall chair over. She and the chair landed on the floor with a huge clatter, while her friend busted up laughing for about a minute. Luckily I think she was drunk and thus didn't get hurt, but perhaps she'll have a few party bruises to show off. I had this idea right before COVID and never got to execute. Today was my day to shine: I ordered my usual hamburger from Five Guys, ran over to Chipotle to pick up some guac, then came back to get the Five Guys burger. Back in April, there was a posted sign on the window saying there will be a Five Guy Burger restaurant opening in the summer of 2012. Since 2012, I go to Redwood City at least two days a week. And every time I walked by during the construction, minimum progress has shown. Finally the newest Five Guys burger has opened in September and within weeks of concluding the summer season. With the AMC movie complex next door, the restaurant would have made more money in the summer. Well, better late than never. The newest location is much smaller and peaceful than the Burlingame location, the restaurant and city I cared less. On my debut of the new RWC location, I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger with "the works" in the burger. The $7.00 burger had two beef patties, melted cheese, lettuce, slice of tomato, sliced pickles, grilled mushroom, grilled onions, a strip of crispy bacon in a bun. That is a lot of crap in one hefty burger. But I like the burger much better this time than my first and only visit in Burlingame. There are no combo meals and every item is sold separately. Thus I also ordered a large order of fries and a medium soda with free refills. Yes, they have the unique Coke machine with a choice of 100 different kinds of Coke products. These guys, all five of them, don't quit they just don't, don't know how to quit. They get it right 100% of the time--and that's sayin something. We went here last week because oddly enough, I got a craving for their peanuts, which though they're billed as free, everything costs, and I'm sure they factor those nuts into the price of the burgers and fries and stuff. That's fair. Because those peanuts, roasted in the shell, are like an amuse bouche: salty and completely addicitive. We got something a bit different than our usual, e.g. instead of two burgers and fries, we tried their cheese hot dog, with another cheeseburger (single patty because more than than is gross :-(. plus their regular fries. Wow, seriously impressed with their dog. Very nicely charred on the edges and melted cheese in perfect proportion to the meat and bun ratio. Also relish and mustard, as we also got on our burger. Everything, including the service, the temperature of the food comes out piping hot, and the interior immaculate. It's adorably retro, as in their little red checkered uniforms. I notice how each of their locations has super loud music, more than most fast food joints, though whenever we've asked them to turn it down, they've always done it, especially because we tend to go at off peak times. We went to this chain after a visit to the Fox Theater around 10:30 PM. My problem with 5 guys is that their burgers are good -- the experience just never adds up. The last time I went to a 5 guys, I felt the counter lady was really rude and treated me like how the Soup Nazi would treat his patrons... This time, I asked her if toppings came with the burger. Do not come here, it's the worst Five Guys ever. No one cares if you're standing at the counter waiting to order. All the workers are standing next to the grill talking. After finally taking my order and waiting 10 minutes, they hand over a plain pre-made cheeseburger that's been sitting next to the grill wrapped in foil. (there were several pre-made burgers there). I tried Five Guys here on the West Coast and I'm still not impressed. My main issue is that the MEAT doesn't taste good. Over the years, I've started to like Five Guys more and more. They really get me with the cajun fries. It's SO GOOD. This location here is so so. I don't really like the setup very much, and it's always cold. Service has always been okay though. My go to is the little bacon cheeseburger. I can't eat a lot in general, so this is the perfect size for me. That plus a side of cajun fries is good enough for me! First impressions matter, especially in a place you're going to eat. I've been to probably 7 other Five Guys, from San Diego to San Francisco. All have been clean, good quality food and prompt service. Even though there are sometimes a few peanut shells on the floor, you can understand. This place, however, when we walked in, had garbage on the floor. Everywhere. It looked like someone had not cleaned the floor all day. We decided to sit at the tables outside, as it was also freezing cold inside, and a pleasant evening outside. The guy who took my order was unpleasant and clearly uninterested in helping anyone. I'm not ranking Five Guys against haute cuisine. I'm saying that it is in my opinion the best fast burger in the country. This is not my first Five Guys rodeo. I've been to 5G all across the country. Redwood City's Five Guys burgery is very nice, but the wait times can be long, as can the line waiting for the bathroom, and the self-serve condiment area can be grubby, and the self-service soda combining robot is sometimes out of flavors. However, the food is dead-on consistent, the staff are very competent and cheerful hard workers, and I'm not allergic to peanuts (like all Five Guys, they give you complimentary peanuts). They take orders over the phone, which has changed my life. I can call in my order, which makes it possible for me to not wait around outside or at an inside table. I'll still be standing in line, but it's NOT like another burger joint that will remain nameless which truly doesn't deliver an in-and-out speed experience, shall we say. read more

I really like Five Guys food. Their fries are excellent, but this place has terrible service. I was there 2 weeks ago and the place was a mess. Every table was filthy and there was a whole soda spilled under one of the tables. There were plenty of people working, so it wasn't like they were short staffed. Last night, after our movie, we tried again. When we walked in, there was no one at the register. One woman looked at us from behind the counter and just put her finger up, and said "one minute". It was obvious at that point, that she did not take orders. There were several other people behind the counter making food. A few minutes go by, and young girl comes out from the back. No apologies, or thanks for waiting, just "what would you like?" We order a very simple thing, one Little Burger. Just mustard, ketchup, lettuce and tomato. The burger was done pretty quickly, but the young man who handed it off looked like it was painful to say "thank you for coming". The kicker...our burger was not right. The best Five Guys in the bay area that I have been to thus far! Always incredibly consistent when coming in to get my food order. I only place phone call orders in, they wait until I arrive to cook the fries ensuring that they are still really crisp and delicious! I can't say enough about the staff and how welcoming and accepting they are regarding my orders. I once had an incident where my cell signal dropped while making a call in order, they still were able to start the order without me completing it with my name on it. If you have had Five Guys before, you won't be disappointed with the quality at this location, if you haven't had it before, try a nice burger and fries combo! This place is RIGHT next door to the theater. So if we're doing a matinee, we're doing Five Guys. The whole Five Guys vs In-N-Out is stupid, to moi. Yeah, both make good burgers (although both use fake cheese). But while In-N-Out has their cool secret menu, Five Guys has: - bacon (yeah, dat's right, Mr. Animal Style. What. Evah.) - Cajun Fries. The absolute bom. While Five Guys as a chain gets a five (see what I did there?) this particular one gets a four - meaning it's good. Damned good. But, it's not a five. We tend to order the same things when we go. The burgers and fries are always....ALWAYS...spot on. But, not so spot on? Free peanuts. Yeah, they're free. And yeah, that's pretty awesome. But a couple times, they've been unbelievably stale. The latest visit brought a new issue. My wife drinks unsweetened Ice Tea. The machine that they use dispenses four types of tea, depending on what button you press. This particular visit, it didn't matter what button you pushed, you got the same tea dispensed (and of course it wasn't unsweetened). And no one...NO ONE...had a clue how the machine worked, what to do about it, who to call, nuthin'. I thought was pretty weird, frankly. 10 empty tables when I walked in and everyone of them is dirty. The guys behind the counter had a hard time understanding the need to clean the tables. And also my request for a rag so I could clean them myself. But worse than really everything else was the delivery of a hamburger that didn't match even the quality of the signs in the walls. For example. I asked for a burger that was medium rare. They should have left it juicy and tasty and not overcooked. What was delivered to me was an overcooked dry thing. I needed the water to go with the burger. My fingers were virtually clean after I was done with the burger. Juicy? Not in the least. The only thing wet about the whole Burger was the condiments. The bacon that was supposed to come with my burger was in horrible shape as well. Paper thin pieces of overcooked bacon. I just don't understand how people can go here in like this place. To be very clear, DJ deserves 5 stars! He was the rockstar working a Thursday evening shift who helped me get my online order in hand when Grubhub sent it into an black abyss. Everything else about my Five Guys online ordering experience was mediocre at best. Food = 3 stars. I got a cheeseburger and Cajun fries. The cheeseburger tasted like I made it, and I'm not gifted in the kitchen. Fries were okay. Grubhub/Technology = NEGATIVE 100 STARS. When you place an order on an app for pick up, the expectation is that you should be able to pick it up relatively quickly, right? Not wait an hour for it to NEVER even get sent to the restaurant. You can't even cancel the order once it gets sent through!! I could have sent a carrier pigeon with my order and had that process faster than Grubhub, C'MON. Service = 5 stars for DJ. This dude was doing the work of 5 people while disgruntled customers were yelling at him from the sidelines (also about their nonexistent online order). The decor is a blatant rip off of In-N-Out with their red and white tiles. The food is an embarrassment to those lovely colors. The burgers are just not good. You can add toppings like bacon which is awesome in theory, but the damn burger is such a gross pile that you can't even taste the bacon. The beef isn't particularly flavored well. All of the other toppings just slop together and end up slithering out of your burger. The fries are not very good either. And the milk shakes? What milkshakes?! They don't have any. You walk inside and you see hype from different newspapers posted on big signs - which they probably paid some hotshot PR firm to get. Hype hype hype, that's what you get when you plop down $12 for a meal. Oh yah, they also give you a burger, fries, and Coke. So much hype, that what stands out more than anything is their fancy soda machine. It is fancy. I hate to say it, because it means I wasted $12, but the tastiest thing I had was a Coke. It's as if abject apathy sprouted arms and legs and opened a burger joint. The person who took our order was apathetic. The youngsters just standing around were apathetic. 28 years on this earth, 14 spent in customer service and I have to say this is by far the worst customer service. And by no less a person managing the service and providing this atmosphere to continue. I get home and start to munch on my Little Bacon Cheeseburger. Something tastes off, it's a little light and all I taste is bacon. I open it up to find everything BUT my burger and cheese is there. So I call to speak with someone about how funny it must be to forget the cheeseburger in a cheeseburger. The assistant manager, Justin/Dustin, answers, asks us the order number and time and immediately says 'oh I remember that. I wrapped it myself. I didn't forget your burger.' He says there's no way that patty didn't make it on there and is a complete sasshole to me as I say 'WHY WOULD I LIE AND OF ALL LIES, WHO LIES ABOUT THE MEAT MISSING?' He says I have to bring my burger in as evidence and I have to bring it in tonight otherwise I won't get a refund. I've never really understood the hype over Five Guys Burgers and Fries. People get excited over the peanuts and the fact that they can load their burger with as many toppings as they want from a topping list. Is it really that great though? Do you want a burger with all of the leftover condiments from your pantry? It's not like they have a special sauce they drench their burgers or a secret menu (obviously i'm an In-N-Out fan). A five guys burger is like a burger you get at your Uncle's BBQ. It's got that nice grilled flavor but that's pretty much it. There's nothing else enticing about the burger. The fries are also thick cut which isn't my preference. They often times end up soggy which to me is a fry no-no. It's also a little pricey compared to other fast food joints. If you don't already love five guys and are just trying it for the sake of trying it, skip it. Your usual burger joint is probably better. read more

I would have given it 5 stars just for the fries but I didn't get as much bbq sauce in my burger as I did at the other 5 guys place in Vacaville. The burger for the most part was good and I like mixing and matching my toppings. I do like the mix and match soda options on the fountain dispenser but I'm on a no-soda kick, so I only got to play with the water button. Booooo! I like how much fries you get with your order and we only got the regular size...it was good enough for 2 friends to munch through. Michelle C. got her grilled cheese sandwich which she immediately slapped in a handful of fries between her bread. Hmm...that should be a new topping offering: French Fries...hear that 5 guys?! We want spuds in our burgers too! The place is clean and the service is brisk. Parking is metered around the area, so come at night when you don't have to pay. read more
