This trip was no different. We had a large group of 16 and it started there. Was told a 2hr wait. If we split in to groups of 8 we'd be seated in 45. Took this option. (A table of 8 that was right next to us was vacant and NEVER got used for the entire 90 minutes or so that we stayed at the restaurant so why not accommodate our group? - strike one) Our waitress I'm told was very chippy with an attitude toward some party members. (I didnt get any attitude toward me) but heard a few people stating how she was answering people's requests and how unpleasant she was. - Strike two. The food. I ordered the meatloaf nachos (which were good). I also ordered the fried pork chops w/ side salad. Loading up on fake bacon bits (like 1000 pieces) doesnt make the salad better. This is a hint to their kitchen. The pork chops were dry and the "red skinned" mash potatoes" (which I do not remember the menu stating that they were red skinned potatoes which would mean SKIN would be present in the mash. Otherwise I would not have ordered this. ALSO, their baked beans.......this was the worst part of the meal. I am expecting some version of beans with a bbq base or similar...instead I got some sort of bean SOUP which was totally inedible in my opinion. Whole meal was trash. Strike three. My 83 year old father said at the end of the meal "worst meal I've ever had". Which I had him repeat to the table just in case anyone thought it was just me. $700 with tip for the quality is a bit much. I will never ever return no matter what my siblings say.

I opened the side of fries & there might've been about 20 fries. The serving wasn't much more than a McDonald's small fry for comparison. I opened the wings & they were average size & looked pretty decent (by now I'd fully anticipated the little parakeet wings like Zaxby's). I tried them but was definitely not impressed. The sauce, Sweet & Hot, was mildly sweet but no spice or heat at all & it tasted like basic Kraft sauce off the grocery shelf. For the cost & time I could have spent another 10 minutes & driven to Florence & gotten better food & bigger servings for much less $$. I really hate that it was such a bad experience, especially after the previous less than stellar experience. I love small businesses & really had high hopes for something new for Sumter.

They had crispy chicken, regular original chicken, chicken pot pie, fried squach, mash potatoes and gravy, livers and gizzards, greens, green beans, corn, black eye beans, mac n cheese, banana pudding, peach or apple cobbler and soft drinks...for about $14.29/person. Everything was very good with the only mentions about one of the guys thought the gizzards were overcooked and two complained about having no bananas in the banana pudding. (I think that may be a thing with buffets since bananas don't hold up very long if left out). Overall our rating was a respectable 8.75 on our ROMEO scale of 10...a 4 on the Yelp scale.

Talk about a blast from the past!…read more No menus needed buffet style! We were in Sumter for my daughter's swim meet and drove past Shoney's. Where we're from, every Shoney's closed down years ago, so I probably hadn't eaten at one in close to 30 years. I grew up eating that breakfast buffet, so when I saw that sign, there was really only one option: MAKE THE U-TURN. We had driven about three hours, hadn't eaten breakfast yet, and rolled into Sumter around 11:30 a.m. Thankfully, they serve breakfast until 2 p.m. on Saturdays, which immediately made this place a winner in my book. The buffet itself isn't huge, but it had the classics: scrambled eggs, sausage links, pancakes, French toast, biscuits and sausage gravy, home fries, grits, fatback, little chicken bites, strawberry topping, syrup, plus a salad bar. And then there was the bacon... Apparently everybody in Sumter had the same idea we did because the bacon was GONE when we got there. We stayed about 40 minutes and never saw another batch come out. Bacon was clearly the celebrity of the buffet that morning. Thankfully, the sausage links came through! They had a slightly sweet, almost maple-sausage flavor and were really good. My wife enjoyed the salad bar too. She wasn't a fan of the beets and said they tasted a little strange, but everything else she had was good. One thing newcomers should know: the buffet line is less of a "line" and more of a choose-your-own-adventure. There didn't seem to be a clear starting point or direction, so people would jump in wherever the food they wanted happened to be. Nobody was rude about it, but if you're expecting everybody to start at one end and work their way down... abandon that dream immediately. The only real downside for us was the temperature inside. It was pushing almost 100 degrees outside, and inside felt somewhere around 78-79 degrees. It wasn't unbearable, but after coming in from that kind of heat, I was definitely hoping for that glorious restaurant AC where you need a jacket after 10 minutes. We did not get that. Service, however, was excellent. Everyone we interacted with was friendly, helpful, and welcoming even though the restaurant was pretty busy. They also appeared to allow buffet to-go orders, which I thought was pretty convenient. For two adults and one child, we were right around $55. A little higher than I remembered Shoney's being--but then again, the last time I was regularly eating here I probably wasn't the one paying the bill. Most importantly, the food tasted like I remembered it. And that was worth the stop. There are certain restaurants that instantly take you back to being a kid, and Shoney's did that for me. If you remember places like Quincy's and Ryan's, then you already know exactly the kind of nostalgia I'm talking about. Was it perfect? No. Was I hot? Yes. Did I eat entirely too much? Absolutely. Would I make that U-turn again? Without hesitation.
