There is a 50/50 chance your food will be good. Sometimes it's the best burger far as fast food goes and others it just plain nasty/ soggy. I only go back because my kids like other things on the menu. This is seriously the last time. They HAVE to be using liquid smoke in their burgers. I have family in Sumter, so I've been to cookout several times. They've got a nice selection of different foods on the menu menu, and those up I've tried it all in well prepared and tasty. And this most recent visit I had a couple of hotdogs and was very pleasantly surprised. The dogs were not overcooked or left soaking in water, and the buns were fresh. Before leaving Sumter SC, my sister treated me to Cookout for my birthday. I just wanted a taste of 2 hot dogs with the strawberry shake. Since we were visiting, I will give the Cookout the benefit of the doubt since we did not eat our gub right away. The strawberry shake was thick and creamery. Tuesday night I drove to my local Cookout in hopes of a fantastic dinner. I drive up to the drive through and am greeted with the most excellent of service. Very polite and friendly. I soon come into possession of a cheese quesadilla. Let me tell you it turned out to be the most elegantly made, pleasantly tasting, and sweetest feeling thing i've ever had the pleasure of putting in my mouth. The cheesy taste mixed with the doughy tortilla blended perfectly to create a beautifully orchestral mix of flavors. And lastly the fries, the cajun fries that i ordered came out as the most perfectly seasoned pieces of joy i've ever seen. I read some of the reviews of this restaurant and I was a little scared to stop in. Well I'm glad I did. I've done two visits and I must say the food and service were very good. I'm very picky on my burgers and these are some of the best. Juicy and hot. Tried the barbecue sandwich and I must say it was very good, reminded me of growing up in Eastern NC Service was good. Her demeanor was unacceptable for customer service directly. When she literally tossed my food at me, my tray was sideways. Everything inside was in disarray. No smile no nothing . No thank you. I've eaten at the real Cook Out in Tennessee and there is no comparison. Food is cold or incorrect. It takes forever to get your order and for some reason they don't know how to give back correct change if you pay cash. I was also asked to come in for a management position at this location but they asked me to drive over an hour away for my interview and to bring my own pen. I went to the other location for my interview and the hiring manager wasn't even there as scheduled. This business is terrible and i likely will never return. read more

I know times are hard but this is ridiculous. The last 3-4 times we have come to this cookout, the amount of food we get in our order keeps getting smaller and smaller. And tonight is the worst one yet. We ordered a Chicken quesadilla tray with extra sauce on the quesadillas, and a double order of white cheddar bites for the side. As you can see from the pictures there is no sauce on the quesadillas and hardly any chicken. And the amount of white cheddar bites we got is the same as what we would get with a single order. I came here last year on my way out of town and the shake was fire!! Which is why it warranted a return visit. Got a shake a few days ago - Chocolate Cherry. Yum! Decided I needed to check out the food, but we were watching the NBA finals so went through to the drive-through window to get back to the hotel in a timely manner. The gal misunderstood our communication three times. No, we don't want three shakes! Just two. And a Cheddar style burger. Please add lettuce, tomato and mustard. This is not about the food, it's about the dangerous floor conditions. I have never come into this restaurant when I have not had to hold onto Furniture to keep from slipping on the floor. People are shuffling accross the floor like old men with arthuritus. The floors are Never Wet they're always greasy from the time the store opens to till the store closes. My daughter, too, busted a gut when she heard they were building a Cook Out here, as it's been her favorite restaurant for a number of years. Cook Out is a NC chain that has taken off like wildfire, and they're now slowly starting to trickle into SC (this Sumter location is only the 5th in the state; even Cola doesn't have one!). They're not a master of any one variety, but a jack of all. I love being able to get a corn dog as one of the sides to my BBQ sandwich. We were passing through Sumter on our way back to Ohio in order to visit some of the places I used to hang out at when I was stationed there 23 years ago (anyone remember Roxy's, then Tricky Woo's...and now the shuttered Club Miami? Yeah, that was popular with the base at the time). We were about to leave Sumter for the long, long road trip home when we passed by Cook Out. We are of firm mind that when you see a parking lot full of cars at 9pm on a Thursday, there must be something good. So we went in. First thing is, and this is something I have never liked with anywhere, the menus are a tad crowded, but once you understand their system it is really easy for me to choose what I wanted. I ordered the regular hamburger with the works with a side of chili and cole slaw. One thing that stuck out right away was the service. Seriously. The staff were kind, courteous, and helpful the whole time we were there and it was kind of busy. It really felt like we were being taken care of. As for the food, it was very good, considering that the whole meal ticket was just over $12 for me and my son. It also came out quick and hot. The burger was quite good, however, you could tell the cole slaw came out of a package and wasn't made there. I am not sure about the chili, but it was a solid meat chili with some kick. VERY enjoyable. But the burger, that is what I REALLY wanted. It was hot, juicy, and filled the bun nicely. I can attest to the variety of shakes that Cook Out has to offer. I was VERY impressed. I cannot, however, judge the quality of the shakes simply because I don't like milk shakes and hardly ever order them. I fully believe that if you go to a place that claims it makes a good (whatever the dish is) on the outside of the very building it sits in, I am going to order that dish and be a judge of it. I was not disappointed with Cook Out. If you want a good burger and only have a couple of dollars to do it, I recommend Cook Out. Shoot, if you wanted to just have a good burger without breaking the bank, Cook Out is a solid choice. We will definitely go there again if we find our way back through Sumter. read more

This place is disgusting inside. The tables were all dirty, trash on the floors and the rabletops are sticky. The seats and tabletops smell like sewage, guessing they use dirty rags to wipe them when they bother. I have always liked cookout shakes and normally use the drive thru... but i cant remember any other cookout being as grimy as this one. Now I will always be worried about the filth inside even if I drive up outside. Such a shame to have laziness and slack management ruin a nice place to grab a shake with your kids. read more

Good for a quick meal. I've had a few experiences where my food wasn't that good. But overall I usually get what I want and fresh which makes me happy. On a visit to jolly ol Sumters we stopped here while making food shopping errands. The milk shake list is too expansive and original to list. If you can think about something good, they make a shake out of it-- egg nog, peaches, Banana pudding, fruits, candy, and more... I don't think they sell malts though, and if they don't they need to. That'd be the difference between great shakes and out of this world. They're super thick too... If you get a combo and expect a substantial amount of chilli- don't. They give you a shot glass (1 oz) "portion" [is that really a PORTION???] or chilli when you get the combo. It's pretty worthless. Nevertheless the chilli is tasty, but seriously, that size is a joke. The cajun fries were tasty and a good amount for a combo portion-- don't expect a heapful. They're pretty cheap on their sides, point blank. The drive thru service left a lot to be desired, but I didn't care. Stopped in here on our way out of town, prepping for a very long car ride. I got the steak style burger (A1 sauce, my favorite!) and my bf got the cheddar style. Go there to get a milkshake. They are quality and tons of choices. The fruit ones usually have huge chunks of whatever flavor they are including the watermelon. Peach cobbler was particularly good. My wife ordered us lunch on 9/25/22 in the drive thru. Once she got home with the food (25min ride) she realized that only half the order was in the bag and the other things that were in the bag were wrong. Both sweet teas were "unsweet" also. She drove back up there with the drinks, food and receipt. The girl at the front "Shalonda" told my wife that she was not gonna remake the food she had given us. She gave us the food that wasn't in the bag from the initial order but would not give us fresh food after it had been in the bag for the 25min ride home and then 25min back up there to retrieve the original order. With that being said, we were forced to eat food that had been sitting in the bag for roughly 1 1/2hr. Management at this dump should be terminated and morals should be instilled.
