    little bacon burger

It's tough to be a burger joint in a city like Winnipeg. We are so lucky to have so many amazing burger places - with many of the famous ones being small family run operations. I had heard so much about this place and maybe the hype led to my disappointment. Going in all, I knew was that this place uses all fresh ground beef, no preservatives or fillers, they use fresh potatoes (and even tell you where the potatoes are from in the store). We went close to closing, which is 10 pm (daily) - the place was winding down so our orders were filled very quickly. They give out free bulk peanuts here and their fries are cooked in peanut oil so a warning to those with peanut allergies. It's one of those joints where people deshell the peanuts and leave it all over the floor. I get the folksy antics of throwing peanut shells on the ground but it just makes the place look dirty and gross. That being said, the peanuts are AMAZING. LOL. yeah, I have to say that the best part of Five Guys are the free peanuts. Perfectly salted and oh so good. Back to the main purpose of this trip....it's a simple menu of burgers (regular which is 2 patties or the "little" burger which is a single patty) and fries (salted called "Five Guys" or "Cajun"). There's even a veggie and grilled cheese sandwich for the vegetarians out there. Opted for the little bacon cheese burger and the little cheese burger and regular fries ($3.50 and comes in the size of a large plastic drink cup). All that came to $17.10 after tax. It's about $5-$8 for single or double burger which a lot of people are complaining as pricey. But let's be real, they're using real fresh ingredients unlike some major fast food places where you pay $2 for a tiny processed burger. Cheeseburgers at VJs is $5.10 and $5.50 at Mrs. Mikes. So let's cut these places some slack for using real ingredients. The burgers can be loaded up with a lot of different ingredients and you have the choice of A1 steak sauce, BBQ and hot sauce to add on as well. I chose "all the way" - mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, grilled onions, mushrooms, ketchup and mustard. All those toppings make a really messy burger, kinda like a Fat Boy. The BBQ sauce is good - more smokey than sweet and the bacon was good without being overly salty. The burger meat itself is surprisingly bland so it's really the toppings that you taste. Now I will say the burger patty tasted really fresh, moist and almost healthy - yeah that sounds weird to say but it did. I like a different type of burger, a more Winnipeg style burger with stronger flavours and that grill top exterior on the patty. So the Five Guys one tasted very mild comparatively. It's a good burger but I still prefer the local Greek family operated burger places instead. The cajun fries were disappointing - the seasoning was a bit muted, sort of like popcorn seasoning and the fries weren't very crisp (almost soggy). I'd go for the regular Five Guys version next time. Service was really friendly and prompt. Since opening about a few weeks ago, they say the line has been non-stop at peak hours (~15 min wait). So try going during off peak hours for the next while.

They cook it all in front of you.

Big burgers, great selection. A little pricey for a fast food place, but definitely worth it

I don't really give out 5 stars that often but this place really deserves it. I am still shocked and amazed at how good their burger is! I ordered the cheeseburger ($5) - kinda pricey compared to VJ's. But Mrs. Mike's burgers are bigger comparatively speaking. The cheeseburger is on a sesame bun, probably the size of a whopper. The patty is just slightly bigger than the bun and cooked with a slight crisp on the outside but still juicy inside - I love that! The flavour of the beef patty is perfectly seasoned and balances so well with the cheese, pickle, chili, onion and mustard. They don't put too much chili on their burgers so it's not as messy to eat but you still get the chili flavour. Of course I had to order their fries ($3). Now I'm torn on their fries because I was expecting the type of home cut fries (with the skin on) like at VJs but the ones here look and taste like McDonald's fries (although they taste a bit better than McDs). I have my moments when I love McD fries but when I am going to a local burger joint, I totally expect more "homestyle" fries. So maybe that pulls them down to 4.5??? I don't know...it's all subjective anyways and I'm neurotic enough to get a cheeseburger here and drive down to Broadway to get the fries at VJs. LOL. I was pretty full after finishing the cheeseburger and eating half the fries but I didn't feel too gross. You know that feeling when you've stuffed yourself with too much greasy food. So 5 stars for the cheeseburger and 4 stars for the fries = 4.5 stars, but I gave them the 5. The place seems pretty clean and organized in the kitchen. I was a little confused about where I was suppose to place my order as there are 2 widows (one in the front and one on the side). For the most part, it seemed like you order at the front, then wait for your order and then pick up and pay on the side window but then again some people did it differently. This place closes in the winter and closes at 7 pm so it's not a late night burger joint. There is no indoor seating as there are only picnic tables on the right side, which is about as scenic as a parking lot/alley - I took mine to go. All the prices listed on the board include taxes so it'll be a round number when you pay (CASH ONLY). They have a king burger (which I'm curious to what in includes), no fat boy but maybe the king burger is their version of one??? They also serve chili fries, milkshakes, and chicken fingers. Note: they are open seasonally (closes for the winter). Tues-Sat 11 am to 7 pm.

Very friendly service and have a great hardworking staff. The burger is quite enjoyable and indeed…read moreworth trying, it just isn't my place of choice for a fatboy.

They are sitting where it used to be vast parking spots for Chapters. I suppose that these spots are no longer needed. Yesterday, I visited Chapters and the Plaza at Polo Park with Winners, HomeSense, and Urban Behavior. All four stores do not have public washrooms. Bummer. I left the hotel at 10:45 am. It was now close to 3 pm. My bladder needed attention. I also felt like a strawberry sundae. I ventured into this BK. It was bright and clean inside the eatery. The washrooms were off to the right. There were a couple of single stalls. Perfect! The one that I used was clean. You need to press the large square button to lock the door. When you are ready to exit, you turn the handle to exit. I looked at the menu. I saw milkshakes. I didn't see sundaes listed. I got a helpful young woman at the counter. I asked if she had any sundaes. She did. She listed all the flavours. I went with strawberry, which is my favourite. I tapped my debit card to pay. Done! She went ahead and made me my sundae. She handed it to me, along with a napkin and wooden spoon. I thanked her and headed to my rental car to enjoy it. It was -21°C outside. I felt like a sundae. Some habits don't change over the years. The strawberry sundae hit the spot. I got the perfect combination of strawberry chunks and sauce with the vanilla soft serve. I was happy. I am thankful that this place had a washroom and my strawberry sundae. I'd return again when I'm in the area. (488)

It was Papa George's for the longest time. I spent a lot of time here, mainly because I lived in this neighbourhood and worked rotating shift work for half my time in Winnipeg. Papa George's was open until 4 am most nights. I am nostalgic. I also am curious. A couple of Mondays ago, I decided to visit my old neighbourhood and check Leopold's Tavern out. I parked across the street in the parking lot near the Liquor Mart store. You have two hours of free parking there. I don't know if anyone was truly clocking time, as it was raining. I walked into the eatery. It looked so different. A female staffer at the bar said to seat myself anywhere that I'd like. I plopped myself at a table with a good view of the Germany vs Paraguay game in FIFA play. I like that you get memorabilia everywhere in this establishment. The Winnipeg Jets 1.0. A bunch of records with record labels such as Polydor. Various world tours from Styx to Eurythmics. I loved everything about it. My server was excellent. He was attentive and helpful. I got a Coke Zero to start. This place didn't have Diet Coke, so I took the next best sugar-free option. It was cold and perfect. Refills were prompt, which I appreciated. I came here on a Monday. It was happy hour all day. Yay! This place has daily specials. I got a scotch egg that was $6 for happy hour. I saved $3. My server asked if I wanted my scotch egg with chipotle mayo, or zesty mustard, or both. I went with chipotle mayo. The egg came out first. It had panko on the outside. The sausage was so good around the soft-boiled egg. I loved this starter so much. I'd get it again in a heartbeat. I got the braised beef dip as my main. It came with a side. I opted for cabbage roll soup. This meal was outstanding. The braised beef was tender. It melted in my mouth with little chewing effort. This sandwich had swiss cheese, mushrooms, caramelized onion, and horseradish mayo. A toasted ciabatta bun held everything together. I dipped it in au jus. It was so flavourful and perfect. I loved my cabbage roll soup. It tasted like a deconstructed cabbage roll in a lovely broth. It was comforting and yummy. For dessert, I got creamsicle churros. I love creamsicles. I love churros. This combination could not be bad. The orange and vanilla sauces on top of crispy churro bites were amazing. It came with whipped cream. I had a bit of it, but wasn't necessary. The sauces worked their own magic. I paid with a credit card. I tipped. I tapped. I was done! The washrooms are in the same spots, but look different. The women's washroom was clean. No issues. This eatery is open till 2 am. It's still decent if you're working rotating shifts, or like a late night bite after a concert or sporting event. I'm glad I dropped by. I had a wonderful time reliving old memories of a past eatery and making new ones by having yummy, creative, good eats. I'll be back to try more items off the menu. (289)
