Shareable fries... get the sweet tater fries and honey chipotle dip!
    Josh K.

Naturally when I visit a new place, I've gotta seek out their best burger place and put my two cents in.... enter Winnipeg's Nuburger. First off, parking is a bastard here. There is a pay lot across the street that serves the businesses in the area, and a small lot out back. Plus it's off a one way street, so, yeah, it was a joy to get to. Then, once you get parked and head into the place (which looks like a house, and you enter in through it's side door), you then get to stand immediately in the doorway and in line. Not a fan of one person taking orders, and a line going out the door. But, I've been in worse when it comes to a line and waiting to put in a food order. We go through the menu, and I take my buddies recommendation on getting the blueberry yum yum. However, because I like dead pig a lot, I get that bugger with some bacon. Ashley decides to build her own masterpiece, which amounts to a breakfast burger - bacon and a fried egg with some cheese. We get a couple sharable orders of normal fries and sweet tater fries with honey chipotle dip and rosemary dip. Next up, you get a figurine and pop a squat in the very hot seating area to wait for a runner to deliver the burger. I got a fella from The Incredibles, our burger eating neighbor next to us got a Simpsons figurine - so you get the just of it. Burgers arrive, here's my rundown: Blueberry BBQ sauce, goat's cheese, balsamic onions, lettuce, tomato and low fat herb mayo... and bacon. Lets start with the good, it's got the whole sweet/savory/salty thing going on like a champ. That blue berry bbq is a hell of a tasty little gem that works perfectly with the goat cheese. The mayo that comes with it gives it a strange flavor, not sure if I liked it? Just a strange flavor that seems out of place with the other flavors. Either way, it goes down in a few bites, and I'm licking the plate where some blue berry bbq sauce hit with some cheese. The breafkast burger was solid. It was as solid as a burger can get, and only needed a tad of ketchup to be a damn good burger. Fries... the normal fries were ok. I didn't overly care for them, but, I didn't hate them. The sweet tater (yams for you crazy folk) fries were really good. Especially with the honey chipotle dip. Huge fan of the dips they have available. Overall.... I'm spoiled given where I live and having access to some amazing burgers. This place serves a solid burger, the sweet tater fries take it from a 3 to a 4 for me. Hate the location and ordering process with a single person taking orders. Big bonus, you don't feel like you just ate a burger afterward. Good up's on the ingredients and lightness of the food here.

I think this place has been open for maybe 3.5 years or so? I've been a fan since they first open and have been eating here consistently since. And this place really deserves a 5 star for the consistently delicious burgers. Yes, it's a bit pricier than what some might expect for a burger but it's the type of burger that's worth that price. You can read up on their philosophy and all on their website. Anyhow, my go-to burgers are (in no particular order) - BLUE&GOLD $7.50 Blue Cheese, Artisan Lettuce, Fancy Tomato, Balsamic Onion, & Chipotle Aioli. My usual beef burger when I eat here. - THE DONALD $10.75 - beef burger with Black Current Shiraz Reduction, Truffle Aioli, Omega-3 Egg, Sautéed Mushrooms, Balsamic Onions, Bothwell Cheddar, Tomato, & Artisan Lettuce. super messy but oh so good....love a fried egg on anything. - SHANGHAI $8.25 - chicken burger with Inhouse Asian Slaw & Sweet Chili Mayo. when I feel like chicken....this is the one..spicy with superb flavours. their mash ups aren't available all the time but when they are....get them: - Skinny Boy - a take on the Winnipeg fat boy, this one has lettuce, tomatoes, onions, chili, mustard and half-fat mayo. - Shang-Awesome - the fabulous beef burger that got them the title of 2013 Winnipeg's Best Burger - Free-range Manitoban Beef, Canadian Goat Cheese, Inhouse Asian slaw, hot damn! mushrooms, & sweet chili aioli. - "She Chives Me Crazy" - beef burger with nitrate-free double smoked bacon, bothwell cheddar cheese, sour cream n' chives, sauteed onions, fresh lettuce & tomato with chili aioli. It really tastes like a sour cream and chive potato except there's a beef patty in there. sooooo good!!! The place is fun with their cartoon figurines and the staff are always super friendly and happy. Great place!

On vacation in Winnipeg, made a stop here on a recommendation from a friend. I was not disappointed! Had a Blue & Gold, the flavors of chipotle and blue cheese along with the fresh vegetables and lean ground beef blended well and made for one delicious burger. The fries were also nice and thick with just enough crunch. I would definitely go back! The only drawback is that the burgers are on the smaller side.

The menu is impressive. I enjoy having creative choices and burgers that are not your standard cheese, lettuce, tomato. I went with the Monster Mash Burger because it had the most flames indicating the spice level. The burger was good. Not spicy but the spice was present. I would have liked the cheese to be melted. Still it was a tasty burger with a great side salad. I stole some fries from my wife and they were spectacular. Great dining choice.

I've been to Nuburger on two occasions. The first time I came here, I had the blue & gold ($7.75, now $7.95), which came with blue cheese, tomato, balsamic onion, lettuce, and low fat chipotle. The burger was a bit messy to eat, and the juice from the tomato and the sauce caused the buns to be soaked. The burger didn't really do much for me and I wouldn't order it again. And back on the topic of buns, I forgot what type it was, but I didn't like it as much. They don't use that bun anymore now, and instead you can get your burger with the traditional buns, multigrain, or even have it "nude", which basically means your burger is wrapped in lettuce. For the side, I had freshly cut potato fries ($3.25) and just simply tossed in salt (you can also get it tossed in sweet curry salt). They also offer dips for $1, which includes chipotle aioli, rosemary garlic aioli, ultimate chili aioli, sweet chili mayo, honey dill, sweet n' spicy chili mayo, and truffle aioli (extra $0.50). I also got a glass bottled coke to wash it all down. When I got my fries, I had to send it back. Why? Because they cold and soft. It seemed like the fries they had served me had been sitting there for a while. Fresh fries made should be hot, and outside crispy. If I knew the fries were cold, I wouldn't be serving it to the customer. The server I spoke to had apologized and made a new FRESH batch of fries for me. You can find the before and after photos of the fries I got below. As you can see, my first experience wasn't that great. For my second visit, I tried the Donald ($11.25, now $11.55), which came with black currant shiraz reduction, omega-3 egg (sunny side up), sauteed mushrooms, balsamic onions, bothwell cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and truffle aioli. The burger was massive, and again messy, due to the runny egg yolk (but I love it). I should also note that after you have placed your order, they will give you a toy, which in my case was a care bear figure, and this is for them to identify you when your food is ready and is brought to your table. The fries this time were perfect, as they should be. The burger itself tasted good, but not the best I've had. Overall, if you're a burger connoisseur, you would probably want to give this place a try, as there are not many gourmet burger joints in the city.

Healthy burger?..Maybe an oxy moron...All I know is they got some delicious gourmet burgers. This house-turned-into-burger joint is a clean restaurant, with simple décor. After you order you get an action figure that will be your table order #. I had Megamind...Went with the Donald which has an omega-3 egg, mushroom, balsalmic onions, cheddar, and veggies...and I added some bacon, just in case it was too healthy. Which happened to be a good idea, since the beef was a leaner. A little messy with the runny egg, but very creative tasty burger with cool flavors with the shiraz dressing and hint of truffle oil...The yam fries were battered and super good. Light and sweet. I would definitely come back.

I was so excited to try this place. This is in a super trendy neighborhood of Osborne. I visit Winnipeg about 30 days a year for work and being from Chicago, the food in the area is far from my expectations. The yam fries and rosemary garlic aioli......soooo delicious! I also tried the chicken Shanghai bowl but the low fat chipotle mayo topping was overkill. There was just too much of it. The flavor profile was solid, but with the thick mayo and chintzy base and little meat, the ratios just didn't match up. I really wanted to love this place. Maybe I'll give it another try for an actual burger next time. .

I don't really give out 5 stars that often but this place really deserves it. I am still shocked and amazed at how good their burger is! I ordered the cheeseburger ($5) - kinda pricey compared to VJ's. But Mrs. Mike's burgers are bigger comparatively speaking. The cheeseburger is on a sesame bun, probably the size of a whopper. The patty is just slightly bigger than the bun and cooked with a slight crisp on the outside but still juicy inside - I love that! The flavour of the beef patty is perfectly seasoned and balances so well with the cheese, pickle, chili, onion and mustard. They don't put too much chili on their burgers so it's not as messy to eat but you still get the chili flavour. Of course I had to order their fries ($3). Now I'm torn on their fries because I was expecting the type of home cut fries (with the skin on) like at VJs but the ones here look and taste like McDonald's fries (although they taste a bit better than McDs). I have my moments when I love McD fries but when I am going to a local burger joint, I totally expect more "homestyle" fries. So maybe that pulls them down to 4.5??? I don't know...it's all subjective anyways and I'm neurotic enough to get a cheeseburger here and drive down to Broadway to get the fries at VJs. LOL. I was pretty full after finishing the cheeseburger and eating half the fries but I didn't feel too gross. You know that feeling when you've stuffed yourself with too much greasy food. So 5 stars for the cheeseburger and 4 stars for the fries = 4.5 stars, but I gave them the 5. The place seems pretty clean and organized in the kitchen. I was a little confused about where I was suppose to place my order as there are 2 widows (one in the front and one on the side). For the most part, it seemed like you order at the front, then wait for your order and then pick up and pay on the side window but then again some people did it differently. This place closes in the winter and closes at 7 pm so it's not a late night burger joint. There is no indoor seating as there are only picnic tables on the right side, which is about as scenic as a parking lot/alley - I took mine to go. All the prices listed on the board include taxes so it'll be a round number when you pay (CASH ONLY). They have a king burger (which I'm curious to what in includes), no fat boy but maybe the king burger is their version of one??? They also serve chili fries, milkshakes, and chicken fingers. Note: they are open seasonally (closes for the winter). Tues-Sat 11 am to 7 pm.

It was now close to 3 pm. My bladder needed attention. I also felt like a strawberry sundae. I ventured into this BK. It was bright and clean inside the eatery. The washrooms were off to the right. There were a couple of single stalls. Perfect! The one that I used was clean. You need to press the large square button to lock the door. When you are ready to exit, you turn the handle to exit. I looked at the menu. I saw milkshakes. I didn't see sundaes listed. I got a helpful young woman at the counter. I asked if she had any sundaes. She did. She listed all the flavours. I went with strawberry, which is my favourite. I tapped my debit card to pay. Done! She went ahead and made me my sundae. She handed it to me, along with a napkin and wooden spoon. I thanked her and headed to my rental car to enjoy it. It was -21°C outside. I felt like a sundae. Some habits don't change over the years. The strawberry sundae hit the spot. I got the perfect combination of strawberry chunks and sauce with the vanilla soft serve. I was happy. I am thankful that this place had a washroom and my strawberry sundae. I'd return again when I'm in the area. (488)

It was Papa George's for the longest time. I spent a lot of time here, mainly because I lived in this neighbourhood and worked rotating shift work for half my time in Winnipeg. Papa George's was open until 4 am most nights. I am nostalgic. I also am curious. A couple of Mondays ago, I decided to visit my old neighbourhood and check Leopold's Tavern out. I parked across the street in the parking lot near the Liquor Mart store. You have two hours of free parking there. I don't know if anyone was truly clocking time, as it was raining. I walked into the eatery. It looked so different. A female staffer at the bar said to seat myself anywhere that I'd like. I plopped myself at a table with a good view of the Germany vs Paraguay game in FIFA play. I like that you get memorabilia everywhere in this establishment. The Winnipeg Jets 1.0. A bunch of records with record labels such as Polydor. Various world tours from Styx to Eurythmics. I loved everything about it. My server was excellent. He was attentive and helpful. I got a Coke Zero to start. This place didn't have Diet Coke, so I took the next best sugar-free option. It was cold and perfect. Refills were prompt, which I appreciated. I came here on a Monday. It was happy hour all day. Yay! This place has daily specials. I got a scotch egg that was $6 for happy hour. I saved $3. My server asked if I wanted my scotch egg with chipotle mayo, or zesty mustard, or both. I went with chipotle mayo. The egg came out first. It had panko on the outside. The sausage was so good around the soft-boiled egg. I loved this starter so much. I'd get it again in a heartbeat. I got the braised beef dip as my main. It came with a side. I opted for cabbage roll soup. This meal was outstanding. The braised beef was tender. It melted in my mouth with little chewing effort. This sandwich had swiss cheese, mushrooms, caramelized onion, and horseradish mayo. A toasted ciabatta bun held everything together. I dipped it in au jus. It was so flavourful and perfect. I loved my cabbage roll soup. It tasted like a deconstructed cabbage roll in a lovely broth. It was comforting and yummy. For dessert, I got creamsicle churros. I love creamsicles. I love churros. This combination could not be bad. The orange and vanilla sauces on top of crispy churro bites were amazing. It came with whipped cream. I had a bit of it, but wasn't necessary. The sauces worked their own magic. I paid with a credit card. I tipped. I tapped. I was done! The washrooms are in the same spots, but look different. The women's washroom was clean. No issues. This eatery is open till 2 am. It's still decent if you're working rotating shifts, or like a late night bite after a concert or sporting event. I'm glad I dropped by. I had a wonderful time reliving old memories of a past eatery and making new ones by having yummy, creative, good eats. I'll be back to try more items off the menu. (289)
