The meat I purchased was intended for Christmas dinner and was bought one to two days prior to Christmas Day. I went to Five Points Meat Market to purchase approximately 11-12 bone-in short ribs. The total came to about 8.5 pounds, costing over $140. I have purchased meat from Five Points Meat Market in the past and previously received satisfactory cuts, so I did not thoroughly inspect the short ribs at the time of purchase. When I prepared the ribs on Christmas Day, I discovered that the majority of the cuts were almost entirely fat. I trimmed away as much fat as possible, but even after trimming, the ribs remained excessively fatty. Out of the entire order, I was only able to salvage about six ribs with a reasonable amount of meat, and even those still contained significant fat. Three of the ribs were unusable and had to be discarded due to the lack of meat. Because it was Christmas Day and grocery stores were closing as I was preparing dinner, I had no choice but to cook the ribs anyway. Despite removing most of the visible fat, a couple of my family members experienced mild stomach discomfort due to how fatty the meat was. While I understand that short ribs naturally contain fat and this is a dish my family prepares often, I have never received such poor-quality short ribs before. There were leftovers, but no one wanted to eat them. Overall, this was an extremely disappointing experience, especially given the price. In hindsight, I should have purchased the short ribs from Sprouts, where the cuts appeared to be significantly meatier, less fatty, and 100% grass-fed at a lower cost. read more

Hubby and I went here looking for grass fed grass finished beef (high omega 3 beef), and today they had chuck roast so we bought half of all they had in the store. We really need a local butcher shop that offers grass fed grass finished beef for health conscious customers who live here. Giving 4 stars because the grass finished beef they had was very nice and a fair price, yet there were literally no other selections today. Came here recently to try to get some meat for Memorial Day bbq. It's nice that they were open on Memorial Day at least until 3pm when I called. Not around the area but was having a small get together at a relative's house. Was in need to find some meat for some last min bbq. Found this place on Yelp. I parked in front but looks like they have parking in the back. Though the prices was a bit more expensive than others, it's the quality of the meat. Staff were nice. Ordered two NY steaks and a Prime Rib which they gave me an option but in the end, they picked a good one for me. The NY Steak was pretty good. No need for steak sauce. So juicy. Best NY strip I've ever had! My husband is an amazing smoker, bbqer and he's made many NYs THIS meat was prime delicious! The shop is great! Clean and all about the meat! They're so nice and helpful! There's a wall of sauces and seasonings as well as plenty of other goodies...They even have a small produce section. We bought a couple of massive baking potatoes and as you can see in my picture I turned it into an incredible twice baked masterpiece! I'm happy to have a genuine meat market in Ventura again. The new owners have renewed the market to a dependable and quality source for what a meat market should be. I had stopped supporting the previous owner because of a number of quality issues. Now, with the new management there is a night and day difference over the past. Much better now. As for cost, you get what you pay for. You will pay more compared to the average grocery store but the quality of the meat at Five Points is far superior. Don't go by the menu that you see on previous reviews: it's under new ownership, and they only have one item - a tri-tip sandwich. The sandwich is extremely plain and comes with mayonnaise already grilled-in. No condiments and not much else. The meat was a little on the old side, so any possible smoke flavor was gone by the time it got into my sandwich. Service was acceptable for only 1 person behind the counter, but there was no one in the store whatsoever. No one came in while I was there. The place is spotlessly clean and there were no unusual odors. Would I go back? I don't think I would unless they expand their menu beyond the one tri-tip sandwich they have. read more

Ok, so it took me some time - but I finally found Main Street Meats on Yelp and gave them a try. Bought meat for the week here is my rundown: Day 1 - Beef Hotdogs - Wow, honestly the best hotdogs I have ever grilled. No extra chemicals just great ingredients. Better better than Costco or Dodger Dogs ( the old/ better ones) Day 2 - Stuffed Pork Chops - outstanding, apple bacon and great seasoning. Seriously good! Day 3 - Whole Roast Chicken - got this for free for spending over $100. Seriously good! Great flavor and perfect stock for follow on chicken soup Day 4 - New York Steaks - Serious commitment to steak and flavor. Cooked up perfect and better than my local restaurant steaks. Day 5 - Grilled Chicken Thighs - made my favorite honey lemon chips chicken shawarma with these - wow! So tender and flavorful. Conclusion - this is my new favorite butcher! We have been coming here for years now, for Holidays Prime Rib to weekend dinners for steaks and was always Amazing. I know there is a new owner and we gave them a try for the Christmas Prime Rib, I was very disappointed with the prime rib we ordered ahead of time this year. I am definitely a fan of small business and those who maintain personality and professionalism. I walked in to this amazing establishment and one of the owners greeted me. Rick (the owner) is one of the most personable and friendliest business owners around.When I came in hungry and asking about sandwiches (if they offered them)... he was more than happy to make me one! I had no idea that they were primarily making them on a Saturday and (with today being Tuesday) - he totally had no problem doing that without me having to ask for an exception! His words (or from what I remember) - "I know what it's like to be hungry so... I have no problem doing that". He even gave me a combo meat sandwich (tri-tip and brisket). The meat was beyond flavorful and tender and the price for that quality of meat was beyond affordable.I'm so grateful that this business is around. Love this place and everything about it! I buy my holiday meats from here and meats for dinner parties. I love prime meat and they are dry aged (Say what?!!) if you have never had dry aged prime cut steak you don't know steak! You aren't going to get these cuts from Winchester, Prime Steak House or any other steakhouse in Ventura...unless Main Street Meats is their supplier. I ordered a bone in, dressed and tied 7 lb seasoned prime rib for Christmas it fed 5 people with seconds and there was quite a bit left in a stuffed ziplock gallon bag. We are so blessed to have a reall butcher in town! I'd like to see some pickled pigs feet and other delicacies using other animal parts...tongue, Rocky Mountain oysters ()...I think they would sell! The staff are so knowledgeable, patient and sweet! Keep up the good work. Oh yeah, almost forgot, my son who is 32 and dies not eat beef was salivating over this prime rib...he wanted to taste it so bad but he says since he hasn't eaten beef in so long his stomach always hurts when he tries to eat it. I told him he had to taste it and suggested he could always chew a piece and spit it out after. He jumped at that idea. He loved the prime rib! I have been to this place several years ago, and did not have a great experience with their dry aged beef. I thought I'd give it another try with some baby back ribs. I paced the order and paid in advance for 3 racks of ribs, which they told me, came to 9 lbs. total weight, equaling $ 89.55. The person on the other side confirmed the weight at 8.87 lbs. when I picked them up. I got home and weighed them it was 8.01 lbs. I don't mind paying for quality meats, I don't like being over charged. I will not be returning to a place that is dishonest. read more

Before the new owners, I had been a pretty frequent supporter of this location. Since the new ownership has taken over I have been there three separate times and not once was I ever greeted by anyone. My wife and I tried their sandwiches and one came with barely any meat on it while the other one was not that impressive. Each time I was being helped, which seemed like I was inconveniencing them, and I was spoken to like it was my first time purchasing meat. The final straw for me was when the young guy behind the counter bad mouthed the previous owner while telling me that what she sold was not what was advertised and what they had was the real deal. I do not support businesses who think they can gain more support by trash talking other businesses. It's a shame that it had to end this way. read more

I don't like giving a local business a bad review but I'm mad at myself for not mentioning this to one of the three people who were working, but with three people working, someone should have noticed this. I went in here this evening for some BBQ tri-tip because I'd had it a couple of years ago and it was really good. Anyway-they didn't have the BBQ one, but I bought some anyway. Afterward, I wandered over to their vegetables to see what they had. It's MAY 10, AND THEY STILL HAVE A THANKSGIVING DISPLAY UP. There are shriveled, oozing squash sitting there. There are tons of fruit flies and about a dozen leaky, gross "used to be vegetables" right in the middle of their fruit and veggie table. If I had seen this first, I wouldn't have bought anything. If they can't manage to clean up the place, I can't imagine what's growing behind the scenes. read more

I have using Main Streets Meats for years now as my exclusive meat source. The meat is so much better than what you can buy at your typical grocery store. Rare cuts and special ready to cook (stuffed chicken breasts) meats are always in the display case. My large (13) family loves the ultimate burgers, amazingly fresh chicken, and porterhouse steaks. First of all the shop is a great set up. There's a market area right when you walk in with goods including some local produce. Then there is the meat counter with a wide selection and then on the far left is a deli area. We had the pulled pork bowl and tri tip bowl. The meat in both was fantastic! The pulled pork was my fav. Food safety? I and my assistant witnessed a woman use her bare hands to reach into the meatcase and pick up my food. A woman who I believe to be an owner* witnessed approvingly also. I and my assistant asked for "morrow bones"; the woman who persumably is the owner* reached in a freezer locker and pulled out a large section of femer, wrapped in butcher paper. I purchased and baked this femer bone. The bone had no marrow. Fat melted and flowed onto my oven's floor. This so-called marrow bone had been intentionally stuffed with congealed solid white FAT. *This was not my first visit. Neither woman has introduced themselves in an otherwise empty store. I've felt like an intruder all 3 visits. read more

The meat here is delicious and priced reasonably. The staff is super friendly and helpful and the dry-aged meat is pretty good. The only thing that I'll say is that the meat does lack that dry-aged flavor that I would really expect, but 30 days isn't really enough to get a super funky flavor and when I look in the window I see lots steaks in bags, which isn't really dry-aging. But for the price the outcome is always delicious. I wish they offered steaks that have been aged a variety of times or at least full sub-primals. read more

I've only been here once, and once is enough. I came to try the sandwiches for lunch since I had driven past it so many times I thought "why not". I ordered to go, a Reuben and Bitchin Beef Sandwich with the kale salad and cucumber and peperonchini salad as sides. Initial thoughts about the shop, good selection of unique items, (The BU kombucha on tap and nice selection of their flavors...the only reason they earn an extra star above 1) and friendly service. Wait time wasn't bad either so I got my food in about 10 minutes and left. The reason my review is so bad is because the quality of the food was really bad. The Reuben sandwich was cold, the cheese wasn't melted and the bread wasn't toasted, it had some sauerkraut on it but it didn't taste crunchy and sour like i expected, and slathered in the sauce which I wouldn't even call thousand island. I feel like I could have made a better sandwich, nothing special. My boyfriend had the bitchin beef, and it was a similar experience, the bread was so thick, cold and dry you could barely taste the meat or other toppings. I tried a bite and wasn't impressed and asked him what he thought, and all he was meh, it's OK. Even though I wasn't thrilled, mediocre overpriced sandwiches shouldn't warrant a 2 star review, but a side salad with wilted and BLACK pieces of kale and broccoli slaw do. Are you kidding me? This looks like it had been sitting for over a week, it was sloppy and soggy, and literally inedible. The cucumber "salad" was just giardiniera. I like to try new places and find local favorites but hard pass on this one unless I'm coming for something prepackaged to buy. read more
