Was on a 3 day trip aboard the Intrepid and when we arrived back at the dock, Five Star had a little station set up to where they took your info and your fish and would call when it was done. I just took a drive over to their processing plant after sitting around at the dock killing time and was only in their office for about 20 minutes and my fish was done! Vacuum sealed and their employees loaded it into my cooler for me and loaded my cooler into my truck. A lot of places say "we are the best", don't be fooled, take your fish to Five Star! Would like to give a 5 star review to the shipping department and a specific acknowledgement to Lexi who was awesome working through some logistics issues with the government shutdown and my own personal schedule. My first experience using a processor and it was fantastic. Five Star handled everything from the time we got off the boat until we picked up our order a few days afterwards. To be honest I was nervous when the captain announced we were done fishing, heading back to the landing and that a processor would be available at the dock (rather than cleaning fish on the boat which is what I've been accustomed to). Extremely satisfied with Five Star! They're a well oiled machine and very organized. We'll definitely be using them again for those larger catches, they do it well for sure. read more

Last weekend I booked a fishing trip at the last minute. When I showed up at the dock with my 254 lbs of bluefin tuna I approached the table set up for Five Star. The representative told me I wouldn't get same day service but they would take my fish, clean it, put it in vacuum sealed bags and freeze it even though I didn't make a reservation. I was so relieved because they wouldn't have fit in my car. I highly recommend that you make a reservation, especially if you want same day service. When I went to pick it up the front desk was courteous, answered all my questions and one of the workers helped me load it into the coolers I brought. This service really made the experience more enjoyable and I'll be enjoying this catch for a while. read more

I gave 5 star 4 bluefin from 25 to 30 pounds and 3 Yellowtail at 25 pounds each. I had approximately 66 pounds after processing. I asked for all the biggest fillets and steaks. What I got is a bunch of tiny little ends of somebody else's fish. I told them to donate 16 pounds to not pay shipping another box and give me 50 pounds of all the biggest pieces. I don't know how I have so many little pieces and a few steaks. Looks like they donated all my best biggest tuna steaks to them selves. Never again, I should have read all the negative reviews. The boat recommended them so thats where I dropped off. I processed my own fish last year and had twice as many big steaks and 8 end cuts for poke and sushi. These guys are the worst. I specifically said donate the small end cuts and send me all the steaks. Most of the big pieces aren't even cut into steak size . Never, ever again. read more

Excellent service. Captain of our boat made arrangements with five star to meet us at the dock and process our fish after hours since we came in so late. Very organized. We had to come back a few days later to pick up the fish and hit really bad traffic getting there. (It took us over 3 hrs to get there!) We got a hold of front office and she said she would stay 10 min over. We just made it two minutes before closing. They brought our fish all neatly packaged and loaded it into our ice chest. FYI: don't put ice in your ice chest to transport it. We were told it actually brings the temp up. Also there's a 3.4% service charge if you use your credit card. I was on the water by San Clemente island when finally I was able to get two bars of reception. I called Five Star. They immediately answered the phone and were able to take my reservation for 5 AM the next morning without hesitation. They made it simple, efficient and easy. I asked for next day pick up and was called at 10am the next morning with a "your fish is ready for pick up." They even loaded it up in my truck for me. Fisherman's processing lost a customer. First time user of Five Star. Joined a trip via stand by. Thought I had a reservation with Five Star, but learned it was for my October 8 day trip. Woopsie!!! Five Star more than accommodated my processing need despite my oversight. They were very polite in noting that by not having a reservation I would be processed last - no issue for me! Facility was clean and everyone polite, so no complaints there. However, I turned in 79lb & 37lb whole Bluefin from a Fishermans Landing trip. On pickup, yield seemed light with only 2 trays of fillets. When I got home I looked at the bellies. If you look at picture it really looks like portions are missing. I sent email politely requesting if this yield appeared correct......no response. I weighed total and came out to approx 37%, close to their advertised 40% yield. What's crazy is when I fillet myself, I yield over 60%. I would not be surprised if these companies first fillet your fish then count out ~40% of fish to give you and who knows what happens to the rest? Anyone else have similar experience?? I'll be looking for other other processors in the future or go back to doing myself. read more

This processing place is not honest, trustworthy, or reputable and they try to slander other's reputations when they get caught in their deceit. I dropped off 43 pounds of yellowtail and yellowfin filet the day of my fishing trip return (30 June 2022) and I opted to pay the higher price for them to finish processing the filets after I paid the crew on the Legend to filet the whole fish (which I watched them do). When I picked up the frozen processed meat, the total weight was 24 pounds, including the 3mm plastic vacuum packaging. I called them on the discrepancy when 1.) it was all labeled "YT" (no yellow fin labeling at all) and 2.) I lifted the bag I put all the frozen packages into and it felt about half the weight I had brought in. They re-weighed it at 24 pounds and then said there must have been a lot of "waste". 43 lbs of filleted skin-on tuna processed, but only 23 lbs final yield? If they felt the fish loss would be unusually high, they should have called to voice their concern. When pressed about 21 pounds being "waste'" the "Five Star Fish Processing" employee told me the crew of the fishing boat "Legend" must have ruined it when they filleted it and their team had to cut out all the "ruined" meat, bad gaff wounds, the skin and blood lines. When I told them I watched the filets being cut and had photos of the gaffing not causing meat waste, he offered 7 pounds of processed Blue Fin to offset the discrepancy. The photo of the "processed" BF I received and discovered only when I returned home sums it up. I'll let the attached photos make my final statement and you the reader can make your own judgement. Yeah, it was by sons' first time deep sea fishing and this violation of trust, confidence and unprofessional conduct is now up to me explain to them as to why they can't enjoy their catch. read more

All of the upper and middle back sushi grade filets were missing. Called as soon as I got home and left a message. A very nice woman was extremely apologetic and explained what went wrong. Basically they require a certain number of PM reservations in order to pick up and that number was not met for my trip. She said that there was a glitch in their system and I should have been contacted to let me know they would not be picking up. She said the best way to confirm pick up is to contact them through email. They were not close to the Delivery time promised (having me sit in my car outside for more than a few hours, second time was 7 hours.) The reason is because this place is driven by money hungry owners not a business owner who cares about the quality of work or customer service. The only reason I used 5 star was because we caught way to much fish to process on the boat and timing of getting back late. The only thing I'd say to customers is make sure you tell them exactly the way you want it packaged especially if you want special cuts off your fish and bring coolers there boxes are kinda of expensive @35 or 40 bucks a piece. Never use 5 Star fish processing in Point Loma CA. I just spent over $1,600 to have my fish processed and I did not get what I asked for. If you value your fish do not use this company. I requested one and 2 pound packages with only a few 2 lb. packages because there are only 2 of us in my household when I was going to give away the 2 pound packages to our friends who have bigger families. Not only did I not get even one, 1 pound package, all of the packages were over two a nd a half pounds with several being 3 and a half pounds. What am I supposed to do now when I go thaw out and open a package I use half of the package or less and the rest is going to have to be either given away at that moment, at fish for three days or thrown out. I went inside and told the lady who took the order at the pier we have a problem I told you when you took my order I wanted only a few 2 pound packages and the rest 1 pound packages what do I do now? She looked at me like she didn't understand (which she didn't seem like she understood english very well at the pier) now seeing and hearing her in the office I could see she doesn't understand very well. I turned to the other lady and said what do I do? I have too large of packages for me to use. In my house we are only 2 people and she just looked at me and turned away and walked into the office when she realized what a huge mistake this young girl did. I had over 850 pounds of fish to process. I had to stay overnight in a hotel to wait for my fish to be processed and frozen because I had an 8 and a half hour drive to get home and needed it frozen to make that long of a trip. I looked around the room and everyone that was within hearing distance that worked there all of a sudden decided to leave the area and there was no one to speak to except the girl that couldn't speak very good english. Since I had already paid for everything no one was willing to fix the situation and the girl had no idea what to do. I explained to her where she made the mistake and she showed me on the paperwork where she took the weight of the fish and it was marked 2 pound packages. I tried to explain to her saying "you wrote it down incorrectly because apparently you didn't understand what I said, thinking that you did understand, that's not my fault." Her response was "it says two pound packages here." I go fishing out of point loma 2 or 3 times a year and have yet to come back with less than 500 pounds of fish to process. I even used this place last October and I asked then only for 1 pound packages and ended up getting over a third of my fish in two pounds or more size packages. I thought I would give them another chance. What a huge mistake. Never again will I use this company and will tell everyone I fish with to not use them.
