Located in city heights just east of the I-15 on University Ave. sharing the same small strip mall with Saigon sandwiches and other businesses. A great selection of seafood here for such a tiny place at near wholesale prices. We come occasionally for shrimp and the frozen boxes of tilapia. These come as individually frozen fillets- which for us, makes all the difference in the world. Take out only what you really need. Defrosting is quicker this way so you can prepare different ways with ease. So, one time I'll do lemon pepper, then blackened the next. Or, even just garlic and butter. We also occasionally will make a batter for fried fish tacos too! Tilapia is a very mild, versatile fish for cooking and the rest of the family does not like any fishy or strong flavors. I, on the other hand, do not mind this as long as its not overbearing. Store has been very clean and well organized every time I've been. They have live catfish, lobster, blue crab, fresh and frozen shrimp, clams, oysters and such that is delivered almost daily according to the manager. I'm definitely long overdue for a trip here, and I actually have plenty of freezer room right now. Be prepared though when you walk in, to be smacked in the face with strong, seafood smells. I made a quick first visit to Trang's the other day, just to get an idea of the setup and selection. Trang's is in the same strip mall with Café Dore and the Tamales Oaxaquenos ladies. The shop was smaller than I'd anticipated, but it seems to be run very efficiently. There are a couple of freezers up front, then a cash register, a deli counter containing fish and shellfish, and at the back, a guy cleaning fish. Oh, and live blue crabs, and some oysters and clams on ice, near the rear entrance. My first thought was that I prefer the larger selection I've found at World Foods and 99 Ranch Market. NOTE: I really miss the massive live tanks at the long-since-gone Vien Dong at Linda Vista and Ulric; live shrimp in a grocery store! But here's something: one of Trang's owners(?), Amanda, speaks perfect English, something I can't count on at the larger shops, and it's my sense that if I needed a special order, say, a 40 pound sack of live crawfish or a 50-pound box of live blue crabs, Amanda could make it happen for me. Good place to find seafood for a good price. They carry a great selection of shrimp. Sometimes they have live shrimp which is hard to find. They also carry live catfish and tilapia. Depending on the season, they will have various mussels and clams. I usually go here for the live blue crab. Prices are good or comparable to other seafood markets. Very small and tight market. Being a seafood market, its not going to smell like fresh flowers inside. The customer service is excellent. Just be aware, the parking gets really busy here. I searched up where to get oysters on Yelp and this place came up. It's a small seafood deli type market in a small plaza that serves fresh seafood. It was my first time buying oysters from a market and this place was great. $12 dollars for a dozen of small oysters. I asked if they had ice for the oysters and they happily put some in the bag for me. They didn't have lemon but stores next doors did which I also picked up some Tabasco hot sauce. I love this place because they are close to my house and they carry live blue crab. A lot of places in SD don't have blue crab live. I called just a couple days ago and they had them in. They were a pretty big size and super juicy! They also helped me with the blue crabs to get them into the bag. So I don't have any complaints. They are a $1 or $2 more per pound than other places but I only get a dozen which came out to about $38 with tax, so its not that big of a deal. If you need seafood come here. read more

I have struggled with the idea of living in a beach city without having any fresh seafood for too long until I found Trang. I had assumed the store was Vietnamese, till the owner told me she was Chinese, bummer ( jk). But the workers there ( I met a couple Mexican guys) were nice. I had read another review mentioned about a old grandma staring at customers, I saw her today, she was just as any other old Asian ladies. They provided good recommendations and were fast and friendly. The fish cooked up deliciously. But, It seemed a bit untidy and there was a faint fishy smell in there (maybe to be expected). I wish I had known the difference between "butterfly" which is cleaned and sliced open and "filet" which is cleaned and sliced Into edible steaks of meat. Ask for filets of your whole fish. Also, clear eyes mean fresh fish. Never buy a fish with cloudy eyes. Everything looked fresh there. I just wish they would do a thorough cleaning and tidy the place. This is my new favorite seafood spot!! I used to always go to Point Loma seafood for shellfish, because the selection at most grocery stores is sparse and usually half-frozen, but that place is so over-priced. I was a little intimidated when I first came in to Trang's because literally EVERYTHING is in Spanish, all of the signs, everything, but the men behind the counter saw my anxious face and helped me find what I was looking for without me having to use my rusty, probably offensively horrible Spanish skills. The selection was awesome, and prices were right. I got 2.5 lbs of Manila clams for steamers for $12, and I think we have previously paid $25+ at PL. We kept them over night and made them for Valentine's day dinner, and I think out of the whole bunch only one didn't open, which is the best batch I've ever had. They also have lots of oysters, and a great selection of fish and shrimp and octopus, etc. I'll be back for sure. I just wish it was a little closer. read more

Just bought live Maine lobsters yesterday. Up until then I had never been here before so I didn't know what to expect. Well, not only did they have a large selection of great sized fresh live Maine lobster, they had them for a great price. I think I counted about 20 different kinds, including peeled, head-on, head-off, giant freshwater prawns, and all different sizes. They have boxes of green mussels, octopus, lump crab meat, live crabs, live fish, live lobster, oysters, clams....and even crayfish. The refrigerated case has lots of whole fish and fillets. I am new to the area so I wanted to find a good fish market. Came by here and they have a wide selection. The tilapia is meaty and pink but it comes from China. While there are conflicting reports of the quality and safety of tilapia from China, I just avoid it because there are other alternative markets from which it is imported. Went to buy 8 pieces of fish and you pay by the pound. One of the Hispanic lady's that works there assisted my aunt and I. My aunt picked the fish she wanted as the lady bagged them because my aunt did not want her fish too big. The lady rudely said "lady, you can't be choosing your own fish!", mind you with the worst attitude ever! My aunt and I looked at each other shocked and trying to process if she really just spoke to us this way! So of course, coming from a family that doesn't let themselves, we fired back and said "we are in our right to pick the fish we want to get because we're paying for it! You're not giving it to us for free and we choose how much we want to purchase!" The lady then said we "caused" her to lose count on the fish she was bagging. Again, we responded back saying, "No as a matter of fact, NO! You lost count yourself when you chose to give us attitude and argue that we couldn't choose the fish WE were going to purchase!" I know she murmured her two cents about it to the other workers and what's upsetting is that they should've been the ones to tell her that she was wrong rather than sit there and stare at us as if they were talking shit in their minds about us! You wanna lose customers? Keep up the bad customer service and if the owners take customer service serious, I hope they address the issue and fix it!! read more

Staff was very helpful. There was a very pungent smell of fish in the market but what can you expect going to a very fresh fish market. They had so many options a case full of light catfish and another kind of fish I don't know! I came in for lobster and they happily let me know the fresh lobster would be in at 3pm on that day! I'm not sure it that is the standard time that was just my experience on that day. They helped me pick out a lobster and gave me an ice bag to keep it fresh on the way home! Got a bag of blood claims, place seemed decent. Went home and my usual recipe is to just steam them open. Lo and behold, of the whole bag, only popped open after 25mins. Not a good sign. After 40mins more of steaming none of them opened. The fish might be good, but I won't come back to try that out. Stay away from the shellfish. read more

Highly recommend Trang's. No frills fish market with good selection and reasonable price. Went in to check their Alaska crabs legs, very nice size (after first looking at the ones at Vons - looked and left). I ended up getting 4 nice clusters of the crab legs - then 2 "Canada crabs" that were in the live tank. (My understanding is that this is what they call Dungeness crab.) I was looking at the dead ones on ice, when the lady pointed out they had live ones in a tank. Worth it! The family really enjoyed all that crab! read more

We visited Trangs because we wanted to buy live Maine lobster. We went there thinking the market was going to be big but the market is a really small place. They have a seafood counter which takes up the majority of the market. They have a large selection of fresh seafood. The smell in the market has a very strong fishy smell. I had to spray myself with body spray once we left the market to get rid of the smell that was stuck to my clothing. We ended up buying Live Maine Lobster at $13.99 a pound. There was an Asian lady standing on the back wall looking and staring at us...maybe she thought we were going to steal something IDK, I thought it was kinda weird.
