He communicated with us throughout the project of installing a new Timberteck deck. His crew worked straight on through from start to finish without empty lapses of time. The men are so highly skilled. We continue to be happy with our beautiful deck. Therefore, we asked Ruy to install a Timberteck stair rail at our front doors, which also has withstood the test of time. We'd been concerned that installments like this would compromise the brick, whereby requiring a total rebuild, but a rebuild wasn't necessary. He also advise us on an easy and effective fix to divert water from flowing from the gutter and freezing to ice on those brick steps in winter. Based on the outcome of these projects, and our experience in their progression, we highly recommend this company.

Brutal experience with them back in 2022-2024. They were supposed to build a new rubber roof. It started leaking on 3 separate occasions (which btw was never fully fixed -- we moved on to different contractors who did address the issues). And like I said, it would take months for them to actually come back and attempt to fix anything. Often they'd come by, look at the damage, then I wouldn't hear from them for multiple weeks. Meanwhile, more damage continues to accrue to the walls and ceilings. The internal fixes they applied for the water damage were just patch jobs. They just plastered and painted over. Meanwhile, the insulation behind the wall was soaked and accrued black mold that we had to address later. Also worth pointing out a major blunder at the beginning of the project (see attached videos and pics). They opened up the roof, and left it open for multiple days without doing any work. Well of course a major rainstorm came by (which was on the weather forecast well in advance). Alll that water poured into the house in the middle of the night setting off fire alarms. It was a nightmare to deal with on my end.

The carpentry is beautiful and looks original. The paint job is expert, even in areas that are challenging to reach. They even replaced a few broken panes of glass. The crew was extremely professional and performed high-quality work. The project manager, Andre, checked in twice daily to ensure we were happy, give us updates, and answer any questions. We are delighted with the work, and would highly recommend Powell.

Working with Powell has been one of the best experiences I have had as a new homeowner…read more I reached out to Powell to see if they would be willing to paint the basement room in the townhouse that serves as my movie room\home office. The color that the prior owners picked while nice was a bit too dark for such a small room. They responded to my inquiry the same day and arranged a date and time to stop by and look at the room. Bryan and Andre arrived exactly on time and took a look at the room. Super friendly, patient, and willing to address any questions and concerns. As part of the renovation of the room, I was planning on replacing the carpet and asked him if I should do it before painting the room or after. He strongly suggested to replace the carpet first since the installers tend to scuff the baseboards terribly as they are ripping the old carpet out. I followed his advice and did the carpet first and sure enough the baseboards were in such bad shape after that had I painted I would have had to repaint them. I'm so thankful for that. On the day of the job, Bryan and Andre introduced me to Freddie who would be painting the room for me. Super friendly, professional, and honest. After grabbing the paint, he laid down tarp to cover the brand new carpet and got to work on the walls. It's amazing how quickly he was able to paint this room. It felt as if every move was calculated. What's more impressive is that he conversed with me the entire time! During the end of day 1, Freddie called me over and informed me that the two coats of paint that the quoted me for the job would not be sufficient for cover the walls and they will need to grab another can of paint. I asked him how much extra would I need to pay on top of the quote and said nothing. They told me it would take two coats, it didn't, so it was on them to make it right. Freddie told me he already informed Bryan and he would stop by the paint store tomorrow to grab another can of paint on their dime. I wasn't expecting that at all but greatly appreciated it. In the early afternoon of the second day the room was done. I thanked Freddie and waited for the paint to dry before heading down to plan out moving furniture back in. It was then that I noticed that there were some areas in the room that we not completely covered. I reached out to Stephanie and she called back soon after and told me that Freddie would be stopping by again later the SAME day to take a look. True to their word, Freddie stopped by and took a look at the walls now that they were dry and he confirmed the coverage issues. He grabbed paint and did another pass on the walls which removed the old color. After Freddie departed I started to notice that that wall color is much much warmer that I expected. I tried various color temps on the lights to no effect. I took a look at the sample patch in the other room and confirmed that it looked very different and that maybe I might have made an expensive mistake with the paint choice for this room. On a whim I took a few pics and emailed Stephanie with my concerns. I figured at this point they'll I'm crazy and I didn't expect to hear back. After all, I chose the paint color, they painted the room perfectly, their task is done. An hour after I send the email I get a call, it was Bryan. He looked at the photos, and saw the same thing that I have seen, and he and Stephanie have been trying to figure out the root cause. It turned out that there was some miscommunication and an incorrect shade of white was used on the doors and trim causing white walls to become warmer than they should. He apologized and asked to send a couple of painters the following day with the correct paint to address. I already felt bad about Freddie having to come back so I told Bryan not to rush but he insisted. He knew I took the week off to clear out the room to get it painted, and he wanted to get the job done so I have the weekend to put everything back together so I can work on Monday. 7am the following morning Andre and another painter arrived with the correct paint and took a little over an hour to repaint the doors and trim. As soon as I stepped into the room the walls immediately cooled down. And the state of the brand-new carpet after they were done? Spotless. I love the room now. Snow like color make the room feel bigger and more comfortable. It's easily my favorite place in the house. If you're looking for painting service for your home and are within the service area don't bother looking anywhere else. It's not just the quality of their work (which is outstanding), it's their level of accountability. They will do everything to ensure that the job is done and that you are happy. They came back to my home at two separate occasions to complete one room and I didn't pay a penny more than what was initially quoted to me. I cannot recommend Powell enough and can't wait until I can get them to paint other areas of the home.

Steve at Mr. Handyman reached out right away and asked me to call him to discuss the details. I called Steve to explain a job I needed done involving an access door from my garage. He explained what he thought would be the best approach and that one of his employees would give me a better idea when he arrived for the quote. Steve explained the pricing, hourly rate, etc. and that his employee would give me a final quote before starting any work. Derek arrived on time for the appointment (I also got a text when he was on his way which was a nice touch). We went through all the details together, he explained what he would do and the estimated cost. I agreed and he got to work. He did an excellent job and the door looks great. I asked about a second project involving our swing set which he thankfully had time to include. Again, he went over all the details and estimates before proceeding. The work quality was again absolutely excellent. Derek cleaned up his work area completely. The final price came in exactly where expected, which I will also say I think is a fair price for the length of time he was here and the quality of the work performed. He asked me about any other needs I had and gave me some documentation regarding the most common jobs his company handles in case I need anything in the future. I can't think of anything about the process that could have been improved here. I would definitely give them a call again if I need anything!

Since moving into our first place back in the spring, my wife and I have used Joe for 5 separate jobs covering a number of projects inside and outside of our home. These work Joe has done for us runs the spectrum from little odd jobs to larger, multi-day projects. In all cases Joe has done a great job all around, has been very reliable and is a very neat and courteous worker and does work the right way, with attention to detail, quality and craftsmanship. We have used Joe for a wide range of projects, including installing built-in shelves in our pantry closet and hall closet, installing a custom mantel/built-in shelves unit around our living room fireplace, renovating a mahogany farmer's porch and designing/fabricating a blueboard fascia around some ductwork we had to install in our kitchen to accommodate a ventilation hood. In situations where finish carpentry is involved, Joe has a sharp eye for detail, quality and careful work. Our built-ins and mantel are all A-1 work and look as if they were original to the house being built--Joe did a great job on these. In addition to great carpentry skills, Joe also has a keen eye for design and aesthetics as well. When we were trying to decide how to cover the ductwork in our kitchen, we had thrown around a few ideas with Joe, which he took the time to discuss and quote on with us. Ultimately, though, we went with an original idea of Joe's to box in the ductwork with drywall. I think in the end this worked out for the best as it maintained the aesthetic of our kitchen better and was a less costly option as well. The point being here is that Joe has an artistic eye and design sensibility that is much, much stronger than your average carpenter. Our experience with Joe has been great. He has been very reliable for us and is a neat, clean worker who always cleans up at the end of each working day as well as at the end of the project. I would strongly recommend Joe/Old Fashioned Construction to anyone who is looking for help with home improvement projects.

Sadly, this proved to be a mistake. Things started off well but as the project wore on he became increasingly non-communicative, ignoring many important emails, which lead to construction errors (eg. a trim panel for the refrigerator was cut wrong, a toe kick piece was omitted). Other construction issues--the finish on the cherry countertop scratched very easily, the sink cut out was not entirely flush and he did not install all of the cabinet hardware. I had hoped that Shaun would stand behind his work and address these issues, but once he was paid he ghosted me and I have now had to file a formal complaint against him with the Office of Consumer Affairs and scramble to find another contractor to finish the job. For these reasons, I would not recommend him and am sorry I got involved with him. Aside from the workmanship issues, he appears to take little pride in his work, lacks integrity and is unprofessional, caring more about getting paid than customer satisfaction. I suspect he may reply to this review by denying that I was ever a client, so I am leaving my personal email for anyone to reach out and contact me for documentation of my experience with him.
