This was my second project with Nick at Fix It Once and I continue to be impressed by Nick's high standards and exceptional workmanship. This project was a major effort to repair exterior rotted wood around the house, repair our porch, prevent water intrusion from our patio, and replace 5 rear patio doors with 2 new sliding doors. It was a major project with complexities due to the condition of the house and required many decisions. I'm so grateful to have been working with Nick and his partner Dimitri. Nick's experience, communication, and integrity made all the difference. Throughout the project, Nick was an expert advisor and advocate when dealing with other contractors. In the planning phase of the project, he was able to quickly bring his window supplier into the conversation and the three of us discussed various options based on my needs and Nick's recommendations. During the project, he oversaw the contractors repaving the patio to ensure that all the details (design, pitch, properly filling in joints, etc.) were addressed to a high standard and to prevent drainage problems that were causing water intrusion. In one particular instance, he intervened to have the contractor lay in extra stones for the patio wall to make it flush with pavers - a detail that the patio guys would have missed. During the project, Nick discovered that the rotted wood was more extensive (columns and joists that were rotted through) than we expected both on our porch and in a corner of our house due to the original builder's poor workmanship and materials. Nick provided his recommendations, including excavating below the ground to access rotted wood and enable a comprehensive repair to the structural supports. He was able to get a contractor to excavate within a couple days so that he could make the repairs without delay. Nick was able to completely repair the damage with quality/durable materials and make systemic improvements to prevent future water intrusion/damage (patio pitch, treated wood, flashing tape, etc.). It's all about the details. It was clear that Nick spent a lot of time thinking about the details and doing the work in the best possible way. We've done two projects with Nick and his crew. The first was to power wash and apply polymeric sand on our back patio, which is a mix of flagstone and brick. The result is beautiful! The second project was to remove and replace pavers on our front path. The work was done on a 90+ degree day, and the crew was tireless and exacting. Nick and his team recently completed the finishing of our basement, including a full bathroom, small office, and large open play area. The work happened mostly within a four month period, at a reasonable cost. Throughout the project, Nick was in close communication to keep us updated and ensure he understood what we wanted. Our basement ceiling was particularly tricky to finish due to its low height and how the pipes were previously configured, but Nick figured out a solution for each complication. We also appreciate that he helped us fix a couple of additional issues along the way, including a leak in our living room ceiling and a drainage problem in front of our basement door. I am writing to give Nick and his business my highest possible recommendation for anything you need in the house repair department, large and small. I cannot imagine a better decision than hiring him and his crew. We first contacted him a few years ago (on the basis of some online reviews) to do a small job that we lacked time and skills to do ourselves: replace a curbside mailbox. In no time at all, we had a good-looking and securely installed new mailbox. We hired him again shortly thereafter to restore and repair our large and aging deck, and then again a few years later to do more maintenance on it. The work that he and his small crew did was superb. He discusses options with you at each point, and it is clear that he spends time thinking through alternatives -- always with the goal of achieving the optimal, most long-lasting results. So when our 1960s-era house needed some more significant window repairs, replacement of some damaged features, and a thorough cleaning and repainting, we once again turned to Nick, who just completed this substantial job for us this Fall. All told, he and his crew were here for a solid three weeks and a bit more, working from morning to sundown. We always knew what was happening and why. He was able to flexibly work around our online pandemic-period working schedule (not hammering at certain times of the day), and more generally was a pleasure to work with. The work itself is so professionally and meticulously done that I cannot imagine it being done better, and once again we were always consulted about decisions and alternatives. He and his crew have done numerous projects in our home including our bathroom, parts of the kitchen and most recently our family room and deck.
