TLDR: Did a video call for a quote, 3 weeks later still haven't heard back. These guys are obviously successful and have great reviews. I'd like to say the review was about their actual work but we never even got to that part. Did a video call for a quote. Waited 1 week and heard nothing. I reached out, they apologized said quote is coming in 48 hours. It's been more than 3 weeks now, still no follow up. They are obviously very busy with many clients which speaks to their success. But I don't want to work with any contractors who can't even follow up on a quote. It's a sign that they will probably forget about your project while juggling all their clients. Typically that's a bad sign in the construction industry. Sad because those reviews really had me sold. read more

Outstanding work ethic. We had 2 separate jobs with Fix It People over the last year as 2 different houses. The first job was several drywall fixes including a warped ceiling. Perfection- and it helped us sell our house. The 2nd job was our inept attempt to DYI a new sink. Sure we got it functioning, but still needed it scored against the wall, better water lines that weren't kinked, and it was leaking. I appreciate her commitment to customer satisfaction and I feel like she genuinely cares about her company and its reputation. She didn't have to acknowledge my experience or make an effort to improve it. Feeling heard was my goal, and she more than did that. I thank her for that hallmark of a business owner who cares. Original unedited review: A rating based on the efficiency and work alone would be 5-stars, unequivocally (you might want to stop reading there.) Repeating: the work is deserving of 5-stars. Longer version: Fix It People was amazingly responsive and were able get to my job before other contractors could. For that, I knowingly paid more than double what two other companies quoted. That's on me and was my choice to make, or not. I made it and I paid the invoice within an hour of confirming its accuracy so this isn't a matter of being unable to pay. The person who did my job was professional and he was a pleasure. Great workmanship, condescending customer service. I won't go into details that don't matter for this review, but I had reason to believe that the video estimate was higher than it should have been, even factoring in that Fix It People are at the highest end of the scale. (Again, I knew that going in.) The final invoice was even higher than that. I sent an email asking if the estimate could be reconsidered. I wasn't asking for them to cut it in half or anything ridiculous. I literally just asked them to reconsider it. I received a response that was pure mansplaining couched in borderline obsequiousness, very inflexible and ultimately insulting. (And I say this as someone who works in a sector where I deal with nonsense daily.) That's how they choose to run their business and clearly it works. We reached out to Fix It People Chicago and they were able to provide us with Raul who was amazing!!! He came into our home and offered up suggestions so we would be happy with the end result. This place might be good for small repairs but definitely not for large projects. I had a plumbing issue in my ceiling and everyday there was a new issue with new cost that would lead to more of their people coming in getting paid. I had 3 different plumbers come in after I told Fix It People stop what they were doing cause I had a feeling they were being dishonest. All 3 licenses plumbers said the same thing, why did he cut those pipes and open up all of the walls that he did. I said I know it made more work for their drywall guy which leads to more work for their painter. I would never use them again and then they charge me $1300 for this guy to come to my home and work a total of 6 hours and then leaves his garbage in my house. Total hack job, worse experience ever. If you need more details please reach out to me before you choose them and I will send pictures and receipts and my ring video that shows how long he was actually doing work in my home. Wow! Where have these people been all my life? Are you tired of reaching contractor's voicemail and never getting a follow-up call? My experience with general contractors in the past has been borderline PTSD. From the anxiety of wondering whether or not someone would show up when they said they would to not knowing what to expect in terms of quality. I looked up highly rated contractor service on a whim and stumbled upon Fix It People. I figured I had nothing to lose. From the start of scheduling your work, you reach a very responsive person on the other end. Tom got back to me right away and was incredibly pleasant and professional. Pictures were requested of the projects that needed work (didn't have to deal with someone coming over during a health crisis), and Tom was able to accurately assess and provide a reasonable quote . Everything else was then handled efficiently by Taylar, the project manager. Taylar ensured that all information was in the system and good to go so that there was no confusion or surprises when the technician arrived on the actual day which they were able to get me in the week after following scheduling. The day of the project, technicians arrived within the indicated timeframe and ready to work. Masks were worn and technicians were very respectful and professional. I had a total of 4 technicians who came by on different days, and they all arrived early and ready to work. At the end of each completed project, they would call me to check their work and made sure if I had an questions or needed something to be redone. Stay away from this company ! First, they did an estimate via facetime (that should have been a red flag already) but I agreed to that amount. 3 days after the job started, they wanted to increase the price of the job because they underestimated the amount of work that needed to be done and, if you don't agree, they stop the job that had already started. Basically, you are a hostage until you agree to the new price tag. Then, the contract stated the job was going to be completed in 5 working days, but it took 30 days to tile a 1,100 SF condo because they sent 1 person ONLY to do the job, yes, 30 days long days. Also, you think they would clean the floor to see the final job, well, they didn't. I had to hire someone to clean tile by tile in order to give my ok to the job done. Lastly, the final bill came and of course they wanted to charge me a huge amount of money for materials that was never used. After a lot of emails back and forth, they agreed in a small discount but definitely it doesn't worth the aggravation to live in place full of dust and construction materials for a FULL MONTH and be charged almost 60% more of the original quote. Had a kitchen faucet and dining room light fixture replaced by Javar. So happy with the work he did. It took him about an hour to remove and replace our faucet and remove and replace the fixture. He did a fantastic job, wore a mask, and was very polite. We weren't sure we could properly do both jobs, and even if we could have (we probably couldn't have) it would have taken us an entire day at best. After conducting a virtual walkthrough and promising an estimate later that day - sooner than I would have expected - Fix It People never followed up and did not respond to email or text inquiries. It has now been two weeks since the walkthrough. Perhaps this company is a victim of its own success, judging by the many positive reviews, and can't keep up with requests. However, if it is unable or unwilling to take on a particular project, its staff should simply say so. Ghosting a prospective customer is neither courteous nor a winning business strategy, especially given the website content as posted below. Update: Tom, the general manager, reached out to me and explained that they have been really short staffed due to COVID, several people were out sick and it was hard to keep up. He apologized and sent me a partial refund to make up for the issues I had with poor communication. It is completely understandable with COVID that they are running behind, I just wish it were communicated to me earlier. I really liked the people who did the work and would love to work with them again. Hopefully, the company will not be stretched so thin in the long run. We had some bathroom repairs done, along with bathroom repainting. The work was done really well, we are very satisfied with the results. The reason for 3 stars (it would have been 1 star if it weren't for the people who actually did the work) is the communication with the project managers. 90% of the time I didn't get a response to my emails. Questions weren't answered, we were not informed of schedule changes. I was promised to get a quote for more work to be done (you'd think they would want to make money), still waiting for a response to several emails I sent regarding it over the last week. Got billed today for more hours than the person actually worked . For absolutely no reason. Again, had to contact them to lower the price to the actual amount of hours. Honestly, it is shockingly unprofessional, which is sad since the people who actually do the work are awesome. My experience with FIP was like trying out a modern technology. It was the experience I had never had in any house project before. When Tom and Michael came for the first visit, they arrived on time, they took most of the measurements using phone, they explained me the scope of work and they were out in 15 minutes. Next day I received detailed estimate via email. I was satisfied with the price and two weeks needed to finish the work. I scheduled the start date and made the down payment online (over the phone on the way to work :)) The work started a day later the scheduled day which worried me. However Michael assured me that he has built contingency in the schedule and everything will be fine. After that everything went as planned. Over the two weeks period Michael scheduled demo, drywall, floors and paint guy to finish the job. Michael kept me informed about the progress every evening via text. I had a hard deadline of two weeks because my dad was coming to stay with us. Michael and his team completed the work a day in advance with high quality. We used Fix It People to clean and repaint our deck and outdoor brick walls surrounding our deck . We were satisfied with work they did, however just one day after they completed their job, their were 5-10 spots on the brick wall with bubbling paint. I emailed them and they replied back saying that some moisture probably got in and that they can come back and scrape/re-paint those areas... still waiting for that call back weeks later. The work I had done was very poor quality. When the guy fixed my bathroom light he gouged the ceiling and put the light on the same switch as the fan. When I asked him if he could put the light on the other switch, he tried to tell me why he couldn't do it that way, but then I guess he changed his mind and was able to do it pretty quickly. Then he moved on to my closet door. This was fixed very poorly. 3 nails in the bottom that stuck out and looked like crap. He did not clean up after himself and tracked saw dust everywhere. When the closet broke again 6 months later, they initially said they would come by and fix it for free, which I thought was an awesome sign of accountability. However, when that same guy showed up he said that he told me the initial fix was a temporary fix and that I just needed to buy a new door. I agreed to buy a new one and he said he would go pick one up and be right back. 2 hours later I was still waiting to hear what was going on, because I had taken the morning off of work to get this taken care of. Turns out he couldn't find the right door and they were going to have to order one. AND the installation would no longer be free as the repair guy had told me it was only a temporary fix, which I do not remember being told. Overall, I felt they disrespected my time during their last visit. If they had contacted me when they realized they were not going to be able to get the door that day, I could have made it to work without having to take a half day. I felt the repair guy was mad that he had to come again and therefore strung me along. VERY unprofessional. I will not use this company again, and suggest that you don't either. read more

I have had Fix-It People for several projects, most of which were OK. Some of their workmen are good and some are terrible -- you're pretty much at their mercy for the first visit. But on the most recent project I contracted for with them, I was subject to what I can only consider a bait-and-switch. When a project had to be redone because the materials (from a major manufacturer) were defective and had to be replaced, they charged me almost twice as much for the re-do. The claim was that they had undercharged me the first time! By the time this happened, my sunk costs were so considerable that I just had to go ahead with it. Estimates I have gotten from them for two further projects (just for the sake of curiosity) were way out of line with other options. I will not be using them in the future. read more

I scheduled Fix It People to move and install some light fixtures in my home. I am very, very happy with the work and with Fix It People. Tom, the estimator was fast and thorough. The workers who came to install my light arrived right on time. They were efficient and knowledgeable and they worked quickly. They left my home spotless, too. I especially liked that the lead installer took the time to mentor the other installer on some of the tricks of the trade. He was encouraging and patient with teaching and truly cared about his co-worker gaining new skills. The quote was right on line with the final costs, too. We reached out to this company as we had a hole in our ceiling due to a leak that occurred and needed a handyman to fix a loose faucet and sink handle in our bathrooms, as well as a towel rack. The initial contact and consultation via FaceTime went well. However, this simple job turned into a nightmare. The company sent an email indicating that their start time would be between 8AM-10AM for 2 days. On the first day, the technician texted us and said he would be late and arrive at 9AM as he had to pick things up from Home Depot. We found this text strange as why would he not be ready to start the job prior to arriving? On the second day, we asked the technician to arrive at 10AM, he said his management would have to approve it. We called the project manager back based on the text he sent us indicating to call him and we did not receive a response. Additionally, the voicemail was for another employee not the name of the individual who called us? The technician arrived an hour earlier and said his management told him to start at 9AM? Terrible miscommunication with their clients and internally. Not a good sign if they are unable to communicate internally! The work the technician executed was terrible (e.g., he fixed the loose sink faucet and somehow made the handle crooked, fixed the loose towel rack, but it was crooked). Moreover, the fix he did for the hole in the wall was terrible. After the drywall was replaced and he started painting, he left paint spots on our wood floors, painted half the ceiling (we can see where he left off and where the old paint started), and left the job without waiting for the paint to dry to put back the electrical face plates, as well as push back the can lights on the ceiling. While the company tried to make things right for us by sending a field technician to the house, all they could say was they would not charge us for this new individuals time to check on the issues we raised. Seriously! Unacceptable customer service. We will not use this company again! Moreover, the project manager they assigned texted me and said he was new and was, "...still getting my bearings." Finally, the last piece to this nightmare is the company sent us the invoice, which reflects a $30/hr fee for the technician to runout (charged 1 hr) and pick up paint? WTH!! Are we paying for consulting fees or just to drive to Home Depot, which is not far from our home. read more

We did not have a good experience with Fix It People with weatherizing the doors for our front entrance. The initial quality of the weather stripping was very poor (see photos). The technician who came back to fix the job offered a different solution. I asked him if there would be a cost impact, and he said there would not be--giving us no indication to expect a price increase. The final bill was more than $100 higher than quoted. What prompted me to write this review is their constant emails sent to me about their "promotions" and "expansion" to the suburbs BUT YET, cannot seem to respond to my simple request. (By the way, I think it's great they are doing well, successful and are expanding.) My experience: 1) I contacted them for a FaceTime consult few months ago. A time was set up but I had to cancel (which I take full responsibility). Then I rebooked it at another time/day. Well, that fell through because of a "misunderstanding." Okay, whatever...I moved on. 2) During the holidays, I kept receiving their email marketing blasts. So I decided to give it another go. I contacted them again, agreeing to a FaceTime consultation. But then, I received a text t some hours later after I booked an appointment, asking if I could send photos of items that I needed repaired (a simple torn 5 inch door trim). I sent them the photos and was told they would get back to me in a day or two with a quote. Several days passed, so I sent them an email inquiring whether they could do the job or not. I was told someone would get back to me in a day or so. Radio silence. At the time of this writing, it's been almost two weeks. And still getting their email blasts, indicating their availability.
