I went to Gibraltar Transmissions to get a second opinion after not feeling confident elsewhere. Phil was patient, kind, and respectful in our dealings. He explained everything that needed to be done to my car (a rebuild of the entire transmission), the reasons why, and even took me around the workshop to show me examples of the different parts he was discussing. We discussed a price range and estimated date of completion. Not only did he charge me the LOWEST PRICE in that range, but MY CAR WAS READY 3 DAYS EARLY!! He also has an agreement with the Enterprise car rental down the block and was able to secure me a ridiculous deal on a rental. I had tons of luggage and boxes in my car, and his team helped me transfer everything over to my rental before I left. Everyone there was friendly and went above and beyond. I could not be happier with the service they provided and the way I was treated. I've already recommended Gibraltar Transmissions to several of my co-workers, and despite the fact that I don't live on Staten Island, I will be returning to Phil and his team at Gibraltar Transmissions in the future, whenever need their services again.

Any business who thinks that I owe it to them to spend 3x more money to give them my business for a job that I can do myself, does not get my business anymore. I was seriously taken aback by the attitude of the owner to act like I did something wrong by doing my own car repairs. Replacing a battery is not a difficult repair. And I don't care if you think that the quality of the battery that I got somewhere else is crap. I brought the car there to try to find out why the battery kept dying. Even if the new battery I put in was crap, the previous battery was the one that he had put in a few years before and I had the same problem with that one for years and he knew that. There's something going on with my car that causes it to drain the battery if you don't drive it at least every few days. Anyway, I really don't appreciate being yelled at by any business for any reason. Maybe I could understand that if I was rude to you but not because I didn't hire you for another job that you think I should have. That's just totally out of line. I had mostly good experiences before. But they weren't so good that I could forgive this.

Avoid - Payless Auto Repair Center (Staten Island) My…read more70-year-old mother brought her car here for what appeared to be a simple muffler bracket issue that was causing noise. The shop told her the entire muffler system had to be replaced and instructed her to pay cash, charging her $580. After the "repair," the car was worse than before. Strong exhaust fumes were entering the cabin, making her light-headed, and the check engine light came on, which had never happened prior to their work. When I returned with her to address the issue, the mechanic never used any diagnostic equipment but immediately blamed an O2 sensor. He also told my mother he did not charge sales tax, yet the paperwork clearly shows tax was included. This experience was deceptive, fraudulent, and like a complete rip-off, especially toward an elderly customer. Instead of fixing the problem, the shop charged a large amount of cash and left the vehicle in a dangerous condition which it did not arrive in.
