Rich is still hiding and not communicating. On June 25, 2025, I hand delivered a demand letter, but he was hiding. I then filed small claims and mailed the notice via first class registered mail, however he twice refused the certified mail return receipt letter. The sheriff made two attempts to serve notice, however they claim he wasn't there or was hiding to avoid being served. He has now had the car for 19-months. One of last times we spoke, he said that he would keep trying once he pulls his head out of his ass -- it's obvious that hasn't happened. What a pathetic coward! read more

These dudes saved my ass. Drove up from San Francisco last weekend in a '70 Bus that should not have made it. Starter died about 50 miles out of the city, muffler had a huge hole, there were practically no points and the distributor cap was on backwards, and oil was spit up the backside. First day, $40, installed starter, replaced points. Came back the next day for the muffler, $300 for the install -but they threw in all kinds of other work, like pressure washing the engine compartment, new hoses, adjusted timing, refilled oil, and bled the brakes a bit. I left Portland feeling like I was driving a different Bus. These dudes are not just great mechanics, they are great humans. No bullshit, accurate estimates, and their work will far surpass expectations. I'm making the 1500 mile round trip whenever i need any work done. It's worth the piece of mind. read more

I take my 01 VW TDI here. I found him on a tdi forum & has been the best decision I could've made. I've had a timing belt replaced, battery, etc. He's rerouted the vacuum hoses in my car free of charge cause the goon who replaced my transmission in Northern California didn't know what he was doing. I can't take my car anywhere else. He understands my car & is fair with what I need vs don't need. As long as I have a VW it's definitely going to Rich. read more

My only regret about my dealing with FixUm Haus was that I didn't find them sooner. Our beloved VW TDI Beetle suddenly started shifting hard... EVERYTHING I read online said CLUTCH... We started at Top Performance in Vancouver because a friend works there. They said the problem was a Hydraulic Issue... after directing us to replace Slave and Master Cylinder ($800 later) the problem persists... so they got $800 out of my bank account, and I still have a broken car. I decided to take it the Dealer for a more trustworthy diagnostic... again fearing a $2500 clutch job.... Nope... Shift linkage they say.... so $450 and some new shift linkage later... and now a week invested in this problem... shifting issues persist.... So I'm $1200 and 2 weeks invested in repairs... and we still don't know what the problem is... it is apparently not a big deal that these two shops used my bank account to diagnose the car... So... in my google searching I come across the TDI forum... and start looking into the local recommended "TDI Guru's" Fixum Haus was on the list... so I gave them a call... My first impression of the owner was he was a bit gruff... and kind of didn't really have time to deal with my many questions... after a couple of calls and a few weeks for us to recover from the previous expense and to put the money together for what I was sure would be an expensive repair... he finally convinced me to bring the car so he could "meet the car and its owner"... When we arrived... we realized why... his shop is small... but surrounded by Volkswagens that were needing service... apparently anyone who knows Volkswagens' knows.. this is the guy... They were parked two deep when we arrived. I was a bit nervous... what if the reviews are correct and he will have our car for longer than anticipated... we needed it fixed ASAP... we can't really be without our car for an extended time. In person... Rich took the time to listen to our woes, and get to know us, and the car... he understood immediately that we'd been screwed over and our trust was damaged... he immediately set out to show us what a real relationship with a mechanic should be. He took a look at the car and immediately said Clutch.. and was pretty disgusted that the previous shops had even suggested anything else... he immediately put together a plan of action and told us the car would be ready within a day... Rich is not your typical kind of shop owner... he strikes me as being the kind of guy that a verbal agreement and a handshake still means something. He didn't put anything in writing... just said.. this is what your prices will be.... I will let you know when it is done..... So we trusted him with our car... and hoped for the best.... how much worse could our problems get?? Right?? Rich called later that evening to let me know.. the car was done.. and running great, but as late as it was, invited me to come and pick it up in the morning. The next day... I went to get it.. and we had some conversations about the repair, which was pretty straightforward, and went as expected. We also talked about what we should do with the car next... he put together a plan of action for us.. and gave us some approximate prices... The thing I've come to realize.... there are "mechanics" and then there are guys like Rich who know their trade... He's been a Volkswagen Mechanic for 30 years, and he's also a VW buff... he knows these cars... their quirks, their mannerisms.. and what you can and cannot get away with... Sure... his methods are not going to be what you're used to... and his customer skills are a bit rough... but in the end.. he does what he says he will do.. at a price that is more than fair... with no bull... He will treat you fairly, and he will take care of your car... in the end... that's what you're looking for right? If I had only went to him before I tried the other "mechanics"... I would be $1200 richer.... or more.... I have two TDI Beetles... and I was in need of a good.. trustworthy VW mechanic... I think I have found him.... read more

Don't trust these fake positive reviews from Rich's friends. Brought my car in for a new timing belt. He kept my car for a week without telling me how long the repair would take. Told me my rear brake pads needed replaced as they where almost metal on metal. Got a second opinion and sure enough, my brake pads are all perfect. Liars and cheats. Now I'm having cooling fan issues I never had before. Because he lied about the brake pads, it's now clear they caused more damage to get me to come back. If you trust this guy you deserve to be ripped off because that's how he thinks. "Trust me and I'll screw you over". read more

I brought in my 2003 beetle that was overheating. I happened to initially stop by when they were closed, but Joe came out to take a peek anyway. He assured me that they could take a look, and told me when to come back. I came back, met Rich (he's the best!), dropped her off, and they fixed her right up. Rich kept me in informed every step of the way about what she needed to be road-ready again, and went above and beyond in answering all my questions along the way. Rich is a legend and such a kind/positive person, to boot. He is passionate about his work and provides such a positive experience for customers. (We even exchanged beetle owner stories!) Fix Em Haus recently replaced the dual mass fly wheel (DMF) on my 2006 Jetta TDI (auto transmission). Big pain to remove all the necessary components to access the transmission and replace the flywheel. Their price was about 1/3 of what the dealer offered, and 1/2 what a competing VW shop in SE Portland asked. Scheduled an appointment, dropped the car off, and they had it ready to go by the end of the day. Have also had them do transmission fluid service on this car, and they did my initial used vehicle inspection before I bought it 80k miles ago. Nothing but good things to say about them. It is a small shop, and they are known to be some of the best german car mechanics in the region, so they get busy. Good people! read more

I brought my '03 VW TDI in to Fix-um Haus for a coolant leak, and turbo issue. There was no question in their minds how to address my situations. They were able to diagnose and repair the coolant leak and replace associated hardware. They put the turbo through an extensive checklist to determine its serviceability, and made appropriate recommendations for me to consider. I am incredibly impressed with the collective knowledge of their TDI specialists, and will be bringing my TDI wagon back to them to tune in the turbo unit. Professional, courteous, and well versed. I love these guys. I worked mainly with Rich but everyone was really nice and friendly. I had just driven my car up to Oregon from Southern California and it was acting funny. Rich was no BS. Told me he would make it as cheap as possible and was calling me before every descision to make sure I was getting what I wanted. Ended up having to get a good amount of work done but he easily saved me $500 by talking down his supplier. Really love this place and they will do what they can and point you in the right direction with things that they can't do. Honest, hard working, and they know everyone by name. Heard great things and so back in Sep. took my '71 VW in to have the fuel pump replaced. Wish he'd just told me then he didn't want the work. After the car had sat on his lot untouched for four months he assured me another VW shop both had the part and wanted the work and was it OK for him to tow it over there. Turns out this "ready to work" shop was given my car, my key, & my phone number but nothing else. Not only did they not have the part, they didn't want the work either. I STRONGLY suggest against taking your classic to Fix Um Haus as they clearly don't care to work on older cars. Given they lying, I'd suggest against taking ANY car here. read more

My car was at another mechanic who seemed unable to figure out what was wrong with my Beetle. I called these guys to see if they had any availability. He took my car in the next day (but even offered to look at it the same day), fixed all my problems, and only charged me for minimal labor! He gave me an honest opinion and fair quote for new breaks and explained to me why mine were making noise and the pro and cons for new ones along with prices, and his recommendation. It can be difficult to find a repair shop that takes the time to level with you if you are a lady. Both the men I encountered here were direct, informative, and efficient. I had to have my starter replaced in my 2002 Passat. At first he could find the part locally, but then had to order it from Pennsylvania, which then took longer than he expected. Still, he called and informed me of progress each step of the way, and when the part did come (I think I waited all of two or three days because it was over a weekend), they had it repaired that same day. I also appreciated that they didn't try to push any other services on me; as a student, having to repair the starter was costly enough. I hope I don't have to go back anytime soon, but if anything happens, I know I will take it here! read more

They charged me $300 to tell me a week later they could not help me and didn't know what was wrong. No one could figure out the problem. These guys have always been above and beyond my expectations for the auto repair experience. I stopped by for advice, stopped in for maintenance and repairs, and even gotten my hands dirty with them while getting my van worked on. I have never experienced a shop that helps you get back on the road and lays it on the table with complete honesty in layman's terminology.
