Man, these guys don't cease to amaze me. I've coming to Expert for over two years now after a battering by other less than reputable mechanic shops in the city. Went in today to have my alternator replaced w/out appointment and it was THEM, Steve to be precise, that looked it up and reminded me that it was still under warranty and if there was an issue they'd fix it no worries. Steve called me back in two hours and told me job was done. I opted to add an alignment to the deal since my van was already at the shop and in good hands. This is the only place in town I'll ever bring my vehicle again. The work is solid, timely and they will shoot you straight every time. I don't live in the neighborhood anymore but after dealing with other shops and their practices over the last year, I will be making the drive to Expert. The customer service is outstanding as well. If only I could give 800 stars. I first found Expert Auto in 2001 I think... Not only do they provide exceptional service - they are KIND and helpful and genuine. One time - in 2010 my car broke down in down town Portland. I called Expert Auto and Travis drove over to see if he could get the car moving. While we were in traffic, with Travis under the hood - a guy pulled up beside me and rudely yelled "Hey Lady - this is not a good place to park!" ..to which Travis popped his head under the hood and said "she didnt park, she broke down. Im her mechanic and you are not helping. Move along" LOL. I loved that he remained professional, helped me out of a shaming situation and although he wasnt able to troubleshoot the car, waited with me until the tow came. Travis is not the exception at Expert Auto - they have a work culture like that. Steve, Mike and the others are amazing. Every car I have been able to take to them, I have. They now service my sons car also. I literally trust them with the most important people in my life. read more

No no. Run! No service; no quality, no value!!!. Progressive chose this & zero got done. On my 1st call in Steve says I'm gonna need $200 upfront for things progressive won't pay for . I said no sorry, I'm doing only what the insurance covers. Progressive also DOES NOT pay claims. Avoid them if u ever expect to submit a claim. Update: oh my! Run away fast! The guy Steve came over shook my hand then sent attack dog mike over to me. He has white hair that sticks straight up. He cornered me in their tiny office , blocking me leaving & demanded I give him $80 a day vehicle storage for 7 + days . He gives the impression he's the top pimp . He got right up in my face demanding I give them $800 for my vehicle being there even with no repair or anything done! I yelled right back I'm not paying for any of this. My insurance never notified me of any such thing. It's My insurance who chose you , not me! They ordered me to take my vehicle here or it would not be here! After continuing attacking me , it was evident he stopped to reason that I wasn't one of his hookers and that he couldn't just slap me around , he then backed off & went away. I exited immediately. We were considering buying a 20-year-old used car off Facebook Marketplace and did a pre-purchase inspection at Expert Auto Repair to check for any issues. We are not knowledgeable about cars at all, but the employees, especially Curtis, explained everything and made us feel comfortable. The inspection took about two hours and Expert Auto Repair called us (the buyers) first and told us the full list of maintenance and performance issues before contacting the seller. When we arrived back to the shop, he answered all our questions and gave ballpark estimates for repair costs. (This was before the seller returned; he staggered the calls so that we could talk to him privately. ) Curtis was there to help us, since the inspection was for our benefit and was very truthful about the condition of the car. We asked him to highlight the main issues to the seller, since we couldn't explain it ourselves, but he was there to help us first and foremost. Buying a used car is a risky and stressful endeavor and we appreciate the help we got at Expert Auto Repair! read more

They were very accommodating and kind, and the repair was done quickly. They didn't try to upsell me, just did what I needed and asked for.

I have been in twice now, and have been happy both times. Pricing seems to be fair, and in line with the local market. Today I had a quote from the Toyota dealer for some work that was recommended on my Prius, and Expert Auto was able to do the work for about 20% less. Their estimator, Steve, is a good communicator. He always gives me a call with a status update on the car, and answers any questions. I haven't been quite as impressed with the other folks I have interacted with (e.g. when picking my car up or whatever). I'm going to continue giving these guys business with some larger work in the future, as well as maybe move my regular oil change on one of my cars to them. I'll post back here with an upgrade to a 5-star, or a lowering rating, based on continued history over time. read more

Brought my van back in because I knew she needed some work done, the engine was sounding really load and rough, the engine would die when I was in reverse and a handful of other items. My van is now 24 years old and certainly was due for some work, especially before heading off to Burning Man. They had an appointment available for me just a few days after I called, had called me with an estimate just a few hours after I dropped the van off and while it was pricey there was a bunch of work to be done and nothing was surprising, so the price did not seem out of line. They also noticed the head light that was out, which I forgot to mention and offered to fix my flat tire (one had a slow leak, I had the spare on and the flat in the van, planning on going to Les Schawb to deal with it after). They fixed the flat and replaced the tire and properly stowed away the spare. I also asked them to replace front passenger door handle, which has been missing the entire time I have owned the van. They couldn't find an actual replacement handle, but asked if I would be ok with a substitute handle made from a leather strap provided by the furniture upholstery place down the street. Considering that I am amazed so much of this van is original or matching, I sure didn't care. The replacement handle is made of a nice sturdy piece of dark blue leather that still nicely matches my van interior, if not the other handles (dark grey plastic with faux wood insets). I almost wish I had all the handles swapped out to leather, instead of just replacing the missing one. They have a very fast turn around time, my van was ready late in the afternoon the day after I dropped it off. I picked it up the next day since I wouldn't be able to get they before they closed and it was no problem. read more

I attempted to change out my PVC valve because it was about time to do so and after watching tons of YouTube videos, it seemed like the easiest thing in the world to do. Well, everything was easy until the darn thing broke off and part of it got stuck in my engine, leaving my car unable to drive! I called Steve and his team and they were luckily able to get me in the next day and have it fixed within a few hours. I brought the new pvc valve since I already had it and they were able to switch them out with a little elbow grease! Everyone was super friendly and I'm super thankful for the speedy service. About a year ago the lights on my car went out. They "fixed them" so about three months later my thermostat went out. Because of my,good experience I went back to get it fixed. However since then and less than six months since each "fix" THE SAME THINGS BROKE. I took my,car to a different mechanic and they told me that the wrong parts had actually been put in. So I basically,had to pay twice for one problem. Will never recommend to anyone nor will I go back. I called them and got voicemail to explain this and never got a return call. Waste. read more

This place is the real deal. I am not at all mechanically inclined, but do have a basic understanding of preventative maintenance and the like. I have been here 4 times and they've always treated me respectfully, professionally, and honestly. Really nice guys as well. Emphasis on the honest characteristic: I took my car in for what I was expecting to be new brake pads and rotars, maybe even new struts (Les Schwab indicated it was about time). I was bracing myself for the between $400-$800 in repairs. I dropped the car off, receive a phone call a few hours later reporting that I still had enough pad to last a few more years, no intervention indicated. Wow that is very much appreciated, as I can certainly recall mechanics in my past performing unnecessary repairs for the extra buck. I also like that I can swing by to have a light repaired, and they don't treat me like I'm an idiot who should be doing this myself. TO TOP IF OFF: 30 days after my preventative maintenance "attempt," I get a phone call from someone just checking-in to see how the car is running. Lifelong customer. Highly recommended! read more

I went to Expert Auto Repair to make an appointment tomorrow to get a headlamp replaced in my Subaru Crosstrek. They replaced it right then and there! I was out of there in about 10 minutes! They charged me 1/2 the price than a dealership would have. Curtis, Steve and Bruce sound like they are very knowledgeable auto technicians. I asked Bruce about their other prices (oil change, brakes, etc.) The prices sounded very reasonable. They are a locally owned business and I like to keep my money in the local economy. I've been bringing my car here for the past few years based on their excellent ratings and previously good service. However, my most recent experience has made me feel taken advantage of and I cannot endorse their company, nor will I ever bring my car back. I brought my car in because it was intermittently not starting. They had my car for 2 days and stated they could not duplicate the problem. After taking it through an extensive electrical test, they said the positive terminal on my battery connector was bad and that I needed new spark plugs. When I asked them if they had done my spark plugs recently, since I believe they had a couple years ago, they said no, that I was scheduled to get them done at 75000 miles, but I've never gotten them done. I told them that if the spark plugs were bad then to go ahead and to replace them. After getting my car back and rummaging through the receipts I keep in the glove box, I discovered that they had indeed replaced my spark plugs 20,000 miles ago, so there was no way they needed to be done again unless they weren't done in the first place (even though I've now paid for it twice). Additionally, my car did not start the other night after getting off work and I was stuck in an empty parking lot with a dead car at 11pm. Clearly something was missed during their expensive and "extensive" electrical test. It saddens me to write this review, but I paid over $300 when I took my car there and it is evident that it was not repaired and I was scammed. Very disappointing. read more

We were the first customer there (before 8am); they had no one else there, and they were so bent out of shape about someone trying to give them business. Even though the check engine light wasn't on, they wanted $100 to run a diagnostic scan. Unbelievable. The guy who looks like Guy Fieri has a real attitude. Never going back there. These guys are the best. I had taken my 2004 Highlander to the dealership (Broadway Toyota) for a right wheel bearing replacement. The dealership told me it could replace the bearing for over $600. AND I needed new brakes--over $900. AND, I would need to totally replace my transfer case (whatever that is) for $1834 for a grand total of $3394!!!! So, I took it into Expert Auto Repair and guess what? My transfer case was fine! And they were able to replace my bearing and brakes for a little over $600. Now, you might be thinking that these guys are cheap and do cheap work. Wrong. They were professional, the work was done right...the first time. Very personable. Clean shop. This is the best auto repair I've ever dealt with! They're honest, courteous, helpful, and they run on schedule. I've got an old car, but well maintained. It started having trouble, I went to two other places both gave me a long list of things I "needed" to get done--but not the same things---both estimates were close to $3000 worth of work. A friend told me to take my care to Expert Auto, saying I could get a straight forward assessment of what was wrong and a fair price to fix it. Turned out it was one thing, they fixed it for $86. I've been going back ever since. I especially like how intuitive their mechanics are. The kind of intuition that comes from long experience. I've had cars where another repair place was going to charge a bunch of money to do a full and compete head to toe assessment to figure out what was wrong. These guys start off with informed guesses about one or two things that are the likely culprits, and so far their best guess has been right from the get go. It is such a relief to find a mechanic where if they say something is wrong I know I can believe them, and if they say it will cost x amount of money I can have confidence that that's fair to both of us. read more

This is a Yelp success story. I was worried about going to a non-dealership mechanic, since I've taken my '06 Honda to Beaverton Honda for about four years. But a month ago, they demanded $695 from me to replace the rotors and put on new brake pads. So I decided to shop around. The guys at Expert Auto Repair were horrified at the dealership price. They did it for $270. I'm willing to post the estimates if anyone wants to see them. Side benefits: They're right near the streetcar so you can drop off your vehicle and get into downtown while you wait. I don't really ever review places on here, but use them if you can. read more

Great Guys and an Honest shop. Ed who works on my Dodge Ram diesel was not going to be in for a couple days and my truck was dead in my driveway. He said to come on by the shop (in my other vehicle) and he would try to get me some info to help troubleshoot the problem. When I got there he had printed up some instructions on how to check the ........blah blah blah. Anyway he had it printed, had a diesel fuel can for me to borrow and I solved the problem utilizing his advice and support. I work graveyard shift, into the weekend. Very few auto repair places appear to be open Saturday, and none on Sunday. I found Expert via Yelp, they had good reviews, and took online bookings. Being optimistic, I booked an 8am Saturday late on Friday night using the online system, and rather than waiting for a confirmation email or call, just stopped in at 7:56. The gentleman at the counter (so sorry I didn't get a name!) said they had a busy day, but if I could wait an hour... I said sure, and literally 15 minutes later, I was back on the road, good as new. No sooner had I sat down than he went and pulled my car in, the mechanic checked it, found a rattling metal shielding piece around the driveshaft, showed it to me, said he'd re-secure it, and did so. Five minutes later, after a nice chat about my Iowa plates and hometown, the guy in the office said I was good to go. No charge! And keep in mind - this is as a walk-in, brand-new customer. I was most impressed, and since my car is pretty old, and high mileage, I'll for sure be returning here next time I need some kind of service. I'd recommend you do the same. read more
