They inspected my car and I paid almost $200, and have been waiting over 3 days for the write up and quotes despite them saying they'd have it to me the day of, and when I called back the day after he said he'd get it to me in "just a moment," day 3 and they aren't even answering calls or texts during business hours. Awful experience; it all started when I asked a friend who previously worked at a Volvo shop to replace the suspension on my XC70: all new shocks, coils, hardware, etc. He installed it but the front end had a bad clunking noise on both driver and passenger side. I took it to Voltec to get it checked out, and get rid of the clunking noise, which I very specifically asked for. They said they'd look and let me know what they find and how much it will cost in parts and labor. I had a hard time getting a hold of them, but when I did, they said a bolt was incorrectly installed, and some mounting bolts were missing, and noticed the oil plug was stripped and siezed. Parts, labor, and alignment $605. When they finished, Martin called and said I could pick it up, and I specifically asked him if the clunking was gone, and he said yes. But when I picked it up, Elliott, the tech, said there was still a quiet clunk on the drivers side. I thought I'd at least drive it and see, for myself, and to my disappointment, both sides were clunking loudly. This was quite frustrating as it meant I'd have to get it fixed again, and aligned again, so I paid $120 alignment for nothing; all because they were not communicating on their end, and actually misled me. I gave it back to them, and Martin said they'd go deeper to find the problem. He said he'd call the next day to let me know. He did not call and no one picked up the whole day. When I got a hold of them the next day, I was told that there was a bad control arm, and the driver side strut was not properly assembled. Martin explained the parts I'd need and the cost of labor, and I gave them the green light. Another $352. When I got my car back, there was no more noise, but as the day went on, it developed a weird issue: when I accelerate, the wheel yanked right, but the car went left, and when I decelerated suddenly, it would do the opposite. At highway speeds, it was very dangerous and I had a hard time controlling the car. It was the weekend though, so all I could do was wait until Monday to call Voltec. However on Sunday, I needed to make a short 10min hop to work, and while driving the passenger side felt like it collapsed and the tires began grinding against the wheel well plastic. When I looked underneath, THE BOLT TO THE CONTROL ARM WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY OUT. I went to Voltec the next day, and I described my problem. I asked if they had removed and looked at the passenger control arm, Martin said no. Then I showed him the photo. Everyone got quiet and tense. They said they'd send someone right away to fix it. Two guys came out and it seemed like they got the bolt in, but they needed to take it back to the shop. The next day, I got my car back...and now the driver side was clunking again. I almost turned around but I decided they weren't worth my time. After all that, they left me with a broken car. I have no problem if they couldn't find the problem and needed more time and money. But they never said this; instead they misled me the first time and screwed up big time the second time. All I wanted was to get rid of the noise, and if that means trying different things, and paying more for parts and labor, that's fine with me. But no one said anything. I was given a screwed up car 3 times, and no one said 'hold on, we still haven't found the problem, we need to look at other options and possibilities.' They just gave back shoddy work and said 'good to go!' I would've never posted this review, but for a company that is exclusively recommend by IPD and charges $160/hour, I cannot believe how unprofessional they are. I'm not saying the $960 wasn't worth it, but they never fixed the issue I was having and didn't dig deeper; just kept giving back a broken car with zero clarity or communication. read more

I do not recommend going here. They completely ripped me off. They charged much more for what the parts actually cost by like $200, and when I asked them why there's such a big price difference between the parts from a reputable source online versus what they're charging, they didn't answer the question, got defensive, told me I could look somewhere else (when my car was already there) and hung up. I said I might see what prices are like other places and they said they would change the diagnosis fee from $80 to $160. They also still charged the diagnosis fee after I decided to get the work done with them and charged $368 dollars for less than 2 hours of labor. So just a warning that they might rip you off. Now I need more work done on my car and will not be going back here because it was such a bad experience! read more

I recently acquired an older Volvo and was recommended Vol-Tech as a reliable place to have the automobile inspected. I had to make an appointment two weeks in advance, which was not an issue for a non-daily driver vehicle. I brought the car in as directed first thing in the morning. The car sat there all day and was ultimately inspected by a tech at the end of the day. I saw that as a good sign of a busy shop. Although, when I picked up the car the following day, the tech was gone to review the inspection and said to call the following week. I still paid for the labor/inspection. I called the following Tuesday and left a message. No response. I called each week for the past three weeks and no return message. They did provide me with a list of items to fix. Although, I wish they merely would have been up front that they didn't have the time to help out and review the inspection and the notes they'd made. Or had the courtesy to call me back. I'll try someone else. read more

Solid group of guys who know Volvos. First brought my beloved 240 in years ago after I smashed the underside of my car on a curb. They fixed her within the hour and I never forgot their friendly service. Fast forward to this past week when I reluctantly brought my car in. My car is a complete mess and I've been burned in the past by other Volvo shops so I tend to let a lot of "little things" go with out repair. Sadly, the little thing that happened this week is the head light went out. Of course it's a safety concern so I set out to find a *sigh* auto repair shop.... After a lot of searching, I stumbled upon Vol-tech. Sam sorted my car right out in less than 10 mins, no appointment and no waiting. He looked through some of the small complaints I had and helped give me a good idea of what type of work could help my beater wagon run better. With a quick look at the fuses and tightening a bolt or 2, he helped make my heat work again and my car runs smoother with out frequent stalls! This is stuff that has kept me worried for months, things I thought would cost me hundreds to diagnose and fix were small fixes that made a big difference! I'm really blown away by the way I was treated with respect and politeness. Let's face it, I'm a girl who knows nothing about cars and I feel that people have taken that to their advantage in the past. I'm really glad that I found a place with knowledgeable staff that I can trust to go above and beyond to get my car in shape. I've been taking my high-mileage 2008 Volvo S60 to Sam, Lee, and the guys at Voltech for about 3 years. I'm completely impressed with their service. They know their stuff inside and out, not to mention that they love my car as much as I do. So, why let anyone else touch it?! Prices are reasonable for the quality of service and the expertise you're getting. I recommend them for major work (knock on wood I haven't needed that yet), moderate work (brakes/rotors, batteries, etc), right on down to general maintenance like oil changes. I stopped going to Vol-Tech after a mechanic (who I'd been working with respectfully for 5+ years) propositioned me (at the shop) to MODEL UNDERWEAR for his wife. He was well aware of what I did for a living, which was NOT modeling or "industry" work (keeping this PG so it can't be flagged). Gross, sexist, (homophobic*) and extremely unprofessional. I was both too shocked and afraid of retaliation to speak with Rob the owner/manager at the time. If you're reading this, Mechanic Sam, (or Sam's wife or boss) please know that "recruiting" at your place of work is completely inappropriate and NO DIFFERENT than saying directly to a customer: "I'd like to see you naked". Go be sleazy to strangers at a swingers night (where someone can react appropriately) or NOT AT ALL. I now take my business elsewhere and feel sick to my stomach about all the positive recommendations I gave before. *After years of sharing the car repair responsibilities (drop-offs, payments, etc) it was very obvious I was in a long-term relationship. With another woman-identified person. Which I have no doubt fueled Sam's misogynistic fantasy that I might be "into" his "offer". It makes me sad to see people post "finally a place I can trust, etc", which is what I remember telling my dad, who has fixed our family's Volvos for 25+ years. I wish I had somewhere else to recommend, but the expensive (Swede One), sketchy (Rich's) and sleazy Volvo mechanics of this town are the reason I got a Subaru after only owning Volvos since I was 18! read more

They're great. Lee's great. John's a little weird, but that's because he lives on a boat on the Columbia and has too much time on his hands. He happily admits to this as he shows you a video he made on his blackberry he voiced about extinct dinosaurs. This frames the mood of the joint. So my beater/hauler is an 04 XC90. I picked it up secondhand in California and drove it up north. It has a few issues like all good beaters do. The guys at Voltech are always *always* real diligent about scoping it out and giving me a fair deal. They'll stay late to get something done on time. The caveat is that with their ultra fairness and consumer advocacy, they go overboard and can talk you out of service. Don't let them! Be a good boy/girl scour, be prepared, and give them your money to fix things before they break. Trust me, that attitude is directly in line with their ethos. Heh, when this happens, I usually have to negotiate to have them go through my car again, but when I do, they are happily obliging and do a great job. Whenever anything messes up with a service it's good to know I can bring it back and not get jacked, not get dicked around, and not have to resort to petty criminalhood to pay for dealership quality (and usually better!) work. Lee's talked down a good price on brakes for me, various sensors and repairs, general maintenance. Oh, and ask if you can see their rally Volvo in back. They get excited. And actually, something that sets Voltech apart, is that on some Saturdays, you'll find their mechanics working on souping up their OWN Volvos. Most dealership mechanics don't see a Volvo outside of work. At Voltech, they actually CARE about Volvos. read more

Been going to Rob for almost 20 years on and off. Nobody's better in Portland with Volvos, and I mean nobody, he's the guru. Brought in a 122 for lower A-arm bushings. Parts cost: about 30 bucks. Labor cost: $600. Asked the front counter guy why this routine job took almost an entire day's worth of labor? He said that's just what it takes. Rob was out of town so I didn't have him to talk to about it but my guess is that he would have called bullshit on it just like I did. Paid the bill and walked out, never to return. I had a shade-tree mechanic friend do the job on another 122 last year and it took him 2 hours, working in a driveway! Thought I'd give Vol-Tech the job this time to stay in touch and keep the relationship going. Too bad that's where the relationship ended. read more

Vol-tech rules so hard!! I started taking my '94 turbo station wagon in there when I moved to Portland because it was the closest shop to my house. Turns out it's also the best! Every time I take my baby in, they go far beyond the call of duty. They never pressure me into extra goodies and always work with my financial situation by finding used parts or teaching me how to do stuff. They're honest, hard working guys, and if you treat them with respect, you'll get it in return. This last time, I took it in for a fuel pump and they fixed my sagging bumper without even mentioning it! I was leaving town for two weeks, so I dropped off my car "ah, this will be plenty of time." Had a laundry list of minor things to fix up, and asked for a general inspection. Guy on the phone says "we usually don't have them hang around that long," and was hesitant to have it there for that long. Ya, okay pal: Anyway, I get back, and nothing has been done. So another week goes by and I go to pick up my car. It's sitting on the lot ripped apart, splash guard in the trunk, seat heater switches out, etc., whatever -- not ready. They ended up replacing the brake cables and doing a throttle body job, and sure those seem to have been executed well. Oh also, the bill came to ~2x what was quoted, after that. So the guy knocked off 25% of that, considering I lost my shit in the office, but anyway, bill was still notably over quote. I've had two Volvo 240s in Portland over the last six years, and have been in and out of lots of shops in Portland. I want to like Vol Tech, cause it's large, real close, and when you go there, you see a lot of Turbobrick / iPd / enthusiast inspired culture in the decor and the cars on the lot -- But honestly, you don't have to fuck with these guys. Just go to Bart down on MLK. If he's busy, he'll send you to Alamo Automotive, out east, which is also a great option in that neighborhood. If you live further south, go to MVP Volvo, I've had good luck there, too. Maybe this was a one time thing? Who knows. But there's no reason for me to bother finding out by trying again. read more

If you have anything other than a Subaru Justy, they are the folk to go to. They are fair and will tell you straight up if what is up with your car... And if it isn't worth repairing (as was the case with my 85 Volvo 240 DL). When the transmission on my automatic 91 Subaru Justy went, they didn't know what to do with it (in their words.) So it sat for a week before they let me know, which was not so awesome. But I eventually got it towed to a mechanic who had specific experience with Justys. Past that, these guys are rad, accessible, and good with the communication. Check them out! read more

First time I went into Vol Tech for service I got a big piece of salmon Rob had just fished out from some body of water somewhere. Haven't gotten any salmon lately but I've been going to them for years now and am still loyal even though I live right across the street from another volvo service place. Sometimes they are a little too busy but the new location has helped that somewhat. There are quicker places to go if you just need an oil change or something. But If you are doing any sort of high-performance work or need a pre-purchase this is the ONLY place you want to go! equally if you have an older model and things are just going haywire they know what's up and hook you up or advise you to maybe find a used part yourself and they'll install it to save you a bit of cash. I own what is quite-possibly the most beat-up 240 in Portland. I first took it to VolTech after tragically smashing my tailpipe on a curb, because they are located a few blocks from my house. They assured me that tailpipe smashing is a common occurrence and quickly fixed me up with a used one at a reasonable price. Second trip in was for something equally stupid. Next day I picked up my car, with both repairs made incredibly affordably, and with bonus bumper fixing to boot! The mechanics at VolTech are incredibly nice. Incredibly funny. And incredibly good at their jobs. Best of all, they are respectful. They know I don't know a lot about cars, but they don't treat me like I'm stupid. They explain things, they source used parts, and they're fine with me coming back later to have other stuff worked on instead of spooking me out about it. Bonus is their waiting room, which is a mishmash of random antiques and furniture sourced from my childhood. I love VolTech! read more

I have taken my Volvo to several shops for various work, some big jobs, some not. One shop wanted $1400 for a job, another place did for $700. Another shop charged me for 18 quarts of tranny fluid on a flush, and I am not sure they even did the flush (no other mechanic I spoke with has ever heard of more than 14 qts used). So, there are some turds out there. Another owner recommended these cats and after a few minutes I knew I liked them enough to trust them with a whole new suspension on the front end and PCV replacement. They did a great job, for a great price, with a smile. Solid guys. Cool Hand Luke would aspire to be them. They know Volvos as well as anyone, maybe more. read more

I first took my '93 Volvo sedan to this shop after multiple expensive and frustrating attempts to fix a stall-out problem failed elsewhere. They correctly diagnosed and speedily and cheaply fixed the problem straight out of the gate. I also had a laundry list of non-urgent fixes to make (to my struts and rotors, among other things). I had estimates from other shops but VOL-Tech came under them all. It was still expensive, but they worked with me to divide the work to keep inside my budget and minimize the labor charges. They've since made all the fixes and I've been pleased all the way around. In addition to being skilled and affordable, they're great about follow-up. If they do a major repair, they will always call and check up to see if you're happy. That means a lot to me. As a side note, they rebuild and race Volvos as a sideline (go figure, I never thought of Volvos as racers) so they have plenty of passion and love for the car, which can only make them better at their work. It's also oddly comforting to see that classic long-haired salty mechanic dudes still have at least one safe haven left in an increasingly one-size-fits-all world. read more

Always friendly, they go over all the things that could be done but with no pressure. Extremely knowledgeable about Volvos. A free oil change has been thrown in once or twice. Just bought my first Volvo from a dealer. There was a red airbag light on and the dealer said that these guys could help me. The minute I pull into their lot, my radiator blows. These guys helped me seal up my radiator (with a screw) and reset the red airbag light for me. They also gave my car a once over and checked some areas of concern with the v70s. They didn't ask for payment and were super cool. I will definitley go back when I need some service work. read more

We just bought a 1998 V70 T5. It sounded really loud and seemed to stall at accelerating over 60mph. Within a couple of days, the service light and check engine lights came on and the car filled with gas fumes when I drove it. We took it into Vol-tech to have it checked out, hoping for the best. Sam was really awesome at dealing with both my husband and I, and working within our budget. After they replaced the engine mount and air meter, I left with a car that sound normal (!!!) and even acts like it actually has a turbo now! read more

I had a 1993 850 that was not shifting out of 2nd gear. These guys had me put $2200 worth of repairs into it, new spark plugs, new timing belt, new radiator, whole bunch of stuff. The car still had the problem, but intermittent. So I wanted them to buy the car back, since I couldn't really consider it reliable any more. Of course they wouldn't. The sign says "...and Subarus too!" But don't believe it. I'm not sure what's happened with the quality of work these guys do recently. I've been taking my car here since I moved to Portland 2 years ago and have steadily become more and more dis-satisfied with the job they do. Had an oil pan replaced a few months ago there and since then was having a very large and steady oil leak. I took it in again to have it looked at and they supposedly looked under my car and swore the leak was not coming from the oil pan seal, but instead from a different gasket that would put me back another $400-500 to fix. Something sounded too fishy with that explanation so I took it to another shop to get a second look. Sure enough, I had an obvious to diagnose and not to mention HUGE oil leak in the gasket of my oil pan. Couldn't trust the mechanics at VolTech to do it right so I just had the other shop fix it for me. No more leak. The reason VolTech gets 2 stars instead of 1 star is because Sam is a reasonable guy and was willing to reimburse the other shop to fix their mistake at no cost to me. They've got good customer service on the front end, but when it comes to doing what should be a simple fix right the 1st time, I just can't trust this shop anymore. read more

As a female who has little-to-no knowledge of cars, I tend to feel uncomfortable taking my Volvo in to have it serviced/repaired and feel that I'm usually getting ripped off. However, the guys at Voltech are incredibly straight forward and provide you with great service for a very reasonable price. I just took my 1990 Volvo 240 in for some work- There were lots of issues happening including water pump, radiator, warped cylinder head, fuel line leak, oil leak, bad ball joints, and on and on and on. Not only were these guys completely honest with me but they worked within my budget, helped me set up a plan to keep this wonderful car going another 100K miles plus! The work was all shown to me when I picked up the car, and they did a fantastic job. Not only does my car run and sound way better than it did before, but they came in at the estimate they quoted me, kept me informed of the work the whole time, and finished on time. Vol-tech, Inc. on Lombard and 7th just turned this tired, old, neglected Volvo S70 into a hot car, smooth as silk, purring like a sewing machine and a fun to drive sports car. They are race car drivers and I think that's probably the key... My 1970 Rover TC2000 drove like this after Bob Scoville used to do his thing to it and I thought I'd never love a car as much again. Maybe my car racing days aren't over. Must try a 3AM run up I-5. They rebuilt the front door mechanics, replaced the trunk hydraulics and the turn signal in addition to tune-up, oil change, fluids and fine tooth combing. Thanks Vol-tech and... WooHoo !!! read more
