Finally got to try Fixins Soul Kitchen! A friend had told me about the one in LA, so when I moved to Tulsa and saw they had a location here, I was excited to check it out. I stopped by with a friend for dinner, and the place is very nice and clean, with a friendly and welcoming staff. The food was good overall. I ordered the shrimp and grits and if I see that on a menu, I'm definitely trying it and it hit the spot. My friend got the catfish nuggets, and those were really good! Of course, I had to get my go-to drink, a French 75, and it did not disappoint. I didn't get a chance to try the Kool-Aid (my friend told me I should've!), so now I definitely have a reason to go back. Oh my goodness, normally I stick to Mom & Pop or hole in the wall style eateries for soul food. The food is typically better and the servers nicer. But restaurant has an upscale appearance AND warm, attentive servers who speak to and with you as neighborhood/community/family. And the food was on point! Outstanding! I absolutely never order fried chicken but I did today ater learning the fish on the menu was swai. To my surprise the fried chicken was really good, perfectly cooked and seasoned. The collards were just as good, tender, great mild seasoning with lots of flavor and nothing weird like sugar or vinegar. The mac & cheese was made with several cheeses, creamy, and baked perfectly. My corn bread muffin was a tad bit too sweet for me and very hard, although golden brown. The sweet butter that came with it didnt melt. Grits were stone ground but creamy due to the heavy cream they were cooked in. My kid said he enjoyed his mid-well burger although it looked like a pre-shaped frozen patty, but we both enjoyed his fries. I could swear the peaches in the cobbler a la mode were made with fresh peaches especially after I bit down on a piece of the pit! It was seasoned perfectly with a good balance of cinimmon and nutmeg but wayyyyyyyyy too much sugar. The sweet tea is also wayyyyyyyy to sweet. Someone else's server, Jasmine was very personable with her table and assisted us with the TV that was malfunctioning near our table. On the other hand our server, Ashley must've not have been feeling her best this evening. She just didn't match the ambience of the place or her colleagues' energy. I've been wanting to try this spot forever! And finally had dinner before a concert downtown. It was dead on a Tuesday night, and our server was so nice. It's a really cool vibe inside. I had a vodka kool aid, and it's exactly as sweet as momma makes it in the holler. Fried green tomatoes were crispy and delicious. Both biscuits & cornbread are delicious with specialty butters! Well, I finally made it to Fixins to review their talked about fried chicken. And it did not disappoint. First off, the atmosphere is really nice. It's an upscale restaurant with a nice menu. Sorry, I can't tell you what else was offered on the menu cuz I only came in for 1 thing; Fried Chicken. The Fried Chicken came out hot and smelling great. It was crispy and juicy. I couldn't tell if they had brined it but regardless, it was juicy. The flavor was really Extra. I like my chicken simple without a lot of seasonings but they definitely had added some stuff in there. But that's ok, I ate every crumb and cleaned them bones like I was homeless. My only issue was that either they cooked my chicken a little long or the grease was too hot cuz the crust was a little dark. But still juicy so still good. Imma give it another try yo see if it was just one of their chefs was not paying attention or this was how they do it. The collard greens were good. Again, a bit over seasoned for me but I ate every bite. So what's up with no masked potatoes and gravy?? Fr? That was a shock for me. But I know all that takes time. My order came out within 10 minutes. When it arrived to my table there was no steam from the oxtails or my collard greens. Hannah, my sweet waitress, warmed the food for me. I love this place. The S/O and I come here a lot. We're vegan and we love the vegan menu. When we bring our friends and family here (meaty people) they like this place as well. That said, lately the vegan items have been VERY hit or miss. The sides are always en pointe but the mains have been less so. The blackened tofu has come out SO SALTY several times that it is almost inedible. The other things that come with it aren't salty so it has to be in the preparation of the tofu. How? How can that much salt get added and no one notices during the preparation? The vegan burger comes out in all kinds of ways. Despite the menu listing what comes on the burger, it comes out with missing veggies, sauce, etc. The staff are always very nice when we point this out and they take it back and make it right but this has been happening SO OFTEN we've stopped ordering anything to go. With no assurance that the items ordered will arrive as described on the menu, why would anyone? And that the vegan items have been so reliably unreliable is a big deterrent from ordering to go. Which sucks! I loved suggesting this for large groups since they offer vegan and meaty options. As the only soul food joint in Tulsa with vegan options this is especially disappointing. My group had a dinner there last night. They had the event space set up perfectly. I was nervous because there was only one waitress for our big group and one bartender. But Key and Aramis (?sp) did an AMAZING job! They were so friendly, and helpful. I do think they could've had more staff for our big group of 30, but Key and Aramis made it work! Wow. Kevin Johnson please expand to Kansas City because we NEED a restaurant like this ASAP! First of the all the service was impeccable! Our server was attentive, knowledgeable and super sweet. We didn't catch her name but she had beautiful blonde curls bright smile! Everything came out to order and we had more than a few special requests. The star of the show was the oxtails! I had to include a picture of the bones because the meat came clean off with it being so hot and tender. The meat melts in your mouth and there was barely any fat, which is surprising for oxtails. Those cow not only roam free, but they must be getting massages and graze on the best grass because my husband cleaned his plate; which is extremely rare for meals outside the house. When I say if you come here and don't order these, you are making a huge mistake! Absolutely incredible and I will literally make a trip to Tulsa just to eat this. The Mac n cheese wasn't the greatest, but it wasn't bad. I love how the collard greens were made with turkey neck instead of pork like most restaurants. The lavender lemon drip was a lot better than I expected and a very pretty presentation! I didn't order the deviled eggs, but those were right up my husband's alley and he loved every bite. The cornbread muffins are HUMONGOUS and very light. Almost like a cake texture, but still moist because it was falling apart with every bite. The chicken just like the oxtail needs their own paragraph. First of all how many restaurants nowadays brine their chicken for 24 hours?! I won't hold my breath while you search for the answer lol but seriously WOW! You can tell from the flavor and how moist it is that none of this food is "fast". This food tastes like a plate you got in the 90s after church on Sunday. We have brought a lot of family/friends into town, and one of the places that we bring them is Fixins. The food is a 5 of 5, especially considering the quality relative to the price. The environment is kind of just generic new American with TVs, so I would probably give that a 4 just saying that it's fine, but not special. I would like to give this restaurant a five. I think that the food relative to the value is a five. We have had a couple of servers at the restaurant who were very attentive to some patrons and ignored us/ provided very little (zero) service. Tulsa is a strange case: we have had a lot in of history with racial tension. Usually, we have integrated and dealt with it pretty well. When I dine at Fixin's, I love the food, but I super don't feel welcome there. It makes me sad. I feel like the food is 5/5. read more

Fixin's is a soul food restaurant that was founded in Sacramento by former NBA player and Mayor, Kevin Johnson. The location in Tulsa, OK had a different meaning and feeling for me as it is located in Tulsa's Historic Black Wall Street! It was a fantastic experience to eat here solo. My server was attentive but not overbearing so I was able to enjoy my solo dinner! My dinner was delicious! I went with the oxtails, mac and cheese, and yams and everything was GREAT! We stopped by Fixins Soul Kitchen over the 4th of July weekend, and let me tell you--it was SO worth it! I came with my family, and we left full, happy, and already planning our return. I ordered the catfish with fritters, collard greens, mac and cheese, and added an à la carte chicken wing because I wanted to taste everything. Nothing disappointed. The catfish was perfectly seasoned, the collards were rich and savory, and the mac and cheese was creamy comfort in a bowl. And yes--I had the famous Kool-Aid, and it absolutely hit the spot. One of the most surprising highlights was the sorghum butter served on the side. It was light with a hint of berry, almost dessert-like in its subtle sweetness. I appreciate the modern decor with unique touches like the nostalgic artwork. Although this place stays consistently busy, when we came on a busy Saturday afternoon for lunch, our group of four didn't have to wait too long before being seated. Street parking is free on weekends with a row of parking spaces right outside of the restaurant. The food was great. The fried chicken was perfectly cooked - well seasoned and crispy on the outside. The sides were all very good as well. We tried the red beans and rice and collard greens, both were tasty. We also tried the chicken and waffles which was delicious. It is served with a side of sweet compound butter - so good! Everything on the menu looked yummy. I can't wait to come back and try the gumbo, oxtail, and smothered pork chops. Service was great. Our server was super friendly, attentive, and efficient. The owner was there at the time and came over to greet us which was fun. I sometimes go to Tulsa for work. I'm never very excited to go but this restaurant has changed that. When I first walked in, I was scared that the food wasn't going to be good because of how nice and modern the decor is here. The bar and the really cool wallpaper lead me to believe that this place was going to be more trendy than delicious but I was wrong! Everything tastes like it's made fresh and from scratch. I arrived during happy hour and didn't feel much like drinking but I definitely took advantage of their discounted appetizer and went with the Mac N Cheese Balls. I chose this as I was having trouble deciding on the side dishes for my meal and this allowed me to eliminate Mac N Cheese from the list. For my meal, I went with the Smothered Chicken. Perfectly fried and smothered in the most delicious roux gravy. For my two sides, I went with the Chard Okra w bacon and the Red Beans and rice. The former has leas me to believe that okra is meant to be chard and the latter was a perfect combo that was not as heavy as I expected. I stumbled on this restaurant as I was looking for eating places located within walking distance of the hotel in downtown Tulsa. When I entered the building I was surprised at the energy and excitement and obvious enthusiasm that could be felt. I hadn't made it to my seat but I felt this was going to be good. Once seated I was greeted by my waitress Mirriakle. She was absolutely fabulous one of the best that has waited on me. She was friendly, efficient, informative, and had a servant mentality that is normally not found. There were no questions left unanswered. As I waited on for my food I noticed the flow of the entire staff as they waited on various tables without question there is a culture that was established and continues from head to toe. My food arrived in record time and I was not disappointed. Fried chicken was cooked to perfection along with Mac n cheese that was fit for a king! I topped it off with potato salad and corn bread. There was nothing left after that meal but banana pudding! Mirriakle provided me additional information that the owner is former NBA great Kevin Johnson who just happened to be in the restaurant. He took time out to greet me and thanked me for coming out to support his restaurant. I was absolutely floored as he was one of my favorites growing up and to see that he built such a fine restaurant was a huge bonus. This restaurant immediately goes as one of the top five restaurants in my book. If you are ever in downtown Tulsa don't forget to stop by this fantastic restaurant as you will not be disappointed.
