I went in to Flatbush Bagels today and saw one the of the employees behind the counter who was preparing orders with his mask under his chin, mouth and nose fully exposed. Every customer but one was wearing a mask, and that single customer was not asked to put on a mask. I get that it's hard to wear a mask all day, but employees should be given more breaks, not given leeway to expose the food they're serving to people. And absolutely no one should be admitted to any indoor business without a mask! COME ON! We are STILL IN A PANDEMIC. It's too damn expensive. There is no way to get away cheap here even just a bagel with cream cheese is $5. The bagel by itself costs $1.50 or $2.00 so how does that work? But unfortunately they are the only good bagels in the neighborhood so I keep paying $30 for a BEC and one with lox. Which brings me to my point - the bagels are good, the food is good, the service is good. But lately it feels like a game of "How Small Can We Make This $8 BEC?" When I'm paying $4 for a bagel with cream cheese or $8 for a bacon egg and cheese there shouldn't be a shortage of cream cheese or bacon on only half my sandwich. I am officially done with Flatbush Bagel. 1. No system for ordering. Basically a free for all and depends on if the guy behind the counter remembers your face or not. Had to wait for a bacon egg and cheese for 15 minutes but a guy that ordered after me got his (same order) in 5 minutes. 2. Bagels are okay....everything bagel had a "pinch" of everything, could basically be a plain bagel. 3. My order is ALWAYS (without fail) wrong, no matter how slow it is. 4. For the second time at Flatbush Bagels, I was charged a higher price at the register than was listed on the board. When I pointed it out, they first claimed it was because of sales tax, then admitted that it was a mistake but refused to honor the lower price. Will I go to the poorhouse because I paid $2.95 for a bagel with butter, and not $2.75? Of course not. But it's aggravating to have a place take advantage of their customers. I literally never leave reviews (this is my first), but this place is absolutely fire--I really don't understand how it is only 3 stars. Crazy fast service that rivals the best NYC bodegas, good quality bagels made throughout the day, and one of the kindest people you'll ever meet who runs/manages the place (and is there almost every day). And the other employees there are super nice and patient as well. I honestly don't know what more you could want in a bagel spot. This place is amazing. The service has been excellent. We found this on the map and being on vacation we wanted bagels. These did not disappoint! Bagel and lox was excellent especially with the veggie lox cream cheese. Bagel egg and bacon sandwich loaded and delicious. Tried the house made banana nut muffin delicious. Placed order in person with no other customers in the place and no one filled it. After paying and standing at the counter the worker who took my payment asked "am I taking your order?" Told him someone else took my order and another guy asked "I took your order?" I'm the customer and not responsible for keeping track of who took my order. I have been coming to this place since it was named Bergen's Bagels and have been going to Bergen's Bagels since before it was in this neighborhood and I went to the one on Bergen Street. Like so many other customers, today will be my last day patronizing Flatbush Bagels. During a pandemic we all need to show each other grace. I have always been incredibly respectful as I worked in food service for years, and I have the utmost respect for anyone working in food service. In fact, I was excited to have cash on me today so I could leave an extra holiday tip (needless to say, I didn't). While I was in there today, the guy behind the counter was rude and dismissive. I told him twice that I wanted two egg sandwiches with cream cheese. Each time I tried to explain my order, he couldn't hear me. It doesn't help when the store is blaring music and I'm trying to place an order through a mask. Not to mention that I'm short so sound is not going to carry over the plastic display. I told him I couldn't hear him because of the music, so he turned it a bit down. Then, I requested that I write down the order after I tried telling it to him again and we still couldn't hear each other. He dismissed me. "No, it's simple." So, I stated my order again. He wouldn't allow me to confirm that he got the right order because after being curt and dismissive, he walked away. When he told the cashier what to ring me up for, I assumed that he got it right. Now that I'm home, turns out I paid for something I didn't receive, and I was overcharged. He got the order wrong. Classic. It's not even the money. It's the lack of grace in customer service, lack of courtesy towards customers, and it's the arrogance. I was ecstatic when Bergen's opened in the neighborhood. Then it turned to Flatbush Bagels, and now, because they can't treat their customers well, I'm done with them. If I want a bagel, I'll head to Bergen's on Bergen Street. read more

Don't believe all the negative reviews. It's a super busy shop, there's always a line, and basically the same three dudes work from open to close. Yes, they're in a hurry. Yes, it's a bit pricey. I order from them in a pinch but generally I'm pretty disappointed in their inconsistency and mediocre customer service. Just to be clear this was true even before the pandemic. They seem to either be rushing, risking messing up orders, or they're moving super slow and it takes forever. The bagels are delicious when your order is correct and they've just come out fresh. But I often get a day old bagel with a hard outer crust. The cream cheese is either caked on in huge globs or a whole side of your sandwich is missing it.
